LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska athletic department spokesman says women’s basketball coach Connie Yori was fighting an infection and was dehydrated when she collapsed during the 17th-ranked Cornhuskers’ game against Indiana on Sunday.

School spokesman Jeff Griesch said in a statement that Yori is resting at home. The team didn’t practice Monday. Yori is scheduled to meet with the media on Tuesday.

The 50-year-old Yori collapsed in front of the Nebraska bench with about 12 minutes left in Sunday’s game. Medics attended to her, and she walked off the court under her own power. She received further treatment in the athletic training room at Pinnacle Bank Arena before being evaluated at a hospital and released.

Associate head coach Sunny Smallwood took over coaching duties in Yori’s absence.

North Platte Community College Foundation Sponsoring NPCC Knights Halftime Activities Wednesday

Upstart Huskers, Creighton Fuel State Hoops Pride

Nebraska-Huskers-Creighton-Even Gov. Dave Heineman is getting caught up in the hype surrounding Nebraska’s major college basketball teams.

The Creighton Bluejays (21-4, 11-2) lead the Big East and their star Doug McDermott is a top candidate for national player of the year.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers (14-10, 6-6) upset then-No. 9 Michigan State on the road Sunday.

Their fifth win in six games pushed them to .500 in the Big Ten, and they’re bidding to make the NCAA field for the first time since 1998.

Heineman has been following college basketball since he was a cadet at West Point and Bobby Knight was Army’s coach. He told The Associated Press on Monday he’s relishing the possibility of Creighton and Nebraska making the NCAA tournament in the same year.

No. 13 NPCC Knights Host Laramie County, Southeast to close Regular Season

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 13 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (23-4, 11-4 South Sub-Region, 4-1 NCCAC) closes out their regular season by hosting a Region IX opponent and a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference opponent. The Knights first host the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (17-10, 8-6 South Sub-Region) on Wednesday Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. to close out their Region IX South Sub-Region slate. The last regular season game of the year for the Knights is Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. as the Knights welcome NCCAC foe, the Southeast Community College Storm (19-9, 0-4 NCCAC) to McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.

The Knights host Laramie County on Wednesday at 7 p.m. looking to avenge their first loss of the season to the Golden Eagles. The Knights fell 78-82 in Cheyenne, Wyo. on Jan. 15 despite 28 points from Ethan Montalvo and 21 points from Cameron Williams. Deshon Portley led the way for the Golden Eagles as he finished with 26 points.

The Knights have assured themselves of at least the number two seed in the upcoming Region IX Tournament that will be held March 1-5.

North Platte then closes out the regular season on Saturday Feb. 22 as Southeast Community College comes to town. The Storm are a NCCAC opponent and a win would clinch the conference our-right for the Knights for the third straight year and ninth title in ten years. The Knights defeated the Storm on Jan. 17 in Beatrice 83-68 behind a career-high 40 points from Ethan Montalvo.

The Knights currently lead the NCCAC with a 4-1 record. McCook Community College is in second place with a 3-2 record with Central Community College in third place with a 3-3 record and Southeast is fourth with a 0-4 record. McCook and Southeast square off on Friday before the Storm head to North Platte for the Saturday game.

Both games will be live streamed by Coaches Aid. A link to the broadcast can be found by going to www.npccknights.com and clicking on the “Live Video” link.

ESPN Radio 1410 to Become the Voice of Husker Nation in North Platte

ESPN-Radio-&-Hail-Varsity

Lincoln, Neb. – Hail Varsity owner Aaron Babcock announced Monday that North Platte’s KOOQ 1410 AM has signed an agreement to become the newest affiliate to carry the popular daily sports talk show.

KOOQ will begin carrying the Hail Varsity radio show Tuesday, February 18, becoming the third station to carry the show. The show, which originates from KLMS 1480 AM in Lincoln, can also be heard on KJSK 900 AM in Columbus.

The show is hosted by Chris Schmidt and David Gustafson and airs weekdays 4-6 p.m. It can also be heard on Saturdays in Omaha (KOZN 1620 AM) and Lincoln (KLMS 1480 AM). The Saturday program is hosted by Schmidt and Mark Kraynak.

“We are excited to introduce listeners in the North Platte area to the Hail Varsity Radio Show,” Babcock said. “Chris Schmidt and David Gustafson bring an incredible work ethic and commitment to the program. They continually line up entertaining guests from around the country.”

Some of the regularly scheduled guests include former Nebraska defensive coordinator Charlie McBride, former Husker and NFL veteran Ralph Brown, former Husker assistant football coach Jack Pierce and Gerry DiNardo of the Big Ten Network.

KOOQ Sports Director Robert Lovell said the show helps the station increase its local coverage.

“I have been looking for ways to make our programming more local or regional and Hail Varsity Radio is the perfect way to do that,” Lovell said. “It might be considered regional, but when you’re talking Husker sports in Nebraska that’s as local as it gets. In my opinion, the North Platte area will be getting an entertaining show with a knowledgeable host and unmatched Husker insight.”

KOOQ is a 5,000 watt station and has been an ESPN affiliate since 2007. The station is a part of a three-station cluster that includes KELN-FM Mix 97.1 and KNPQ-FM Q Country 107.3 and is owned by Eagle Radio.

Hail Varsity launched in 2012 and is the only Nebraska-owned Husker magazine and publishes 16 issues per year, including its annual football yearbook. For more information, visit HailVarsity.com.

NPCC Lady Knights Travel to Northwest Kansas Tech, Host Southeast to End Regular Season

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (13-12, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-2 NCCAC) have two games remaining on their regular season schedule before postseason play begins. On Wednesday, Feb. 19 the Lady Knights travel to Goodland, Kan. to face the Northwest Kansas Technical College Lady Mavericks (3-24) at 5 p.m. and then host the Southeast Community College Lady Storm (15-12, 1-2 Region IX Division II, 1-3 NCCAC) on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.

The Lady Knights first travel to face off with the Lady Mavericks on Wednesday. The Lady Mavericks and Lady Knights squared off on Nov. 22 in the Lady Knights sixth game of the year. In that contest, the Lady Knights emerged victorious with a 92-76 win behind 28 points and nine rebounds from April Stull and 26 points and 13 rebounds from DaVontaye Merritt. Courtney Widick was also in double-figures with 15 points.

On Saturday, the Lady Knights host Region IX Division II and Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) foe Southeast Community College at 2 p.m. The game has double importance for the Lady Knights as a victory would earn them the #1 seed and the opportunity to host the Region IX Division II Championship game on March 3 as well as earning them the out-right NCCAC Championship.

The game will be live streamed by Coaches Aid. A link to the broadcast can be found by going to www.npccknights.com and clicking on the “Live Video” link.

The Lady Knights won in Beatrice on Jan. 17 59-50 behind 22 points and 16 rebounds from Merritt and 16 points and 16 rebounds from Stull.

The current standings in Region IX Division II has North Platte leading the way with a 2-1 record, followed by Central Community College at 2-2 and Southeast at 1-2. A victory guarantees the Lady Knights the #1 seed and a bye to the championship game which they would host. A loss would have all three teams tied at 2-2 after everyone would have split.

In the NCCAC, North Platte leads with a 3-2 record while Southeast Community College is at 2-2, Central Community College is 3-3, and McCook Community College is 2-3. The Conference Championship would be the first in school history for the Lady Knights basketball team.
