OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Omaha Henry Doorly Zoo’s latest star — Peyton the Penguin, named for Denver Broncos’ quarterback Peyton Manning — is taking to social media for Sunday’s Super Bowl game.

The newborn rockhopper penguin got his name after the city and the Nebraska Tourism Commission took note of Manning’s repeated use of “Omaha” at the line of scrimmage. Fans can expect to hear him yell, “Omaha! Omaha!” just as often when the Broncos face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in the championship Super Bowl matchup.

Now, Manning’s namesake penguin has become “a bit of a celebrity,” zoo director Dennis Pate says.

Zoo officials say Peyton the Penguin is eagerly awaiting the big game on Sunday and will be posting his thoughts and comments about it over the next several days.

No. 5 NPCC Knights Knock off Central Community College in NCCAC Battle

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The No. 5 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team’s (21-1, 9-1 South Sub-Region, 4-0 NCCAC) found a way to win Saturday afternoon at McDonald-Belton Gymnasium as they knocked off the Central Community College Raiders (18-6, 2-3 NCCAC) in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference battle 71-59.

The Knights and Raiders both struggled offensively in the first half as the half ended in a very low scoring Knight advantage at 27-25. Aireon Porter and Marco Pascolo both led the way for the Knights with seven points apiece while Tyron Criswell scored eight for the Raiders. The first half was marred with fouls as four Knights had two fouls while one Raider had three fouls and three players had two. However, the Knights never trailed in the first half.

In the second half both teams found their rhythm offensively as both teams traded baskets. In the second half, there were six lead changes and four ties. The Knights trailed by as many as eight points, but a five point play brought the Knights right back.

“I am very excited that our guys responded to adversity tonight,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “Central is a very talented team and we were fortunate to emerge victorious.”

Pascolo was able to knife his way through the Raiders zone and make the basket as a foul was a called. A technical foul was then issued to the Raiders and Ethan Montalvo converted two free throws followed by Pascolo making his free throw to cut the deficit to three.

The Knights and Raiders would battle back and forth in a stretch that included a missed 3-pointer by Cameron Williams in which he followed his own miss and was fouled in the process to give the Knights a three point lead.

Late in the game the two teams were tied when Aireon Porter converted a lay-up and was fouled off an assist from Montalvo. Cameron Williams was then fouled and converted both to give the Knights a five point lead.

Montalvo converted seven of eight free throws down the stretch to give the Knights the 12 point victory. The Raiders did not score in the last two minutes and thirty seconds.

The Knights were led by a double-double from Aireon Porter who finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Ethan Montalvo scored the most points for the Knights as he finished with 17 on 11 of 13 shooting from the foul line. Marco Pascolo scored 15 and Cameron Williams finished with 11 as the other Knights in double-figures.

“I had to give my all because I missed the last game,” said Porter. “I had to step up for my team.”

The Raiders played only two in double-figures as Tyron Criswell finished with a game-high 21 points and a team-high eight rebounds while John Ruffin scored 13.

The victory gives the Knights a 4-0 record in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference while dropping the Raiders to 2-3. McCook Community College improved to 2-2 last night with a victory over Central while Southeast remains at 0-3.

Next week the Knights take to the road to face the No. 19 Northeastern Junior College Plainsmen (19-2, 6-2 South Sub-Region) on Tuesday Feb. 4 at 8:30 p.m. CST and the Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes (6-16, 2-6 South Sub-Region) on Friday Feb. 7 at 8:30 p.m. CST. The Knights defeated the Plainsmen 69-60 on Dec. 11 when North Platte was ranked No. 8 and the Plainsmen were No. 17. The Knights also defeated the Runnin’ Lopes at home on Dec. 7 by a score of 86-56.

Manning Extends Record with 5th AP NFL MVP

Peyton-Manning-Denver-BroncNEW YORK (AP) — Peyton Manning has won his fifth Associated Press NFL Most Valuable Player award in a landslide.

The Denver Broncos’ record-setting quarterback, who threw for 55 touchdowns and 5,477 yards in leading the Broncos to the AFC’s best record, earned 49 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league. New England quarterback Tom Brady got the other vote in balloting announced Saturday night.

Manning won his other MVPs with Indianapolis in 2003, ’04, ’08 and ’09. He also was the runner-up last season to Adrian Peterson.

No one else has won more than three NFL MVP awards.

Manning still trails several Hall of Famers for total MVPs in their sport. Wayne Gretzky won nine NHL MVPs, Barry Bonds owns seven in baseball, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar won six in the NBA.

Manning has also won his second Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

The Denver quarterback shattered the league record by throwing for 55 touchdowns. He also set a mark with 5,477 yards passing in leading the Broncos to a 13-3 record, best in the AFC. They play Seattle on Sunday in the Super Bowl.

Broncos executive John Elway accepted the award on Manning’s behalf.

Manning received 33 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the league in balloting announced Saturday night. He also won the award in 2004 and was runner-up last year to Adrian Peterson.

This time, running back LeSean McCoy of Philadelphia was second with 10 votes, followed by Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles with four.

Huskers Outlast Illinois, 22-13

UNLChampaign, Ill. – No. 8 Nebraska (11-1, 5-1 Big Ten) built a 15-4 lead at the halfway point and held off an Illinois comeback in a 22-13 triumph at Huff Hall on Saturday evening.

The dual started at 149 pounds, where junior Jake Sueflohn came from behind to defeat Illinois’ Caleb Ervin. Sueflohn, the fifth-ranked wrestler by InterMat, gave up a first-period takedown before earning an escape later in the opening stanza. In the second period, Ervin earned an escape after starting in the down position. Entering the third period trailing 3-1, Sueflohn earned a takedown and tacked on a point for riding time in a 4-3 decision.

No. 1 James Green (157) continued his undefeated season in the second bout of the dual, notching a 10-3 decision over No. 13 Zac Brunson. Green managed four takedowns in the match and added an additional point for riding time. The two-time All-American picked up his 25th win of the season.

At 197 pounds, Caleb Kolb battled No. 4 Mario Gonzalez to extra time before falling by a 3-2 margin. After a scoreless first period, the pair traded escapes in the second and third periods. After a scoreless minute of sudden victory, Gonzalez earned a reversal in the first 30-second overtime period to take a 3-1 advantage. Kolb managed an escape in the second 30-second period but it wasn’t enough.

Heavyweight Collin Jensen responded in the next match with a 3-1 decision over Chris Lopez. After a scoreless opening stanza, Lopez earned a second-period escape before Jensen answered with one of his own in the third period. With time winding down, Jensen took down Lopez at the buzzer to emerge with a victory and give NU an 18-7 lead.

Nebraska suffered back-to-back losses in the next two matches before 141-pounder Colton McCrystal closed out the dual with a victory. At 125 pounds, No. 9 Tim Lambert lost to defending national champion Jesse Delgado in overtime, 3-1. In the following bout, senior Shawn Nagel (133) fell by a 4-2 margin to No. 11 Zane Richards.

NPCC Lady Knights Avenge Loss to Central with Victory

npcc-knightsNorth Platte – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (12-9, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-1 NCCAC) avenged their loss two weeks ago to the Central Community College Lady Raiders (17-7, 2-1 Region IX Division II, 3-2 NCCAC) by a score of 57-50 after jumping out to a 17 point lead early in the game.

The win was an important victory for the Lady Knights in both the Region IX Division II standings and also the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference (NCCAC) standings. The victory evened the Lady Knights and Lady Raiders in the standings with both owning a 2-1 record with the Lady Knights hosting Southeast Community College (12-12, 0-2 Region IX Division II, 1-2 NCCAC) and the Lady Raiders traveling to Beatrice yet this season.

“It was a big win for us in the Region,” said assistant coach Nolan Collins. “The girls are playing with a lot of confidence after winning four straight.”

The victory also gave the Lady Knights a leg up in the NCCAC race as they improved to 3-1. Other teams in the conference race are Central who is now 3-2, McCook Community College who is 1-3 and Southeast who is 1-2.

The Lady Knights got off to a blistering start and used a 10-0 run to earn their largest lead at 22-5 early in the game. April Stull led the way totaling a halftime high of seven points. The Lady Raiders would not go quietly however and used a 13-0 run of their own to cut the score at halftime to 31-23. Lindsey Larson led the Lady Raiders at the break with six points.

In the second half the Lady Raiders would continue their comeback and were able to even gain a lead over the Lady Knights. North Platte would answer with strong play of their own to earn as much as a 12 point lead before a 3-pointer with a second left made the final margin seven for the Lady Knights.

DaVontaye Merritt did not score in double-figures for the second straight game, but was able to pull down a game-high 18 rebounds. Jordan Dickerson and Aliyah Brown led the way for the Lady Knights in scoring as they each scored 11 points. April Stull also was in double-figures for the Lady Knights with 10 points.

Sophia Yarger was the only Lady Raider in double-figures with 17. North Platte native Shelby Allberry again led the Lady Raiders in rebounds with seven.

The Lady Knights take the road next week as they face the Northeastern Junior College Plainswomen (9-10) on Tuesday Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m. CST in Sterling, Colo. and then travel to Lamar, Colo. to take on the Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes (12-7) on Friday Feb.7 at 6:30 p.m. CST. The Lady Knights fell to the Plainswomen 51-67 at home back in December and knocked off the Runnin’ Lopes 87-84 at home earlier this year.

Huskers Soar Past Iowa, 80-67

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballIowa City, Iowa – Tear’a Laudermill scored a career-high 26 points and Jordan Hooper added 25 points and 13 rebounds to power Nebraska to an 80-67 women’s basketball win at Iowa on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers improved to 15-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten while notching their seventh consecutive victory in the series with the Hawkeyes over the last three seasons. Iowa slipped to 17-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference, as the Huskers snapped Iowa’s three-game winning streak.

In the best all-around performance of her career, Laudermill erupted for 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range to tie her career high with four threes. She also went a perfect 4-for-4 at thre free throw line, while grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists in 33 minutes. Laudermill scored Nebraska’s final six points to close out the win, after starting point guard Rachel Theriot fouled out with 3:33 left. Theriot finished with 10 points and four assists.

“It is so much fun to see a player mature as both a player and a person,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “T is definitely doing that right in front of our eyes. She is playing great basketball and having a lot of fun doing it. She was huge for us today.”

Hooper produced her second straight 25-point performance, while adding a game-high 13 rebounds. Hooper added three assists, two steals and a block. She produced her Big Ten-leading 10th double-double while tying 1993 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings for second in career double-doubles at NU with 36. Hooper hit 11-of-22 shots from the field, including 3-of-8 three-pointers.

Junior forward Hailie Sample added a strong floor game with 10 points – all in the second half – while adding six rebounds, two assists and a block. Sample went 3-for-5 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line.

In their second straight 80-plus point performance, the Huskers hit 50 percent (31-62) of their shots from the field, including 7-of-18 three-pointers (.389). Nebraska got huge first halves from Laudermill and Hooper to take a 38-27 halftime lead. Laudermill, who was coming off back-to-back career-best 18-point efforts, erupted for 15 points in the first half on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range. Laudermill added three rebounds and a pair of assists despite being challenged by a pair of early foul calls.

Laudermill’s explosiveness created space for Hooper to go to work. With the two teams tied at 19 with eight minutes left in the half, Hooper scored seven straight points to ignite a 14-0 run over the next five-plus minutes. Hooper capped the run with a jumper with 2:28 left to put NU up 33-19, before Doolittle scored to end a six-minute scoreless drought for the Hawkeyes.

They also combined to hit 5-of-8 threes, while NU went 5-of-11 from long range. Sadie Murren closed the half by hitting 1-of-2 free throws with 3.8 seconds left to end the first-half scoring.

Taylor kept Iowa in it in the first half, scoring 10 of Iowa’s first 19 while going 4-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-3 threes. Samantha Logic and Doolittle each added three field goals, but the Hawkeyes went just 11-of-27 from the floor in the half, including 3-of-8 from long range. Disterhoft hit 2-of-3 free throws to account for all of Iowa’s points at the line.

Nebraska outrebounded the Hawkeyes 22-15 in the first half, but lost the turnover battle 8-7.

Hooper, Laudermill, Theriot and Sample made sure the Hawkeyes didn’t get any closer in the second half. Hooper scored the first seven points in the first two minutes of the second half to push NU’s lead to 18 points and force and Iowa timeout. The Big Red lead grew as large as 19 points, and the Huskers never allowed the Hawkeyes to trim it closer than 11 points the rest of the day.

The Huskers continue their two-game Big Ten road swing when they travel to Madison to take on Wisconsin on Wednesday. Tip-off between the Big Red and the Badgers is set for 7 p.m. (CT) with free live audio on Huskers.com provided by the Husker Sports Network.

Welker Doesn’t Dwell on Costly Drop

Wes Welker Denver Broncos FootballJERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Wes Welker swears he doesn’t dwell on his costly drop in the Super Bowl two years ago that could have sealed New England’s win over the New York Giants and made up for losing to them four years earlier.

“You know what? I don’t even think about it,” Welker said as he prepared for his third Super Bowl, his first with the Denver Broncos. “The past is the past, what happened, happened, and I’m just looking forward to this one and going out there and playing my best game and doing what I can to help my team win.”

Welker said getting to the big game and coming up short two times is what drives him.

“I think it’s the reason I get up in the morning in the offseason and even now,” he said after helping the Broncos beat his old team for the AFC title, securing a showdown with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.

Welker tied a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions for 103 yards six years ago but the Patriots’ perfect season ended when Eli Manning threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left to give the Giants a 17-14 win.

The teams met again four years later in Indianapolis and Welker caught seven passes for 60 yards and ran twice for 21 more, but it was the catch he didn’t make that haunts Patriots fans to this day.

The Patriots led 17-15 with four minutes left and were on the Giants’ 44 when Tom Brady found Welker wide open 23 yards downfield. The pass, however, was high and slightly behind Welker, who got both hands on the ball but couldn’t make the catch.

The Giants got the ball back and drove for the winning touchdown.

“Sure, I mean it motivates you during the offseason. It motivates you when you’re working out, it motivates you through the year,” Welker said. “Just that feeling of losing that game, I mean it’s heartbreaking. It takes a few weeks just to get over it. It definitely sticks with you and motivates you for the future and definitely blessed to have this opportunity again.”

Welker joined Peyton Manning in Denver in the offseason after six seasons with Brady and was Denver’s leading receiver until missing the final 3½ games after sustaining his second concussion in a three-week span. He still ended up with 778 yards on 73 catches and a career-high 10 touchdowns. Wearing a bigger helmet to protect against further head injury, he’s caught 10 passes for 76 yards and a TD in the playoffs.

He had four catches for 38 yards against New England in the AFC Championship and his hard hit took out Patriots top cornerback Aqib Talib on a pick play at the line of scrimmage. The next day, Patriots coach Bill Belichick suggested Welker deliberately tried to hurt Talib and complained to the league about it.

The NFL said no infraction had occurred.

Welker’s teammates said Belichick was just using Welker as a smoke screen and a scapegoat to hide deficiencies in his team’s defense and the fact that Welker’s replacement in New England, Danny Amendola, dropped the only pass thrown to him in the title game.

Welker stayed above the fray, saying he was just happy to be back in the Super Bowl.

“I’m very blessed to have this opportunity again and that’s all you really ask for,” he said. “It’s all you work for during the offseason is to get to this point and now you just want to finish it.”
