California Chrome Made 3-5 Favorite for Belmont

California Chrome Kentucky DerbyNEW YORK (AP) — California Chrome is the 3-5 early favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and become horse racing’s 12th Triple Crown champion.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will break from the No. 2 post under Victor Espinoza on Saturday at Belmont Park. Eleven Belmont winners have come out of that post, the last being Tabasco Cat in 1994.

Wicked Strong was the 6-1 second choice and drew post No. 9 on Wednesday. The colt finished fourth after an unlucky trip in the Derby and sat out the Preakness.

Tonalist was made the third betting choice at 8-1 odds and will break from the No. 11 post.

Eleven horses were entered to take on California Chrome in his bid to win the Triple Crown for the first time since Affirmed swept the Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 1978.

Anderson Lifts D-backs to 4-2 Win over Rockies

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Nick Evans and Chris Owings hit back-to-back homers, rookie Chase Anderson won his fourth straight start and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the slumping Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Evans’ solo shot in the fourth was his first homer since Sept. 3, 2011, when he was with the New York Mets. Four pitches later, Owings hit another off Jorge De La Rosa (6-4). Owings also added an RBI double and finished a single shy of the cycle.

Anderson (4-0) didn’t overpower the Rockies so much as keep them guessing, throwing six effective innings in his longest outing since he was recalled from Triple-A Reno on May 6. He becomes the fifth rookie since 1998 to win his opening four starts.

Royals Outlast Cardinals 8-7

kc-royalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Eric Hosmer hit a tiebreaking single off closer Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 Tuesday night for their second straight road victory in the four-game, two-city series.

Rookie Kolten Wong’s first career home run was a grand slam in the second that ended the Cardinals’ 20-inning scoreless drought and gave them an early four-run cushion. The defending National League champions finished a dismal 2-7 homestand when their pitchers faltered.

Alex Gordon’s three-run homer capped a six-run fifth for the Royals against Jaime Garcia that put them up by two. Kansas City starter James Shields also scuffled, surrendering five earned runs in 5 1-3 innings.

Greg Holland worked the ninth for his 16th save in 17 chances. The intrastate rivalry now shifts to Kansas City, the home team for the last two games of the interleague series that resumes Wednesday.

Aqib Talib Gives Props to Peyton Manning

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Aqib Talib figures he’s upgraded quarterbacks by moving to Denver and he’s definitely traded up when it comes to the wide receivers he’s facing in offseason workouts.

Talib first weighed in on the Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady debate last week when he was a guest on the NFL Network, which chose him as one of the league’s top 100 players of 2013. He said that with all due respect to Brady, who will always be his friend, he’s now playing with the best quarterback in the business.

Manning said last week he hadn’t seen the segment, but he certainly returned the compliment, suggesting Talib — and therefore not Super Bowl champion cornerback Richard Sherman — “was probably the toughest corner that we played against last year.”

Marino Says He’s Withdrawing from Concussion Suit

nfl_logo2011-medMIAMI (AP) — Dan Marino says he is withdrawing as a plaintiff in a concussion lawsuit against the National Football League, and doesn’t suffer any effects from head injuries.

The Hall of Fame quarterback said that within the past year, he authorized a claim to be filed on his behalf in case he needed future medical coverage. Marino said he didn’t realize he would automatically be listed as a plaintiff, and he has decided not to be part of the lawsuit.

Marino, 52, was one of 15 former players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week. They joined more than 4,800 others who have alleged the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

California Chrome on Target for Belmont Stakes

California Chrome Kentucky DerbyNEW YORK (AP) — Art Sherman got his first glimpse of California Chrome in action in two weeks, and the trainer liked what he saw.

Sherman arrived in New York on Monday afternoon and watched his Triple Crown contender gallop at Belmont Park on Tuesday morning. It was the first time Sherman had observed the chestnut colt since he captured the Preakness.

Sherman says California Chrome is “an amazing horse.”

The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness winner will try for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 on Saturday in the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

MPCC Rodeo Club Becomes ‘Team’ – Will Now Offer Scholarships

MPCC-Rodeo-TeamThe Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Club officially became full-fledged college athletic team after a vote by the MPCC Board of Governors at their April meeting.

The MPCC Rodeo Team is the first athletic team at the college to be deemed an “Area” team rather than being campus specific. Most of the focus to date has been in North Platte, but there are immediate plans to expand the team to cover the McCook area more heavily than in year’s past.

“Because rodeo is primarily an individual sport, MPCC Rodeo Team members will be made up of cowboys and cowgirls from the college’s entire 18-county service area,” said MPCC rodeo team coach Dustin Elliott.

Elliott, who is himself a world-champion bull rider, is excited at the possibilities – especially the fact that scholarships will now be available to team members.

“College rodeo is no different than any other college athletic sport. There are student athletes competing and representing their school in pursuit of national titles,” he said. “So when the Board recognized that fact and approved scholarships, I couldn’t have been happier. I know that without scholarships it is very hard to recruit the talented athletes who are probably getting offers from other schools, and why shouldn’t they? Now we are capable of competing for the very best athletes to compete for us.”

According to Elliott, although the new “team” designation is equivalent to the rest of MPCC’s athletic teams, team members will still need to work on fundraising activities to supplement their travel costs.

“We will still be doing some fundraising, but the new designation will allow the athletes and the coaches the ability to focus more on competing than on trying to figure how we can afford to get to the next rodeo event,” Elliott said.

Their largest event, Elliott said, will be the second annual Rail Town USA College Rodeo 2014 set for Sept. 19-20 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte.

“Last year went off without any major problems and with the support of our sponsors, we’re expecting even better performances this year,” he said.

Elliott said he is extremely grateful for the support the team received from the community during the college’s inaugural rodeo in 2013.

“Obviously, we need to thank David Fudge and the Nebraskaland Days Board of Directors for their amazing support,” he said. “We also need to recognize Kenny Barringer for practice stock, Trey Wasserburger for help with practice, and all the sponsors who made 2013 Rodeo possible.”

Elliott, who became MPCC’s Rodeo Coach early in 2013, noted that even while still designated a “club” its members performed well this season.

“In my opinion, we had a great season during my first year at the helm. We had an athlete win the region and are sending him to Nationals – a first for MPCC Rodeo,” he said, adding, “We already have a strong foundation built for next year, with confirmed returning Rodeo Team members Tyler Viers, Dakota Rice, Axel Rasmussen, Matisyn Humphrey and Julie Timmerman. We’ve also received verbal commitments from several high school rodeo standouts, which will help make our team even stronger.”

Duffy, Royals Keep Cardinals Down 6-0

kc-royalsST. LOUIS (AP) — Danny Duffy worked six innings of one-hit ball and Alex Gordon homered to start a breakout three-run seventh for the Kansas City Royals in a 6-0 victory over the suddenly punchless St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

The Royals had just two singles off Shelby Miller (6-5) in a game that had been scoreless before they opened the seventh with four straight hits. Gordon’s fifth homer ended a 15-inning scoreless drought and Mike Moustakas capped the rally with a two-run double.

Matt Holliday had two singles and a walk for the Cardinals, who have been shut out in consecutive games and have single-digit hit totals the last four games.

Duffy (3-5) struck out five and walked one, rebounding from consecutive losses in which he surrendered 10 earned runs in 10 innings.

Dan Marino Files Concussion Lawsuit Against NFL

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino is among the latest group of football players to file a concussion-related lawsuit against the National Football League.

The 52-year-old former Miami Dolphins quarterback is one of 15 former players who filed a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia last week.

Marino and the other 14 plaintiffs join more than 4,800 others who have alleged the NFL misled players about the long-term dangers of concussions. The NFL has denied those claims.

The lawsuit doesn’t specify any medical problems suffered by the plaintiffs including Marino, who retired in 1999. It seeks unspecified damages and medical monitoring.

The NFL and the original group of players agreed on a $765 million settlement last August. But the settlement was rejected by a federal judge in January.

Lineman Returns to His Love: the Football Field

Derek-Wolfe-Denver-Broncos-ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The seizure, the weight loss, the false-start of a comeback. Derek Wolfe endured them all while always keeping one goal in mind: Getting back on the football field.

That the Broncos defensive lineman kept football on the front burner through the difficult times is a testament to the third-year veteran’s love of the game. This was not, by any means, your typical football injury.

Wolfe suffered a seizure during the bus ride to the airport for Denver’s flight to Kansas City last Nov. 29. He ended up in the hospital for several days, and was put in a medically induced coma while doctors performed procedures to rule out a brain tumor.
