Lincoln County Raceway Results – July 12

lincoln-county-raceway-resultsIn the heat of the night, the IMCA racing action was simmering hot at Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte, Nebraska on Saturday evening. Picking up a pair of feature victories in the Stock Car division was Casey Werkmeister as he was joined in the winners circle by Zach Schultz, Kyle Bond and Charlie Blowers.

On top of his game, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood (NE) swept the top honors in the IMCA Stock Car features, as two were ran on this evening. Werkmeister garnered the lead in the initial feature near the halfway point and never looked back. In the night’s finale, Werkmeister droved to the lead on lap 10 from his fifth row starting position to claim the checkered flag. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood and Casey Woken of Ogallala took home runner-up accolades in the twin features for the Stock Cars. Earning podium finishes in third place were Kyle Clough of Wallace and Gothenburg’s Jeff Whiting. Heat races were triumphed by Mikey Dancer of North Platte and David Easterday of Riverdale.

Blitzing the field to lead from the drop of the green flag until the double checkered flags were waved was North Platte’s Zach Schultz to win the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature. Schultz started on the pole and darted to the lead and never looked back. Driving from his third row starting position to finish second overall was Dalten Collins of North Platte. Collins displayed great consistency over the final laps to earn the podium finish. Coming from deep in the field, Henry Henderson of Sutherland had his work cut out for him, but he was up to the task to earn the third place accolades. Henderson started in the fifth row of the feature lineup at the drop of the green flag. Topping the heat race action in the Northern Sport Modified division were Terry Dressel of North Platte and Curtis hotshoe Bryan Herrick.

Finding the right groove on the high side in the late laps powered Gibbon Gambler Kyle Bond to the winners circle in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Bond snared the lead on the sixth lap and drove his way to yet another Feature victory. The early leader in the feature was Tyson Canas of Cozad who relinquished the lead to Bond on the sixth circuit. Canas stayed up on the wheel and earned a runner-up finish. Doing his best to make a strong push during the second half of the season, Brady Weinman of Arnold finished third overall in the featured event. Heat race winner, Benkelman Bullet Austin Davis recovered quite nicely to finish fourth after being caught in the Jacob Olmstead rollover near the halfway point of the feature. Olmstead also held point throughout a heat race as well.

Leading the final two laps, Charlie Blowers of Arnold piloted the Mopar Magic hotrod to an IMCA Sport Compact Feature victory. Blowers started in the second row and was able to avoid incidents throughout the feature to make the move for the lead on the eighth lap. Veteran wheelman Andrew Baumgardner of North Platte did his best to show great consistency and his efforts were rewarded with a runner-up finish. Cozad hotshoe Devin Bjorklund finished the podium slots in the division in his Dodge Neon. Heat race action was won by Baumgardner.

Correia Solid as Twins Rock Rockies 9-3

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Kevin Correia pitched six innings of one-run ball, Eduardo Escobar homered, and the Minnesota Twins pulled away late to beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Saturday.

He walked one and struck out one in snapping a hard-luck three-game losing streak during which he had received no run support.

The Twins were shut out in the last two losses for Correia, who helped the Twins offense with a run-scoring double for his first hit of the season and first RBI in three years.

Tyler Matzek (1-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in six innings.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners Open Entire State to Teal Hunting

Teal Ducks HuntingLINCOLN – All of Nebraska will be open for teal hunting in 2014. The Nebraska Game and Parks Board of Commissioners adopted changes to teal and youth waterfowl hunting seasons at their meeting July 11 at Niobrara State Park (SP).

The commissioners created new zone boundaries. The High Plains Zone encompasses the western half of the state and the Low Plains Zone the eastern half. Previously, teal hunting was generally restricted to the southern half of the state.

The 2014 season dates for teal hunting are Sept. 6-21 in the Low Plains Zone andSept. 6-14 in the High Plains Zone.

Commissioners also set the youth waterfowl season in each of four zones for theSaturday and Sunday immediately preceding the start of the regular duck and merganser season.

The season dates for the regular duck and merganser season, as well as other waterfowl, will be determined at the commissioners’ Aug. 29 meeting in Grand Island.

In other business, the commissioners:

– Set new prices for several nonresident permits: deer, $214; statewide buck only deer, $535; season choice antlerless only deer, $60; special antlerless only deer, $60; landowner deer, $107; turkey, $95; and landowner turkey, $47.50. The corresponding resident permit prices will remain the same.

– Added language for the eligibility of fall youth turkey hunters to match the requirements for spring youth turkey hunters. Youth must be age 15 and under, except youth age 16 may hunt on youth fall turkey permits provided they are age 15 both when they apply and on the opening day of the season.

– Passed a regulation to ban the possession or use of explosive or incendiary targets while target shooting on wildlife management areas.

The lottery drawings for the two Super Tag multi-species permits also were held at the meeting. Kay Wagner of Petersburg, Neb., won the single-entry Super Tag permit while Jennifer Simons of Atlantic, Iowa, won the multiple-entry Super Tag permit. On July 9, Game and Parks electronically drew the winners of the Combo multi-species permits. Bryce Hanson of Lincoln won the resident permit and Christie Berg of Logan, Kan., won the nonresident Combo permits.

The Super Tag and Combo permits are valid in 2014 and 2015. The Super Tag bag limit is one elk, one antelope, one deer and two turkeys. The Combo bag limit is one antelope, one deer and two turkeys. The permits are valid in open seasons with appropriate weapons.

Rockies Activate Gonzalez from Disabled List

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing 35 games because of left index finger inflammation.

To make room for Gonzalez, who was in the starting lineup for Friday night’s interleague game against Minnesota, the Rockies optioned right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens to their Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.

Gonzalez has been sidelined since June 3 and underwent surgery on the finger a week later after doctors discovered a benign tumor. Before rejoining the Rockies, Gonzalez made four rehab appearances with Colorado Springs earlier this week.

Jurrjens was 0-1 with a 10.61 ERA in two starts for the Rockies.
