Gordon Sets Rush Record, Wisconsin Routs Nebraska

nebraska_helmetMADISON, Wis. (AP) — Melvin Gordon rushed for a major college-record 408 yards and four touchdowns and No. 22 Wisconsin overcame three early turnovers to take control of the Big Ten West division with a 59-24 win Saturday over No. 11 Nebraska.

Gordon eclipsed the single-game mark held since 1999 by TCU’s LaDainian Tomlinson by two yards, setting the new standard on a 26-yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter and his last carry of the game.

Outdueling Nebraska’s Ameer Abdullah in a matchup of star running backs, Gordon overcame two fumbles to help the Badgers (8-2, 5-1, CFP No. 20) roar past the Cornhuskers (8-2, 4-2, CFP No. 16) with 49 unanswered points.

The star junior torched what had been a staunch Nebraska defense on 25 carries and delivered an emphatic statement in the Heisman Trophy race.

Abdullah finished with 69 yards on 18 attempts.

Fronk’s Hat Trick Leads Riders Over Storm

Forward Chris Wilkie scored his ninth goal of the season for the Storm in the loss, while forward Matthew Freytag picked up his fourth tally with a power play goal.

Cedar Rapids was led by a tandem of wings in Jiri Fronk and Erik Foley, who combined for five of the RoughRiders seven goals. Fronk scored once in the second and twice in the third to complete a hat trick on the night, while Foley had a goal in each of the first two periods.

But Cedar Rapids responded with two more tallies from Fronk and Foley to take a 5-1 lead, forcing the Storm to pull goaltender Alec Dillon in favor of backup Blake Weyrick.

Freytag’s goal came in the final seconds of Tri-City’s first power play of the evening on a deflection of a slapshot from defenseman Mattias Goransson. Tory Dello picked up the second assist on the goal.

Fronk scored twice in less than a two minute span for the RoughRiders in the third to open things up and despite 17 shots for Tri-City in the final period, the game ended with Cedar Rapids on top 7-2.

NCAA Selects Men’s Final Four Sites for 2017-21

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA men’s basketball championship is going West in 2017.

Phoenix is one of five future Final Four sties chosen Friday by the men’s basketball committee. The others are San Antonio in 2018, Minneapolis in 2019 and Atlanta in 2020. Indianapolis, where the NCAA is based, will host the 2021 Final Four even though the committee was only expected to award games through 2020.

Three other cities, including St. Louis, also made bids.

The NCAA last played a Final Four in the Pacific time zone in 1995 when Seattle was the host site. San Antonio has hosted the Final Four three times since 1998. Minneapolis and Atlanta will be playing in new venues. Indy is hosting the Final Four this year, the seventh time the city has hosted the event.

Broncos O-Line Continues to be a Concern

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The scuffling and shuffling along Denver’s offensive line may not be over.

Offensive coordinator Adam Gase said he’ll stick with the same five starters from his retooled line when the Broncos (7-2) visit St. Louis (3-6) on Sunday.

That lineup isn’t written in indelible ink, however.

Left to right, that line is: Ryan Clady, Orlando Franklin, Will Montgomery, Manny Ramirez and Louis Vasquez

Ramirez and Vasquez are playing out of position after sliding one spot over last week at Oakland to make room for Montgomery at center. Clady (groin) and Franklin (knee) are ailing but will play Sunday.

Silver: Bring Sports Gambling Into the Sunlight

NBA-BasketballNEW YORK (AP) — NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says it’s time for a new approach to betting on sports.

In an op-ed article for The New York Times published online on Thursday, Silver says fans should have a safe and legal way to gamble on professional games. He suggests a federal framework that allows states to legalize sports betting. He says new regulations would help prevent underage betting while educating those with a gambling problem about how to bet responsibly.

Sports leagues have long opposed gambling on games, claiming it creates incentives for game-fixing. It is currently only legal in Nevada; New Jersey is moving toward legalization — against the opposition of all four major pro sports leagues.

Silver says new laws would have to protect the integrity of the sports.
