Baseball HOF Cuts Election Eligibility to 10 Years

national-baseball-hall-of-fCOOPERSTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — The Baseball Hall of Fame has reduced the number of years a player can remain eligible to be voted in by the writers to 10 years from 15, giving Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens less time to be considered.

The Hall of Fame announced the changes Saturday. They are effective immediately and will be reflected in 2015 Hall of Fame voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Bonds and Clemens, record-breaking stars whose careers have been tainted by allegations of performance-enhancing drug use, have been on the ballot the last two years.

The BBWAA will allow three players — Don Mattingly, Lee Smith and Alan Trammell — who have been on the ballot between 10-15 years to complete a 15-year stay.

FIFA Rejects Calls to Strip Russia of World Cup

FIFAZURICH (AP) — FIFA has rejected calls to move the 2018 World Cup from Russia, saying the tournament “can achieve positive change.”

Russia’s alleged involvement in shooting down a Malaysia Airlines plane over Ukraine last week prompted calls from some lawmakers in Germany to review the country’s hosting rights.

FIFA says it supports “any peaceful and democratic debate” and “deplores any form of violence.”

The governing body also says “boycotting sport events or a policy of isolation or confrontation” doesn’t work.

FIFA, which has Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko on its executive committee, says a World Cup in the country “can be a force for good.”

FIFA President Sepp Blatter already rejected calls in March to strip Russia of the tournament after it annexed the Crimea.

Brooks will join former NFL player and coach Ted Cottrell as the appeals officers.

Minor League GM Gets Public Prostate Exam

odd-newsMYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — A minor league baseball manager in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has done his part to spread prostate cancer awareness — he had a prostate cancer exam before a field packed with baseball fans.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans’ general manager Andy Milovich stuck his head out of the press box to sing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” during the 7th inning stretch while a doctor below and out-of-sight performed the screening.

Milovich agreed to have the exam in support of a 10-year-old girl suffering from brain cancer if her Facebook page got 10,000 “likes.” That number was reached Monday.

The team has held several events to help raise funds for the girl.

Aoki’s 14th Inning Hit Lifts Royals Over Indians

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nori Aoki singled home Lorenzo Cain in the 14th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over Cleveland after Indians starter Corey Kluber carried a perfect game into the seventh inning on Thursday night.

Cain opened the 14th with an infield single and stole second before Aoki delivered the winning hit off John Axford on a full-count pitch with one out.

Aaron Crow (5-1), the seventh Kansas City pitcher, earned the victory — striking out the side in a perfect 14th.

Left-hander Marc Rzepcynski (0-3), who gave up the hit to Cain, took the loss.

Kluber held the Royals to two hits, retiring the first 19 batters he faced before Omar Infante, who was in a 0-for-16 skid, lined a single to center with one out in the seventh.

Manning Getting Used to New Faces on Broncos

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Though his physical condition is no longer a big question mark for Peyton Manning, when he looks around at training camp, he must feel like he’s starting over again.

Manning lined up for his first snaps Thursday behind an offensive line that has been shuffled, in front of a running back who took only 25 percent of the snaps last year and looking down the line at some pass catchers who were either bit players or playing somewhere else last season.

The quarterback who thrived on the familiarity of playing with the same receivers, same tight end and same running backs year after year in Indianapolis, is now having to adjust to a revamped offensive roster to start his third year in Denver.

Pack Prez Hopes Favre Returns for Game This Year

green-bay-packersGREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers painted a rosy forecast to shareholders of the future of the NFL’s only publicly-owned franchise.

The team remains a strong contender, while the franchise appears in strong financial health. The wait for season tickets remains long.

Players report for training camp Friday. Preseason is usually when talk resurfaces about a potential return for retired quarterback Brett Favre, and the topic came up again Thursday with reporters after team president Mark Murphy spoke to the roughly 14,700 in attendance at the shareholders meeting at Lambeau Field.

Murphy said he is hopeful that Favre can return for a game this year, though not to retire his No. 4 jersey just yet.

Murphy also said Green Bay could be playing a game in London in the next few years.
