ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Marvin Austin was an afterthought in the Denver Broncos’ $110 million defensive makeover this offseason.
Long after fellow free agents DeMarcus Ware, Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward signed their mega deals and posed with their orange jerseys, Austin slipped into town in May and quietly began his latest comeback.
The fourth-year defensive tackle who signed a one-year, $570,000 contract might just prove to be general manager John Elway’s latest rummage-sale find to produce a big payoff.
Lincoln — University of Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles completed his staff on Tuesday with the hiring of Brett Sapp as administrative coordinator for the Husker program. Sapp replaces Teddy Owens, who was promoted to director of basketball operations earlier this summer.
In Sapp’s new role, he will assist in daily operations of the Husker basketball program, on-campus recruiting and other program duties, including student-athlete outreach, and serving as an assistant to Coach Miles.
Sapp is familiar with the Husker basketball program, as he has served as an intern in the basketball office for the last two seasons. In that role, he assisted the coaching and administrative staffs on daily functions, including public relations, compliance and recruiting, as well as played major role in the Husker Buddies youth camp, as the camp has more than tripled over the last two years.
Miles said that Sapp brings a unique background to the Husker program, as he was not only collegiate player who won two Division III national titles at Washington University in St. Louis, but also served an internship at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and was a summer associate at Rembolt-Ludtke, LLP.
“Brett will play an important part in our program, and without question will help us take Husker Basketball to new heights,” said Miles. “He is very intelligent, organized and has unique and innovative ideas that will make a mark on our program and team.”
A native of Ashland, Neb., and a three-sport performer at Ashland-Greenwood High School, Sapp received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2011, and is currently attending law school at the University of Nebraska. While at Washington University in St. Louis, he helped the school to a pair of national titles (2007-08 and 2008-09) and served as team captain in 2010-11. While at Nebraska, Sapp was a member of UNL’s National Sports Forum Case Cup Champion in 2014.
Michigan State has played in two of the three Big Ten title games, is the defending Rose Bowl champion and on the best run in program history with 42 wins in four years.
Yet the Spartans cling to an underdog mentality. It’s the product of being overshadowed historically by Michigan and Ohio State. Coach Mark Dantonio never wants his team to stop playing with that edge.
The Spartans likely will have to beat the Buckeyes to win the East Division. They also have a major September test with a road game against Oregon.
Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin are the top contenders in the West.

Lincoln – The Nebraska basketball team will face a tough challenge in the opening round of the 2014 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, when the Huskers face homestanding Hawaii in its tournament opener. The Huskers and Rainbow Warriors will tip off at Midnight (central) on Dec. 23, in a game televised nationally on ESPNU from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
The Huskers, who return all five starters from a team that went 19-13 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, face a Rainbow Warrior squad that returns eight letterwinners from a team that won 20 games, its highest win total in a decade, in 2013-14. Hawaii is led by junior forward Isaac Fotu, who earned first-team All-Big West honors by averaging 14.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Fotu is a teammate of Husker sophomore guard Tai Webster on New Zealand’s national team this summer. Hawaii was 14-5 at the Stan Sheriff Center in 2013-14.
Other first-round matchups on Monday, Dec. 22, include Ohio University vs. George Washington (1:30 p.m.), DePaul vs. Colorado (3:30 p.m.) and Loyola Marymount vs. Wichita State (10 p.m.). Fans in Lincoln will see the Huskers play twice on television on Dec. 23, as Nebraska will face either defending Missouri Valley Champion Wichita State or Loyola Marymount in the second round on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
Nebraska is 2-6 against Hawaii all-time with all eight previous meetings taking place in the state of Hawaii. While the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is in its sixth year of existence, Nebraska has squared off with Hawaii three other times in holiday tournaments (1979, 1997 and 2006) when the Huskers played in the Rainbow Classic. The Huskers will be looking for their first win over Hawaii since 1976.
Nebraska is 6-5 all-time against Wichita State, but the teams have not met in the regular season since 1993. The last meeting between the Huskers and Shockers, who went 35-1 and finished the 2013-14 regular season ranked second in the country, was a WSU win in the first round of the 2011 NIT. The Huskers have faced Loyola Marymount only once, a 67-66 win on Dec. 12, 1980.
The multi-day, destination event will feature 12 games over three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracketed-tournament format. Three of the 12 matchups, including the championship game, will be showcased on ESPN2. ESPNU will carry seven games, and one will be exclusive to ESPN3.
Five of the participating teams appeared in the 2013-14 postseason, including Nebraska, Wichita State, Colorado, George Washington, all of which earned second-round berths in the NCAA Championship. Ohio advanced through the quarterfinals of the Collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament.
Lighting up the night sky were the IMCA Superstars that compete at Dawson County Raceway along with the visiting Great Plains IMCA Stock Car Series that rocketed around dirt oval in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday evening.
The big winner in the stock car division was Casey Werkmeister of Maywood, Nebraska. Werkmeister was joined by Kyle Rohleder, Chad Dolan and Dillon Thompson in the winners circle.
Completing the sweep was easier said than done for Casey Werkmeister, as the Maywood Missle captured the win in the Feature, Pole Dash and his heat race for the IMCA Stock Cars. By winning the Pole Dash, Werkmeister chose to pocket the cash for the win and invert the top twelve starting positions in the feature event. It took Werkmeister most of the Feature to work through traffic, but he led the laps that meant the most in leading the final five laps to capture the victory. On the back bumper of the winner, Mike Nichols of Harlan, Iowa was second overall in the Feature, after leading the four laps prior to Werkmeister snaring the lead. Lance Borgman of Beatrice, Nebraska started inside the top five and was able to stay away from incidents and was able to earn a podium finish in third place overall. Jason Rogers of Selden, Kansas and Maywood’s Kyle Werkmeister rounded out the top five finishers in the feature.
Winning his second straight feature at DCR in the IMCA Modified division was Kyle Rohleder of Wakeeney, Kansas. Rohleder has hit a hot streak at the Lexington oval, with his third feature win of the 2014 season after he drove around the cushion to gain the lead on the sixth place to cruise to the victory. Clay Sellard of Ellis, Kansas was able to work his way into contention from his fifth row starting position to net a runner-up finish. Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, Nebraska was the early leader from the onset and he was able to stay among the frontrunners to earn the third place accolades.
Getting to the front early and avoiding traffic, Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nebraska powered his way to the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature win. Dolan got to the front and led the fourth lap by less than a fender, before relinquishing the lead to Dillon Schultz of North Platte. By the eighth lap, Dolan had regained the lead and this time he would not look back as he was smooth sailing to the checkered flag finish.
During a seventh lap traffic jam, Dillon Thompson of Campbell darted from the smoke and into the lead to hold onto the victory in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Thompson snared the lead on the seventh lap and was able to hold off the tough challenge on his rear bumper for the remainder of the feature event. Kyle Bond of Gibbon, Nebraska was high on the wheel from the onset and was able to earn a runner-up finish. In his best finish of the 2014 season at DCR, Ryan Gardine of Bertrand, Nebraska was third overall in the feature, after leading the first six laps of the event.
The racing action will continue to be action-packed this coming week, as the IMCA drivers pilot their hotrods in hopes of earning a trip to the winners circle on Jeremy Trompke Memorial Night at Dawson County Raceway this Sunday, August 10th.
The Nebraska football team hit the practice field for the first time in preparation for the 2014 season on Monday night, going through a one-hour and 40-minute workout in shorts and helmets inside the Hawks Center and on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.
The Monday evening workout began four weeks of practice for Nebraska in advance of the Huskers’ season opener against Florida Atlantic on Aug. 30. Nebraska will conduct single practices in the evening through Friday, before a mid-day practice on Saturday.
Head Coach Bo Pelini enters his seventh year at the helm of the Big Red. The 2014 team includes 14 returning starters from last year, when NU finished 9-4 including a Gator Bowl victory versus Georgia on New Year’s Day. Pelini has guided each of his first six Nebraska teams to nine wins or more, and Nebraska is one of only three schools to win at least nine games each year since 2008.
Pelini met with the media today after practice, noting that practice was just what you would expect after the first day of fall camp.
“I thought it was what you expect after the first day, I liked the tempo and I thought it was an efficient practice,” Pelini said. “I think guys competed and there were a lot of first-day mistakes.”
Entering the 2014 season, Pelini mentioned that he and the coaching staff decided to cut down a few things at practice, in the hopes to help the overall tempo of practice.
“Just a few pre-practice things, we shortened individual time a hair. I think if I count the reps it is not much different than what we have done on a normal basis,” Pelini said. “We just did it more efficiently. I like the way it looked the first day.”
According to Pelini, sophomore quarterback Tommy Armstrong impressed during practice this evening.
“I liked what I saw out of Tommy today, he is very confident and he is under control,” Pelini said. “He really understands the offense.”
*Pelini announced that sophomore long snapper Gabe Miller will be day-to-day with a minor injury, as well as freshman linebacker Jaevon Walton will miss a few days due to a personal issue.
Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Tuesday evening for their second workout of camp. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.
NEW YORK (AP) — A person with knowledge of the details says the U.S. men’s national team has cut John Wall, Bradley Beal and Paul Millsap, leaving the roster at 16 players.
With Paul George lost to a broken right leg, the Americans will have to drop four more players before the World Cup of Basketball later this month in Spain.
The Americans made the cuts Monday that had been planned for Saturday but delayed after George’s injury, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the roster moves were going to be announced Tuesday. They were first reported by Yahoo Sports.
The remaining players will report to Chicago for practices that begin Aug. 14.
Players remaining who hope to make the final 12-man roster for Spain are Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant, Chicago’s Derrick Rose, Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving, New Orleans’ Anthony Davis, Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Houston’s James Harden, Atlanta’s Kyle Korver, Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins, Dallas’ Chandler Parsons, Utah’s Gordon Hayward, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Portland’s Damian Lillard, Denver’s Kenneth Faried, Detroit’s Andre Drummond and Brooklyn’s Mason Plumlee.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory wants to be known for being more than just a pass rusher.
After leading the Big Ten with 10 1/2 sacks last season, he says he needs to become better as a run-stopper.
Gregory’s difficulty holding his ground against the run stemmed from his struggle to maintain weight. He dropped as low as 230 pounds last season. Last week, the 6-foot-6 Gregory was up to 248.
Some NFL draft projections have Gregory listed in the upper half of the first round next year. Gregory said he wouldn’t decide until after the season whether to enter the draft as an underclassman. But he acknowledged he bought an insurance policy two months ago to protect himself in case an injury causes his draft position to drop.
