Royals Claim LHP Schuster off Waivers from Padres

Patrick Schuster Kansas City RoyalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have plucked left-handed pitcher Patrick Schuster off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

The Royals also sent catcher Adam Moore to the Padres on Tuesday for cash considerations.

Schuster, who has not pitched above Class A, was placed on the 40-man major league roster. To clear roster space for Schuster, the Royals designated for assignment outfielder Carlos Peguero.

The 23-year-old Schuster had a 1.83 ERA in 55 games last year for Visalia in the California League. He struck out 45, allowed 30 hits, and walked 18 in 44 1-3 innings.

Hickson Has Surgery to Fix Torn ACL

JJ-Hickson-Denver-NuggetsDENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets say forward J.J. Hickson had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right knee on Tuesday.

Hickson hurt his ACL early in the fourth quarter of Denver’s loss at Dallas last Friday, when he went down along the baseline. This has been an injury-riddled season for the Nuggets, who were already without Danilo Gallinari, JaVale McGee and Nate Robinson after they each had season-ending operations.

The 25-year-old Hickson averaged 11.8 points and 9.2 rebounds this season. He also had a team-high 26 double-doubles.

Nuggets general manager Tim Connelly said of Hickson: “We know he will attack his rehab with the same energy and hard work that he displays on the court every night.”

NFL to Tweak Replay Reviews

nfl_logo2011-medORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — The NFL officiating department will oversee replay reviews on challenged plays beginning next season.

League owners passed a rule Tuesday in which referees can consult with director of officiating Dean Blandino and his staff to help determine whether a call should be upheld or overturned.

Blandino and other staff will be monitoring the games, and they will immediately begin reviewing challenges before the referee even gets to his monitor. They then can make recommendations on what replays to look at, but the referee still will make the final decision.

Blandino believes the change will speed up the review process and help ensure the calls are made correctly.

Denver_NuggetsOKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Kevin Durant had 27 points and eight assists to help the Oklahoma City Thunder defeat the Denver Nuggets 117-96 on Monday night.

Durant, who was coming off a 51-point game against Toronto on Friday, is averaging 37 points during the winning streak. The Thunder sat point guard Russell Westbrook so he could rest his surgically repaired right knee.

Silver: 2 Years of College Best for NBA Players

NBA-BasketballCHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Adam Silver says he’s heard the “Bill Gates theory” numerous times from critics over the last month: You shouldn’t be required to attend college to become a millionaire.

But the new NBA commissioner steadfastly believes that basketball players should spend at least two years in college before being allowed to enter the draft — instead of the required one.

Fair or not, he says it’s simply best for the league.

Speaking before Monday’s Rockets-Bobcats game in Charlotte, Silver says “I think two years is the right balance.”

That means if Silver had his way Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins would be staying in school another year. But there’s little he can do about that.

An agreement between the league and players association is not imminent.

Goodell, Union to Meet on Workplace Environment

nfl_logo2011-medORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Commissioner Roger Goodell says the NFL will meet on April 8 with the players union to discuss improving the workplace environment.

In the wake of the Miami Dolphins bullying scandal, league representatives have met with some 40 players in the last three months, as well as with the Dolphins and outside organizations, Goodell says Monday at the NFL owners meetings. The league is trying to get “as much input as possible. It’s more about people understanding the importance of a proper workplace.”

Goodell adds the focus is on medical evaluations of the players involved, including tackle Jonathan Martin, who left the Dolphins in the middle of last season, saying he was harassed by guard Richie Incognito. Martin was traded to the 49ers earlier this month.

Warren Buffett Fans Can Buy Cutouts of His Head

Warren Buffett Fathead CutoutOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Fans of investor Warren Buffett can now buy oversized cutouts of his head to wave around in public.

Buffett made several television appearances in recent weeks because his firm was insuring a $1 billion prize for a perfect NCAA tournament bracket in a Quicken Loans contest.

Buffett is chairman and CEO of the Omaha, Neb., based Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate.
