NEW YORK (AP) — The NCAA football rules committee tabled a proposal Wednesday that would have penalized offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play clock.
After a conference call, the panel agreed not to send the so-called 10-second rule to the playing rules oversight panel for approval Thursday.
NCAA national coordinator of officials Rogers Redding says withdrawing the proposal allows “time to gather more information from the medical community and allow time for a broader discussion of the implications of that change.”
The proposal, touted as a move to protect players by slowing fast-break offenses, infuriated many coaches.
Redding also says a new proposal was passed to expand roughing the passer to include “forcible” hits to the knees or below.
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Kansas City Royals right-hander Luke Hochevar likely will miss at least the first two months of the season because of a sprained ligament in his right elbow.
Hochevar, the first pick in the 2006 amateur draft, felt something unusual in the elbow during his next-to-last pitch Monday in a two-inning outing against the Chicago White Sox, according to manager Ned Yost.
The sprain was revealed in an MRI taken Tuesday.
Yost said Wednesday Hochevar won’t throw for two-to-three weeks and “probably the best-case scenario” would be a return at the end of May or early June.
Hochevar was 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA and two saves in 58 relief appearances last year and was a candidate for the final rotation slot this season. He is earning $5.21 million and is eligible for free agency after the season.
NEW YORK (AP) — A proposed rule change that would penalize college football offenses for snapping the ball before 10 seconds had run off the 40-second play clock is scheduled to be reviewed one last time by an NCAA committee on Wednesday.
The conference call by the football rules committee is a routine step in the process, but also the last opportunity for the proposal to be withdrawn before it goes to the playing rules oversight panel on Thursday.
If the panel approves the proposal, the rule would go into effect next season.
The proposed change was made to address player-safety concerns held by some coaches who say hurry up, no-huddle offenses that increase the number of plays in games and limit defensive substitutions put players at greater risk for injuries.
The NSAA has released the brackets for the 2014 boys basketball State Tournament and St. Pat’s is the No. 2 seed in Class D1.
The Irish won the D1-6 district over Hemingford on Tuesday, 60-59 in overtime, to secure their berth and the No. 2 seed in the state tournament. St. Pat’s has a 24-1 record on the season and hasn’t lost since January 17 when they fell on the road to Overton 62-45. The Eagles of Overton are the No. 4 seed in the D1 tournament.
The Irish’s first round opponent is Clearwater/Orchard. The Cyclones are 21-4 on the season and are riding a five-game winning streak. Their last loss was February 11 to Ewing, 52-46. Clearwater/Orchard won the D1-4 district with a 57-56 win over Sandhills/Thedford.

Sterling, CO – The No. 15 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (27-5, 12-4 South Sub-Region) had their season come to an Tuesday evening in Sterling, Colo. as they fell to the No. 9 Gillette College Pronghorns (29-3, 15-1 North Sub-Region) 86-74 in the Region IX Semifinals.
The Knights finish the year with 27 wins to go along with only five losses. The five losses are the second fewest in a season in Knights history and the 84.4 win percentage also ranks second All-Time. The 27 wins are tied for the 4th most in program history.
The Knights started off the game with Gillette playing tentatively, while the Pronghorns were the aggressor. Gillette would jump out to a lead and maintain it throughout the half despite the best efforts of Cameron Williams and Ethan Montalvo who finished with 14 and 10 points in the half. Lorenzo Bonam paced the Pronghorns with 10 points. The Knights had 11 turnovers in the half compared to only 3 for the Pronghorns as Gillette took a 35-44 lead into intermission.
At the start of the second half, the Knights scored on their first several possessions to immediately cut into the Pronghorns lead. The Knights would never be out of the game until the final minutes as on multiple occasions the lead was cut to only four points. However, the Knights could never get over the hump and make the game any closer than four points despite multiple opportunities.
Late in the game, the Pronghorns were able to stretch their lead off multiple fast break opportunities and from the free throw line. In the game, both teams made 31 field goals and five 3-pointers. The difference in the game came from the free throw line where the Knights only shot 7 of 13 while the Pronghorns shot 19 of 25.
Freshman Cameron Williams led the Knights in scoring as he finished with 24 points while chipping in seven rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Ethan Montalvo finished with 20 points and sophomore Tim Simmons scored 11 and had five assists as the only other Knights in double-figures. Sophomore Jake Maslo led the Knights in rebounds with nine and scored six points.
Muhammed Ahmed scored 15 second half points and finished with 24 to lead the Pronghorns while Lorenzo Bonam scored 21 and Dwight Anderson scored 15. Ahmed and Bonam finished with double-doubles as they both recorded 11 rebounds.
The game was the last in a Knights uniform for sophomores Ethan Montalvo, Tim Simmons, Jake Maslo, Tre’Vaun Hymer, Jimma Lew and Marcus Linson. Hymer joined the program at the semester break of his freshman year.
The sophomores have been a part of the most successful two year stretch in program history as they compiled a 57-11 record during their career, including a Region IX Championship in 2013 and National Tournament appearance. The 57 wins are the most in program history in a two year stretch and the 11 losses are the fewest. The sophomores have never known defeat at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium finishing a perfect 28-0 in their two years which is also a school record.
Montalvo and Simmons will go down as two of the best players in Knights history as they both finished in the Top 50 of the Knights career scoring list.
Montalvo finishes his career with 1,173 points to finish 5th All-Time and ties Chase Grabau, Ben Wilson and Aboubacar Casse for most games played in a Knights uniform at 68. Montalvo started every single game of his Knights career.
Simmons finishes his career with 700 career points to finish 40th All-Time to go along with his assignment of guarding the best player every night.
“I am so proud of our team and the effort that they gave us night in and night out,” said head coach Kevin O’Connor. “We will miss all of sophomores; they were a true representation of what wearing a Knights uniform is all about. They led our program on the court, in the classroom and in the community. They will be unbelievable hard to replace.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera had 18 points and a career-high 12 rebounds Tuesday night, and Georgetown frustrated Doug McDermott until late in the game, holding off a rally led by the nation’s leading scorer in a 75-63 win over No. 13 Creighton.
Markel Starks added 17 points and 11 assists, and Jabril Trawick had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Hoyas (17-12, 8-9 Big East), who shot 54 percent and advanced their cause as a bubble team for the NCAA tournament. They also still have a chance to be one of the six teams in the overhauled, 10-team Big East to get a bye in next week’s conference tournament.
McDermott scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, making a series of 3-pointers that helped cut a 16-point deficit to five. He was 3 for 10 from the field in the first half and 9 for 23 for the game, including 4 for 11 from 3-point range.
DENVER (AP) — Brian Shaw found himself in a downright defensive mood at practice.
So for nearly two hours Tuesday, the first-year Denver Nuggets coach had his team work on nothing but defense and defense and more defense.
A training camp style of practice as Shaw described it. Anything to get the Nuggets going again.
Because these days, very little seems to be working. Even the return of point guard Ty Lawson on Monday against Minnesota couldn’t snap the Nuggets out of their funk. They’ve now dropped six in a row and 11 of their last 12.
KEARNEY, Neb. – Storm fans will have a chance to get a look at the team’s future during March as Tri-City will be bringing in some of their high school affiliate players in to play games.
In the USHL, affiliate players are selected during the USHL Draft, but play elsewhere the following season. USHL teams maintain the rights to their affiliate players and use them to play on a part-time basis until they are ready to be placed on the roster full-time.
Each team has 18 total affiliate spots for players born in 1995, 1996 and 1997. All current Storm affiliates are ages 16-18.
This past weekend, Storm fans got to see Matthew Freytag, Tri-City’s second round pick in the 2013 USHL Phase I Draft. Freytag, who is from Wayzata, Minn. and is committed to the University of Wisconsin, played in his first three USHL games against Lincoln and Fargo over the weekend.
Three more Storm affiliates will make their USHL debut this weekend. They include Jake Wahlin, Mike Lee and Alec Mehr.
Wahlin was acquired from Sioux City in a trade that sent Joel L’Esperance to the Musketeers in January. A native of St. Paul, Minn., Wahlin was originally drafted by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2012 USHL Futures Draft.
Wahlin spent his season with White Bear Lake High School in Minnesota and will wear No. 12 for the rest of the year. The forward is committed to play collegiately at the University of Massachusetts.
Lee and Mehr are teammates at The Gunnery Preparatory School in Washington, Conn. and are expected to play in both games this weekend against Muskegon.
Lee, a defenseman who hails from Hamden, Conn., was drafted by the Storm in the seventh round of the 2013 USHL Phase II Draft. He is committed to play in the Hockey East with the University of Vermont and will wear No. 2 for Tri-City.
Mehr, a forward who grew up in Irvine, Calif. before relocating to play in prep school, was picked in the eighth round of the 2013 Phase I Draft. He will wear jersey No. 27.
Other affiliates expected to play in games during the final month of the season include forward Karch Bachman and defensemen Gordie Myer, Jason Krych and Michael Joyaux.
Bachman has two games of USHL experience, playing with the Storm against Team USA in November. Joyaux has also appeared in three games this season.
Tri-City has 10 games remaining in the 2013-14 season, and will play six more contests in Kearney at the Viaero Event Center.
The Storm are back in action Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as they host a weekend series with Muskegon. Saturday’s game will get underway at 7:05.

Two student-athletes from the University of Nebraska – Emily Wong and Spencer Long – have been chosen as the 2014 Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award recipients by the Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership. The award is an annual scholarship recognizing one male and one female Big Ten senior student-athlete pursuing a postgraduate degree for achievements in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and leadership.
In recognition of the Big Ten’s leadership in fully integrating athletics into the academic mission of its member institutions, the Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership initiated the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award in 2008. Each Big Ten institution was asked to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for 2013, with a $10,000 scholarship awarded to each winner.
The Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award is named for the former Big Ten Conference commissioner who served from 1971-89. While leading the Big Ten, Duke spent much of his time working to improve academic standards and graduation rates for student-athletes. The award is made possible by donations from local corporations and individuals supporting collegiate student-athletes. The Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership is comprised of the State of Indiana, City of Indianapolis, Indiana Sports Corp, Pacers Sports & Entertainment, and Visit Indy.
Wong, a women’s gymnastics student-athlete, is completing her nutrition science degree and psychology/child, youth and family studies minor at the University of Nebraska and expects to graduate in December, 2014. With a 3.918 GPA and numerous academic accolades, she intends to continue her education to become a physical therapist.
Wong has been recognized with multiple Academic All-Big Ten accolades and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards as well as National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches First Team and Scholastic All-America honors. She is an elected member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
In addition to her commitment to academic excellence, Wong’s passion for helping those in need is shown through her involvement in numerous community service activities. She has participated in multiple cancer awareness walks and has spent numerous hours helping children by reading books, playing games, sharing in Christmas parties, distributing toys and candy, and spreading joy by spending full days of fun-filled activities with them around town. Her passion for helping others came from watching her parents establish relationships at their family-run restaurant at a young age. After the recent passing of her father, she became fully committed to continue his legacy by helping people reach their full potential and to making an impact on their lives.

Long is also very involved with a student-led, not-for-profit organization that uses the influence of college football student-athletes to raise awareness and provide funding for those with pediatric brain cancer.
