Hughes Picks Up Win as Twins Top Royals, 8-3

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Phil Hughes ended a personal losing streak that dated to last July, pitching into the seventh inning Sunday and helping the Twins top the Kansas City Royals 8-3 to avoid a three-game sweep.

Hughes (1-1), who signed a $24 million, three-year deal in December, allowed an RBI single to Omar Infante in the fifth and a two-run homer to Alcides Escobar in the seventh while winning for the first time in 17 appearances. He had lost eight games since that victory on July 2.

Josmil Pinto homered and Trevor Plouffe and Kurt Suzuki each drove in a pair of runs for the Twins, who battered Yordano Ventura (1-1) before piling on against the Royals’ bullpen.

The loss ended Kansas City’s five-game winning streak.

Lyles’ Pitching, Reversed Call Key Rockies’ Win

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Jordan Lyles pitched effectively into the eighth inning and Colorado was aided by a reversed call that produced its first run in the Rockies’ 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night.

Justin Morneau also drove in two runs the old fashioned way, connecting for his third home run of the season in the fourth after Carlos Gonzalez began the inning with a single.

Lyles allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings in winning his third straight, equaling a career best. LaTroy Hawkins pitched a hitless ninth for his fifth save in five chances.

Kyle Kendrick went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits in a solid outing but could not avoid a seventh straight loss, dating to Aug. 11.

Landeskog Leads Avs to 4-2 Win over Wild

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Gabriel Landeskog scored twice and Semyon Varlamov stopped 30 shots, lifting the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night and a 2-0 series lead.

The Wild were unable to contain the quickness of teenager Nathan MacKinnon, who had a goal and three assists. Stastny, the star of Game 1, also had a goal and three assists. His empty-netter sealed the win after Marco Scandella made it a one-goal game with 1:19 remaining.

Charlie Coyle also scored early for the Wild.

Game 3 is Monday in Minnesota.

Royals Bullpen Holds on for 5-4 Victory over Twins

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bruce Chen labored through five innings before the Kansas City Royals’ bullpen took over, shutting down the Minnesota Twins the rest of the way in a 5-4 victory Saturday.

The Royals have won five straight after getting swept last weekend in Minnesota.

Chen (1-1) allowed all four runs on eight hits and four walks, but the damage could have been worse. He twice walked the bases loaded, and his only clean inning was the first, when Brian Dozier hit a fly out that nearly left the park.

Still, a five-run fourth inning off Kevin Correia (1-1) staked Chen to a lead, and his bullpen made it stand up.

Danny Duffy tossed two scoreless innings, and Wade Davis navigated a perfect eighth before turning the game over to All-Star closer Greg Holland. He set down the top of the Minnesota lineup in order for his sixth save in as many chances.

Did Manning’s Meeting with Saban Cross the Line?

Peyton-ManningENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s never-ending quest to hone his game and Nick Saban’s desire to decipher fast-paced offenses led to a recent meeting that the Crimson Tide coach called mutually beneficial.

It also might have violated NFL rules because, according to Saban, Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase also was in attendance.

The league doesn’t allow players and their coaches to meet before the start of offseason workouts, which for the Broncos begin Monday. On-field instruction won’t start until mid-May.

The Associated Press left messages with the team and the NFL on Friday seeking comment.

Gase, one of the rising young stars in the NFL coaching ranks, and Saban go way back. Gase worked under Saban at Michigan State in the late 1990s and followed him to LSU as a graduate assistant in 2000.

Saban also has known Manning for a long time and is friends with his father, Archie.

The Broncos gather Monday for what’s called Phase One of the voluntary offseason workout program. During the first two weeks of the offseason program, activities are limited to strength and conditioning and rehabilitation before any on-field work and instruction are allowed.

Tulo Backs Chatwood and Rockies Beat Phillies 12-1

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run home run after No. 3 hitter Carlos Gonzalez was intentionally walked in front of him, Tyler Chatwood pitched seven strong innings for his first win of the season, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Philadelphia Phillies 12-1 Friday night.

Tulowitzki went 3 for 3 on the night, drove in five runs and drew a key walk during the Rockies’ four-run first inning. Drew Stubbs and Charlie Blackmon added three hits apiece. The 18 hits represented a season high for the Rockies and their run total matched a season high.

Chatwood (1-0), who missed the first two weeks of the season with a left hamstring strain, allowed one unearned run on two hits in his second start of the season and first at home.

Phillies starter Jonathan Pettibone (0-1) went four innings and allowed eight runs on nine hits.

TNT’s Sager to Miss NBA Playoffs Due to Leukemia

Craig SagerATLANTA (AP) — TNT analyst Craig Sager will miss the NBA playoffs as he undergoes treatment for leukemia.

A sideline reporter famous for his brightly colored suits, Sager’s sense of humor was intact in a statement released by Turner Sports on Friday.

Sager describes the postseason as “my favorite time of year – city to city, round by round, 40 games in 40 nights.” He says that “a dramatic turn has matched me with acute myeloid leukemia. From the sidelines to being sidelined, 40 veins and 40 electrolytes.”

Sager jokes about the often-terse in-game interviews with San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich: “Too bad, I had some probing questions for Pop.”

Johnson Rescues Avs with Big Save Against Wild

Colorado-Avalanche-LogoDENVER (AP) — Erik Johnson saved the night for the Colorado Avalanche with his quick feet and thinking.

The defenseman raced from the blue line to the goal line and swatted away a puck just three inches shy of sliding in for a game-sealing, empty-net goal by Minnesota late in regulation.

His stop during a 5-4 overtime win may have been overshadowed by the theatrics of Paul Stastny, who tied the game with 13.4 seconds left and then scored the OT winner.

But Johnson’s play certainly wasn’t lost on the Avalanche as they take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series into Game 2 on Saturday.

Stastny said: “If that doesn’t happen, that hustle out of E.J., we’re not here in this moment.”

Royals put Outfielder Dyson on Bereavement List

Jarrod Dyson Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals have placed outfielder Jarrod Dyson on the bereavement list and recalled versatile Jimmy Paredes from Triple-A Omaha.

The Royals were already thin in the outfield after placing Lorenzo Cain on the disabled list with a strained groined earlier in the week.

Kansas City made the moves before Friday night’s game against Minnesota.

Manager Ned Yost said he expects Dyson to return Monday in Cleveland.

Paredes was claimed off waivers from Baltimore in February, and was hitting .319 at Omaha. Yost views him as capable of playing second base, third base and any of the outfield spots.

In other injury news, Royals left-hander Bruce Chen said he’s ready to pitch against the Twins on Saturday. He had his regular turn pushed back from Thursday because of a sore back.
