Crawford’s 41 Points Leads Warriors over Nuggets

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Jordan Crawford scored a career-high 41 points and Harrison Barnes added 30 as a squad of Golden State backups beat the Denver Nuggets 116-112 Wednesday night.

Crawford beat his previous career high of 39 points set against Miami on March, 30, 2011, when he was with Washington. He surpassed it with a runner that put the Warriors ahead for good at 110-108.

Randy Foye, who led Denver with 32 points, raced downcourt in response but his finger-roll rimmed out and Golden State corralled the rebound.

With 30 seconds left, Barnes sank a free throw and Draymond Green swooped in to tip in his errant second shot, giving the Warriors a 113-108 lead.

Crawford and Steve Blake each missed a free throw over the next 14 seconds, giving the Nuggets an opening. Green was whistled for goal-tending on Foye’s 3-pointer with seven seconds left but the call was overturned upon review, leaving the Nuggets trailing 115-112.

Judge Again Rejects Deal in NFL Concussion Cases

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge in Philadelphia has again declined to approve deals for some of the retired players suing the NFL over concussions.

U.S. District Judge Anita Brody’s preliminary ruling Wednesday affects a batch of lawsuits involving lead plaintiff Kevin Turner, a former Philadelphia Eagle now battling Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Brody had issued a similar ruling in January in the lead case in the matter, which could ultimately cover up to 20,000 retired players.

The judge has asked lawyers for more details to support claims the proposed $765 million fund would last for 65 years. Young players with severe brain injuries would get up to $5 million under the deal, though most players would get far less.

Brody is expected to conduct hearings in the case later this year.

In the first game against the Hastings College JV Shannon Lieber gets the win giving up six hits, four earned runs and striking out three. Katharine Savolt had a walk off double in the bottom of seventh inning to win the game while going 3-4 with two doubles and 4 RBIs. Soliel Atenza was 2-4 with an RBI and Britlee Anderson was 3-4 with 2 RBIs and a homerun.

The second game against Hastings College JV went nine innings with Savolt earning the win on the mound giving up two hits and 1K, while Lieber got the save giving up four hits and 1 strikeout. Savolt again had a walk off double to win the game and a hit in the seventh inning to tie the game as she finished 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Siarra Velasquez was 2-4 with 2 doubles and 3 stolen bases. Sydney Standage was 2-2 with a RBI and two walks. Brittney Odum was 2-3.

“We played two solid games Friday,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “The girls really stepped up and were aggressive and disciplined at the plate when we needed to be and got two great wins both on walk off hits by Katharine Savolt.”

Yesterday in the first game against Iowa Western Shannon Lieber took the loss on the mound giving up six hits and one earned run. Sydney Standage was 1-3 with a double and an RBI. Soliel Atenza was 1-3 with a single and Brittney Odum got on base on an error and scored the lone run of the game for the Knights who left 3 runners on base.

“We just couldn’t string our hits together like we needed to in order to get the wins. In game two we had a few errors that cost us some runs but their pitchers did a very good job of keeping us off balance and not getting solid hits.”

The Knights games with Colby Community College scheduled for April 17 have been postponed. The Knights return to the diamond on April 21 when they travel to face the Hastings College JV. The Knights are next at home on April 24 with a doubleheader against McCook Community College at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Players Championship Changes to 3-Hole Playoff

PGA-LogoPONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The Players Championship is changing this year to a three-hole aggregate playoff involving the closing stretch at the TPC Sawgrass.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced the new format Wednesday.

The Players Championship previously was a sudden-death playoff that began on the par-3 17th hole, famous for having an island green. Starting this year, a playoff would take place on the par-5 16th hole, the 17th, and the par-4 18th. If players are still tied, it would go to sudden death starting on the 17th.

The Players Championship is May 8-11. It becomes the only regular PGA Tour event to use a playoff format that is not sudden death.

Clippers Beat Nuggets 117-105 for Record 57th Win

Denver_NuggetsLOS ANGELES (AP) — Blake Griffin scored 24 points while picking up his 16th technical, and the Los Angeles Clippers led all the way in beating the Denver Nuggets 117-105 on Tuesday night for their franchise-record 57th victory of the season.

Chris Paul had 21 points and 10 assists, and J.J. Redick added 18 points in the Clippers’ finale at home, where they went 34-7 for another franchise mark. DeAndre Jordan had 13 points and 16 rebounds.

The win kept the Clippers in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. They would need to win at Portland and Oklahoma City would need to lose to Detroit on Wednesday night for the Clippers to claim the second spot. Otherwise, they will remain the third seed.

Los Angeles will have to get by without Griffin on the road since his 16th tech triggered a league-mandated one-game suspension.
