LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Brandin Bryant grew up hearing about the football exploits of his grandfather at Nebraska, and he dreamed of the day that he, too, would play at Memorial Stadium.

His time comes Saturday, except he’ll be wearing the blue and red of Florida Atlantic instead of the Cornhuskers’ scarlet and cream.

Bryant will begin his second season as a starting defensive lineman for the Owls on the same field where Charles Bryant in 1953 was among the first two African-Americans to letter for the Huskers since 1913.

“When I walk out of the tunnel, he’ll most likely be on my mind,” Brandin said. “I’ll try not to play with emotions. I’ll try to get it all out of the way in the locker room. But it would be unavoidable not to think about him and what he meant.”

Brandin was 11 when Charles died in 2004. During an interview, Brandin recalled going to his grandparents’ house and having Charles help him with homework, play tee ball with him in the backyard and just talk sports.

“And he’d make me cut the grass over there all the time, too,” Brandin said, laughing.

Charles was a multisport star at South High School in Omaha in the late 1940s and early ’50s. Nebraska didn’t offer athletic scholarships to blacks at the time, so against the advice of family and friends he walked on in 1951.

“There was an inertia within the black community in Omaha. The message was: ‘Don’t go there, you won’t get a chance,’ “Nebraska football historian Mike Babock said. “He went there and got a chance.”

Coach Bill Glassford put Charles on scholarship in 1952, and the offensive lineman received All-Big Seven honors in 1954 while helping lead the Huskers to the Orange Bowl against Duke.

Brandin said his grandfather was humble about his athletic achievements and never complained about the abuse he and teammate Jon McWilliams sometimes endured because they were black.

“This was before the civil rights movement, so you can imagine that,” Brandin said. “At the 1955 Orange Bowl game in Miami, he had to stay at some person’s house and sleep on the floor because he couldn’t stay in the hotel with the team. He wasn’t allowed to eat with the team and had to go to the colored section of restaurants. A lot of crazy stuff.”

Brandin played at North High in Omaha, earned honorable mention for all-state honors in 2010 and had hoped to go to Nebraska. The Huskers talked to him about possibly walking on, but their interest waned and he went to Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College for a year.

Carl Pelini, the former Nebraska defensive coordinator, took over as head coach at Florida Atlantic in 2012 and signed Brandin. Bryant has played in all 24 games the past two seasons and was a key member of a defense that ranked 11th nationally last year.

The Owls, with new coach Charlie Partridge, will be big underdogs against the 22nd-ranked Huskers. They were 6-6 last year, when Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis were forced out with four games left.

Brandin said the importance of Saturday’s game hit him while he was in Omaha in May visiting his grandma, Mollie Bryant, at the same house where he used to spend so much time with his grandpa. Charles Bryant’s trophies and plaques are still prominently displayed, as is the scrapbook his grandma kept.

“In terms of team and preparation, I like to take every game the same,” Brandin said. “In terms of my family being there and coming home, yes, it is very special.”

Huskers Head into Game Week

husker footballLincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska football team concluded its third week of the 2014 Fall Camp Saturday afternoon, as the Huskers went through a ‘situational walk-through’ for just over one hour inside of Memorial Stadium.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with media briefly following practice, noting that he likes the leadership presented by some of the more experienced players on the Husker Blackshirt defense.

“Josh Mitchell and Coop (Corey Cooper) are ones, and Banderas by the nature of his position,” Pelini said. “We have some guys that have some experience that have been through it and do a nice job of leading that group.”

Junior pre-season All-American candidate Randy Gregory is also a leader on the NU defense according to Pelini, but as a leader by his actions, rather than being vocal.

“Randy is a really good football player and he is a quiet guy,” Pelini said. “He is a leader by how he plays and by his actions on the field. He is not a real vocal guy but he is when he needs to be.”

Pelini mentioned that there has not been captains chosen for the upcoming season yet, as well as current walk-on players that will be awarded scholarships for the upcoming academic school year. Also, there has been no announcements on any freshmen that will be redshirting or not for the upcoming season. An announcement should come this week.

The Huskers will be back on the practice fields Monday as the Nebraska football team will enter game week preparations for the 2014 season opener versus Florida Atlantic just one week from today, on August 30. Check back here or at Huskers.com for a practice report and video coverage following practice immediately.

Nebraska fans are reminded about their opportunity to be on hand at Memorial Stadium as the Huskers kick off the 2014 season. Fans can purchase the Cornhusker Kickoff Combo package for the Florida Atlantic game on Aug. 30 and the matchup with McNeese State on Sept. 6. The two-game package can be purchased at Huskers.com for $100. Fans can also purchase single-game tickets to all games other than the Miami and Minnesota games at Huskers.com.

Cuddyer Heads to DL for 3rd Time this Season

DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have placed outfielder Michael Cuddyer on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, and they have activated right-hander Christian Bergman.

Bergman will start Sunday against Miami after missing 51 games with a broken left hand. His last start was June 20 against Milwaukee.

The team also transferred Carlos Gonzalez (knee) to the 60-day DL.

This has been a frustrating season for Cuddyer, who’s making his third trip to the DL this season. The NL batting champion also was out with a strained left hamstring and missed more than two months with a fractured left shoulder.

The 35-year-old Cuddyer has played in 34 games and is hitting .331. He became the seventh Colorado player to hit for the cycle, on Aug. 17 against Cincinnati.

Chiefs’ Offense On 0-for-16 Skid in Scoring TDs

Kansas City Chiefs LogoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs had three decent opportunities to finally score a touchdown with their first-team offense on Saturday night. They came up empty on all of them.

Twice, Alex Smith was picked off by the Minnesota Vikings. The other time, coach Andy Reid opted to kick a 21-yard field goal rather than punch it into the end zone on fourth down.

So much for building some positive vibes heading into their preseason finale.

“You know, I think tonight was disappointing in the sense that this was the game week and we treated it as such, so there was a little more game-planning and preparation,” Smith said after a 30-12 loss. “You’d love to have shown a little better.”

That goes for games against Cincinnati and Carolina, too.

Athlete Asks Judge to Reject NCAA Head-Injury Deal

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsCHICAGO (AP) — A former San Diego State football player wants a judge to reject the proposed settlement of a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA, saying it will deny billions in damages to athletes who suffered head injuries.

The request came in a new federal court filing on behalf of Anthony Nichols, whose head-injury lawsuit was one of ten consolidated into a single case in U.S. District Court.

Under the settlement proposed in July, the NCAA would set aside $70 million to diagnose current and former athletes for brain trauma.

Friday’s filing criticizes provisions barring the class as a whole from seeking a single sum in damages.

It says most individuals couldn’t afford to sue the NCAA and that athletes “get nothing but are forced to give up everything” in the settlement.

Report: Broncos K Matt Prater Faces 4-Game Ban

Matt Prater Denver BroncosDENVER (AP) — Matt Prater, the NFL’s best kicker, is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, according to the Denver Post.

The Broncos declined to comment on the report, and neither Prater nor his lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, replied to text messages from The Associated Press early Sunday morning.

The newspaper said Prater’s suspension was alcohol-related. He has been in the league’s substance abuse program since he was charged with DUI on Aug. 12, 2001.

Prater led the league last year by making 25 of 26 field goals (96.2 percent), including a record-breaking 64-yarder in December against Tennessee. He led the league with 81 kickoff touchbacks.

Prater missed two of four field goal tries this preseason. His backup is Mitch Ewald, a rookie from Indiana. But the Broncos might look to bring in a veteran kicker while he serves his suspension.

Dickerson’s Hit in 13th Lifts Rockies past Marlins

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Corey Dickerson’s single to right in the 13th inning scored Nolan Arenado to give the Colorado Rockies a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday night.

It was the second big hit for Dickerson, who sent the game into extra innings with a home run to the third deck in the ninth.

Matt Belisle (4-6), the ninth Rockies pitcher, got the win with one inning of perfect relief.

Arenado led off the 13th with a double off the wall in left field against Sam Dyson (2-1). Dickerson followed with a liner to right, and Arenado easily beat the throw from Giancarlo Stanton.

It was the sixth walk-off win for the Rockies this season.

Adeiny Hechavarria gave the Marlins a 4-3 lead in the ninth with an RBI single off closer LaTroy Hawkins. Dickerson tied it in the bottom half with his 19th home run of the season, hit off Steve Cishek.

Texans Come Back to Beat Broncos 18-17

DenverBroncosDENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning and Emmanuel Sanders found their rhythm after an early miscue, connecting for two long touchdowns in the final 67 seconds of the first half of the Denver Broncos’ 18-17 preseason loss to the Houston Texans on Saturday night.

Manning was whistled for taunting following his second TD toss to Sanders. The Broncos said that was apparently the first such penalty in the five-time MVP’s career.

Manning ran up to D.J. Swearinger and gave an earful to the Texans’ swaggering second-year safety who leveled Wes Welker with a forearm to the face one play earlier. Welker, who has a history of head injuries, was evaluated for a possible concussion.

Swearinger was also at the center of several skirmishes during the teams’ three days of intense joint practices during the week.

Guthrie Overcomes 1st Pitch HR, Royals Beat Texas

kc-royalsARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie gave up a home run on his first pitch and not much else, pitching the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers 6-3 Saturday night for their 24th win in 30 games.

Alex Gordon had two hits, including a first-inning homer for his 15th of the season, and made a diving catch in left field for the AL Central leaders.

Guthrie (10-10) won for the fifth time in six starts. Shin-Soo Choo hit a leadoff homer — after that, Guthrie blanked the Rangers on six more hits before leaving after the eighth. He struck out two and walked one.

The Royals broke a 1-all tie by scoring three runs in the fifth inning, capitalizing on the wildness of Nick Tepesch (4-8). He gave up three four-pitch walks and two singles that inning.

Welker Evaluated for Possible Concussion

Wes Welker Denver Broncos FootballDENVER (AP) — Broncos receiver Wes Welker is being evaluated for a possible concussion after taking a hit to the head from Houston defensive back D.J. Swearinger in a preseason game Saturday night.

Welker was leveled by Swearinger soon after catching a short pass over the middle late in the second quarter. Swearinger drew an unnecessary roughness penalty for the hit on Welker, who has a history of concussions and wears a bigger helmet to further protect his head.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning gave Swearinger an earful after throwing a 29-yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders. Manning ran down the field and muttered something to Swearinger, which earned the QB a taunting penalty.

Welker missed the final 3½ games last season after sustaining his second concussion in a three-week span.
