HIGHLIGHTS: Lady Knights lose late lead, fall 55-51 against Laramie County

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team lost to the Laramie County Community College Lady Golden Eagles Wednesday night 55-51 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The first quarter saw three lead changes and two ties as the Lady Golden Eagles had a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Knights picked up their shooting in the second quarter by going 7 for 16 in the second quarter to jump out to a 26-20 halftime lead. Aljahnay Duncan led the second quarter by scoring eight of the Lady Knights 16 points.

In the third quarter, the Lady Knights scored the first four points to take their biggest lead of the game of 10 at 30-20. For the remainder of the quarter the Golden Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Knights 14-7 to cut the Lady Knights lead to three, 37-34, at the end of the third quarter.

The Lady Golden Eagles chipped away at the North Platte lead and took the lead for good with a minute left to go in the game at 53-51 on a three-pointer by Mariah Sheets. Katelyn Smith and Allee Williamson each went 1 for 2 at the free throw line in the final seconds to seal the win for the Lady Golden Eagles.

The Lady Golden Eagles, now 5-7 on the season, were led by Smith and Caylin Arnold, who each scored 13 points. Arnold also added nine rebounds to lead the Lady Golden Eagles.

The Lady Knights are now 5-9 on the season. Duncan led all scorers with 14 points. Thomesha Wilson was the only other Lady Knight to score in double figures with 11 points. Wilson completed the double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Lady Knights will next be in action when they open Region IX Division II play when they face Southeast Community College on Saturday, January 14 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

NPCC basketball teams to host Laramie County on Wednesday night

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights and Knights basketball teams will host the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles on Wednesday, Jan 11 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on the South Campus of NPCC.

The Lady Golden Eagles are in their first year of existence since 1992 and are currently 4-7 on the season.

The Lady Golden Eagles are averaging 61.2 points per game and allowing 69.0 ppg. Three Lady Golden Eagles are averaging in double figures led by Darian Hale, who is averaging 11.3 ppg. Caylin Arnold is second on the team at 10.4 ppg, followed by Madison Hamm at 103 ppg. Hamm also leads the Lady Golden Eagles in rebounding at 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Lady Knights are 5-8 on the season. The Lady Knights average 64.8 ppg and allow 65.2 ppg.

Thomesha Wilson leads the Lady Knights in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 ppg and 7.8 rpg.

The women’s game is not a Region IX game. The Lady Golden Eagles are in Division I South Sub-Region and the Lady Knights are in Region IX Division II.

The men’s game is a Region IX South Sub-Region contest.

The Golden Eagles are 9-7 overall and 3-1 in the South Sub-Region. The Golden Eagles lost their first five contests but have went 9-2 since. They are averaging 80.1 ppg and allowing 76.3 ppg.

Five Golden Eagles are averaging in double figures, led by Alfonzo Anderson at 15.3 ppg. Da’Zhon Wyche is second on the team at 13.1 ppg. Elijah Oliver at 12.9 ppg, Ola Ayodele at 11.1 ppg, and Dominik Heinzl at 10.9 ppg are the three others scoring in double figures. Harrison Meads leads the Golden Eagles in rebounding at 8.5 rpg.

The Knights are 10-2 on the season and 2-2 in the South Sub-Region. The Knights average 93.0 ppg and allow 67.9 ppg.

Diontae Champion leads the Knights in scoring at 18.4 ppg. He is followed by Mike Amius at 13.8 ppg. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at 6.1 rpg.
Other Knights scoring in double figures are: Godfrey Rolle at 11.5 ppg and Samuel Kearns at 11.0 ppg. Kearns is averaging 3.1 assists per game.

NPCC Lady Knights volleyball team signs Luisa Hernandez

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team added a new recruit to their 2017 class by signing Luisa Hernandez from Yuma, Colorado.

Hernandez, 5’7”, played middle blocker for the Yuma High School Lady Indians, coached by Jenny Noble. The Indians were 23-6 and the 2016 Colorado Class 1A volleyball state champions.

Hernandez played three seasons on the varsity. She had 701 kills and had a .278 kill efficiency. During her senior season Hernandez had 334 kills in 83 sets played and had a .340 kill efficiency.

In her career, Hernandez had 154 total blocks, 42 her senior season, 475 career defensive digs and 88 career service aces.

“We are excited to have Luisa join our program. She is a very dynamic hitter despite her size.” Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “She was a middle that played all the way around and we will probably move her to the outside and look to her to potentially be a six rotation player. She plays with a lot of fire and also was very excited about the school. I am excited to see what she can do for this team.”

Hernandez is the fourth incoming recruit for the Lady Knights 2017 season. Shaylee Johnson from Fleming, Colo., Jordyn Simpson from North Platte, and Taylin McNair from Imperial are the others.

HIGHLIGHTS: NPCC men roll to second straight Region IX win in 99-58 rout of Eastern Wyoming

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Eastern Wyoming College 99-58 on Saturday afternoon at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The game was a National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub-Region contest.

The Lancers Petar Skoknic drained a three pointer at the 19 minute mark to start the scoring and give the Lancers a lead of 3-0. It was the only lead that the Lancers would have for the rest of the game as Samuel Kearns sank four three-pointers to help the Knights jump out to a 27-7 lead for their biggest lead in the first half. Diontae Champion added nine points during the run.

The Lancers pulled within six points at 39-33 on a field goal by Will Osborn. That was the closest the Lancers would get the rest of the game. The Knights outscored the Lancers the remainder of the half 9-1 to take a 48-34 halftime lead.

In the second half the Knights opened it up scoring 51 points, while allowing 24 points for the Lancers.

The Knights improve to 10-2 on the season and 2-2 in South Sub-Region play. Champion led the Knights in scoring with 27 points. Three other Knights scored in double figures. Kearns was next on the scoring list with 19 points. Godfrey Rolle was next with 15 points and David Niklasson added 10 points.
Champion had six rebounds to lead the Knights. Kearns and Rolle each had four assists.

The Lancers fall to 2-14 on the season and 0-5 in South Sub-Region play. Two Lancers scored in double figures led by Skoknic, who had 16 points. Osborn added 10 points. Walker Korrell had five rebounds to lead the Lancers.

The Knights will try to extend their three-game winning streak and improve in the South Sub-Region when they host Laramie County Community College on Wednesday, January 11.

HIGHLIGHTS: NPCC women lose semester opener against Eastern Wyoming 69-54

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team was defeated by the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers 69-54 on Saturday afternoon at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

In the first quarter the game went back and forth, having six lead changes and four ties with the Lady Knights holding a 18-16 lead.

In the second quarter, the Lady Knights outscored the Lady Lancers 18-15 to take a 36-31 halftime lead.

The Lady Lancers started out the third quarter by going on a 9-2 run to take a 40-38 lead. The Lady Lancers led at the end of the third quarter 49-45.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Lady Lancers. They jumped out to a 16-4 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 65-49.

The Lady Knights, now 5-8 on the season were led in scoring by Thomesha Wilson, who scored 18 points. Allison Tichy added 13 points and Jessica Lovitt contributed 10 points. Wilson led the Lady Knights in rebounding with nine rebounds.

The Lady Lancers, who are 9-8 on the season, had four players in double figures. Emily Evans, Sarah Bersang, and Sophie Claycomb each had 16 points and Anna Perez Gomez added 12 points. Katrina Terrell had 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Lancers.

The Lady Knights will host the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles on Wednesday, January 11. This is the first year for the Golden Eagles women’s basketball team

NPCC Knights hold on for 69-67 win over Western Nebraska

NPCC Knights on ESPNNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Knights basketball team defeated the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars in a National Junior College Athletic Association Region IX South Sub-Region contest Friday night 69-67 at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Knights controlled the early part of the game, jumping out to a 14-2 lead. Samuel Kearns hit a pair of three-pointers and a field goal for eight of the 14 points.

The Knights maintained their lead over the Cougars throughout the first half. The Cougars did cut the Knights lead to one at 20-19 on a free throw by Vinnie Shahid.

The Knights closed out the first half by going on a 19-7 run to lead at halftime 39-26.

In the second half, the Knights extended their lead to 17 leading 49-32.

The Cougars cut away at the Knights lead and took the lead at the one minute mark 67-65 on a three-pointer by Trent Harris.

The Knights Victor Lewis regained the lead for the Knights at 68-67 on an old-fashioned three point play. Godfrey Rolle took the charge by Marlon Sierra, which would have put the Cougars up by one. On the inbound play, Kearns was fouled at hit one of two of his free throws to seal the win.

The Knights, now 9-2 on the season and 1-2 in South Sub-Region play was led in scoring by Diontae Champion, who led all scorers with 25 points. Kearns added 13 points and Mike Amius finished with 10 points. Buom Dubol led the Knights in rebounding with six rebounds.

The Cougars, 9-6 overall and 2-2 in the South Sub-Region, had their five game winning streak snapped. They were led by Shahid, who had 21 points. Michael Conner Jr finished with 14 points and Jeremy Ruffin had 12 points. Ruffin and Shahid each had six rebounds to pace the Cougars.
