Finney, Arias Lead Idaho St Past Chadron St 39-34

chadron stPOCATELLO, Idaho (AP) — Xavier Finney ran for a career-high 158 yards and two touchdowns and Idaho State held off Chadron State for a 39-34 win Saturday.

Justin Arias threw for 318 yards and a career-high tying four touchdowns for Idaho State (1-2).

Idaho State scored touchdowns on six out of seven possessions and opened up a 39-13 lead with 4:38 left in the third quarter.

On Idaho State’s next drive, a 27-yard field goal attempt was blocked and returned 80-yards for a touchdown by Jordan Jones, pulling Chadron State within 19 and sparking a rally.

Chadron State scored on a 39-yard touchdown run by Michael Madkins and — following a fumble that was forced and recovered by Ryan Wood — a 25-yard touchdown pass from John McLain to Danny O’Boyle to make it 39-34 with 1:22 remaining.

An onside kick by Randy Wentz went out of bounds before Idaho State bled the clock.

Welker, Scandrick Remain on Suspended List

Wes Welker

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker won’t be suiting up on Sunday.

Neither will Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

Despite the union’s approval, the NFL didn’t sign off on a new drug policy before Saturday’s roster deadline, meaning players potentially eligible for reinstatement remained on the reserve/suspended list.

That includes Welker and Scandrick, who are both serving four-game punishments.

The NFL Players Association approved a new policy Friday that would introduce HGH testing and significantly increase the threshold for positive marijuana tests. Other changes could result in suspended players seeing their punishments reduced or rescinded.

Despite the union’s OK, the NFL didn’t approve the new policy by the 4 p.m. ET deadline for the 53-man rosters to be set for Sunday’s games.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told The Associated Press on Friday night that significant issues remained unresolved.

US, Serbia to Meet for Basketball World Cup Gold

USA-BasketballMADRID (AP) — After a difficult summer, the Basketball World Cup has been pretty easy for the U.S.

No games have been close in the final minutes, and only one was even competitive entering the final period. This depleted team that was supposed to be vulnerable has instead been invincible.

The Americans believe that tough game is coming Sunday — and so does Serbia, their opponent.

“They have supreme confidence and just that expectation, I think, that they feel like they’re going to win,” U.S. guard Stephen Curry said, “and we have that same mentality as well.”

Serbia is the only team left that can stop the Americans from repeating as world champions, looking to regain a title that’s meant so much in its basketball history.

“They are great, good team, but for sure we won’t go inside the game to lose,” Serbian guard Milos Teodosic said.

The Americans were supposed to be here, though the road to the final was expected to be tougher once Kevin Durant, Kevin Love and Blake Griffin withdrew, and Paul George broke his right leg. But the opponent is a surprise.

The Serbians barely qualified for the 24-team field as the seventh-place finisher in last year’s European championship. They were only 2-3 in the group stage, advancing as the fourth and final team from the powerful Group A, but have peaked since the games became win or go home.

A 90-72 rout of previously unbeaten Greece in the round of 16 was followed by an 84-56 victory over Brazil in the quarterfinals. Then the Serbians built a huge lead and held on Friday for a 90-85 victory over France, which had beat then in the group stage and knocked out tournament co-favorite Spain in the quarters.

“They’re just playing great basketball right now and actually it’s beautiful to see. I hope I don’t see that beauty tomorrow night,” U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “But they’ve been playing lights-out basketball.”

The Americans have been more dominant, averaging 101.5 points and winning by 32.5 per game. Their last two games had single-digit margins at halftime, and yet they ended up winning both by a combined 71 points.

“I cannot say we’re going to win against the U.S, but I’m sure we’re going to give all our best and try to fight, but it’s going to be hard for sure,” said former NBA center Nenad Krstic.

The Americans have never repeated as world champions. The last team to win titles consecutively was Yugoslavia in 1998 and 2002.

Krstic remembers cheering for his country mates during the latter game, held in the United States, at a gas station with his club team that was on a bus at the time. It was the last of a record five world titles won by Yugoslavia when Serbia competed as part of that nation.

The Serbians have retained that basketball passion since competing under their own flag — Curry played on the U.S. team that lost to host Serbia in the championship game of the 2007 under-19 tournament.

“It’s tough winning silver that game, so hopefully we can be on the other side of it this time around,” Curry said.

Serbia is already guaranteed its first medal at the senior level. The Serbians — whose Olympic committee president is former NBA center Vlade Divac — finished fourth in 2010.

“It means a lot because we are a basketball country,” Krstic said. “Lots of people, whole country watch this game.”

The Americans say it’s just as important to them, especially after all the adversity they faced before the games began. USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo has said a gold medal would be the sweetest one since he took over the program in 2005, since it seemed so in doubt as big name after big name passed on the trip to Spain.

“It’s everything for us,” U.S. forward James Harden said. “We came here with one thing on our mind, that’s to win the gold medal. We came this far, doing an excellent job this far in this tournament. So one more game to complete our mission.”

Royals Fall Out of 1st with 4-2 Loss to Red Sox

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Allen Webster pitched six solid innings and Jemile Weeks stroked a pair of doubles and scored two runs as the Boston Red Sox defeated the sputtering Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Friday night.

Kansas City lost for the fourth time in five games and fell out of first place in the AL Central for the first time since Aug. 10. The Royals, who are 0-5 against the last-place Red Sox, dropped a half-game behind Detroit, which beat Cleveland 7-2.

Webster (4-3), who had allowed 15 runs on 16 hits and seven walks in 13 2-3 innings in his previous three starts, limited the Royals to four hits — including Eric Hosmer’s two-run homer in the fourth.

Weeks, who had a two-run double in the ninth inning Thursday, doubled in the third and fifth. Mookie Betts singled home Weeks in a three-run third. He scored again on Daniel Nava’s two-out single in the fifth.

Lincoln Tops Storm In Preseason OT

tcstormLINCOLN, Neb. – Ludvig Hoff scored a breakaway goal in overtime for the Lincoln Stars to defeat the Tri-City Storm 4-3 at the Ice Box on Friday night.

Storm forwards Mark Petaccio, Aleksi Ainali and Chase Berger each scored goals in the loss, while goaltender Blake Weyrick made 33 saves.

The game got off to a fast start and saw three goals in just over three and a half minutes. Lincoln’s Ryan Jones opened the scoring when he put a puck on net that deflected past Storm goalie Blake Weyrick and gave his team a 1-0 lead.

Tri-City responded less than a minute later with a goal from forward Mark Petaccio. The Sicklerville, N.J. native took a pass from linemate Aleksi Ainali off a face-off and made his shot count, tying the game at 1-1.

After Lincoln’s Blake Christensen made it 2-1, Ainali responded for the Storm and re-tied the game at 2-2 on a pass from defenseman Bobby Nardella.

Late in the opening period, Storm forward Chase Berger got a pass off the boards in stride from defenseman Kevin Kerr and wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net to give Tri-City a 3-2 lead going into the first intermission.

No scoring in the second period kept the Storm in front going into the third.

After over 15 minutes of scoreless play in the final period, a late double minor penalty to Petaccio allowed the Stars a four-minute power play. Lincoln made their chance count when Christensen scored his second of the game to tie things up at 3-3 with just 1:05 remaining.

With the score tied, the teams elected to play a 3-on-3 overtime for five minutes. During the extra period, Hoff found himself all alone and beat Weyrick to give Lincoln their first preseason win in their fourth exhibition game.

Tri-City now has a record of 2-0-1 in preseason play.

The two teams will play a rematch in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.

Tri-City will finish up a three-game weekend on Sunday afternoon with a 4 p.m. game in Omaha against the Lancers.

The Storm will open the regular season in Lincoln on Sept. 26 in and return to Kearney for their home opener on Oct. 3 vs. Sioux Falls.

Wainwright Wins 18th as Cardinals Beat Rockies 5-1

colorado-rockiesST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright won his 18th game to tie for the major league lead, Matt Holliday hit a long three-run homer in the first inning and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Colorado Rockies 5-1 Friday night to stop a three-game losing streak.

Wainwright (18-9) allowed one run and six hits in eight innings with eight strikeouts and no walks. He retired his final 16 batters, improving to 7-1 against Colorado.

Clayton Kershaw and Johnny Cueto are the other 18-game winners.

Holliday ended a nine-game RBI drought and homered for the first time this month, sending a 467-drive off Jorge De La Rosa (13-11) into Big Mac Land beyond left field. It was the second-longest homer at 9-year-old Busch Stadium behind Holliday’s 469-foot drive against the Chicago Cubs’ Ryan Dempster on July 20, 2012.

The NL Central-leading Cardinals stayed 2½ games ahead of second-place Pittsburgh.

De La Rosa allowed four runs — three earned — and four hits in six innings. Colorado has scored just three runs during a four-game losing streak.

Huskers Serve Up Sweep of Denver

Nebraska-Volleyball-HuskersLincoln – The No. 11 Nebraska volleyball team won its fourth straight match but first at home this season, sweeping Denver 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) in the Ameritas Players Challenge at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Friday night.

The Huskers improved to 4-2, serving up a season-high 11 aces to match the most since 2005. Kelsey Fien led the NU attack with 11 kills and has now led the Huskers in kills in four of the five matches she’s played this season. Kadie Rolfzen had nine kills and hit a team-best .364. She added 10 digs for a double-double. Amber Rolfzen had six kills and 10 digs. Melanie Keil had a career-high eight kills and single-handedly outblocked Denver, which had seven blocks total. NU hit .281 for the match, while the Pioneers hit .153.

But the story of the night was Nebraska’s serving. The Huskers set the tone with five aces to account for half of their first 10 points to start the first set. Annika Albrecht, Justine Wong-Orantes and Mary Pollmiller each had three to lead NU. Wong-Orantes led the Huskers with 12 digs. Pollmiller had 28 assists.

Denver (5-3) was led by Ruth Okoye, who had 11 kills.

The Huskers were off and running in the first set after Pollmiller served up back-to-back aces to start the match. After Denver briefly tied it 2-2, the Huskers scored the next four to go up 6-2, keyed by consecutive aces again, this time by Albrecht. NU’s fifth ace of the set, courtesy of Amber Rolfzen, made it 10-4 and forced a Denver timeout. The Big Red built the lead to 18-8 and maintained the margin for a 25-15 victory. The Huskers’ five service aces in the set matched their season high for a match set against Eastern Kentucky last weekend. Nebraska hit .370 in the first set and committed no errors on 27 attacks.

Nebraska again jumped in front 2-0 in set two but this time never let the Pioneers even it up, cruising to a 9-2 lead with two kills each from Fien and Keil and back-to-back aces by Wong-Orantes. Nebraska pushed the lead to eight, 11-3, on another ace from Amber Rolfzen. Kadie Rolfzen’s swing made it 20-10 and she added another kill to make it 21-12, and Fien scored two of the Huskers’ final three points to finish out a 25-17 win.

The third set was much more competitive, as Denver took an early 4-2 lead before the Huskers rallied to tie it at 4-4 on an ace from Albrecht. The Huskers gained a little separation after Fien, Keil and Kadie Rolfzen strung together kills for an 11-8 lead. Denver got within two points midway through the set, but the Big Red pulled away to a 23-18 lead before finishing out the sweep.

The Huskers are back in action Saturday against Colgate at 7 p.m. to finish out the tournament. Colgate and Denver begin a tripleheader Saturday with an 11 a.m. match. Akron and Denver play at 4:30 p.m.

Earlier on Friday, Colgate defeated Akron 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 to improve to 3-2 on the season. Akron fell to 5-4.

Players’ Union Reps Approve HGH Testing for ’14

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — Hours after the players’ union voted Friday to accept an NFL proposal on drug policy changes that included HGH testing, the league says it is not a done deal.

Player representatives to the union also voted for changes to marijuana testing, classification for amphetamines, punishment for driving under the influence, and neutral arbitration on appeals.

But NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press: “There are unresolved issues. More negotiation ahead.”

Aiello did not specify which issues are not resolved, but called them “significant.”

Testing for human growth hormone was originally agreed upon in 2011, but the players have balked at the science in the testing and the appeals process for positive tests. If the proposal they voted on Friday is put into action, testing would begin for this season.

Wes Welker Could be Back on Field by Sunday

Wes Welker Denver Broncos FootballENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Wes Welker has passed concussion protocol and could be back on the field as soon as Sunday if the NFL signs off on a new drug policy approved by the players’ union.

Representatives of the NFL Players Association approved the comprehensive new policy Friday that includes implementation of testing for HGH and an increase in the threshold for testing positive for marijuana.

Welker was suspended four games for amphetamine use in the offseason, but punishment for that is being switched from the performance enhancers policy to the substance abuse program — except for in-season violations.

If the league approves the agreement, the Broncos’ slot receiver could be eligible to play when the Kansas City Chiefs visit Denver on Sunday.

Chiefs Starting Lineman Allen Likely Headed to IR

Jeff Allen
Jeff Allen

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs right tackle Jeff Allen had surgery Friday on his right elbow and will likely be out the rest of the season, the latest blow to a team already ravaged by injuries and suspensions.

Allen hurt his elbow after starting Sunday’s season-opening loss to Tennessee. In the same game, Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson and starting defensive tackle Mike DeVito ruptured their right Achilles tendons, ending their seasons.

Allen was supposed to be the starting left guard, but he moved to right tackle when Donald Stephenson was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy.

Ryan Harris is expected to start at right tackle when the Chiefs visit Denver on Sunday.
