Husker Secondary Depth Impressing Papuchis

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team continued Fall Camp on Thursday evening with a 75-minute practice at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center.

After practice, Head Coach Bo Pelini addressed the media briefly, announcing that junior nickel back Charles Jackson will miss the entire 2014 season due to a knee injury suffered this week.

Jackson, a native of Spring, Texas was expected to compete for the starting nickel back job, a key position in the Husker defense.

“For his (Jackson) long term best interest, they are going to fix it, so he will be out for the year,” Pelini said. “Fortunately for Charles, he has a redshirt year so he still has two years left. It is not a horrible injury, it is a very unusual injury.”

Pelini added, “He will come back and be better than ever,” Pelini said. “It was a hard deal for him, he has put in a lot of work in to it, I feel for him right now.”

Besides the injury, Pelini mentioned that there should not be much more change to the defense this fall. Pelini said that, “We are good, I like the way we are lined up right now, we are not going to make any changes.”

Players that are likely to step in to fill the void left by Jackson are junior defensive back Byerson Cockrell of Columbus, Miss., and true freshman Joshua Kalu of Houston, Texas.

Cockrell, a junior college transfer out of East Mississippi CC, joined the program in January. The 6-0, 185-pound Cockrell was impressive throughout spring ball, earning significant action with the top defensive unit.

“I love Byerson Cockrell, he is a really good player,” Pelini said. “He is a very smart and very intelligent football player.”

Defensive coordinator John Papuchis also likes how Cockrell has improved since joining the Huskers this past January.

“He (Cockrell) is a fast learner, he is all business every day that he takes the field, he is trying to get better,” Pelini said. “That has nothing to do with being ‘more in the spotlight’ that is just how he has been since he has gotten here.”

Kalu, a 6-1, 170-pound Houston native made 51 tackles and had four interceptions as a senior at Alief Taylor High School, with three returns for touchdowns. Kalu’s play earned him All-Greater Houston first-team honors from the Houston Chronicle, and he was also a first-team all-district selection.

Papuchis talked about the strong play by the five newcomers in the secondary as well, noting that the players are learning very quickly.

“In four days I have been pretty impressed, you can tell they were well-coached in high school,” Papuchis said. “The things that we are coaching and installing, it doesn’t seem like they are hearing it for the first time.”

Nebraska will put on full pads for the first time during the preseason on Friday, and wrap up week one of fall camp with a Saturday practice.

Nebraska fans are reminded about their opportunity to be on hand at Memorial Stadium as the Huskers kick off the 2014 season. Fans can purchase the Cornhusker Kickoff Combo package for the Florida Atlantic game on Aug. 30 and the matchup with McNeese State on Sept. 6. The two-game package can be purchased at Huskers.com for $100. Fans can also purchase single-game tickets to all games other than the Miami and Minnesota games at Huskers.com.

Baez Hits 2 HRs, Drives in 4 as Cubs Beat Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Rookie Javier Baez hit two more homers and drove in four runs Thursday, leading the Chicago Cubs over the Colorado Rockies 6-2.

The Cubs’ 21-year-old prized prospect also singled to back rookie Kyle Hendricks (3-1).

Baez homered in his major league debut Tuesday, delivering a game-deciding shot in the 12th inning at Coors Field.

Baez led off the sixth inning with a shot down the left-field line against starter Yohan Flande (0-4). Baez hit a two-run shot off reliever Juan Nicasio into the Colorado bullpen in right in the eighth.

Castro followed Baez’s shot in the sixth with his 12th home run. It was the fourth time this season Chicago has hit back-to-back homers.

Hendricks pitched a career-high eight innings after the start of the game was delayed 39 minutes because of rain.

Durant Withdraws from US National Team

USA-BasketballKevin Durant has withdrawn from the U.S. national team, the biggest loss yet for a weakening American team.

The NBA’s MVP informed USA Basketball on Thursday that he was “physically and mentally drained from the NBA season,” USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said in a statement.

The Oklahoma City Thunder star was the MVP of the world championship in 2010, leading the Americans to that title for the first time since 1994. He also started on their gold medal-winning team in the 2012 Olympics.

His withdrawal comes less than a week after Indiana’s Paul George was lost to a broken right leg.

MLS Assesses Its Future Following Big Summer

mlsPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — This summer showed Major League Soccer that attracting U.S. fans to the game is no longer an issue. It’s engaging them that the league sees as its next step.

MLS wrapped up its All-Star game celebration Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over German power Bayern Munich.

The match at Portland’s Providence Park capped a wildly successful few months for the sport stateside, following the U.S. national team’s run to the round of 16 in Brazil that drew record television ratings.

And it was certainly not lost on the league when an exhibition match between Manchester United and Real Madrid drew nearly 110,000 fans at the Big House in Michigan last week.

MLS is poised to expand to 24 teams by 2020, with a focus on steady — but not too rapid — growth.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is welcoming its newest group of inductees.

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern led the class of 10 that received its membership blazers on Thursday. The induction gala is Friday night down the street from the hoops shrine.

Also in the class of 2014 are former NBA stars Alonzo Mourning and Mitch Richmond and NCAA championship-winning coaches Nolan Richardson of Arkansas and Gary Williams of Maryland.

The women’s team from Immaculata College, which won three straight national championships in the 1970s, is also being honored, along with Lithuania star Sarunas Marciulionis.

Former Indiana Pacers coach Bob “Slick” Leonard, the late Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton of the New York Knicks and the late Guy Rodgers of Temple round out the class.

Rockies Recall RHP Nicasio, Option RHP Brown

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have recalled right-hander Juan Nicasio from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned righty Brooks Brown to the Sky Sox.

Nicasio is available out of the bullpen for Thursday’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

Nicasio began the season on the opening day roster and was 5-5 with a 5.92 ERA in 14 starts. He was optioned to Colorado Springs on June 16.

Brown has had two stints the Rockies this season and made his major league debut July 6. He is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 10 appearances with Colorado Springs.

2 Girls May Play in Little League Regional Final

Little League Baseball LogoBRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Kayla Roncin and Mo’ne (moh-NAY’) Davis are competing to make it to the Little League World Series, a rare feat for girls. But to get there, one girl’s team may have to knock off the other’s.

Mo’ne is a star pitcher for Taney Youth Baseball Association Little League in Philadelphia, while Kayla typically plays first base for her team in Toms River, New Jersey, and is known for her solid hitting and fielding. If their teams win Friday in the semifinals in Bristol, they’ll face each other Sunday in the regional championship to advance to the World Series next week in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

A Little League spokesman says it may be the first time two girls are competing at the same time in the regional tournament for a World Series spot.

NCAA Board Hands 5 Biggest Conferences More Power

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA board of directors has overwhelmingly approved a sweeping package plan that will give the five biggest conferences the ability to create their some of their own rules.

If the legislation approved Thursday withstands an override attempt, the five wealthiest Division I conferences could start exercising their new autonomy as early as Oct. 1.

The SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12 will have the ability to implement some rules on their own, though probably not policies on rules violations. But a stipend for athletes that goes beyond currently allowed limits of tuition, room and board, books and fees, seems likely.

Commissioners and school leaders from the power conferences have until Oct. 1 to create a wish list of issues they want to handle on their own.

McIlroy, Woods Going Different Directions at PGA

PGA Championship 2014 ValhallaLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Tiger Woods arrived at Valhalla on Thursday with far less fanfare, and a lot more attention.

The PGA Championship got underway when club pro Brian Norman hit the opening tee shot down the middle. Woods was in the feature group in the morning with Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington. It’s rare when Woods and Mickelson are in the same group at a major, though the hype was different this time.

Woods withdrew from a World Golf Championship just four days ago with a back injury. He returned on Wednesday — with live television showing Woods parking his car and tying his golf shoes — and proclaimed he was fit.

Woods is the focus. Rory McIlroy is the favorite, coming off wins at the British Open and at Firestone.
