Seattle Erupts During Seahawks Super Bowl Parade

Super Bowl 48SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Seahawks coaches, players and staff say they wouldn’t have been able to win the Super Bowl without the help of their fans — the 12th Man.

The team thanked its loyal followers on Wednesday at a ceremony at CenturyLink Field, capping a day of boisterous celebration and parade that drew an estimated 700,000 revelers to Seattle.

Players were introduced by the order of their jersey numbers and ended with No. 3, quarterback Russell Wilson, who walked onto the field pumping the Lombardi Trophy in the air to thunderous applause.

Coach Pete Carroll led the crowd in a “Seahawks, Seahawks” chant and said the team will do something special again.

Analysts Say They Like Nebraska’s Lineman Recruits

nebraska_helmetLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini is set to sign a football recruiting class of 25 players on Wednesday.

Recruiting analysts say the strengths of the Cornhuskers’ class are the offensive and defensive lines. D.J. Foster out of Lincoln Southeast, Tanner Farmer of Highland, Ill., and Nick Gates of Las Vegas are the most heralded of the offensive linemen. Joe Keels, a transfer from Highland Community College in Kansas, is the best of the defensive linemen.

Defensive line recruit Blake McClain of Jacksonville, Fla., said Tuesday he was wavering on his verbal commitment to Nebraska. The Huskers are awaiting decisions from offensive lineman Kenyon Frison of West Valley City, Utah, and receiver DeSean Blair of Jacksonville.

Pelini will discuss the recruits at an afternoon news conference.

IOC Urged Not to Pay Sports to Attend Olympics

olympicsSOCHI, Russia (AP) — The IOC has been urged not to pay sports to attend the Olympics during talks on its relations with North American professional leagues.

New Zealand member Barry Maister says “we are on a slippery slope if we start paying people to come to the Olympic Games.” Maister says such payments would be “fundamentally against the Olympic movement.”

The NHL agreed a 16-day pause freeing players for Sochi after long negotiations with the International Ice Hockey Federation.

MLB’s refusal of a midseason break hampers baseball’s attempts to regain Olympic status.

IOC members opened wide-ranging debate Wednesday on future Olympic strategy. They were asked to consider “financial compensation and returns for the stakeholders for their involvement.”

Jean Claude-Killy of France says any proposal to pay Olympic athletes would be “anathema.”

Montalvo Nets 1,000th Career Point, No. 3 NPCC Knights Fall at No. 15 Northeastern Junior College

npcc-knightsSterling, CO – The No. 3 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team’s (21-2, 9-2 South Sub-Region, 4-0 NCCAC) fell Tuesday night to the No. 15 Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen (22-2, 9-2 South Sub-Region) by a score of 66-70 despite 26 points from Ethan Montalvo as he passed the 1,000th career point total.

The Knights started the game struggling to score as it would be over six minutes before the Knights would get on the board. A strong defensive effort held the Plainsmen to only eight points during the stretch to keep the Knights in the game. Two free throws from Montalvo finally broke the Knights scoring drought.

Slowly through the first half the Knights would chip away and find their offensive rhythm while holding the Plainsmen at bay. The Knights would even the game at 32 apiece on two free throws from Cameron Williams before a steal and put-back by Kenyon Gist would give the Knights a 34-32 lead at break. Montalvo led the Knights with 14 points while Dual Mayot had 13 for the Plainsmen.

In the second half the game would swing back and forth as both teams were able to keep the other team on its heels. Late in the game, Northeastern was able to knock down two free throws and get a stop to stretch their lead to four that the Knights could not overcome in the final minute.

The Knights were led by Montalvo’s 26 points that included 10 of 10 from the free throw line. Tim Simmons finished with 14 points, 12 in the second half. Cameron Williams was the only other Knight in double-figures with 10.

With his 26 points, Ethan Montalvo became the 13th Knight ever to score 1,000 career points. He currently sits at 1,005 points which is 13th on the Knights All-Time scoring list after passing Tod McKeone and All-American Eugene Bain. In 12th place is Kevin Bromley with 1,040 career points. All-American Joseph Ragland is the Knights All-Time leading scorer with 1,286 career points.

Mayot led the Plainsmen with 19 points and Bronson Moton was the only other in double-figures with 13. The Plainsmen had seven players score at least five points while the Knights only had four.

“Give Northeastern a ton of credit, they played a heck of a ballgame,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “We have to regroup and put this behind us during the next two days of practice before we travel to Lamar.”

The Knights then travel to Lamar, Colo. to face the Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes (7-16, 3-6 South Sub-Region) on Friday Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. CST. The Knights defeated the Runnin’ Lopes at home on Dec. 7 by a score of 86-56 behind 17 points from Marco Pascolo and a double-double from Jake Maslo on 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Next week the Knights travel to McCook Community College (16-7, 6-4 South Sub-Region, 2-2 NCCAC) on Tuesday, February 11 to face the Indians at 7:30 p.m. The Knights then return home for a Friday-Saturday double-header as they host the Eastern Wyoming Lancers (9-12, 1-8 South Sub-Region) on Friday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. and the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars (14-9, 5-4 South Sub-Region) on Saturday, February 15 at 3 p.m.

NPCC Lady Knights Knock Off Plainswomen

npcc-knightsSterling, CO – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (13-9, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-1 NCCAC) traveled to Sterling, Colo. despite the snow and knocked off the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen (10-12) Tuesday night 72-70 on the strength of an 18-0 run at the end of the first half.

The Lady Knights started out the game slow and got down early to the Plainswomen by as much as 26-11. Jordan Dickerson was the spark that the Lady Knights needed and went on an 18-0 run and out-scored the Plainswomen 24-6 down the stretch of the first half to earn the 35-32 lead at the break. DaVontaye Merritt led all scorers in the first half with seven points.

In the second half the game was back and forth as neither team could gain control of the game as the teams traded baskets and runs. Late in the half with a little over a minute and a half Dickerson went to the line and hit two free throws to give the Lady Knights a 72-70 margin that turned out to be the final margin.

Both teams had opportunities to tie the game for the Plainswomen and to stretch their lead for the Lady Knights but both were unsuccessful as no more points were scored.

Dickerson led the way for the Lady Knights as she finished with 19 points. DaVontaye Merritt (15 points), April Stull (12 points) and Stephanie Casteel (11 points) were all in double-figures for the Lady Knights.

“We played some zone defense which turned out to be big,” said head coach Richard Thurin “as was the 18-0 before half. It was great to see four girls in double-figures.”

Meg Pritchard led the Plainswomen with 16 points and Brooke Blair was the only other in double-figures with 12.

The Lady Knights travel to Lamar, Colo. to take on the Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes (12-8) on Friday Feb.7 at 6:30 p.m. CST. The Lady Knights knocked off the Runnin’ Lopes 87-84 at home earlier this year behind 26 points and 11 from DaVontaye Merritt. Freshman April Stull also had a double-double as she finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Next week the Lady Knights travel to McCook Community College (5-18, 1-3 NCCAC) to face the Lady Indians on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. before returning home on Friday, Feb. 14 to face the Eastern Wyoming College Lady Lancers (12-10) at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Knights finish out the week by hosting the Nebraska Wesleyan University JV on Sunday, February 16 at 2 p.m.

Boxing, MMA Meet to Support Head Injury Research

MMA Boxing Head InjuryWASHINGTON (AP) — Bringing together the rival bodies of boxing and mixed martial arts is no small feat. But there is one common cause on which they can agree – the need for brain trauma research.

On Tuesday, two former boxers, Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Harry Reid (D-Nev.), welcomed representatives of the world’s two premiere boxing and four mixed martial arts organizations to announce support for a study to understand the effects of repeated blows to the head.

The combat sports have joined forces to commit $600,000 to the Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas.

“It’s a rare occasion when Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Boxing are in the same room together,” McCain said. “These athletes are here in support of their fellow athletes because they’ve seen the results. If we don’t do this, I’m afraid that support for these incredible, entertaining sports will wane on the part of the American people.”

A former chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission, Reid has deep roots in boxing. He said he judged “hundreds” of matches, including one eye-opening bout late in the career of former great Sugar Ray Robinson, who accumulated 200 professional fights in 25 years.

“He fought too long,” Reid said.

Seated behind Reid as he spoke was former middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins, still active at age 49, and most high-profile fighter involved in the study. He is one of nearly 400 active and retired fighters who have enrolled.

“You want to know the risks,” Hopkins said. “God forbid if I was diagnosed with something 10-15 years ago, then I got a choice to make. Do I want to enjoy the rest of my life with my kids or do I want to continue to fight for myself and to walk around the rest of my life as a vegetable?”

This much has been determined: Professional fighters have a higher risk of developing long-term conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), depression, and other neurological and neuropsychiatric problems.

But there currently is no way to determine if a fighter has sustained cumulative brain damage from head trauma. The Cleveland Clinic is working to identify risk factors.

“What we want to know is, what is the very first change that occurs,” said Jeffrey Cummings, director of the Lou Ruvo Center. “Can you detect that in an athlete so you can tell that athlete that they are in the beginning of the process. Second, are there procedures, are there risk factors, are there vulnerabilities, so that we would know which athletes to monitor.”

Former Bellator MMA lightweight champion Michael Chandler spoke eloquently, admitting that as a young fighter he didn’t think about consequences, but he appreciated that others were looking out for his long-term well-being so that he could “play football in the front yard with my children.”

Elway Knows the Pain Will Linger for Broncos, Fans

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Three times during his Hall of Fame playing career, John Elway slogged through the rubble of a Super Bowl landslide.

Forty-eight hours after Denver’s devastating 43-8 defeat by Seattle in this year’s Super Bowl, the Broncos’ boss was asked how long it took him to get over those big blowouts.

Said Elway: “I’m not over them yet.”

Elway understands Broncos fans are struggling to come to grips with just how the highest-scoring team in league history self-destructed and five-time MVP Peyton Manning managed but a single touchdown throw against the Seahawks.
