Wall Leads East to All-Star Dunk Triumph

NBA All Star Game 2014 New OrleansNEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Eastern Conference trio of Toronto’s Terrence Ross, Indiana’s Paul George and Washington’s John Wall won the NBA All-Star Saturday night slam dunk contest.

Wall capped the triumph by leaping over a Wizards mascot while grabbing the ball from in front of the mascot’s head, then throwing down a double-pump, reverse, two-handed jam. The dunk eliminated Sacramento’s Ben McLemore, the last hope for the Western Conference. Wall was named “dunker of the night.”

For the first time, the dunk contest was a competition between conferences. Along with McLemore, the West was represented by Portland’s Damian Lillard, Golden State’s Harrison Barnes.

Earlier, San Antonio’s Marco Belinelli won the 3-point contest, the , the tandem of Portland’s Damian Lillard and Utah’s Trey Burke won the skills challenge, while Team Bosh, consisting of Miami’s Chris Bosh, former NBA star Dominique Wilkins and WNBA player Swin Cash, won the shooting stars event.

NPCC Knights Softball Sweep Colby to Open Season

Knights-SoftballColby, KS – The North Platte Community College softball team (2-0) traveled to Colby, Kan. Saturday and came away with a sweep of the Colby Community College Trojans (0-2) by winning the first game 11-9 and the second 19-13.

In the first game Katharine Savolt was 2-5 with one run and a homerun. Britlee Anderson was 2-4 with a run and Alexis Bryant was 2-3 with one run and a sacrifice. Soliel Atenza was 1-3 with a run and a walk. The winning pitcher was Shannon Lieber who earned the win in eight innings.

In the second game Siarra Velasquez was 3-5 with two runs. Atenza was 3-4 with a run, a walk and a stolen base. Lieber was 3-5 with three runs and a homerun. Bryant was 4-5 and Savolt was 3-5 with a homerun.

Lieber earned her second win of the season in as many tries and Savolt earned the save.

“It was a great team effort today,” said head coach Janelle Higgins. “Both games we battled back from being behind at some point in the game. The team never gave up! In game one we came back in extra innings to win. We showed a lot of heart, fight and determination today. Our sophomores really stepped up and our freshman did too. We had some errors throughout both games but that is expected with first games and the girls never gave up and battled hard all day!”

“Shannon (Lieber) threw really well,” said Higgins. “She took control of the plate today. Our hitting kept us alive, which showed all our hard work hitting and at CrossFit this winter paid off. We were able to play (roughly) six hours and still have gas in the tank.”

After getting their season underway, the Knights have two weeks of practice before returning to the diamond when they travel to Garden City, Kan. to play in the Garden City Tournament. The Knights will face Garden City Community College, Otero Junior College, Pratt Community College and Lamar Community College.

Ice Score Five In Second To Sweep Storm

tcstormINDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indiana Ice (28-7-6) controlled the second period, scoring five goals, and completed a sweep of the Tri-City Storm (17-25-2) with a 6-0 win at the Pan Am Arena on Saturday night.

Storm goaltender Jacob Johansson made 22 saves in the loss, while Indiana’s Jason Pawloski stopped all 15 shots that came his way to pick up his third shutout of the season.

Tri-City outshot Indiana 8-7 in the first period, but trailed 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes. The Ice got an early goal from Patrick Newell to take the lead, but things were otherwise even at the conclusion of the first frame.

But Indiana opened things up in the middle period, scoring five times on 20 shots to take control of the game.

The Ice got goals from Dwyer Tschantz, Vince Pedrie, Brian Pinho and Ryan Mantha in the second period.

Pinho found the back of the net twice, and secured the first star of the game for himself.

Two of the Ice goals were scored on the power play, and Indiana finished the contest going 2-for-9 on the man-advantage. Tri-City was unsuccessful on five power play attempts.

The Storm pulled Johansson during the second period in favor of backup Hayden Lavigne, but head coach Jim Hulton elected to go back to his starter at the beginning of the third.

In the final period, Johansson held Indiana scoreless, turning aside 11 shots.

The Storm will now head to Chicago to conclude their weekend with an afternoon battle against the Steel on Sunday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.

Tri-City will return home to the Viaero Event Center to face Lincoln on Feb. 22 at 7:05 p.m.

Belinelli Wins All-Star 3-Point Contest

NBA All Star Game 2014 New OrleansNEW ORLEANS (AP) — San Antonio’s Marco Belinelli won the 3-point contest at NBA All-Star Saturday night.

The Italian, who previously played for New Orleans, needed to win a tiebreaker round in the final to beat Bradley Beal.

The Washington All-Star had made his final six shots, including two “money balls” worth two points each, to tie Belinelli’s initial final-round score of 19.

Belinelli then racked up an event-high score of 24 for the win.

There were four shooters from each conference.

Belinelli had a score of 19 to win the West, beating Damian Lillard’s 18. Beal had a score of 21 to win the East, easily eclipsing defending champ Kyrie Irving’s total of 16.

Earlier, the tandem of Portland’s Damian Lillard and Utah’s Trey Burke won the skills challenge, while Team Bosh, consisting of Miami’s Chris Bosh, former NBA star Dominique Wilkins and WNBA player Swin Cash, won the shooting stars event.

No. 13 NPCC Knights Earn Victory Over Western Nebraska

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 13 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (23-4, 11-4 South Sub-Region) earned victory Saturday afternoon in McDonald-Belton Gymnasium as they defeated the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars (15-12, 6-7 South Sub-Region) 80-69 in a Region IX contest behind five players in double figures.

The Knights came out swinging early in the first half used an 11-0 run in the first half to take their largest lead of the first half into intermission at 41-27 behind 12 points from Tre’Vaun Hymer off the bench and 11 points from Ethan Montalvo as the Knights shot 54 percent from the field and only turned the ball over four times.

In the second half the Cougars used a “box and one” on Montalvo allowing several other players to get going offensively for the Knights. The Knights held the Cougars to 39 percent shooting in the game and the Knights out-rebounded the Cougars 42-32.

Hymer led all scorers as he finished with 19 points. Sophomore Tim Simmons scored 10 points in the second half and finished with 18. Aireon Porter recorded another double-double as he finished with 17 points and 13 rebounds after having 10 rebounds at half. Cameron Williams was the fifth man in double-figures as he finished with 11 points and Montalvo was held scoreless in the second half to also finish with 11 points.

“I just wanted to take advantage of the opportunities I had,” said Hymer. “It was a good team win with five us in double-figures.”

Derrick Bowers led the Cougars with 16 points while Tyler Crosbie finished with 15 points and Youshoupha Kane and Brandon Morney each had 11.

“It was a good team win and we had a lot of guys step up and make plays,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “Tre’Vaun had another big game tonight and it is always good to have five guys in double-figures.”

Next week marks the end of the regular season as the Knights host Laramie County Community College (16-10, 7-6 South Sub-Region) on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and Southeast Community College (19-9, 0-4 NCCAC) on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. The Knights fell at Laramie County 78-82 and defeated Southeast 83-68.

Winning Streak Over for Former Nebraska Star Burroughs After 69 Matches

Jordan Burroughs Nebraska Huskers Wrestling USAU.S. Olympic wrestling champion Jordan Burroughs was beaten in the quarterfinals of a match in Turkey on Saturday, snapping his 69-match international winning streak.

Burroughs fell to former Missouri star Nick Marable on criteria, 4-4, in 74-kilogram weight class of the Yasar Dogu International event in Istanbul.

Marable scored a pair of second-period takedowns and later withstood a pushout and takedown for the upset win.

It was the first senior-level international defeat for Burroughs, a former Nebraska standout who the gold medal at the London Games in 2012.

Burroughs also won world titles in 2011 and 2013. But this was the first meet for Burroughs since the world championships last season.

SKIER HURT: Russian skicross racer Maria Komissarova sustained a broken and dislocated spine in Olympic training Saturday and was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. The Russian freestyle federation said in a statement that the 23-year-old skier would not compete next week after having emergency surgery.

SWEDEN WINS FIRST GOLD: Charlotte Kalla erased a massive deficit of 25 seconds on the last leg of a women’s cross-country relay to win the race. It’s the first gold medal of the Sochi Olympics for Sweden.

DOWN TO THE THOUSANDTH: Poland won its first gold medal in Sochi thanks to three thousandths of a second. Zbigniew Brodka won the men’s 1,500 meters, the tightest finish in that race in Olympic history.

MIDWAY POINT: The Olympics was reaching its midpoint Saturday with seven gold medals to be awarded. Switzerland picked up two golds and a silver in six competitions Friday to be the biggest medal mover of the day. Right behind it was Belarus, which won two golds and a bronze.

Drummond’s 30-25 Wins Rising Stars Challenge

NBA All Star Game 2014 New OrleansNEW ORLEANS (AP) — Andre Drummond had 30 points and a Rising Stars Challenge-record 25 rebounds, leading Team Hill to a 142-136 victory over Team Webber on Friday night.

Besides an impressive tally of dunks and rebounds, Drummond even managed to make his free throws while winning MVP honors. A 41 percent shooter during the regular season, the Detroit forward went 6 for 8, including a pair with 29 seconds left after chasing down Bradley Beal’s missed free throw to give his team a five-point lead.

Cleveland’s Dion Waiters had 31 points, mostly coming during a 1-on-1 duel with New York’s Tim Hardaway Jr. in the second half. Beal finished with 21 for Team Hill, picked by former NBA star Grant Hill.

Hardaway scored 36 points and made seven 3-pointers for fellow former Michigan star Chris Webber’s squad. Philadelphia rookie Michael Carter-Williams had 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
