Aaron Hernandez Protests Airing of Court Chats

aaron-hernandezBOSTON (AP) — Lawyers for former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez are protesting the broadcasting of chats Hernandez had with his defense team during courtroom hearings.

Attorney James Sultan filed a motion Monday in Bristol Superior Court, where Hernandez is charged in the 2013 killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd.

Sultan said that during two hearings this month, a private conversation between Hernandez and his lawyers, and a separate conversation between Hernandez’s lawyers, were broadcast live over the Internet. The motion doesn’t describe the contents of the conversations.

Sultan said the broadcast of the conversations violates rules the state’s highest court has established for electronic recording of court proceedings.

Sultan asks the court to “take prompt action” to prevent the broadcasting of private conversations between Hernandez and his lawyers.

SD Woman Recognized for Role in Baseball History

baseball_bat_mitt_gloveYANKTON, S.D. (AP) — A woman recognized as baseball’s first female professional umpire has been inducted into the Yankton College Alumni Hall of Fame.

Amanda Clement was only 16 when she was paid to umpire a semipro game in Hawarden, Iowa, in 1904 when the hired umpire didn’t show up. She did well enough that she was offered work in future games.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum says Clement drew large crowds to games throughout the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska.

Clement was inducted into the Yankton College Alumni Hall of Fame on Saturday. She previously was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library maintains a file on her.

Clippers’ Future on the Line as Probate Trial Resumes

Chris-Paul-Clippers-Los-AngLOS ANGELES (AP) — The probate trial on the future of the Los Angeles Clippers is resuming Monday.

The trial is dealing with whether a deal negotiated by Donald Sterling’s estranged wife to sell the team for $2 billion is authorized under a Sterling family trust.

Sterling agreed to the sale but then tried to revoke consent in spite of a signed letter instructing his wife Shelly Sterling to sell for the highest price she could get.

The court action to resolve the matter has been under way since last month but was in recess for a week.

With three days of hearings ahead, Donald Sterling’s lawyers suggested they would call the battling couple back to the witness stand separately to address unanswered questions.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Major league batting leader Troy Tulowitzki was out of the Colorado Rockies’ lineup against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, a day after hurting a leg.

The Rockies shortstop had a cramp in the tensor fascia latae of his left thigh while running out an infield grounder Saturday night. He is day to day.

Tulowitzki is batting .340 with a major league-best .434 on-base percentage.

With the score 3-all, Matt Belisle (2-6) relieved and Josh Harrison worked out a seven-pitch walk leading off the seventh. Harrison stole second and scored on a single by McCutchen, who then was caught stealing second. Walker followed with his 14th homer.

Jameis Winston: ‘I Learned from My Mistakes’

jameis-winstonGREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Jameis Winston would rather look to the season ahead as the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for reigning national champion Florida State. He also knows he has to answer questions about his off-field conduct.

The sophomore said he understands “what it is to be a leader” and he’s working to “hold myself to that standard.”

Winston was investigated for sexual assault during last season. A prosecutor in Tallahassee, Florida, decided in December not to charge him due to a lack of evidence and gaps in the accuser’s story.

Then in April, he was cited for walking out of a supermarket without paying for crab legs and crawfish.

Winston says he has “learned from my mistakes” and is focusing on the season.

ACC Head Confident Autonomy Proposal Will Pass

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsGREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner John Swofford says he’s confident the NCAA will pass a proposal that will allow the five power conferences to make some of their own rules.

Speaking Sunday on the first day of his league’s two-day media event, Swofford said he “will be surprised if it doesn’t pass.”

He says it “largely gives the power five conferences what we have been asking for” and will keep those schools “under what we call the big tent of the NCAA.”

Under the proposal, the five power conferences — the ACC, Southeastern Conference, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 — would have autonomy to make their own bylaws.

The NCAA’s board of directors will vote Aug. 7.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive made similar comments last week about the proposal.

obama-fundraiserWASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is announcing new commitments for his initiative aimed at helping boys and young men of color, called “My Brother’s Keeper.”

The commitments include an effort by the NBA to recruit 25,000 new mentors and work with at-risk students to increase attendance and performance. AT&T is also announcing an $18 million commitment to support mentoring and other education programs.

The Emerson Collective is committing $50 million to collaborate with school districts and educators to launch a competition to find and develop the best designs for next generation high schools. The Emerson Collective was founded by Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, along with partners from Silicon Valley.

Obama will announce the commitments Monday during a town hall at an education center in Washington.
