Storm Make Trades, Bring In Valesano

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm head coach and general manager Jim Hulton announced two trades Monday afternoon which will position his team for the future.

The Storm will acquire forward Conner Valesano from the Sioux Falls Stampede, along with a second round pick in the 2014 Phase I Draft in exchange for Storm defenseman Garrett Cecere and an eighth round pick in the 2014 Phase I Draft.

Tri-City has also agreed to send forward Joel L’Esperance and future defenseman Logan Fauber to the Sioux City Musketeers in exchange for future forward Jake Wahlin of White Bear Lake High School, a second round  pick in the 2014 Phase II Draft and a player to be named later.

“It has been a difficult day and this is the business side of the game that none of us enjoy,” Hulton said. “This is an opportunity for two outstanding, loyal players that have been a huge part of the Storm family. It will allow them to play in playoff competition that will have them better prepared for their colleges next year.”

“Most importantly, it’s a huge boost to the future for the long-term health of our franchise. It was quite simply two offers that were too good to refuse, that allows us to stay highly competitive this year and hopefully catapult into one of those top four powerhouse positions next year.”

Both Cecere and L’Esperance came to the Storm within the same week, via trades with Dubuque and Des Moines in 2012. They now leave the team as some of the better skaters in recent memory.

Cecere, an assistant captain, scored four goals and assisted on 27 others while in Kearney. He was a mainstay on defense, who was also a contributor on the power play.

“Garrett was a highly sought after player throughout the league but in particular with Sioux Falls,” said Hulton. “They’ve been heavy in their pursuit for a while. We were insistent that we have Valesano; he’s a player that we think has all the attributes of what we want to build. He’s got a huge work ethic, grit, character, leadership skills and we’ll have him for a year and a half as opposed to Garrett who is leaving next year.”

“The second round pick in the Phase I draft allowed us to address a lot of needs for our future in one deal.”

L’Esperance was the Storm’s leading scorer this season with 21 goals and 13 assists in 35 games. He finishes his career in Tri-City with 53 points in 86 games on 31 goals and 22 assists.

The Michigan Tech commit will stay in the Storm record books, as his total of 31 goals in under two seasons is 17th best all-time.

“This was also a very, very difficult deal for us,” Hulton said. “Anytime you move your leading scorer it is hard, but again the package sets us up for the future. There might be a little bit of short term pain for this one but there will be long term gain. Jake Wahlin is a highly regarded offensive player out of Minnesota. All of our reports both internal and external using NHL sources indicated that he was going to be a very high end producer immediately in this league. We also get a second round pick in the Phase II Draft which is hopefully someone who steps right in to our lineup.

Valesano is expected to join the team and dress for Tuesday night’s game in Lincoln. The Duluth, Minn. native is in his second season in the USHL, and has accumulated 12 goals and 23 assists for the Stampede in 90 games.

Wahlin, originally selected by Des Moines in the 2012 USHL Futures Draft, has starred at White Bear Lake and played for the United States at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament with current Storm forward Austin Poganski. The St. Paul, Minn. native is also committed to play collegiately at the University of Massachusetts.

The Storm will head to Lincoln on Tuesday night to face the Stars at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City will be back in Kearney to face the Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday and Saturday evening. Friday night’s game will get underway at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s contest will start at 7:05.

2014 Fishing Forecast Ready for Nebraska Anglers

Nebraska_game_and_parksLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Anglers can start planning fishing vacations or researching their strategies for the year with the 2014 Fishing Forecast.

The publication, made available by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, contains fish sampling data, along with a forecast of where anglers may find large quantities and large sizes of certain fish in the state.

State biologists sample fish populations annually. Some of the largest bodies of waters are sampled every year, while other fisheries are sampled once every few years. The sampling gives the agency information needed to manage fish populations, but is also a good predictor of the fishing that can be expected in the coming year.

The 2014 Fishing Forecast may be found at www.OutdoorNebraska.org or wherever fishing permits are sold. Fishing regulations have not changed for 2014.

Manning’s Charity to Get $24,800 for His ‘Omahas’

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth will receive a $24,800 donation for all the times he shouted “Omaha!” during the AFC championship game Sunday.

The donations were organized by the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce after Manning’s 44 pre-snap “Omaha!” calls during the Denver Broncos win over San Diego received national attention.

Eight Omaha companies combined to donate $800 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” for every time he yelled the city’s name during the Broncos’ victory over the New England Patriots.

The participating companies are ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks, Cox Communications, CenturyLink, Union Pacific railroad and DJ’s Dugout Sports Bar & Grill.

Husker Rally Falls Short in 77-75 Loss to Purdue

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – In another classic battle that went down to the wire, No. 18 Nebraska battled back from a 12-point deficit to tie the game with 30 seconds left, but No. 22 Purdue got the game-winner with 1.7 seconds left to escape Pinnacle Bank Arena with a 77-75 women’s basketball win on Sunday.

Nebraska slipped to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big Ten, while Purdue improved to 13-5 and 3-3 in the conference.

Playing in front of more than 6,000 frenzied Husker fans and a Big Ten Network national television audience, junior guard Tear’a Laudermill buried back-to-back threes in a 20-second span to turn a six-point Husker deficit into a tie ball game with 1:22 left.

Laudermill scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half to keep the Huskers close with the Boilermakers.

Purdue regained a 75-73 lead on a layup from Whitney Bays with 49 seconds left. Bays, who scored all 19 of her points in the second half to carry the Boilermakers to victory, missed a free throw in the and-one situation.

The Huskers answered at the other end with a pair of clutch free throws from Rachel Theriot in a one-and-one free throw situation with 29.7 seconds left to tie the game at 75. Theriot, a 6-0 sophomore point guard from Middleburg Heights, Ohio, led four Huskers in double figures with 19 points, while adding four assists.

Purdue held for the last shot and April Wilson missed a driving shot from the right side, but Bays was there for the putback with 1.7 seconds to claim the win. Nebraska was unable to get a shot off after a timeout and a length of the court pass.

Bays was big for the Boilermakers, scoring six straight points to push Purdue’s lead to 70-61 with 5:07 left. The surge by Bays answered a 7-0 Husker run that had turned a 53-48 deficit into a 55-53 lead on a Laudermill layup with 10:39 left.

That was one of only two leads for the Big Red on the day, joining a 6-4 edge early in the basketball game. Courtney Moses, who led all scorers with 21 points on the day, shot Purdue to an early edge by hitting five straight threes to open the game. She hit four straight in a three-minute span to stake Purdue to a 27-15 lead with 9:00 left in the first half. She helped Purdue go 10-for-19 from long range in the game, although she missed her last four threes.

Nebraska trimmed the margin to just 36-32 at the half, despite going just 10-for-27 from the floor in the opening period. NU was also just 2-for-8 from three-point range in the first half, while knocking down 10-of-14 free throws.

Purdue hit 41.2 percent (14-34) of its first half shots, but connected on 8-of-12 first-half threes after hitting 7-of-8 to open the game. The Boilermakers did not attempt a first-half free throw.

Nebraska shot a solid 63 percent (17-27) in the second half including 4-of-5 three-pointers, but went just 5-of-8 from the free throw line. NU finished 50 percent from the field for the game, including 6-of-13 from three-point range and 15-of-22 at the line.

Purdue finished 44.8 percent from the field, but attempted 13 more field goals than the Big Red. The Boilermakers also went 7-of-11 at the line in the second half.

Purdue won the possession battle by outrebounding Nebraska, 37-34, and winning the turnover battle 16-14. The Boilermakers grabbed 13 offensive boards, including the board by Bays that led to the game-winner.

Emily Cady notched her fourth straight double-double and eighth of the season with 13 points and 16 rebounds. She added six assists for the second straight game while notching three blocked shots.

Hailie Sample was the fourth Husker in double figures, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half while adding five rebounds for the game. Senior Jordan Hooper managed just nine points on 2-of-10 shooting, while managing four rebounds and two steals. Hooper was 1-for-4 from three-point range, but her three tied the game at 53 midway through the second half.

KK Houser helped Purdue with 16 points, including four three-pointers, on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. She added six assists and six steals. April Wilson added 13 points.

Nebraska will enjoy the mid-week off from competition before returning to Big Ten road action at Northwestern on Sunday, Jan. 26. Tip-off at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., is set for 4 p.m. (CT) with live video provided by BTN.com All-Access and free live audio from the Husker Sports Network on Huskers.com.

L’Esperance’s Two Goals Not Enough For Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – Joel L’Esperance scored his 20th and 21st goals of the season for the Tri-City Storm (12-21-2) but it wasn’t enough as the Dubuque Fighting Saints (21-10-1) pulled out a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at the Viaero Event Center.

Storm goaltender Hayden Lavigne made 40 saves, keeping Tri-City in the game, while defenseman Garrett Cecere recorded two assists.

Chris Wilkie also scored for Tri-City, upping his point streak to five games.

Dubuque took the lead on a power play goal by Jacob Benson at 11:56 of the first period, but the Storm tied it up when L’Esperance got his first tally of the night just 46 seconds later.

Christian Horn, back in the lineup after missing three games with an injury, found L’Esperance, who drove to the net and beat Dubuque netminder Kevin Reich with a shot to the upper right hand corner. Cecere picked up the second assist on the play.

The Fighting Saints took the lead in the second on a goal by Eric Robinson, and once again the Storm responded within a minute, re-tying the game.

This time it was Patrick Curry who found Wilkie at the center of the crease for a one-timer that went under Reich. The goal was the Omaha native’s ninth of the season. Center Chase Berger was credited with the second assist.

But Dubuque scored twice more later in the middle period, getting tallies from Seamus Malone and Robby Darrar to take a 4-2 lead at the end of two.

L’Esperance scored his second of the night at 2:17 of the third period to bring Tri-City within one goal at 4-3, but Tri-City never got over the hump.

An empty net goal for Shane Eiserman with less than two minutes remaining in the game sealed the win for Dubuque.

Reich made 28 saves for the Fighting Saints, winning his second game of the season.

Dubuque outshot Tri-City 45-31.

The Storm will head to Lincoln on Tuesday night to face the Stars at 7:05 p.m. Tri-City will be back in Kearney to face the Sioux Falls Stampede next weekend Jan. 24-25. Friday night’s game will get underway at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday’s contest will start at 7:05.

Huskers Come Up Short Against Iowa, 22-9

UNLLincoln, Neb. – Junior 157-pounder James Green upset top-ranked Derek St. John, but No. 8 Nebraska (8-1, 2-1 Big Ten) suffered its first loss of the season in a 22-9 setback to No. 3 Iowa in front of 3,946 fans on Saturday evening at the Devaney Center.

Green’s victory came in the fifth match of the night after 149-pounder Jake Sueflohn earned the first victory for Nebraska in the previous bout. Green, the No. 3 wrestler in InterMat’s rankings, earned a takedown against St. John in the first period to take an early 2-0 lead against the defending national champion.

In the second period, St. John escaped to cut the lead to 2-1 before another takedown by Green made the score 4-1. In the third period, Green managed two more takedowns to notch a 9-7 victory over St. John. Green, a two-time All-American, improves to 22-0 on the season, while St. John suffers his first loss of the 2013-14 campaign after a 20-0 start.

Sueflohn, the No. 5 wrestler in InterMat’s poll, took down No. 13 Brody Grothus by a 5-2 decision in the third match of the night to cut Iowa’s lead to 10-3. Sueflohn earned two takedowns against the Hawkeye and improves to 22-3 on the season with an 8-1 mark in duals.

No. 4 Robert Kokesh (174) earned Nebraska’s third win of the evening with a 7-3 decision over No. 6 Mike Evans. Kokesh, a junior All-American, notched three takedowns in the bout and moves to 24-1 on the season, with a 9-0 dual record.

The Huskers suffered losses in the first three matches of the dual as No. 9 Tim Lambert (125) and Colton McCrystal (141) fell by decision and Shawn Nagel (133) lost by major decision.

Lambert battled No. 3 Thomas Gilman to a scoreless first period before Gilman earned a second-period escape. Lambert chose down to start the third period and earned an escape, but Gilman earned a point for riding time and managed a 2-1 victory over the Husker redshirt freshman.

Nagel fell to No. 3 Tony Ramos, 15-4, and McCrystal dropped a 9-2 decision to No. 13 Josh Dziewa.

Following Green’s victory at 157 pounds, Nebraska trailed Iowa 10-6 at the halfway point. At 165 pounds, Austin Wilson fell to No. 4 Nick Moore, 8-2. After Kokesh cut the Iowa’s lead to 13-9, the Hawkeyes won narrow matches in each of the final three bouts.

No. 11 TJ Dudley (184) suffered his first dual loss of the season in a 6-4 sudden victory at the hands of Sammy Brooks. Caleb Kolb (197) earned a third-period escape against No. 16 Nathan Burak in the subsequent match, but the Hawkeye managed a 3-1 victory. At heavyweight, Collin Jensen lost to No. 3 Bobby Telford, 2-0.

The Huskers hit the road next weekend for a pair of Big Ten duals. Nebraska faces Ohio State on Friday at 6 p.m., in Columbus, Ohio, before Sunday’s matchup against Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind., at noon. Both duals will be streamed online on the Big Ten Digital Network.

No. 3 NPCC Knights Knock off Central Community College

npcc-knightsColumbus – The No. 3 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team’s (16-1, 6-1 South Sub-Region, 2-0 NCCAC) knocked off the Central Community College Raiders (14-4, 1-1 NCCAC) 78-71 in a Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference game behind four players in double figures.

“A great way for our team to respond after dropping our first game,” said assistant coach Nathan Wieseler. “Going on the road and getting a win is never easy. We are happy to be heading home with two more wins.”

For the second straight game, the Knights got out of the gate hot to jump on the home team. In this game, the Knights opened up 26-14 lead over the Raiders. The Raiders would not go quietly as they battled back to trail only 36-33. Ethan Montalvo continued his scoring spree as he was the only player in double-figures at half with 12 points.

“We knew they were a good team and were going to battle back after our good start,” said Marco Pascolo. “We were able to respond and earn the victory. It was a good win for team morale.”

In the second half, the Knights would score a couple baskets in the row, only to see Central go on a mini run of their own. The Raiders were able to tie the game three times in the second half, but were never able to take a lead. During the last five minutes North Platte stretched the lead to 10 points and held off the Raiders for the victory.

Montalvo again led the Knights with 21 points and seven rebounds. Marco Pascolo chipped in 19 points while Cameron Williams also scored 19 points and dished out six assists. Tim Simmons was the fourth Knight in double-figures as he finished with 14 points. Aireon Porter tied Montalvo for the team lead in rebounds with seven.

The Raiders were well balanced as all five starters scored in double-figures. Tra-Deon Hollins led the way with 16 points. Tyron Criswell (14 points), John Ruffin (12 points), David Plain (11 points) and Riak Bol (10 points) were the other Raiders to score double-figures.
