Enhance Stadium Experience NFL Goal

nfl_logo2011-medNEW YORK (AP) — While 31 teams try to derail the Seahawks’ attempt to repeat, there are plenty of other challenges facing players, coaches and owners heading into opening week of the NFL. Many are along the sidelines and in the stands.

The NFL and its partners have been ahead of the curve in technology on television, but coaches were stuck using antiquated photo prints and cardboard play sheets. This season, coaches have the option of using NFL-approved tablets during games.

Even the curmudgeonly Bill Belichick has enthusiastically endorsed the technology.

“The sideline of the future is where we’re going,” says Troy Vincent, the league’s overseer of football operations.

At the Hall of Fame game to open the preseason, Vincent noted that Buffalo’s coaching staff was fully engaged with the tablets.

“We were not real sure if the Giants’ Tom Coughlin was buying it, but it was encouraging,” he said.

“Still photos will remain in place; you’ve got to have a backup plan. But you can see the players and the coaches quickly moving from one (image) on the tablet to the next to the next. We think with one season and an offseason, the coaches will get more familiar with it. The younger generation already is all over it, as you’d expect.”

Game officials will be wired up, too, much as soccer referees have been for years. That should improve communication on calls, perhaps leading to fewer huddles that slow the action.

NFL officiating director Dean Blandino admits the change is challenging.

“It’s an adjustment,” Blandino says. “You have people communicating with you on the wireless that you haven’t experienced before. We’ll work through the process. It’s an enhancement and we don’t want it to be a deterrent in any way to our primary objectives.”

Another of the league’s primary objectives is keeping people in the stadiums. It’s not quite so challenging early in the season, when the weather is good and everyone is in contention — well, maybe not in Buffalo and Oakland. Deeper into the season, it gets tougher.

“TV viewing experience of our games is so good with the NFL channels and the Red Zone and HD televisions and other options. We have to give people reasons to want to come to our games,” Giants owner John Mara says. “So making the in-stadium experience special and different is a priority.”

Fans in stadiums will have access to video replays that viewers at home don’t get. They will get Wi-Fi allowing them to track other games, their fantasy teams and to send selfies.

And, of course, they get to witness firsthand a long Adrian Peterson burst to the end zone, a Robert Quinn sack or a J.J. Watt swat of an attempted pass.

“I still believe nothing beats the experience of being at the stadium and seeing these great players live,” Mara says.

Some of those players won’t be seen when the season begins. A few — Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, for example — are injured and gone for the year. Others, such as Ravens running back Ray Rice, are suspended.

Mara expresses concerns about player conduct away from the field, even as he emphasizes a vast majority of NFL players never run into trouble.

“Player conduct has been an area of concentration because some of the things we see do damage the league’s image,” Mara says. “Any time a player is in any sort of trouble, it automatically becomes front page news. These are young men and, at that age a minority of them are getting into trouble from time to time.”

Thursday, Commissioner Roger Goodell announced tougher punishment for domestic violence.

“We look at all the offenses that involve players and the scenarios and we have gotten tough with the (punishments) and we will remain tough with them,” Mara said.

Vincent stresses the need for players to behave well on the field, too. An outstanding defensive back for 15 NFL seasons, he understands as well as anyone the intensity of game action, the “heat of the moment.”

He also knows that taunting fouls increased almost 400 percent from 2012 to 2013.

“Respect at the workplace is paramount,” Vincent says. “Yes, football is a highly emotional sport. But we believe with shared training and discussions with the players, we have seen a conscious effort in the preseason to reduce it. We have not even talked about taunting in preseason games.”

As for the challenge facing every franchise not calling Seattle home, that might be the most daunting of all. The Seahawks certainly want the opposition thinking that way.

“I love this opportunity that we have,” coach Pete Carroll says. “We are so fortunate to have this chance to come back after a season like that to see if we can find that kind of discipline and find that kind of ability to focus. It’s challenging, it’s difficult, it hasn’t happened a lot and we are going to see what happens.”

Chiefs Waive K Succop as They Reach 53-Man Limit

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have waived veteran kicker Ryan Succop and placed quarterback Tyler Bray and wide receiver Kyle Williams on injured reserve as they trimmed to the 53-man roster limit.

Succop was engaged in a heated competition for the kicking job with undrafted free agent Cairo Santos.

Ultimately, Succop’s contract may have played a big part in the decision. He was due $2 million this season while Santos will make just $422,000 with the Chiefs.

Bray and Williams were hurt in the Chiefs’ preseason finale against Green Bay.

Other players cut Saturday were defensive backs Malcolm Bronson, Jonathon Amaya, DeMarcus Van Dyke and Justin Rogers; linebackers Alonzo Highsmith, Devan Walker and Nico Johnson; defensive linemen Kyle Love, Kona Schwenke and Dominique Hamilton; offensive linemen Ricky Henry and J’Marcus Webb; wide receivers Mark Harrison and Fred Williams; fullback Jordan Campbell; and running back Charcandrick West.

Deeper Denver Broncos Cut Vickerson, Ihenacho

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos have released nine-year veteran defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and third-year safety Duke Ihenacho, a starter last season who had nine tackles in the Super Bowl.

They also let go of third quarterback Zac Dysert, who made the 53-man roster last year.

The Broncos added plenty of depth following their Super Bowl loss to Seattle, and Vickerson and Inhenacho paid the price.

Slow to recover from a dislocated hip that sidelined him down the stretch in 2013, Vickerson was unable to fend off free agent Marvin Austin.

Ihenacho was the odd man out in a crowded secondary that features free agent acquisition T.J. Ward at strong safety.

Teams must trim rosters to 53 active players by 4 p.m. ET.

Huskers Make FIBA Basketball World Cup Debuts

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – Two players with Nebraska ties saw action, but were on the losing end in their games at the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain today.

Husker sophomore Tai Webster started for New Zealand and totaled seven points, five rebounds and a pair of assists, but a late comeback by Turkey stymied New Zealand in a 76-73 loss.

New Zealand led 72-61 on Corey Webster’s jumper with 5:22 left, but Turkey stormed back with 15 unanswered points, taking the lead on Emir Preldzic’s 3-pointer with3:13 left.

Trailing 76-73, New Zealand had two shots in the final 20 seconds to tie the game, but 3-pointers from Corey Webster and Kirk Penny were off the mark.

Another former Husker was in action, as Jorge Brian Diaz played 6:32 in Puerto Rico’s 98-75 loss to Argentina, grabbing four rebounds, but missed both of his shots from the field.

Both Webster and Diaz will be in action on Sunday, as pool play continues. New Zealand takes on the Dominican Republic at 5:30 a.m. central, while Puerto Rico takes on Senegal at 10:30 a.m.

Broncos’ Hillman, Webster Fell Ill at Dallas

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Cornerback Kayvon Webster and running back Ronnie Hillman didn’t return with the Denver Broncos from their preseason finale in Dallas on Thursday night after falling ill. Both were taken to a hospital and Webster was kept overnight.

The Denver Post first reported the story Saturday. The Broncos confirmed that neither player flew with the team back to Denver but didn’t provide any information about the nature of their illnesses.

Neither Hillman nor Webster played against the Cowboys, although both participated in a pregame conditioning workout for players who wouldn’t see action Thursday night.

Hillman is Montee Ball’s primary backup, and Webster is a backup along with rookie Bradley Roby behind Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr.

Basketball World Cup has Record 45 NBA Players

NBA-BasketballBILBAO, Spain (AP) — The Basketball World Cup started Saturday with a record 45 current NBA players on the rosters of the 24 teams.

There were 75 players in the tournament who have played in the NBA, along with 17 more who have been drafted and whose rights are owned by NBA teams.

All 12 players on the U.S. roster are on NBA teams. Host Spain is next with six current NBA players.

Only three teams in the tournament have no players who have either played or been drafted by NBA clubs. Cleveland and Houston both have a league-high four players in the field.

The previous record was 44 active NBA players in the 2010 tournament.

MLB Replay Begins Slow Stroll Toward Postseason

mlb bigJohn Gibbons has a pretty standard rule for deciding when to discuss a bang-bang call with an umpire.

“We try to go out there anytime it’s close,” the Toronto manager says.

Same way across the majors: There have been more than 1,000 reviews so far in this new era of expanded replay — nearly half resulting in a reversal — and it’s only August.

Now get ready for an even longer postseason parade of that slow dance, where the skipper strolls onto the field, twirls around the ump and waits for the go-or-no sign from the dugout.

Makes sense, too. Good idea to check most every tag and trap, especially when a single missed call could mean the difference between winning the World Series and an early exit.

Mauch Leads the Dawgs to a Shutout Win over Columbus

North-Platte-Bulldogs-Football HelmetShane Mauch threw for 128 yards and four touchdowns while running for 165 yards to lead North Platte to a 34-0 win over Columbus Friday.

The Bulldogs win snapped an 11-game losing streak dating back to the 2012 season. North Platte got the ball on the Columbus 40-yard line after the defense forced a three-and-out inside the Discoverers’ 10-yard line. The seven play drive culminated in a 12-yard touchdown pass from the senior quarterback Mauch to senior receiver Jacob Zimbelman to take a 7-0 lead.

North Platte made another trip to the end zone in the second quarter thanks to the defense setting them up with great field position. Columbus quarterback Blake Bubak was scrambling inside his own 20 when he was hit from behind by junior linebacker Ricky Sandoval jarring the ball loose. Sophomore defensive end Trevon Weaver was right on top of the play and came up with the fumble recovery at the Columbus 18-yard line. Two plays later Mauch connected with senior fullback Jobie Loving for a 13-yard touchdown to make it 14-0.

The Dawgs scored one more time before going into halftime when sophomore kicker Kort Steele drilled a 33-yard field goal to give North Platte a 17-0 lead at the break.

Steele was in the spotlight early in the third quarter after North Platte’s first second half drive stalled. Coach Bernie Madison elected to kick a field goal from 50 yards out. Steele lined up with the ball on the right hash and kicked a line drive that bounced off the crossbar through the uprights for a 20-0 Bulldog lead.

North Platte scored on its next two possessions with a 12-yard pass from Mauch to senior wide receiver Cameron Cox and the final score was a four-yard pass from Mauch to Cox once again.

Columbus’ best chance to score came in the third quarter when North Platte gave them the ball inside the Bulldog 20-yard line. The Discoverers punted and when the ball landed it hit a North Platte player and Columbus jumped on it with just 17 yards to go to the end zone. The threat quickly ended though as junior defensive back Marcos Reyes intercepted Bubak at the goal line to give the ball back to North Platte.

The North Platte defense stood tall all night by not allowing Columbus to get a first down on seven of the Discoverers’ drives.

North Platte unofficially racked up 391 yards of offense and the defense only gave up 123 yards to Columbus. The Dawgs are now 1-0 to start the 2014 season and will next play at home on Friday, September 5 against Lincoln High. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Bauer Field and the game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1410 with the pregame show starting at 6:30 pm.

Team 1 2 3 4 Final
North Platte 7 10 10 7 34
