Creighton’s McDermott Leads All-Big East Team

Doug McDermott Creighton BluejaysNEW YORK (AP) — Creighton’s Doug McDermott, the eighth player in college basketball history to score more than 3,000 points, is among three unanimous selections for the All-Big East team.

Joining the two-time All-America as unanimous choices by the league’s coaches Sunday are Providence guard Bryce Cotton and Xavier guard Semaj Christon.

The rest of the six-man first team are Markel Starks of Georgetown, D’Angelo Harrison of St. John’s and James Bell of Villanova.

McDermott, who closed the regular season with a career-high 45 points Saturday against Providence, leads the nation is scoring with a 26.5 average. He is shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 44.7 percent from 3-point range and averages 7.2 rebounds.

Jacks Use Comeback To Sweep Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – A night after a third period comeback, the Muskegon Lumberjacks (24-22-4) completed a repeat performance, scoring three straight goals to erase an early deficit and win 4-3 over the Tri-City Storm (18-31-3) on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Storm forwards Austin Poganski and Dan Labosky each had a goal and an assist in the defeat for Tri-City, while defenseman Jalen Schulz scored his second goal of the season on a power play in the second period.

The game had an eerily similar script to Friday night’s contest. Just like the previous night, both teams held each other off the scoreboard for the majority of the opening period and each team notched a tally in the closing minutes of the frame.

After a penalty to Muskegon defenseman Adam Larkin for interference, the Storm went to the power play with less than three minutes remaining in the first. Chase Berger won the face-off to open the man advantage and got the puck to Labosky, who found Poganski in the perfect place for a re-direct that found its way to the twine.

The Lumberjacks tied the game at 1-1 with just five seconds remaining in the period on a goal by Trevor Morbeck, sending the teams into the first intermission with an even score.

In the second period Tri-City once again took control of the game, getting goals from both Labosky and Schulz.

For the second consecutive night, Labosky found himself within striking distance and used a quick blast to beat Muskegon goaltender Eric Schierhorn, giving Tri-City their second lead of the night at 2-1.

Later in the frame, Schulz put a puck toward the net and watched it redirect past Schierhorn for his second tally of the year to make it 3-1.

But Jack Rowe responded for Muskegon to cut the lead to 3-2 with his 13th goal of the season at 15:47 of the period.

In the final frame, the Lumberjacks got goals from Matej Paulovic and Cooper Marody to take the lead while holding the Storm quiet on the offensive end.

Tri-City goaltender Jacob Johansson saw 39 shots come his way, stopping 35 of them, while Schierhorn made 23 saves of his own to pick up the win.

The Storm will return to action next Saturday night, taking on the Sioux City Musketeers in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center at 7:05 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel, Drew Mayer, Kyle Eastman, and Patrick Curry, along with defensemen Cutler Martin, Sean Lang, Fredric Larsson and Tory Dello…

Creighton’s McDermott Scores 45, Goes Over 3,000

Doug McDermott Creighton BluejaysOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Doug McDermott scored a career-high 45 points and became the eighth player in Division I history to go over 3,000 for a career, and No. 13 Creighton rolled to an 88-73 victory over Providence on Saturday night.

McDermott passed the milestone with a 3-pointer midway through the second half. After the ball went in, he ran backward with his right hand in the air, three fingers raised. At the next timeout Doug and his coach-father, Greg McDermott, shared a long embrace on the court as the team huddled at the bench.

McDermott scored 22 points in the first half as the Bluejays (24-6, 14-4 Big East) put away the Friars (20-11, 10-8) quickly.

Bryce Cotton, the Big East’s second-leading scorer, had all of his 23 points in the second half for Providence. LaDontae Henton added 21.

No. 16 Nebraska Crushes No. 19 Michigan St. 86-58

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (AP) — Tear’a Laudermill scored 20 points and Rachel Theriot added 18 as third-seeded and No. 16 ranked Nebraska, exploded for a 50-point first half in beating No. 19 Michigan State, the No. 2 seed, 86-58 on Saturday in the Big Ten semifinals.

The Cornhuskers (24-6) advance to the Big Ten tournament championship game against No. 23 Iowa, the fifth-seeded team, on Sunday.

Nebraska was on top 24-17 in the first half prior to Laudermill’s 3-pointer that capped a 9-0 Cornhusker run and stretched the lead to 33-17 over Michigan State (22-9). Over the next 6 minutes, Nebraska upped that margin to 23 points and led the Spartans 50-27 at the break.

The Cornhuskers scored first in the second period, opening a 26-point lead, and coasted the remainder of the half, while shooting 52 percent from the floor.

Branndais Agee led Spartan scorers with 18 points.

Huskers’ Jamal Turner Opens Spring Practice at QB

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Wide receiver Jamal Turner spent most of Nebraska’s first spring football practice working at quarterback.

The Cornhuskers have a returning starter in Tommy Armstrong and a highly regarded top challenger in Johnny Stanton. But coach Bo Pelini said Saturday he wants to explore all options this spring.

Turner was recruited as a quarterback in 2011 but switched to receiver early his freshman year. He’s made 60 catches for 762 yards and four touchdowns the past three seasons.

He was limited to eight games because of injury last season and caught 13 balls for 102 yards and a TD.

Shields, Vargas to Start Season for Royals

kc-royalsSURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — James Shields and Jason Vargas will start the Kansas City Royals’ first two games of the season at Detroit.

Manager Ned Yost announced opening starters Saturday and says Wade Davis is no longer a candidate for a spot in the rotation.

Davis made 24 starts before being sent to the bullpen last season. Yost says the decision on Davis was made after Luke Hochevar was lost for the season to reconstructive elbow surgery.

Yost says left-hander Danny Duffy and rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura are the remaining candidates to fill out the rotation.

Jeremy Guthrie, who led the Royals with 15 victories last year, will start the home opener on April 4 against the Chicago White Sox.

Shields, who started the opener last season, was 13-9 with a 3.15 ERA last.

Lumberjacks Complete Comeback, Top Tri-City

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Muskegon Lumberjacks (23-22-4) used a three-goal third period to defeat the Tri-City Storm (18-30-3) by a score of 4-3 in the first of a two-game weekend series on Friday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Storm defenseman Daniel Fritz scored his first USHL goal in his 35th career game, while forwards Dan Labosky and Conner Valesano each netted tallies in the loss for Tri-City.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 18 minutes of the game, but both teams scored in the final two minutes of the opening period and the game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

With Storm forward Garrett Gamez sitting in the box for a slashing penalty, the Lumberjacks capitalized, taking a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by defenseman Christian Wolanin.

Tri-City tied things right back up when Fritz got his first strike of the season less than a minute later. A clearing attempt took a bounce off a skate and landed on the stick of the Harwood, Md. native, who stepped into a shot that went over the right shoulder of Muskegon goaltender Eric Schierhorn.

The Storm opened up a two-goal lead in the second, capitalizing on offensive opportunities less than two minutes apart from each other.

First, Labosky took a pass from Cody Milan and turned on his wheels, beating everyone up the ice and wristing a shot to the upper right corner of the Muskegon net to give Tri-City a 2-1 lead. With the assist, Milan now has his longest point streak of the season at three games.

Then Garrett Gamez found Valesano for a one-timer 1:11 later to push the Storm lead to 3-1. Forward Austin Poganski notched the second assist, his ninth helper and 24th point of the year.

Later in the middle period, Storm netminder Jacob Johansson did his best to preserve the lead, stopping 17 shots in the frame. Tri-City held on to their two-goal edge to start the final period.

But the bounces weren’t as kind to the Storm in the final 20 minutes, and the Lumberjacks scored three consecutive goals to re-take the lead and win the game 4-3.

The final tallies were scored by Christopher Dodero, Adam Larkin and Matej Paulovic.

Schierhorn picked up his 14th win of the season in net, making 29 saves, while Johansson stopped 38 shots for Tri-City in the loss.

The two teams will line up for a rematch on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center with the opening face-off taking place at 7:05 p.m.

Denver_NuggetsDENVER (AP) — Kenneth Faried scored a career-high 32 points, Ty Lawson had 30 and the Denver Nuggets beat the skidding Los Angeles Lakers 134-126 on Friday night.

Wilson Chandler had 19 points, and Timofey Mozgov and Evan Fournier added 13 apiece for the Nuggets, who swept the three-game season series.

Pau Gasol scored 27 points to lead the Lakers in their third straight defeat and sixth in eight games. This one ensured their first losing season since going 34-48 in 2004-05.

Jordan Farmar and Robert Sacre had 24 points apiece for the Lakers, who were coming off a 142-94 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday. The 48-point defeat was the biggest in franchise history.

No. 16 Nebraska Defeats Minnesota 80-67

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jordan Hooper scored 33 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as No. 16 Nebraska beat Minnesota 80-67 in the Big Ten quarterfinals on Friday night.

The third-seeded Cornhuskers will play No. 19 and second-seeded Michigan State on Saturday for a spot in the championship game. During the regular season Nebraska and Michigan State split two contests.

Emily Cady scored 15 points and Rachel Theriot added 14 points and a career-high 18 assists for the Cornhuskers (23-6).

Minnesota (20-12) trailed by just five points after Mikayla Bailey hit a 3 with 6:54 left to play. Cady responded by opening up an 11-0 run — which saw five Cornhuskers score — to give Nebraska a decisive lead that carried through the rest of the game.

Stabresa McDaniel came off the bench to score 14 points for the No.6 seeded Golden Gophers and Rachel Banham added 12.

Huskers’ Pelini Receives 1-Year Contract Extension

bo peliniLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini has received a one-year contract extension through February 2019.

Athletic department spokeswoman Chris Anderson on Friday confirmed the extension, which was first reported by CBSSports.com. Anderson said terms were not immediately available for release.

Pelini is 57-24 in six seasons, but there was speculation about his job status at the end of last season as the Cornhuskers’ streak of no conference championships stretched to 14 years.

Minutes after Nebraska lost its last regular-season game, to Iowa, Pelini defended his record and said, “If they want to fire me, go ahead.” Athletic director Shawn Eichorst issued a statement of support for Pelini the next day, but as recently as Tuesday had refused to answer questions about a contract extension.
