Royals Hosmer Back in Lineup, Vargas Improving

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer is back in the lineup for Tuesday night’s game against Minnesota after starting just once in the last seven games because of a bruised hand.

Hosmer pronounced himself fit after taking batting practice against rehabbing left-hander Jason Vargas, who threw four innings in a simulated game at Kauffman Stadium.

Vargas has been on the disabled list since July 10 following an appendectomy. Manager Ned Yost says it is possible he could return to the rotation this weekend.

In other news, backup catcher Erik Kratz and touted prospect Christian Colon arrived in the clubhouse following Monday’s trade with Toronto. Kratz came over from the Blue Jays while Colon was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to take the spot of departed infielder Danny Valencia.

Justin Morneau Colorado Rockies BaseballCHICAGO (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have activated first baseman Justin Morneau and left-handed pitcher Boone Logan from the disabled list.

Morneau was batting fifth in Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.

The Rockies also recalled infielder Cristhian Adames from Triple-A Colorado Springs. The Rockies optioned infielder Ben Paulsen and right-handed pitchers Brooks Brown and Chad Bettis to Triple-A.

Broncos Harris Passes Physical, Will Return to Practice

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The last of the Denver Broncos’ defensive starters who missed the Super Bowl has been cleared to return to practice.

Cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who tore his left ACL in the playoffs and underwent surgery after the season, passed his physical and was taken off the PUP list Tuesday.

Second-year pro Kayvon Webster has been getting the bulk of the first-team snaps during the absence of Harris, who will ease back into the mix, doing individual and 7-on-7 drills at first.

Harris’ ligament wasn’t completely torn when he got hurt against San Diego and the Broncos are optimistic he’ll be able to return to the starting lineup by the season opener Sept. 7 against Indianapolis and resume his role as a leader on Denver’s defense.

Arizona Cardinal John Abraham Charged with DUI

arizona-cardinalsATLANTA (AP) — Authorities say Arizona Cardinals linebacker John Abraham was arrested on a drunken driving charge a month ago in the Atlanta area.

Abraham has been absent from the team’s training camp since Friday.

DeKalb County Jail records show that the 36-year-old was taken into custody June 29 and released the same day.

The records show Abraham was charged with driving under the influence involving alcohol, as well as stopping, standing or parking in a prohibited place.

Records from the jail do not indicate whether the case had been resolved as of Tuesday, nor do they list an attorney for Abraham.

The Cardinals have said only that Abraham has been absent from camp for personal reasons.

Abraham has also played for the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.

NCAA Settles Head Injury Lawsuit

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsCHICAGO (AP) — The NCAA has agreed to settle a class-action head injury lawsuit.

A federal court filing obtained by The Associated Press says the NCAA will create a $70 million fund to test current and former college athletes for brain injuries. Players can use the results later as grounds for suing for damages.

The NCAA also agreed to implement a single return-to-play policy spelling out how all teams must treat players who receive blows to the head.

The settlement applies to multiple sports, including football, hockey, soccer, basketball, wrestling, field hockey and lacrosse. It covers both men and women.

The filing Tuesday in Chicago notifies a judge that the parties have struck a deal after nearly a year of talks. Ten similar suits filed nationwide were consolidated into this lawsuit.

Lakers Finally Confirm Byron Scott is New Coach

los-angeles-lakersLOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers have confirmed Byron Scott is their new head coach.

The Lakers finally made the long-anticipated announcement Monday night in a news release.

Scott told reporters last weekend he had been hired by the Lakers, who haven’t had a head coach since Mike D’Antoni resigned April 30.

Scott is the former head coach for New Jersey, New Orleans and Cleveland, reaching two NBA Finals with the Nets. He was the NBA’s coach of the year in 2008.

Scott also was a shooting guard for the Lakers for 11 seasons, playing alongside Magic Johnson during the Showtime era. He was a teammate of Lakers star Kobe Bryant during his final NBA season.

Scott spent last season as an analyst on the Lakers’ television network.

Wada Earns 1st MLB Win as Cubs Beat Rockies

colorado-rockiesCHICAGO (AP) — Tsuyoshi Wada earned his first big league win, pitching seven strong innings Monday night as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Colorado Rockies 4-1.

Anthony Rizzo drove in two runs to back Wada (1-1).

In only his third career start in the majors, Wada cut through the Colorado lineup, allowing one run and five hits. It was a far cry from his last outing, when he lasted four innings and gave up five runs in a loss to San Diego.

The sole blemish on Wada’s performance came in the sixth when the Rockies got three hits, capped by Nolan Arenado’s RBI single.

Pedro Strop worked out of a jam in the eighth inning and Hector Rondon worked a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 16 chances.

Yohan Flande (0-3) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings.

Northwestern Coach: Union Push Unified Team

Big-Ten-LogoCHICAGO (AP) — No matter how this season unfolds, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald insists there is no more unified team than his Wildcats.

He credits the push to unionize.

Fitzgerald says he’s “proud of the maturity” his players displayed as the story unfolded. He spoke Monday on the first day of the Big Ten’s two-day media event.

Northwestern is at the forefront of the movement, with former quarterback Kain Colter leading the push to form the first union for college athletes.

A regional director of the National Labor Relations Board ruled in March that Northwestern’s full scholarship players can bargain with the school as employees. Players voted in April on whether to form the first union for college athletes. The result is not known because the NLRB impounded the ballots.

Thomas Still Absent from Broncos Camp

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos star Demaryius Thomas is missing his seventh workout of training camp.

Coach John Fox had said Sunday he hoped to have Thomas back at practice Monday morning, but the wide receiver was apparently still making his way back from Georgia following the death of his grandmother.

Thomas caught a team-best 92 passes for 1,430 yards and 14 touchdowns last year. He also set a Super Bowl record with 13 receptions.

His agent and the Broncos have exchanged proposals on a long-term contract. General manager John Elway said he didn’t walk talks to drag on past the first week of August.

DeMarcus Ware, who bruised a leg Sunday, was among the nicked-up players held out of Monday morning’s practice.

Chiefs Offensive Line a Grab-Bag of Bodies in Training Camp

Kansas City Chiefs HelmetST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The presumptive favorite to win the starting right guard spot with the Kansas City Chiefs worked out with the third team on Monday. The guy who is challenging him for the spot slid over to center during another portion of the workout.

Rishaw Johnson and Zach Fulton are just the start of the offensive line shuffle.

After watching three linemen who started last season depart in free agency — all within hours of each other — the Chiefs are trying to cobble together some sort of protection for quarterback Alex Smith that can also manage to open up running lanes for Jamaal Charles during training camp.

And with lingering questions about the health of left tackle Eric Fisher and an ankle injury to starting right tackle Donald Stephenson, that job hasn’t gotten a whole lot easier.
