Creighton’s Zierden is Out with Knee Injury

Creighton-Jays-BasketballOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Reserve guard Isaiah Zierden of No. 9 Creighton is out indefinitely because of ligament damage in his right knee.

Creighton spokesman Rob Anderson said in a text message Sunday night that X-rays showed no fractures or bone chips in the knee. The freshman injured his medial collateral ligament when he got tied up with a defender in Saturday’s 75-69 loss at Xavier. Zierden will undergo an MRI on Monday.

Zierden, who is averaging 3.3 points in 11 minutes per game, has played an increasing role the past month. He had season highs of 13 points and 24 minutes in a win over then-No. 6 Villanova on Feb. 16.

Storm Fall Short To Fargo

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm (18-29-3) lost their third straight Sunday afternoon at the Viaero Event Center 4-3 to the Fargo Force (9-35-5). With the win, Fargo swept the weekend series between the two teams in Kearney.

Chris Wilkie notched three points, scoring a goal and two assists to add to his team leading scoring total of 31, while Cody Milan scored his second goal in as many nights.

Tri-City scored first midway through the first period when Dan Labosky found Wilkie, the North Dakota commit, sitting in front of the net for his 15th goal of the season.

Three minutes later, Fargo took advantage of a power play as Tyler Hynes netted his 15th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

Less than a minute after the goal by Hynes, following a Storm turnover in the Fargo zone, Force forward Andrew Zerban snuck one past Storm goaltender Hayden Lavigne to give his team a 2-1 lead.

Heading into the locker room for the first intermission, Fargo had themselves a 2-1 lead.

In the second period Tri-City had a great opportunity to put the puck in the net after Zerban took a major penalty for boarding. The Storm offense had a 5-on-4 opportunity for five minutes, but couldn’t convert.

At the conclusion of the middle period, the teams left the ice without any change in score and Fargo leading 2-1 going into the third.

Tri-City only needed 52 seconds to find an equalizer in the final period. Taking advantage of a power play, Wilkie and Austin Poganski found Chase Berger diving in front of the net to tie the game.

Fargo answered back moments later as Alex Jackstadt found a rebound in front of the net and backhanded the puck through Lavigne’s legs to retake the lead at 3-2.

The Force padded their lead later in the period on a deflection in front by defensemen Tanner Jago.

With an extra attacker on the ice for Tri-City late in the third period, White Lake, Mich. native Cody Milan forced the puck into the net to cut the Force lead to 4-3.

But the Storm were unable to pull even, as their few last second opportunities in the waning moments of the game were unsuccessful.

Fargo goaltender Mathias Israelsson outdueled Lavigne for the win and finished the afternoon with 33 saves. Lavigne turned aside 34 shots of his own.

The Storm will host five more games in Kearney over the next three weeks.

Tri-City is back in action Friday night at 7:30 p.m. as they host a weekend series with the Muskegon Lumberjacks at the Viaero Event Center. Saturday’s game will start at 7:05.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Nolan Aibel, and Joey DiBenedetto, along with defensemen Cutler Martin Sean Lang, Fredric Larsson and Tory Dello…

No. 19 Purdue Women Beat No. 16 Nebraska 82-66

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Courtney Moses had a season-high 29 points, the injured KK Houser provided an emotional lift and the No. 19 Purdue women spoiled No. 16 Nebraska’s Big Ten title hopes with an 82-66 victory Sunday.

Despite tearing her ACL at Michigan State on Feb. 2, Houser started the game and played the first 2:34. She also entered the game shortly before the conclusion to be honored as a senior with a standing ovation.

Moses, meanwhile, celebrated her senior day by helping the Boilermakers (21-7, 11-5) to a great start, scoring eight points during Purdue’s 10-0 run to start the game.

By halftime, Purdue led 43-23 and Moses had 18 points with 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Rachel Theriot had 24 points to lead Nebraska (22-6, 12-4) which entered the game with an opportunity to share the Big Ten title with No. 8 Penn State.

Blazers Beat Nuggets 102-96, Sweep Season Series

Denver_NuggetsPORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Robin Lopez scored 18 points, LaMarcus Aldridge returned from an injury to add 16, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets 102-96 on Saturday night to sweep the series for the first time in 15 years.

Nicolas Batum had a career-high 16 rebounds for Portland, which has won its last five games.

Kenneth Faried, Randy Foye and Evan Fournier scored 16 points apiece, but Denver lost its fifth straight. Faried took a hard fall with less than two minutes left and appeared to injure his right knee, but finished out the game.

Portland won all four meetings, its first sweep of the series since the 1999 season, when the Blazers won all three games against the Nuggets.

Early Lead Not Enough As Storm Fall To Force

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Fargo Force (8-35-5) erased a two-goal deficit in the third period and defeated the Tri-City Storm (18-28-3) in a shootout 5-4 at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Storm forward Austin Poganski had a goal and an assist, while Conner Valesano netted a power play goal for Tri-City in the defeat.

Fargo was able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead when forward Andrew Zerban scored just 1:36 into the opening period.

But Tri-City quickly evened the game minutes later when Poganski found Valesano in front at the end of a Storm power play. Poganski took a pass from Dan Labosky and raced into the offensive zone, skated wide right of the net and delivered the puck at the perfect time for Valesano to deflect it past Force netminder Brendan Jensen to tie the game at 1-1.

The Storm then took control of the game when forward Kyle Eastman scored less than two minutes after Valesano’s strike. Tri-City had the puck deep in the offensive zone when Labosky found Eastman in front for a quick release wrist shot that beat Jensen up high and gave the Storm a 2-1 lead.

In the final minute of the first period, the Storm’s line of Nick Hutchison, Drew Mayer and Cody Milan continued the hard work and got rewarded. Milan threw the puck towards the net and it deflected past the goal line with just 14 seconds remaining, pushing the Tri-City lead to 3-1 going into the intermission. The goal was Milan’s first in a Storm uniform.

The second period was more of the same for the Storm, as they outshot Fargo 16-5. Poganski made it 4-1 after a great individual effort, driving to the net and shoving the puck in using only one hand on his stick. Both Valesano and Fritz picked up assists on the goal. For Fritz, it was his first point since coming to Tri-City from Sioux Falls.

Poganski is now the leader on the team with 15 goals this season.

The Force cut the Storm lead to 4-2 when Mikey Eyssimont scored at 11:03 of the middle frame, taking a pass from Tyler Hynes and redirecting it past Storm goaltender Jacob Johansson.

Fargo was able to capitalize on two power play opportunities in the third period to tie the game at 4-4, with both Hynes and Garick Gray finding the back of the net.

With neither team able to find the tiebreaker in overtime, the game went to a shootout.

In the skill session, both goaltenders stopped the first four shooters they faced until forward C.J. Hayes beat Johansson in the fifth round. Chase Berger had a chance to tie it for the Storm, but missed and the Force secured two points for their eighth win of the season.

The two teams will do battle again on Sunday afternoon at the Viaero Event Center, with the game getting underway at 3:05 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Joey DiBenedetto and Nolan Aibel, along with defensemen Cutler Martin, Fredric Larsson, Sean Lang and Tory Dello…

Martin Leads Xavier Over No. 9 Creighton 75-69

Creighton-Jays-BasketballCINCINNATI (AP) — Justin Martin had 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds on Saturday, and Xavier led most of the way during a 75-69 victory over No. 9 Creighton in front of the largest crowd in the 14-year history of the Musketeers’ arena.

It was a long-awaited rematch for Xavier, (20-9, 10-6), which lost one of the Big East’s most wide-open games at Creighton in January.

Martin led the way. The junior guard helped Xavier control the tempo and build a 13-point lead early in the second half that was more than enough.

Creighton (23-5, 13-3) couldn’t catch up despite 27 points by Doug McDermott, who leads the nation in scoring.

McDermott had 35 points during the Bluejays’ 95-89 win at home on Jan. 12, a game that showed the reconfigured Big East was a whole different conference. Xavier had more going for it in the rematch.

Shields Leads Nebraska Over Northwestern 54-47

Nebraska-Huskers-Basketball

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Shavon Shields had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Nebraska, which took a 10-point lead with 7 minutes left and held on to defeat Northwestern 54-47 Saturday.

With the win, Nebraska (17-11, 9-7 Big Ten) is guaranteed a .500 conference record, a Big Ten first for the Huskers, now in their third season in the conference. Nebraska won nine conference games for the first time since 1998-99 and only the 10th time since World War II.

Northwestern (12-17, 5-11) has now lost six straight games, a streak that began with a 53-49 loss to Nebraska on Feb. 8.

Nebraska took the lead 3½ minutes into the game and never trailed thereafter. Northwestern cut the lead to 31-30 on Drew Crawford’s 3-pointer with 11:46 remaining.

A 3-point play by Shields triggered a 13-4 Nebraska run that made the score 44-34 with 7 minutes left.

No. 15 NPCC Knights Survive and Advance on Pascolo Lay-Up

npcc-knightsSterling, CO – The No. 15 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (26-4, 12-4 South Sub-Region) survived and advanced Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Region IX Tournament defeating the Central Wyoming College Rustlers (12-17, 6-10 North Sub-Region) 71-69 on lay-up by Marco Pascolo out of a baseline out of bounds play with 2.1 seconds remaining.

“It’s that time of year where all that matters is winning and advancing,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “We took their punch early and were able to get back in the game possession by possession. We are very excited to continue our season Monday.”

The Knights started off the game slow as the Rustlers scored the first nine points of the game to take the early lead. Two free throws by Ethan Montalvo finally got the Knights on the board. The Rustlers continued their hot play as they would gain as much as 16-30 lead in the second half. The Knights would not go quietly and battled back to only trail 27-34 at intermission behind nine points from Montalvo and seven from Tim Simmons.

The Knights got right on track at the start of the second half as Marco Pascolo hit back-to-back threes to immediately cut into the Rustlers lead. The Knights completed their battle back to take a lead as Simmons started to take over with drives to the basket and assists to teammates for easy buckets. The Knights would stretch their lead to as many as nine points, but were never able to close the door on the Rustlers.

The Rustlers were able to hang around behind the hot shooting of Bryce Canda who went 7 of 7 from the 3-point line on his way to 26 points. After a couple free throw misses, the Ruslters had the ball down two with 34 seconds left. A foul was called on the Knights in the back court and Elmer Lopez knocked down both free throws to tie the game at 69 points. The Knights took a timeout with eight seconds left to set up a final play. After the ball was deflected out of bounds with 3.5 seconds left the Knights took another timeout setting up Pascolo’s heroics.

On the ensuing inbounds play Pascolo slipped to the basket and was rewarded with a pass from Simmons that he finished with 2.1 seconds remaining to give the Knights the winning basket. The Rustlers attempted a full court pass that was intercepted by the Knights to end the game.

“It was a tough game,” said Tim Simmons. “We got back in it on defense and we were fortunate to pull it out in the end and play again Monday.”

Simmons led the Knights with 16 points. Montalvo finished with 15, Pascolo finished with 14 and Cameron Williams finished with 11 points to round out the scorers in double-figures for the Knights. Aireon Porter contributed eight points and nine rebounds.

Canda finished with 26 points, while Isaiah Tademy had 14 and Elmer Lopez had 12 to pace the Rustlers.

The Knights advance to the Quarterfinals of the Region IX Tournament and will face the winner of No. 3 seed Casper College (18-12, 11-5 North Sub-Region) and No. 6 seed Lamar Community College (11-19, 7-9 South Sub-Region) on Monday March 3 at 2 p.m. CST. The game will be live streamed at www.ihigh.com/gonjc/ and will be broadcast live be ESPN Radio 1410.
