NPCC Lady Knights volleyball signs Carly Moss

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball announced the signing of Carly Moss from Loveland, Colo., to the 2017 recruiting class.

Moss, a 5’ 6” outside hitter played for Resurrection Christian School in Loveland, under Head Coach Caleb Howard.

She played varsity for two seasons. In 150 sets played, Moss had 88 kills. She also had 10 total blocks, 210 defensive digs, 36 service aces and had a 83.3 percent serving percentage.

“Carly has played volleyball at a high level. She is a very solid player that will add depth to our outside position.” Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said. ”We are excited to have her become a part of our team and to see what she can do here at NPCC.”

Moss is the sixth signing for the Lady Knights 2017 season. Carlie Wytulka from Nucla, Colo., Luisa Hernandez from Yuma, Colo., Shaylee Johnson from Fleming, Colo., Jordyn Simpson from North Platte, and Taylin McNair from Imperial are the other signees.

Dick Thurin to retire as Lady Knights Basketball Head Coach

North Platte – North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball coach Richard Thurin has announced his retirement, following the 2016-17 basketball season.

Coach Thurin has been coaching the Lady Knights since the 2001-02 season. Entering into the 2016-17 season, Thurin has a record of 206 wins and 236 losses.

Coach Thurin has led the Lady Knights to four Region IX Division II Championships and two NJCAA Division II National Tournament appearances in his career. The Lady Knights won the Region IX Division II Championship in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013. Coach Thurin has taken the Lady Knights to two NJCAA Division II National Tournaments by winning District F in 2011 and 2013.

Before coming to North Platte Community College Coach Thurin started the girls’ basketball program at Grant High School. Coach Thurin compiled a 304-100 career coaching record at Grant while winning 12 district titles and making 12 state tournament appearances including a state runner-up finish in 1985.

A search for his replacement will begin in the near future.

Knights and Lady Knights visit Northwest Tech Tuesday night on ESPN Radio 1410

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights will travel to Goodland, Kans., to play the Northwest Kansas Technical College Mavericks on Tuesday, Feb 7 at the Max Jones Fieldhouse.

The Lady Mavericks defeated the Lady Knights in November 92-71 in North Platte.

The Lady Mavericks are 25-1 on the season. Their only loss was to McCook Community College on November 26 90-72. They have won 14 games in a row.

Five Lady Mavericks are averaging in double figures led by Tran Brown with a 19.3 points per game average. A’nikeyawna Barber is second in scoring at 11.8 ppg, followed by Arion Jackson at 11.7 ppg. Zoi Thompson is fourth in scoring at 11.5 ppg and Juliet James is at 11.0 ppg. James is averaging a double-double with 12.5 rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights are 7-14 on the season. Thomesha Wilson leads the Lady Knights in scoring and rebounding with 13.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg. Jessica Lovitt is second on the Lady Knights in both categories at 10.2 ppg and 6.2 rpg.

The Lady Knights hold a 5-4 series lead between the schools.

On the men’s side, the Mavericks are 11-13 on the season and were defeated by the Knights back in November 87-74 at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Mavericks are led by Eddie Reese in scoring at 19.3 ppg. Osa Wilson is the only other Maverick averaging in double figures at 10.4 ppg. Toby Van Ry leads the Mavericks in rebounding at 7.0 rpg.

The Knights are 15-5 on the season. Sophomore Diontae Champion leads the Knights in scoring at 16.5 ppg. Four other Knights are averaging in double figures: Mike Amius is averaging 12.1 ppg, Godfrey Rolle is at 12.1 ppg, Samuel Kearns is averaging 11.7 ppg and Victor Lewis is at 11.1 ppg. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at 6.1 rpg.

Tip-off for the women’s game is at 5 pm CST with the men’s game to follow at 7 pm CST. The games will be broadcast on ESPN 1410 radio and on the Internet at www.northplattepost.com.

Knights hold off No. 17 Lamar 68-67

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team won a big Region IX South Sub-Region basketball game over the Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes, 68-67, Friday night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Coming into the game the Runnin’ Lopes were leading the South Sub-Region and ranked 17th in the country, while the Knights were in sixth place in the South Sub-Region.

In the first half, there were five lead changes. The last lead for the Runnin’ Lopes was at 8-9. The Knights took the lead at 10-9 on a putback by Buom Dubuol. After that the Knights went on a 9-0 run to gain their largest lead of the game at 19-9. The Runnin’ Lopes did tie the score at 29 just before the half, but the Knights took the lead for good at 31-29 on a basket by Samuel Kearns, which is the score it was at halftime.

In the second half, the Knights held a single digit lead throughout. Their biggest lead was eight points at 47-39. The Runnin’ Lopes cut into the lead of the Knights and trailed by one point with six seconds to go and the ball. After a miss by the Runnin’ Lopes the players were scrambling after the ball to get the rebound as time ran out.

The Runnin’ Lopes drop to 19-5 on the season and 6-4 in the South Sub-Region. Jerome LeNeir led the Runnin’ Lopes in scoring with 16 points including a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Devon Jacobs was the only other Runnin’ Lopes to reach double figures with 11 points. Andre Hardy added 12 rebounds to pace the Runnin’ Lopes.

The Knights are now 15-5 overall and 5-5 in the South Sub-Region. Kearns led the Knights in scoring with 17 points and Diontae Champion added 11 points. Mike Amius had 10 rebounds for the Knights. Kearns also had six assists on the night.

The Knights are next in action when they travel on Tuesday, February 7 to Goodland, Kan., to face the Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Lady Knights lose 13th straight to Northeast 92-52

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team were defeated by the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks 92-52 Friday evening at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The game started out close with the Lady Hawks holding a 23-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.

During the second quarter, the game remained close until with the score at 38-31 in favor of the Lady Hawks, Sam Caruth hit four three-pointers to help the Lady Hawks go on a 14-6 run to make the score 52-37 at the midway point.

The Lady Hawks held the Lady Knights to six third quarter points and scored 18 to open up the game at 70-43.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights could not get their offense going, scoring only nine points and allowed 22 points.

The Lady Hawks are 22-2 on the season. Five Lady Hawks scored in double figures led by Caruth with 22 points. Maddie Egr was next with 14 points. Aida Santana added 13 points. Maeva Katantou had 12 points and Iva Belosevic chipped in 10 points. Jerrica Neal had eight rebounds for the Lady Hawks.

The Lady Knights are 7-14 on the season. Two Lady Knights were in double figures. Jessica Lovitt had 18 points and Thomesha Wilson added 17 points. Wilson had six rebounds to lead the Lady Knights.

The Lady Knights are in action next when they travel to Goodland, Kans., to face the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks.

NPCC Knights host No. 17 Lamar at McDonald-Belton on Friday

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team will host the National Junior College Athletic Association 17th ranked Lamar Community College Lopes on Friday, Feb 3 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The game will be a Region IX South Sub-Region contest. The Knights are looking to avenge a 72-63 defeat in Lamar back on Dec 10.

The Lopes are 19-4 overall and 7-3 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Two Lopes are averaging in double figures led by Wayne Stewart at 18.7 points per game. The other Lopes’ player to average in double figures is Michael Skinner at 12.8 ppg. Isaiah Martin leads the Lopes in rebounding at nine rebounds per game.

In the previous game, Skinner scored 27 points and Stewart had 14 points. Taylor Shepard added 13 points.

The Knights are 14-5 overall and 4-5 in the South Sub-Region. They are on a three game winning streak. Diontae Champion is one of five Knights averaging in double figures. Champion is at 16.6 ppg. Mike Amius is second on the team at 12.4 ppg, followed closely by Godfrey Rolle at 12.3 ppg. Samuel Kearns is at 11.4 ppg and Victor Lewis is at 11.3 ppg. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at 5.8 rpg.

The current standings in the South Sub-Region shows Lamar leading the sub-region at 7-3, along with Laramie County. Western Nebraska is next at 6-3. Otero is 6-4, Trinidad State is 5-4. Northeastern is 6-5, followed by North Platte at 4-5. McCook is next at 2-6, with Eastern Wyoming at 0-9. The top eight teams will make the Region IX tournament with the top four hosting a first round game.

NPCC Lady Knights host 21-2 Northeast on Friday night

NPCC Knights LogoNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team will host the Northeast Community College Lady Hawks on Friday, Feb 3 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Lady Hawks are 21-2 and received votes in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division I Women’s Basketball rankings.

Maddie Egr is one of four Lady Hawks averaging double digits in scoring at 14 points per game. Mykala Baylor is second at 13.3 ppg. Cynthia Jorge at 11 ppg and Aida Santana at 10 ppg are the other two. Baylor leads the Lady Hawks in rebounding at 7.5 rebounds per game. Baylor scored 24 on the Lady Knights in a 91-41 win for the Lady Hawks on Jan 20 in Norfolk.

The Lady Knights are 7-13 on the season. Thomesha Wilson leads the Lady Knights in scoring at 13.2 ppg. Jessica Lovitt is next on the team at 9.5 ppg. Wilson also leads the Lady Knights in rebounding at 8.4 rebounds per game.
