Chargers, Woodhead Agree to 2-Year Extension

NFL: San Diego Chargers-Training CampSAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers agreed to a two-year contract extension with running back Danny Woodhead.

Woodhead signed a two-year contract when he joined the Chargers as an unrestricted free agent from New England in March 2013. His new contract runs through the 2016 season.

“Danny is an integral part of our offense,” general manager Tom Telesco said. “His work ethic and on-field production were key elements last year. We look forward to having him be a part of the Chargers organization into the future.”

Woodhead is coming off a career year. He had career highs of 76 catches (second on the team), 605 yards and six touchdowns. He ranked first among all running backs in touchdown catches and ranked second in receptions and yards receiving.

Paterno Son, Other Former Assistant Sue Penn State

PaternoSTATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Jay Paterno and another former assistant football coach at Penn State are suing the university over how they were dismissed from the staff when Bill O’Brien was hired as head coach two years ago.

Paterno and William Kenney filed a lawsuit Monday in Philadelphia federal court that seeks more than $1 million.

Both served under Paterno’s father, Joe Paterno, before he was fired soon after retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was charged with child molestation in late 2011.

The coaches say they’ve been unfairly linked to the Sandusky scandal, making it difficult to find comparable coaching jobs.

Kenney is now an assistant at Western Michigan. Paterno is a writer and consultant.

A Penn State spokeswoman says it’s common for head coaches to pick their own assistants but isn’t offering more comment.

7 Ex-NFL Players Appeal Terms of Concussion Deal

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Seven former professional football players are challenging a tentative class action settlement of NFL concussion claims.

Their appeal echoes their previous complaints some players won’t be fairly compensated under the settlement, which would cover nearly 20,000 retired players for 65 years.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody has granted preliminary approval pending a November fairness hearing. Her approval came after the NFL agreed to remove the $765 million cap to ensure the fund doesn’t run out.

The group appealing the judge’s decision includes 2008 Pro Bowl player Sean Morey, now Princeton University’s sprint football coach.

Lawyers who negotiated the deal say Monday’s appeal to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court is premature. They say they fear it will delay final approval and leave families in need waiting longer for their awards.

Wayne State Softball Coach Heads to South Dakota

wayne-state-collegeWAYNE, Neb. (AP) — The head softball coach at Wayne State College is leaving to take a job at South Dakota State University.

Wayne State Director of Athletics Mike Powicki says Krista Wood built a successful program at Wayne State and “is very deserving of her new position” at the Division I level.

Wood spent eight seasons at Wayne State and became the school’s all-time winningest coach posting a 270-154 overall record and a 133-60 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Inheriting a program that was losing more than winning, she turned in eight straight winning seasons, a school record, and delivered three NCAA Tournament appearances, Super Regional berth and an NSIC Tournament title.

Powicki says a search for the next head softball coach begins immediately.

Thumb Surgery Set for Creighton’s Austin Chatman

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Creighton point guard Austin Chatman will have surgery to repair a ligament in his right thumb and is expected to be fully recovered before the season.

The school said Tuesday that Chatman would wear a cast for two months.

Chatman is the only returning starter for a team that has made the NCAA tournament three straight years. Chatman has started 71 straight games and averaged 8.1 points as a junior. He’s the Bluejays’ top returning scorer.

Chatman scored 10 or more points in six of the last seven games and was named to the Big East all-tournament team.

LSU Freshman Tackle Injured Punching Glass

lsuBATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU freshman defensive tackle Trey Lealaimatafao might not be able to play this season after he injured his arm punching through glass in the Tigers’ weight room.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette says Lealaimatafao was hospitalized Monday to treat a deep cut to his arm. School officials have not offered further details on why the player punched through glass, the severity of the injury or the effect it could have on Lealaimatafao’s career.

The 6-foot, 300-pound Lealaimatafao was a coveted recruit who was expected to compete for playing time immediately.

As a senior at San Antonio’s Warren High School, he was credited with 53 tackles, seven sacks, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was honored as a U.S. Army All-American.

Tour de France Heads to Pyrenees in Stage 16

tour-de-franceCARCASSONNE, France (AP) — Vincenzo Nibali is in the yellow jersey as the Tour de France peloton set off on the longest stage, into the Pyrenees.

The Italian holds a lead of more than 4½ minutes over second-place Alejandro Valverde of Spain.

The 237.5-kilometer (147-mile) Stage 16 from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon features an ascent up the super-tough Port de Bales.

Valverde won a stage in the 2012 Tour that had a similar climb over the Port de Bales and a finish downhill.

Before the stage, the Lampre-Merida team said world champion Rui Costa would not start due to pneumonia. The Portuguese rider had been in 13th place, about 13 minutes behind Nibali.

Desmond had four singles — including one off the arm of reliever LaTroy Hawkins in the ninth — to go with his 17th homer of the season.

Franklin Morales (5-5) surrendered four runs — three earned — in six innings.

Ben Paulsen had two hits and drove in a run in his major league debut for the Rockies, who’ve lost six straight.
