Knights six-game win streak comes to an end at Western Nebraska

NPCC Knights LogoScottsbluff –The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team were defeated at the Cougar Palace by the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars 93-91 in a crucial Region IX South Sub-region matchup on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights, who were in sixth place in the South Sub-Region, were hoping to improve their standings and work on their bid for a place in the top four of the sub-region to be able to host a first round game in the Region IX tournament.

Things started out well for the Knights, jumping out to a 7-0 lead and leading by 10 in the first half at 26-16. The Cougars cut the Knights lead to four at 47-43 at the end of the half.

In the second half, with the score being tied at 58-58, the Cougars went on a 14-3 run to take a 72-61 lead for their biggest lead. The Knights whittled away at the Cougars lead and trailed by one at 92-91 with less than a minute to play. After the Cougar’s Jeremy Ruffin went 1-2 at the free throw line, the
Knights missed a last second shot to give the win to the Cougars.

The Cougars, who are 18-9 on the season and 9-4 in the South Sub-Region is a half game behind Laramie County, who leads the South Sub-Region were led in scoring by Djordje Dimitrijevic with 30 points. Trent Harris finished with 14 points, Marlon Sierra added 13 points. RJ Palmer had 12 points and Michael
Connor chipped in 10 points. Vinnie Shahid had six rebounds to lead the Cougars in rebounding.

The Knights drop to 17-6 on the season and 6-6 in the sub-region were led in scoring by Samuel Kearns and Victor Lewis, who finished with 19 points each. Mike Amius was next at 18 points. Godfrey Rolle had 14 points. Amius had seven rebounds to lead the Knights.

The Knights will next travel to Cheyenne, Wyo., to play Laramie County on Wednesday, Feb 15. Tip-off is at 8 pm CST.

Knights softball opens season with doubleheader sweep of Northeast

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights softball swept the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks at the Dowhower Softball Complex 7-5 and 13-7 on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, the Lady Hawks jumped out to a lead in the second inning after a solo home run by Alyson Romey to make the score 1-0. The Lady Hawks added three runs in their half of the third.

The Knights got on the board after Dani Stover tripled and was batted in by Sarah Beaton on a sacrifice fly.

The Knights rallied in the sixth inning. Ana Talaroc-Kaniho had a three-run double to tie the score at five. Two batters later, Shelby Belloni hit a two-run home run to give the Knights a 7-5 lead. Samantha Foster pitched a perfect seventh inning to secure the win for the Knights, including two strikeouts.

Foster pitched a complete game, striking out five Lady Hawks to get the win in game one.

Teanne Edens got the loss for the Lady Hawks, pitching five and one-third innings. Edens struck out 10 Knights.

In the second game once again, the Lady Hawks took the early lead. The first batter Savannah Robertson had a lead-off home run. The Lady Hawks scored two more runs in the first inning.

The Knights rallied scoring one run in the first and six runs in the second to take a 7-4 lead after two.

After the Lady Hawks scored another run in the third, the Knights broke the game open in the third inning by scoring six runs. Erin Renwick hit a three- run home run for the last three runs in the third to make the score 13-5. The Lady Hawks scored a run in the fourth and fifth.

Renwick pitched a seven inning complete game. She struck out one batter, the final batter in the game to get the win.

The Knights are 2-0 on the season and the Lady Hawks drop to 1-3 in the early season.

Knights head west for pair of pivotal Region IX games

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team will travel this weekend to play a couple of Region IX South Sub-Region games.

On Friday, February 10, the Knights will travel to Torrington, Wyo., to play the Eastern Wyoming Lancers.

The Lancers are 4-21 on the season and 0-11 in South Sub-Region play.

The Knights defeated the Lancers 99-58 on Jan 7 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Lancers have five players scoring in double figures led by Ahmad Pratt. In nine games Pratt has been averaging 18.6 points per game. Grant Olsson is second at 18.2 ppg in 20 games. Petar Skoknic and Jordan Mirich are next at 15.5 ppg each, Walker Korell is the fifth Lancer at 10.4 ppg. Pratt also leads the Lancers in rebounding at 5.7 rebounds per game.

On Saturday, Feb 11, the Knights will play the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars in Scottsbluff.
The Cougars are 16-9 overall and 7-4 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. They are tied with two other teams at 7-4 in Region IX.

The Knights defeated the Cougars in North Platte on Jan 6 69-67.

The Cougars have two players averaging in double figures. Vinnie Shahid is averaging 14.7 ppg and Djordje Dimitrijevic is at 12.7 ppg. Jeremy Ruffin is leading the Cougars in rebounding at 6.4 rpg.

The Knights are 16-5 overall and 5-5 in the South Sub-Region. They are currently in sixth place in the region. Diontae Champion leads the Knights in scoring at 16.7 ppg. Samuel Kearns is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 ppg, followed by Godfrey Rolle at 11.8. Mike Amius is the fourth Knight to average in double figures at 11.7 ppg, followed by Victor Lewis at 10.6 ppg. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at six rebounds per game.

Both games are crucial games for the Knights in the Region IX South Sub-Region standings. Laramie County is leading the sub-region at 7-3. Lamar, Trinidad State, and Western Nebraska are all at 7-4, followed by Otero at 7-5. The Knights are in sixth at 5-5 followed by Northeastern at 6-6 and McCook at 3-7. Eastern Wyoming is last at 0-11.

The top four teams will host a first-round game in the Region IX tournament. The winners of those four game will travel to the winner of the North Sub-Region for a chance to advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

NPCC Lady Knights travel to Eastern Wyoming

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team will travel to Torrington, Wyo., to play the Eastern Wyoming Lady Lancers on Friday, Feb 10.

The Lady Lancers defeated the Lady Knights in North Platte on Jan 7, 69-54. The Lady Knights trail in the all-time series between the two colleges at 15-24. Since Eastern Wyoming renewed their basketball team in 2007-08, the Lady Lancers hold a 10-8 advantage over the Lady Knights.

The Lady Lancers are 15-10 on the season and are led in scoring by Anna Perez Gomez at 15.7 points per game. Emily Evans is next at 14.9 ppg and Sarah Bersang is averaging 11.9 ppg. Pamela Bethel leads the Lady Lancers in rebounding at seven rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights, 7-15 on the season, are led in scoring by Thomesha Wilson at 13.5 ppg, followed by Jessica Lovitt at 10.3 ppg. Wilson is averaging 8.2 rpg to lead the Lady Knights in rebounding.

Lady Knight Head Coach Richard Thurin said, “Eastern Wyoming likes to drive the basket and penetrate the lane. They got some three-point shooters, so we need to guard against both things.”

HIGHLIGHTS: Knights win 5th straight, defeat Northwest Tech 79-72

NPCC Knights on ESPNGoodland, Kan – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks on Tuesday night 79-72.

At the start of the game there were four lead changes and two ties. The Mavericks were holding a 13-4 lead. This was the last lead for the Mavericks through the rest of the game. The Knights went on a 22-8 run to take their biggest lead in the first half at 26-21. The Knights held on to their lead at halftime at 35-33.

After the Mavericks tied the score at 39-39, the Knights went on a 7-0 run to take a 46-39 lead. The Knights never trailed again. The Mavericks were able to cut the Knights lead to two at 60-58. The Knights went on a 9-0 run to lead by 11, their biggest lead of the game at 69-58. The Mavericks continued to rally, but it was not enough as the Knights were able to hold on for the victory.

Eddie Reese scored 28 points to lead the now 11-14 Mavericks. Two other Mavericks reached the double digit mark in scoring. Tim Graham had 17 points and Tim Van Ryle finished with 16 points. Graham added 10 rebounds to have a double-double.

Diontae Champion led the 16-5 Knights with 22 points. Samuel Kearns was close behind with 20 points and Nate Duda finished with 18 points. Duda also had six rebounds to lead the Knights.

The Knights are next in action when they travel to Torrington, Wyo., to play Eastern Wyoming College on Friday Feb 10. Tip-off is at 8:30 pm CST.

Lady Knights fall to fast paced Northwest Tech 118-64

NPCC Knights on ESPNGoodland, Kan – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights were defeated by the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks 118-64 at the Max L. Jones Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The Lady Mavericks started the game using pressure defense and hot shooting jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first minute and a half of the game. In the first quarter, the Lady Mavericks shot 63.6 percent from the field including going six for seven from behind the three-point line. The Lady Mavericks forced 10 first quarter turnovers and held the Lady Knights to shooting 40 percent in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Mavericks led 39-20.

In the second quarter, the Lady Mavericks added to their lead in the second quarter outscoring the Lady Knights 20-14, giving them a 59-34 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, with the Lady Mavericks holding a 73-45 lead, the Lady Mavericks went on a 16-0 run to take a 89-45 lead. The Lady Knights scored the last two points of the third quarter, trailing 89-47 at end of third quarter.

In the game, the Lady Mavericks shot 54.4 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from behind the three-point line. The Lady Knights shot 36.1 percent from the field and went two for four from three-point range.

The Lady Mavericks, now 26-1 on the season were led in scoring by Tran Brown with 32 points. Brown made seven of 14 from behind the three-point line and seven of eight from the free throw line. Five other Lady Mavericks finished the night in double figures: KeKe Barber with 19 points, Emerald Hart had 14 points, Destiny Lindsey had 13 points, Zoi Thompson had 11 points and Juliet James had 10 points. James had a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Lady Knights are now 7-15 on the season. Thomesha Wilson led the Lady Knights with 16 points. Jessica Lovitt added 13 points and Mai’Zhrae Zeno finished with 12 points. Wilson had eight rebounds

The Lady Knights are next in action when they travel to Torrington, Wyo., to play Eastern Wyoming College on Friday Feb 10. Tip-off is at 6:30 pm CST.
