Northeastern erases 25-point second half deficit, defeats NPCC Knights 73-72
North Platte – The Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen ended the North Platte Community College Knights winning streak at seven, defeating the Knights 73-72 on Wednesday night at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium.
The Knights started out the game with a 16-2 lead. They maintained their lead throughout the first half, leading by 18 at halftime 47-29.
The Knights extended their lead at the beginning of the second half, starting out on a 10-3 run for their biggest lead at 57-32.
The Plainsmen began to chip away at the Knights lead on a barrage of three pointers. The Plainsmen made eight three-pointers in the second half and a total of 10 for the game. Kei’shon Parker and Garrett Baggett each had five three-pointers.
The Plainsmen took their only lead on a three-pointer by Parker in the last minute of play.
The Knights could not connect in the last few seconds of the game to fall for the first time this season.
The Knights, now 7-1 and 0-1 in the Region IX South Sub-Region were led in scoring by Mike Amius, who finished with 20 points. Diontae Champion finished with 18 points and Samuel Kearns had 15 points. Amius had eight rebounds to lead the Knights.
Parker finished with a game high 24 points and Baggett ended with 22 to pace the Plainsmen, who are now 8-3 overall and 2-1 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Parker and Badgett were the only two Plainsmen in double figures for the Plainsmen.
The Knights go on the road to face the 15th ranked Lamar Community College Lopes on Saturday, December 10. Tip-off is set for 8 PM CST.
NPCC Lady Knights basketball team defeats Northeastern 76-59
North Platte – The North Platte Community College added to the number in the win column by defeating the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen 76-59 on Wednesday night.
The Lady Knights jumped out to a 16-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the first 4 the Knights shot seven of 16 from the field for 43.8 percent while holding the Plainswomen to 29.4 percent.
The Plainsmen came back in the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run to take the lead at 19-16. The lead changed hands twice in the quarter, with the Plainswomen leading at halftime 31-26.
The Lady Knights came out firing in the third quarter, starting off on a 19-4 run to lead by 10, 45-35. They outscored the Plainswomen 25-8 in the third quarter, shooting 10 for 24 including three three-pointers to take a 51-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Knights outscored the Plainsmen 25-20 to seal the win.
The Lady Knights are now 4-7 on the season. Four Lady Knights finished the game in double figures led by Jessica Lovitt, who scored a career high 20 points to lead all scorers. Aljahnay Duncan and Allison Tichy each scored14 points and Thomesha Wilson added 13 points. Lovitt and Wilson each recorded a double-double by grabbing 14 and 13 rebounds respectively.
The Plainswomen are now 6-6 on the season. They were led by Jennae Fieldgrove with 18 points. Nicole Muragarren Clavier added 15 points and Katie Diakaby finished with 12 points. Diakaby also had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
The Lady Knights are in action on Friday, when they host York College Junior Varsity on “Pink Out” night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 PM.

NPCC Basketball Teams to Host Northeastern JC
North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights and Knights basketball teams will host Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen and Plainsmen on Wednesday, Dec 7 at the McDonald Belton Gymnasium.
The Lady Knights are 3-7 on the season. Thomesha Wilson leads the Lady Knights in scoring at 13.9 points per game. Allison Tichy is averaging 9.1 ppg. Wilson also has 7.3 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Knights.
The Plainswomen, a Region IX Division I team, are 6-5 on the season and are led in scoring by Nicole Mauragarren Clavier with a 12.1 ppg average. Mauragarren Clavier also leads the Plainswomen in rebounding at 6.1 rpg. Katie Diakhaby is second on the team in scoring and rebounding at 9.1 ppg and 6.0 rpg.
The men’s game will be a Region IX South Sub-Region matchup.
The Knights are 7-0 on the season and have not played a South Sub-Region opponent. The Knights have five players averaging in double figures led by Diontae Champion with a 17.7 ppg average. Mike Amius is next at 16.0 ppg. Godfrey Rolle follows at 14.6 ppg. Jack Williams and David Niklasson are averaging 12.3 and 12.1 ppg respectively. Amius leads the Knights in rebounding at 5.7 rpg.
The Plainsmen are 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in Region IX South Sub-Region play. Garret Baggert is one of three Plainsmen in double figures scoring, leading at 12.1 ppg. Axel Mpoyo is second on the team at 11.1 ppg and Jalonni McCovery is the third Plainsmen to average in double figures at 10.0 ppg. Ron Hall leads the Plainsmen in rebounding at 4.6 rpg.
Tip-off for the women’s game is scheduled for 5:30 PM CST, with the men’s game to follow.

NPCC Lady Knights volleyball signs Shaylee Johnson

North Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights volleyball team has added Shaylee Johnson from Fleming, Colo., to its 2017 recruiting class.
Johnson, a 6’0 middle blocker, played for the Fleming High School Lady Wildcats, coached by Doug Kamery. The Wildcats finished the 2016 season with a record of 29-2 and the state champion in Class 1A.
Johnson was named to the first team CHSAA 1A All-State team and was named 1A Player of the Year, her senior season. During her senior season, Johnson recorded 251 kills with a .279 kill efficiency. She also had 102 total blocks and had 275 defensive digs.
Johnson played varsity for four seasons having 593 kills, 261 total blocks and 497 defensive digs.
“’We are excited about Shaylee because she does such a good job in the middle.” Lady Knight Head Coach Alexa McCall said, “She has a big presence and is going to be able to come in and do some great things. She comes from a very successful program and is not afraid to compete”
Fleming High School product Megan Chintala was an All-Region IX performer for the Lady Knights this past season.
Johnson is the third recruit for the Lady Knights for the 2017 season. The others are Jordynn Simpson from North Platte, and Taylin McNair from Imperial.
NPCC Lady Knights Basketball splits pair on the road
The North Platte Community College Lady Knights defeated the Midland University Junior Varsity Lady Warriors 67-63 Friday night.
The Lady Knights held a 37-30 lead at halftime.
The Lady Knights improve to 3-6 on the season.
On Saturday, North Platte Community College fell to the Doane College Lady Tigers Junior Varsity 69-68.
“We got down early in the first quarter, but played tight with them the rest of the game” Lady Knight Head Coach Richard Thurin said, “We had a good shot at the buzzer, but it fell short.”
Thomesha Wilson led the Lady Knights with 20 points and Jessica Lovitt added 15 points.
The Lady Knights, now 3-7, will play the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen at the McDonald-Belton Gymnasium on Wednesday, December 7. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
