North Platte – After a slow start, the North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Southeast Community College Storm 88-80 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Storm began the game jumping out to a 13-5 lead over the Knights. With the score at 17-9, in favor of the Storm, the Knights battled back going on a 13-0 run to take a 22-17 lead, capped off by eight straight points by Godfrey Rolle on two three-pointers and another field goal.

The Knights stretched out their lead to 11, 34-23 with just over four minutes to go in the half. The Storm came back with a 14-3 run of their own to tie the score at 37-37 at halftime.

In the beginning of the second half, the game remained tight at the two teams were tied at 51 points each.

The Knights started to open the game up by going on a 24-6 run for their biggest lead of 18 at 75-57.

The Storm began to chip away at the Knights lead and brought the score within five points at 81-76. The Storm had to resort to sending the Knights to the free throw line. The Knights made five free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The Knights are now 11-3 on the season and 1-0 in Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference play. They were led in scoring by Rolle, who finished with 24 points. Mike Amius was next in scoring with 16 points. Besides Rolle and Amius, two other Knights finished in double figures: Samuel Kearns finished with 15 points and David Niklasson finished with 10 points. Amius had seven rebounds and Rolle had six rebounds to lead the Knights.

The Storm are now 8-9 on the season and 0-2 in NCCAC play. Three Storm players finished in double figures including Bobby Parker, who led all scorers with 26 points. Taylor Britt had 15 points and Daniel Quesenberry added 10 points. Parker added seven rebounds to lead the Storm.

The Knights will be in action again on January 20, when they travel to La Junta, Colo., to play the defending Region IX South Sub-Region champion Otero Junior College. Tip-off is set for 8 pm CST.

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights lost their opening game of the Region IX Division II season, losing to the Southeast Community College Lady Storm 61-59 Saturday afternoon at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

Both teams started out slowly. The Lady Knights shot in the first quarter 23.8 percent from the field and the Lady Storm shot 38.5 percent, both teams making five field goals. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Storm held a 13-12 advantage.

The Lady Storm outscored the Lady Knights in the second quarter 18-9 to open the game up and take a 31-21 halftime lead.

During the third quarter, the Lady Knights got back into the game with the score being 28-38 the Lady Knights went on a 12-1 run to take the lead at the end of the third quarter at 40-39. Jessica Lovitt made a field goal at the third quarter buzzer to give the Lady Knights the lead.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights continued to build their lead by going on a 6-1 run to lead 46-40. The Lady Knights held their biggest lead at eight with a 53-45 lead. The Lady Storm outscored the Lady Knights 16-6 down the stretch including an 8-0 run to gain the win.

The Lady Storm improve their season record to 2-12 on the season and 1-0 in Region IX Division II play. Jayda Tiller led the Lady Storm in scoring with 14 points. Two other players scored in double figures for Southeast, Jay’la Brown finished with 11 points and Kaatia Watene added 10 points. Brown had 14 rebounds and Tiller had 11 rebounds to pace the Lady Storm.

Allison Tichy was the only Lady Knight to score in double figures with 17 points on six field goals, including two three-pointers and three free throws. Lovitt had 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Knights.

The Lady Knights, who are now 5-10 on the season and 0-1 in Region IX, are in action next when they travel to Seward to face the Concordia University Junior Varsity on Monday, January 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm CST.

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights and Lady Knights basketball teams will host the Southeast Community College Storm on Saturday, January 14, at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the South Campus of NPCC.

Both games will be Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference games.

The women’s game will be the first contest for both teams in Region IX Division II.

The Lady Storm is 1-12 overall and 0-1 in the NCCAC. Their only win was against Hesston College. The Lady Storm averages 59.6 points per game, while allowing 80.4 ppg for their opponents. Jay’la Brown leads the Lady Storm in scoring at 8.6 ppg and in rebounding at 6.6 rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights are 5-9 on the season. They average 63.9 ppg and allow 64.4 ppg. Thomesha Wilson leads the Lady Knights in scoring at 14.0 ppg and rebounding at 8.0 rpg.

The men’s game does not count in the Region IX standings.

The Storm are 8-8 overall and 0-1 in the NCCAC. The Storm score 82.9 ppg and defensively give up 77.6 ppg.

Bobby Parker leads the Storm in scoring at 15.1 ppg. Two other Storm players are averaging in double figures. Taylor Britt is averaging 11.5 ppg and Wesley Nosakhare is averaging 10.4 ppg. Parker and Jalen Wilkins-McCoy lead the Storm in rebounding at 5.5 rpg.

The Knights are 10-3 on the season and have not played an NCCAC game. The Knights are averaging 92.4 ppg and allow 69.8 ppg.

Diontae Champion leads the Knights in scoring at 18.5 ppg. Mike Amius is next on the team at 13.5 ppg. Amius also leads the Knights in rebounding at 6.2 rpg. Three other Knights are averaging in double figure scoring, Samuel Kearns at 11.5 ppg, Godfrey Rolle at 11.2 ppg, and Victor Lewis at 10.4 ppg.

The games will be broadcast on ESPN 1410 radio and on the Internet at www.northplattepost.com. They will also be livestreamed at www.npccknights.com.

Tip-off for the women’s game is at 2 pm CST, with the men’s game to follow at 4 pm CST.

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team were defeated by Region IX South Sub-Region opponent, the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles 92-85 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Knights started out the game by jumping out to a 8-0 lead. They stretched out their lead to 15 at 21-6. The Golden Eagles outscored the Knights the remainder of the half 29-18 to trail the Knights at halftime 39-35.

In the second half, the Knights built their lead back to nine at 51-42 with just over 16 minutes left to play.
The Golden Eagles guard Da’Zhon Wyche took over in the second half by scoring 26 of his game high 36 points. Wyche went four for six from behind the arch and a perfect six for six from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead at 52-51 on an old-fashioned three point play by Elijah Oliver. In the second half there were five lead changes. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good at 74-73 on one of the three-pointers by Wyche.

The Golden Eagles improve to 10-7 on the season and 4-1 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Besides Wyche’s 36 points, the Golden Eagles had two other players in double figures. Oliver finished the game with 23 points and Dominick Heinzl added 15 points. Heinzl also grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles.

Diontae Champion had a double-double for the Knights, who fall to 10-3 on the season and 2-3 in the South Sub-Region, with a team high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Three other Knights scored in double figures. Victor Lewis finished with 19 points, Samuel Kearns had 18 points, and Mike Amius had 10 points. Amius also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Knights are in action on Saturday, January 14, when they host Southeast Community College.

The game will be broadcast on the radio at ESPN 1410 and the Internet at www.northplattepost.com. It will also be live streamed at www.npccknights.com.
