Rockies Place Rutledge on DL, Recall Wheeler

Josh Rutledge Colorado RockiesDENVER (AP) — Colorado Rockies infielder Josh Rutledge has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a viral infection.

To fill his roster spot, the Rockies recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Friday.

Rutledge began the season with Colorado Springs before he was called up April 9. He has hit .318 in 11 games with the Rockies this season.

Wheeler was batting .247 with three home runs and nine RBIs in 24 games with Colorado Springs.

Meanwhile, manager Walt Weiss said right-hander Jhoulys Chacin will return from the disabled list to start Sunday against the New York Mets. Chacin has been on the DL since March 28, retroactive to March 21, with a right shoulder strain.

Weiss said Chacin was declared ready after coming out of a bullpen session Thursday with no problems.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals placed left-hander Bruce Chen on the disabled list Friday with a bulging disk in his back and recalled right-hander Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Omaha.

Chen was supposed to start Saturday against Detroit, but he struggled with the pain in a side session on Thursday, even after receiving an epidural that was supposed to alleviate it.

Afterward, Royals manager Ned Yost acknowledged that a DL stint was likely.

Left-hander Danny Duffy will slide from the bullpen into Chen’s spot in the rotation.

Brooks, who was 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA at Omaha, provides some bullpen depth. He spent five days with the Royals in early April but did not appear in a game.

Kentucky Derby Field Reduced to 19 Starters

Kentucky-Derby-Churchill-DoLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Derby field has been reduced to 19 horses after the owners of Pablo Del Monte decided to pass on the race.

Trainer Wesley Ward said Friday the owners will wait to run in the Preakness on May 17. Ward bred and owns a 25 percent share of the colt.

Pablo Del Monte joined the field after Hoppertunity was scratched Thursday because of minor foot injury. Pablo Del Monte would have had to start from the far outside post in a field of 20. He was listed at 50-1 on the morning line and was to be ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez.

The No. 1 spot in the starting gate Saturday will be empty and the 19 horses will use posts 2 through 20.

Wrestling Powers End Meets after Lynching Photo

Wrestlers LynchingPAULSBORO, N.J. (AP) — Two New Jersey high school wrestling powers are stopping their matches against one another because of a photo in which members of one team simulated a lynching.

Paulsboro school superintendent Walter Quint tells The Philadelphia Inquirer (https://bit.ly/R7giHo ) that continuing meets against Phillipsburg High School would be “disrespectful to the people who are here that are hurt by” the photo.

The controversy erupted in February when the photo surfaced online of seven white Phillipsburg wrestlers, some with pointed hoods, posing with a black wrestling dummy hanging from a noose. The dummy is in a Paulsboro shirt.

The seven plus another team member were scratched from the state tournament after the photo became public. Prosecutors investigated but declined to file charges.

There have been several apologies.

The schools had scheduled meets annually since 1999.

Broncos Pick Up Von Miller’s Option for 2015

(AP) __ The Denver Broncos have exercised their 2015 option on pass-rusher Von Miller.

He now has two years remaining on his rookie deal. He’ll make $3.25 million this upcoming season and $9.754 million in 2015 if he’s on the Broncos roster next March.

Miller was the second overall pick in 2011, when teams were given the option of a fifth year for first-round picks as part of the transition to a rookie wage scale that was introduced with the current collective bargaining agreement that year.

Teams have until Saturday to exercise that option.

Miller was John Elway’s first draft pick and had 30 sacks his first two seasons, including a club record 18½ in 2012. But his 2013 season began with a six-game drug suspension, included several off-the-field distractions and ended with a torn ACL in December that sidelined him for the Super Bowl.

Rockies Beat Mets 7-4 Behind Nicasio’s Arm, Bat

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Carlos Gonzalez homered before leaving with a finger injury, Juan Nicasio pitched seven scoreless innings and drove in three runs, and the Colorado Rockies beat the New York Mets 7-4 on Thursday night.

Corey Dickerson had three hits, including an RBI triple and Nolan Arenado singled leading off the third to extend the majors’ longest active streak to 21 games. He’s tied for the fourth-longest hitting streak in Rockies team history.

Gonzalez connected for his sixth home run of the season in the first inning, driving a 3-2 offering from Bartolo Colon (bar-TOH’-loh koh-LOHN’) off the right-center field facing just below the second deck.

Nicasio got the win.

The Colorado Rockies say outfielder Carlos Gonzalez left Thursday night’s game against the New York Mets in the fourth inning because of a bruised left index finger.

Gonzalez homered in the first inning before being replaced by pinch-hitter Brandon Barnes.

The team characterized Gonzalez’ playing status as day to day.

Blue Jays Beat Royals 7-3 to Avoid Series Sweep

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mark Buehrle pitched into the seventh inning, Juan Francisco and Colby Rasmus each went deep and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 Thursday night to avoid a series sweep.

Francisco and Rasmus each drove in a pair of runs for Toronto, as did Anthony Gose, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to start in place of injured outfielder Melky Cabrera.

Buehrle (5-1) worked through plenty of trouble to last 6 2-3 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. It was a solid bounce-back performance after the left-hander was hammered for seven runs last Friday night against Boston.

Aaron Loup pitched 2 1-3 shutout innings for his third career save.

The Royals’ Jeremy Guthrie (2-2) left the game trailing 4-3 after six innings.

Royals Expected to put Lefty Chen on Disabled List

Bruce Chen Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals expect to place left-hander Bruce Chen on the disabled list with a swollen disc in his back that has already caused the club to juggle its starting rotation.

Chen was supposed to throw a side session Thursday, but manager Ned Yost said the 37-year-old left-hander was in pain even before he made it to the mound. Chen’s anticipated move to the DL means that Yost will have to find someone else to start in his place Saturday against Detroit.

Yost was still mulling his options before Thursday night’s series finale against Toronto, but he did acknowledge that left-hander Danny Duffy could move out of the bullpen.

Chen said he’s been dealing with back pain for weeks. He’s already had an epidural to relieve some of the swelling, but so far it has not made the pain subside.
