It’s All Over But the Arguing in Sterling Trial

donald-sterlingLOS ANGELES (AP) — Only final arguments and a ruling remain in the trial to determine whether Donald Sterling’s estranged wife can sell the Los Angeles Clippers to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion.

Lawyers for Sterling plan to argue Monday that Shelly Sterling had no right to make the deal with Ballmer, even though Donald Sterling had given her written authority to pursue a sale.

The attorneys also say she tricked Donald Sterling into taking mental exams that found he had signs of the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

That finding was sufficient for him to be removed as a trustee of the Sterling Family Trust and allow Shelly Sterling to move forward with the sale of the team.

Later in the process, however, Donald Sterling tried to stop the sale by dissolving the trust.

Santana went 3 for 3 and reached base in all five plate appearances. He homered in a four-run fifth inning and hit another drive in ninth for his fifth career multihomer game and his second of the series.

In his past six games, Santana is 14 for 23, including three doubles and 10 RBIs.

Ryan Raburn and Yan Gomes also homered for the Indians, who had lost six straight at Kauffman Stadium.

Fans Finally Get to See the AFC Champions

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are playing in front of their fans for the first time since the Super Bowl.

The team had to close its Dove Valley training facilities at training camp because of an ongoing $35 million construction project.

To accommodate their fans, the Broncos are holding three workouts at Sports Authority Field over the next week.

Sunday marked the first chance for fans to get to see Peyton Manning this summer along with the Broncos’ draft class and free agents T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware and Emmanuel Sanders.

Coach John Fox said, “I think our players are excited. Anytime they walk in there it’s such a great spot and we have such great fans. That obviously sparks them.”

About 10 days ago, James turned to social media to help him choose which number he’ll wear next season with the Cavaliers.

Harrison’s 4 Hits Lead Pirates Past Rockies 7-5

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Josh Harrison had four hits, including a tiebreaking homer, to help the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on Sunday.

Gregory Polanco and Travis Snider also went deep for the Pirates, who avoided being swept in Colorado for the second straight season.

Harrison homered on the first pitch of the eighth to break a tie, and Polanco followed with his fifth of the season to make it 7-5.

Tony Watson (7-1) gave up a run in two innings of relief to get the win and Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 19th save.

Harrison also had helped give the Pirates a 5-4 lead. In the sixth he swiped second but was caught in a rundown when he slid past the bag. He survived to reach third — giving him two stolen bases on the play — and scored on a pinch-hit double by Ike Davis to make it 5-4.

USA-BasketballLAS VEGAS (AP) — Atlanta Hawks forward Paul Millsap was added to Team USA’s roster for the training camp that opens Monday in Las Vegas.

Olympics Get Ready, Rugby Sevens is On the Way

rugby-sevensGLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — The road to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic debut of rugby sevens took a lively detour on the weekend to the home of Scottish football’s Rangers.

Played before nearly 200,000 spectators over two days, the Commonwealth Games sevens tournament in a packed Ibrox Stadium featured family-friendly crowds, karaoke-style sing-a-longs and appreciative players who rounded the ground following their final games to thank the crowd for their support.

On the field, it was all action — seven players covering a wide swath of field where 15 is the norm in regular rugby— speedy backs offloading or deking their way around opponents to score as many tries and points as they can in two seven-minute halves.

Disco rugby maybe, but in Glasgow on the weekend, it was a huge hit.

Tulowitzki’s Name Bungled in Giveaway Gaffe

DENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki has a tough name to spell, even at his own ballpark.

The Colorado Rockies handed out 15,000 jerseys with the All-Star shortstop’s name misspelled in a giveaway gaffe Saturday night at Coors Field.

The second “t” was missing, so the backs read “Tulowizki.”

The club issued a statement apologizing to fans for the mistake. The team said it was aware of the misspelling, but decided to hand out the jerseys because fans had come to the game against Pittsburgh specifically for the promotion.

The Rockies said fans can exchange them for corrected jerseys at a September date to be announced.

Tulowitzki leads the majors in hitting at .340. He is currently on the disabled list.

Butler, Royals Overcome Indians for 5th Win in a Row

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Billy Butler homered for the second straight game and the Kansas City Royals overcame a five-run deficit to beat Cleveland 7-5 Saturday night for their fifth straight win.

A day after his pinch-hit, two-run homer in the eighth inning beat Cleveland, Butler connected for a tiebreaking shot in the fifth. It was 5-all when he tagged Nick Hagadone for a drive over the Royals’ bullpen in left field.

Carlos Santana hit his third homer in two games for Cleveland, which has lost six of seven.

Jeremy Guthrie (6-9) won despite giving up five runs on 10 hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Greg Holland got his 27th save in 29 chances.

Zach McAllister (3-6) couldn’t hold a 5-0 lead. He gave up a single to Salvador Perez to start the fifth and was replaced by Hagadone.
