Indiana Voted Big Ten Baseball Preseason Favorite, Nebraska Second

husker baseballRosemont, Ill. – Indiana was the unanimous choice by the conference coaches as the preseason favorite to claim the Big Ten Championship, it was announced on Wednesday. The conference’s coaches voted on the top six teams and also selected three players from their own squads to a Players to Watch list. The Hoosiers were followed in the preseason poll by No. 2 Nebraska, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Michigan State, with Illinois and Michigan tied for fifth.

The Hoosiers return seven of their nine All-Big Ten honorees from last year’s College World Series squad, including third baseman Dustin DeMuth, catcher Kyle Schwarber and first baseman Sam Travis, who were named Big Ten Players to Watch. The trio each earned Preseason All-America accolades from various outlets, with Schwarber being a unanimous pick from Baseball America, College Baseball Newspaper and the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

Nebraska was picked to finish second after advancing to the Big Ten Tournament Championship Game last season. Starting pitcher Aaron Bummer, second baseman Pat Kelly and outfielder/designated hitter Michael Pritchard were named Big Ten Players to Watch. Kelly was a 2013 All-Big Ten first-team pick and Pritchard was a second-team choice.

Ohio State welcomes back 13 letterwinners from last season, while also getting back Big Ten Player to Watch choice Josh Dezse, who missed last season due to injury. Other Players to Watch for the Buckeyes include Preseason All-America reliever Trace Dempsey, who was named to the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, and outfielder Patrick Porter.

Michigan State is coming off its fourth straight 30-win season after earning 33 victories last season. Outfielder Jimmy Pickens, who was a second-team All-Conference choice a year ago, outfielder Cam Gibson, who earned a spot on the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team, and pitcher Justin Alleman were tabbed Big Ten Players to Watch.

Illinois advanced to NCAA Tournament play a season ago, finishing the year with 35 victories. Starting pitcher Kevin Duchene, a 2013 All-Conference second-team pick, and reliever Ronnie Muck are two of the Illini’s 15 returning pitchers, while first baseman David Kerian was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2013. The three were named Players to Watch.

Michigan was part of the Big Ten Tournament field in 2013 and returns six of its eight position players from last year’s team. Each of the Wolverines three Big Ten Players to Watch this season, infielder/reliever Jacob Cronenworth, starting pitcher Evan Hill and shortstop Travis Maezes, were named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman Team a season ago.

Royals, Holland Agree on $4.675 Million Contract

Greg Holland Kansas City RoyalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and All-Star closer Greg Holland agreed on a $4.675 million contract Wednesday, which means all of Kansas City’s arbitration-eligible players are signed ahead of spring training.

Pitchers and catchers are due to report to Surprise, Ariz., on Friday.

Holland asked for $5.2 million after going 2-1 with a 1.21 ERA and 47 saves last season, while the Royals offered $4.1 million. They settled on a figure that represents a big bump from the $539,000 he made in 2013, and includes a $50,000 bonus for making the All-Star game.

The deal means that Royals general manager Dayton Moore still has never gone to arbitration with a player. The last Royals player to go to arbitration was outfielder Emil Brown in 2006, the offseason prior to Moore’s hiring as GM.

5 Things to Know About the Sochi Olympics

Sochi Olympics 2014SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Fast five, Wednesday edition: Things you’ll want to know about the 2014 Winter Olympics.

___

QUICK IN NET: Jonathan Quick will start in goal in Team USA’s opening game against Slovakia on Thursday. Coach Dan Bylsma made the decision on Wednesday. Bylsma isn’t saying who will start for the team’s other preliminary games, including a highly anticipated matchup against Russia on Saturday. Quick got the nod for the opener over Jimmy Howard and Ryan Miller.

___

SHARED GOLD: Tina Maze of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland were both declared winners when they finished with identical times in the women’s downhill, finishing the 1.69-mile (2.7-kilometer) Rosa Khutor course in 1 minute, 41.57 seconds. Lara Gut of Switzerland won bronze after finishing 0.10 seconds slower.

___

REMEMBERING NODAR: Luge officials held a moment of silence on the fourth anniversary of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili’s death. Kumaritashvili died on Feb. 12, 2010 in a training crash just before the start of the Vancouver Games. Olympic officials say they are working with the Georgian government to build “a lasting memorial” in his honor.

___

OLYMPIC PINTERESTS: Sochi organizers and the IOC say a pin shortage in Olympic Park should be over soon. The Russian mint produced 1 million official pins for the games, but the popular souvenirs were previously only available in stores elsewhere in Russia.

___

PAIRS FIGURE SKATING, WOMEN’S SNOWBOARD: Six gold medals were up for grabs Wednesday, including in pairs figure skating and the women’s snowboard halfpipe. Norway was the biggest medal mover of Tuesday, with two golds and two silvers in eight events. Germany also won two golds.

Olympic Roundup – Maze, Gisin Win Gold in Women’s Olympic Downhill

Sochi Olympics 2014SOCHI, Russia (AP) — The gold market got a rare boost at the Sochi Olympics on Wednesday in the women’s downhill.

Tina Maze of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland were both declared winners when they finished with identical times. Lara Gut of Switzerland won the bronze.

On a day when temperatures approached 50 degrees (10 C), Maze and Gisin completed the 1.69-mile (2.7-kilometer) Rosa Khutor course in 1 minute, 41.57 seconds. Gut was 0.10 seconds back.

Two favorites, Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany and Julia Mancuso of the U.S., were out of contention. Hoefl-Riesch, eyeing a record-equaling fourth Olympic Alpine gold, finished 13th. Mancuso was eighth.

“It’s actually crazy that it comes down to one-hundredths (of a second) and there is not one-thousandths as a tiebreaker,” Mancsuo said.

The last tie in Olympic skiing happened in men’s super-G at the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Didier Cuche of Switzerland and Hans Knauss of Austria both got silver behind winner Hermann Maier. Twice, two women have tied for second in Olympic giant slaloms.

Four years ago in the Vancouver downhill, Gisin crashed off the final jump, took a long slide to the finish line, hit a bank of snow and flew in the air. This was Gisin’s third downhill victory, but two have been in ties. Though Maze won two silvers in Vancouver, Gisin earned her first major medal on Wednesday.

“It’s even more interesting because it’s not a usual thing,” Maze said. “It’s something special.”

Five other sports were awarding gold medals on Day 6 of the Olympics: figure skating pairs, luge, Nordic combined, snowboarding and speedskating.

In an early women’s hockey game, Finland beat Switzerland 4-3, with Jenni Hiirikoski scoring her second goal of the game with 2:22 left in overtime. Switzerland was winless in group play. Both teams will play in the quarterfinals.

The Knights started off the game with great defensive intensity as the Indians were only able to score 36 points in the half to the Knights 41. Cameron Williams dominated in the early going as he scored 16 points in the opening half by repeatedly getting to the basket. After being held to only three points through much of the first half, Knight’s leading scorer Ethan Montalvo hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Knights the five point lead at intermission.

In the second half, both teams found their offensive stride as the teams would battle back and forth with five ties and 15 lead changes in the second half. Late in regulation, the Indians were ahead by five points before a drive by Montalvo and dump to Aireon Porter for the basket and foul cut the Indians lead to two.

After a stop on the defensive end, Montalvo drove to the hoop and was fouled. With seven seconds remaining, he calmly sank both free throws to tie the game. McCook was unable to get a shot off and the game headed to overtime.

In the first two minutes of overtime, the two teams continued to battle back and forth before fast break opportunities allowed the Indians to earn their largest lead of the game at 91-102. The Knights would then out-score the Indians 7-4 but it was not enough.

npcc-knightsMcCook – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (13-11, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-2 NCCAC) fell to the McCook Community College Lady Indians (5-20, 2-3 NCCAC) in overtime in the second overtime game of the match-up this season by a score 72-75 after being tied at 64 in regulation.

The Lady Knights and Lady Indians fought back and forth throughout the entire game as there were eight ties and 16 lead changes. The Lady Indians held the largest lead of the game at nine points with a score of 40-49.

The Lady Knights entered the final minute of regulation down by four points. Jordan Dickerson hit a 3-pointer to cut the McCook lead to one point, but then was forced to foul, ending her night with her fifth foul of the game. After the Lady Indians hit both free throws to stretch the lead to three points, Aliyah Brown hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with a few ticks remaining. The Lady Indians attempt at the buzzer was unsuccessful and the game went into overtime.

In overtime, Aliyah Brown would continue her hot shooting as she knocked down a 3-pointer and a shot with her toe on the line to give the Knights a lead. McCook would fight back and outscore the Lady Knights down the stretch and outscore them in overtime 8-11 to earn the victory.

Nebraska is Shooting for a Postseason Appearance

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska goes into the last month of the regular season looking to enhance its chance to play in a postseason tournament.

The Cornhuskers play five of its last eight games at home — where they are 10-1 — and only two of its remaining opponents have winning records in Big Ten play.

Coach Tim Miles said Tuesday that his team set a preseason goal of going at least .500 in the Big Ten. That would be nine wins. The Cornhuskers (12-10, 4-6) haven’t won more than eight conference games since 1998-99.

The Huskers go for Big Ten win No. 5 on Wednesday night when Illinois (14-10, 3-8) visits Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Miles said the NIT is a good possibility for the Huskers if they finish strong.
