Pawloski Shuts Door On Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Despite recording 57 shots on net through three periods and overtime, the Tri-City Storm (4-2-1) came up short to the Green Bay Gamblers (3-3-0), losing 4-3 in a six-round shootout at the Viaero Event Center Saturday afternoon.

Forward Nick Master scored a power play goal for Tri-City, while defenseman Bobby Nardella and forward Jake Wahlin each picked up their first goals of the season in the loss.

Green Bay goaltender Jason Pawloski was outstanding in the contest, making 54 saves and stopping five of six shooters from Tri-City in the shootout.

The Storm took the lead in the first period on Master’s second goal of the season. The UMass-Lowell commit found a rebound in front and made it 1-0 early on. The goal was the eighth power play strike for Tri-City on the season, who started the day with the top power play conversion percentage in the league.

It was a lopsided opening period, with the Storm earning four power play opportunities and outshooting Green Bay 20-6. But Pawloski kept the Gamblers in the game, shutting down some great Tri-City chances.

In the middle frame, Green Bay scored twice to take a 2-1 lead. Forwards Christopher Brown and Ryan Smith had the goals for the Gamblers, and gave the team their first lead of the weekend.

Defenseman Vili Saarijarvi scored at 7:57 of the third for Green Bay, pushing the lead to 3-1.

But the Storm turned things around and got back in the game with goals from Nardella and Wahlin. 59 seconds after Saarijarvi made it 3-1, Nardella responded, scoring on a pass from forward Chris Wilkie to cut the Green Bay lead to 3-2.

Less than five minutes later, Wahlin found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3. Defensemen Tory Dello and Jalen Schulz recorded assists on the tying tally and the teams were all knotted up.

Just like they did in the first period, Tri-City recorded 20 shots on net in the third, while Green Bay had just three. But neither team could find a winning tally, and the game went to overtime.

After a scoreless OT, defenseman Anthony Walsh and forward Mitch Snyder beat Storm netminder Alec Dillon in the shootout to get the win for the Gamblers.

The lone shootout goal for Tri-City was scored by Cody Milan.

Dillon made 20 saves for the Storm in defeat, continuing his impressive start in the USHL.

Tri-City will head on the road to face Team USA in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Friday and Saturday next weekend. Both games will start at 6:00 p.m. CST.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Aleksi Ainali, Nolan Aibel and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Cameron Spicer and goaltender Blake Weyrick…

Huskers Come Up Short Against Illinois

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – The No. 13 Nebraska volleyball team (11-6, 5-3 Big Ten) fell to No. 15 Illinois (14-5, 6-2 Big Ten) at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday afternoon, 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-27, 21-25).

Alicia Ostrander had a career-high 19 kills to lead the Huskers. Kadie Rolfzen had 12 kills, and Amber Rolfzen had 11 kills and 13 digs. Cecilia Hall had six kills and eight blocks, while Meghan Haggerty had six kills and five blocks. Mary Pollmiller added six kills with her 44 set assists. Justine Wong-Orantes had 22 digs.

Illinois’ Morganne Criswell had a season-high 21 kills, while Jocelynn Birks, the Big Ten leader in kills per set in conference play, had 19. Alexis Viliunas had 56 assists.

Illinois narrowly outhit Nebraska .228 to .224. Both teams had 14 blocks and 68 digs.

Illinois took set one, 25-23, coming back from a 20-18 deficit to take a 21-20 lead after a Birks kill. The Huskers tied it up at 22-22 on a kill by Hall, but a Katie Stadick kill and block with Viliunas gave Illinois a 24-22 lead, forcing a Husker timeout. After Illinois let Nebraska within one via a service error, Criswell finished off the set with a shot to the back row.

The Huskers led 7-4 in set two but let Illinois go on a 4-0 run to gain an 8-7 lead. With the set tied 16-16, Illinois committed a service error and Ostrander killed to make it 18-16 and force an Illinois timeout. Nebraska never allowed Illinois to draw even again in the set. The Huskers separated from a 19-18 lead with a 4-0 run with two kills by Kadie Rolfzen and a block by Hall and Amber Rolfzen to make it 23-18. Illinois fought off three set points, but the Huskers finally ended it at 25-21 on a kill from Hall right down the middle.

Set three was back-and-forth the whole way. The Illini claimed a three-point lead at 18-15, but the Huskers clawed back with a dump by Pollmiller, a kill by Ostrander and then an Ostrander/Hall block to even it at 18-18. Illinois got back-to-back kills by Criswell to go up 23-21, and another Criswell kill gave the Illini set point at 24-22. Nebraska came back to tie it on kills by Haggerty and Kadie Rolfzen. With the set tied at 25-25, Liz McMahon won a long rally for Illinois, and the Huskers misfired to give Illinios the edge in the match with a 27-25 victory.

Set four began with a 4-0 Illinois run, and the Illini extended the lead to 10-4, forcing the Huskers to use their second and final timeout of the set. Criswell had two blocks and a kill during a 3-0 spurt to put the Illini up 10-4. Trailing 17-11, the Huskers put together a furious rally to pull within 19-17 and force an Illini timeout. Haggerty had a kill and two blocks along the way. But the Huskers could get no closer, as Illinois pulled away to the 25-21 win.

Nebraska is on the road for the next four matches, beginning at Minnesota on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. That match will be on BTN.

Royals Fans, City have Evolved a Lot Since 1985

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A popular refrain for Kansas City baseball fans as their team blazes through the playoffs is that they’re ready to party like it’s 1985, when the Royals beat St. Louis for their first World Series title.

But with a farm crisis raging, interest rates skyrocketing and the economy in shambles 29 years ago, would they really want to?

The NBA’s Kansas City Kings moved to California that year and Union Station closed its doors after decades of neglect. With its empty storefronts, downtown was decades away from its revival as an entertainment mecca, and Kemper Arena was still city’s premier indoor sports venue.

Former Royals second baseman Frank White says a lot more than the old AstroTurf has changed since the team’s glory days, much of it for the better.

Dillon Colors Out Green Bay In 4-0 Win

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm (4-2-0) goaltender Alec Dillon made it two Friday night shutouts in a row, defeating the Green Bay Gamblers (2-3-0) 4-0 on Color Out Cancer Night at the Viaero Event Center Friday.

On an ice surface painted by fans, Dillon stopped all 25 shots that came his way to record his second shutout of the season. Tri-City got goals from four different players, including three power play tallies.

Garrett Gamez scored in the first period before Cody Milan, Chris Wilkie and Mason Appleton each netted power play goals in the second.

Gamez opened the scoring with his third goal of the year at 7:58 of the first period and the Storm went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.

Things were broken open in the second when Tri-City scored power play goals just a minute and four seconds apart from each other. First, Milan found a rebound in front and put it home for his first goal of the season. After another Green Bay penalty to Jake Kauppila for roughing, Jake Wahlin placed a pass right on Wilkie’s stick for the goal and a 3-0 lead. Wilkie now has four goals in the team’s first six games to lead the team.

Later in the middle period, Storm defenseman Bobby Nardella found Appleton in front for the team’s third power play goal of the period to make it 4-0. Appleton now has three goals in his first six USHL games.

Gamblers’ netminder Jared Rutledge made 30 stops for Green Bay in the loss. Tri-City outshot Green Bay 34-25 in the game.

The two teams will finish off their weekend series with an afternoon 3:05 p.m. start time on Saturday at the Viaero Event Center.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Aleksi Ainali, Nolan Aibel and Wade Allison, along with defenseman Jason Krych and goaltender Blake Weyrick…

Ned Yost has Underdog Royals back in World Series

Ned Yost
Ned Yost

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jeff Foxworthy figures he can wait just a while longer to go hunting with his neighbor and good buddy. After all, Ned Yost is a bit busy this time of the year.

He has the Kansas City Royals back in the World Series for the first time since 1985.

Yost has become one of the central figures of the baseball playoffs, with his often-questionable moves and steadfast belief in his team. And here’s the thing: That debatable decision-making has proven to be faultless during a perfect run to the Fall Classic.

Now, a fan base that coined the term “yosted” for any kind of screw-up is lavishing Yost with the kind of praise reserved for hometown heroes such as George Brett and Frank White.

Public Access Atlas Updates Available Online

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds hunters that updates to the Public Access Atlas are available online. It also recommends hunters check for updates before heading out to hunt on properties.

The atlas is an annual publication that includes information on land enrolled in the Open Fields and Waters (OFW) program, which allows private land to be open to hunters and anglers for walk-in access. It also provides information on public state and federal lands open to hunting and fishing. Printed atlases are available where hunting and fishing permits are sold.

Several updates have been made to the maps since the 2014 atlas was printed in September. These updates include additional sites enrolled in the OFW Small Grain Wheat Stubble Management Program and a small number of acres that are no longer part of the OFW program.

Visit OutdoorNebraska.org and search “Public Access Atlas” to view the most up-to-date printable map sheets, Public Access Atlas booklet, Google Earth files, and mobile app instructions.

The league announced the deal Friday in Beijing. The league says the initiative will provide enhanced basketball training to 3 million students by 2017.

Commissioner Adam Silver says the partnership will help “our long-standing commitment with the Chinese Basketball Association to grow the game in China.”

The program will bring NBA players, former stars and coaches to Chinese schools for clinics and specialized instruction for Chinese physical education teachers and coaches.

The NBA will also help the Ministry of Education in operating the country’s youth basketball leagues.
