NPCC volleyball opens season hosting No. 15 Northeast

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team will open their regular season at home on Wednesday night, August 23, against the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks at 7:00 PM.

The National Junior College Athletic Association Division II preseason # 15 ranked Lady Hawks, coached by Amanda Schultze, have four sophomores, and seven freshmen finished the 2016 season with a 27-13 record, and are the defending District D champions.

The Lady Knights finished the 2016 season at 14-25.  The Lady Knights, coached by Alexa McCall, have five returning sophomores: Mikenna Curlee from Peetz, Colo.; Antonya Schaffert from Otis, Colo.; Madi Gilg from Gothenburg; Cheyanne Kuhlmann from Imperial; and Aly Camacho from Scottsbluff. Joining the returning sophomores are freshmen Taylin McNair from Imperial, Carly Moss fromWindsor, Colo. ; Shaylee Johnson from Fleming, Colo; Carlie Wytulka from Nucla, Colo; Luisa Hernandez from Yuma, Colo.; Jordynn Simpson from North Platte; Jade Max from Ogallala, Neci Sundquist from Dayton, Wyo.; and Amanda Kroeger from Ogallala.

McCall said, “We are excited for the girls to officially take the court.  They have had a good two weeks of preseason and are ready to play Northeast.”

The match will be broadcast on ESPN 1410 radio and www.northplattepost.com.  It will also be livestreamed at www.npccknights.com.

Commission to consider bighorn sheep season at meeting in North Platte

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider a staff recommendation to authorize one auction and one lottery permit for the 2018 bighorn sheep season when it meets Aug. 17 in North Platte.

The meeting will begin at 8 a.m. at the West Central Research and Extension Center, 402 W. State Farm Road.

Also on the agenda are staff recommendations to:

— amend fisheries aquaculture regulations regarding the application for importation of aquatic organisms and requirements related to the discovery of pathogens;

— approve an increase in the cash change fund at the Rock Creek State Fish Hatchery and to establish a cash change fund at the Valentine State Fish Hatchery;

— approve a permanent easement request from the Loup River Public Power District to bury an overhead power line on Wilkinson Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Platte County;

— approve a land trade in Sioux County with the state’s Board of Educational Lands and Funds for 15 acres adjacent to Gilbert-Baker WMA in exchange for a 27-acre tract;

— approve acquisition of 747.81 acres in Banner County adjacent to William’s Gap WMA;

— approve hunting seasons in specific state parks and state historical parks; and

— approve a resolution supporting the recommendation of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Sustaining America’s Diverse Fish and Wildlife Resources and the Alliance for America’s Fish and Wildlife Campaign.

The Commission also will hear public testimony regarding the Lake McConaughy/Lake Ogallala Master Plan. It will hear a staff update on the Berggren Plan for Pheasants/Open Fields and Waters Program.

In addition, staff will give presentations on the Conservation Environmental Review Tool and the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project’s Loess Canyon Biologically Unique Landscape.

NPCC Lady Knights basketball signs Georgia PG Jamesia Holliman

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team has announced the signing of Jamesia Holliman to the 2017-18 basketball team.

Holliman, a 5’ 4” point guard, is from Macon, Ga., played for Westside High School In two years of varsity action, Holliman averaged 7.2 points per games, had 3.4 rebounds per game, 2.6 rebounds per game and 2.3 steals per game.

For her AAU team, she was coached by Ervin Josey. She made the all-star team for three seasons, averaging 10 points a game and six assists per game.

“I am very happy to have Jamesia on board with us next year. Her ability to see the floor and get the ball to the open person will be a great attribute to the type of ball we’re going to play next year.” Lady Knight Interim Head Coach Ashley Bell said, “She works hard, tries to give you everything she has for forty minutes, plays aggressive and is a go –getter. I can’t wait to see her start next year and see her improvement

Holliman is the sixth recruit to sign with the Lady Knights basketball team for the 2017-18 season. The others are Naria Hall of Wichita, Kan., Hannah Johnson of Hershey, Nahatabaa Nacona from Chinle, Ariz., Tiara Hartfield, from Houston, Texas; and Jasmine Satterwhite, from Austin Texas.

NPCC Lady Knights volleyball team named NJCAA top academic team

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team coached by Alexa McCall, was named by the National Junior College Athletic Association as the Academic Team of the Year for volleyball during the 2016 – 17 school year.

The Lady Knights finished the school year with a 3.86 cumulative grade point average as a team.

The only team in the NJCAA in all sports to finish with a higher GPA was the Daytona State College women’s golf team, with a 3.89 GPA.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this set of girls and the hard work that they put in, “ McCall said. “They started the year with high expectations, which made this possible.”

Earlier this month, 10 Lady Knight volleyball players received Academic Student-Athlete Awards by the NJCAA.

“The hours spent in the gym, on top of keeping on their school work, shows their dedication and mostly what great kids they are,” McCall said. “They pushed each other and made their goal of a 3.8 team GPA and this is just icing on the cake.”

AUDIO: Nebraska Greats Foundation to host golf tournament at River’s Edge on Friday

The Nebraska Greats Foundation will host the 2017 North Platte Golf Classic on Friday, July 14th at River’s Edge Golf Club.

This is your chance to golf with former Nebraska athletes and support the mission of the Nebraska Greats Foundation in providing financial assistance to former Nebraska collegiate athletes who, as a result of a medical challenge, have exhausted both their insurance and personal resources.

The goal of the event is to build awareness of the Foundation in Western Nebraska and statewide plus raise money for the Foundation.

In attendance will be Nebraska’s Heismann Trophy Winners Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier and Eric Crouch along other former Huskers such as Tony Davis, Jerry Murtaugh, Bob Churchich, Jeff Kinney and others.

NPCC Lady Knights basketball adds two players to 2017 class

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team has announced the signing of two players to the 2017-18 team.
Naria Hall of Wicita, Kan., and Hannah Johnson of Hershey, Neb., will join the Lady Knights this fall.

Hall, who played her high school basketball at Wichita South High School, played last season at Colby Community College. At Colby, Hall averaged 5.2 points per game, two rebounds per game, 23 assists, and 28 steals in 29 games.

Hannah Johnson of Hershey, Neb.

Johnson, graduated from Hershey in 2016. Johnson averaged 7.8 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.8 assists per game, and 1.3 steals per game.

These two will join Nahatabaa Nacona from Chinle, Ariz., Tiara Hartfield, from Houston, Texas; and Jasmine Satterwhite, from Austin Texas on the Lady Knights basketball team for the 2017-18 season.
