LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Running back Ameer Abdullah says he’s returning to Nebraska for his senior season even though the NFL draft advisory committee told him he probably would be selected “very high in the first half” of this year’s draft.
Abdullah said Thursday that he wants to finish his college education before turning pro. He said he’ll receive his history degree in December. He said all eight of his siblings are college graduates.
Abdullah said the high number of running backs in the draft pool didn’t affect his decision. He had the most productive season by a Nebraska rusher since Ahman Green in 1997. Abdullah went over 1,000 yards for the second straight year. His 1,690 yards was the fourth-best total in program history.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s foundation for at-risk youth will receive a $500 contribution for every time the Denver Broncos’ quarterback shouts “Omaha” during the AFC championship game.
Manning brought national attention to Nebraska’s largest city with his loud “Omaha” pre-snap calls during the Broncos’ playoff win over San Diego last weekend.
Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce president and CEO David Brown announced Thursday that five Omaha-based companies are combining to donate $500 to Manning’s “Peyback Foundation” each time he shouts “Omaha” in Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.
Manning said “Omaha” 44 times in last week’s game. The same number against the Patriots would be worth $22,000 to his foundation.
The participating companies are ConAgra Foods, First National Bank of Omaha, Mutual of Omaha, Omaha Steaks and Union Pacific Railroad.
Cheyenne, WY – The No. 3 North Platte Community College men’s basketball team (14-1, 6-1 South Sub-Region) suffered their first loss of the season on Wednesday night to Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (14-6, 5-2 South Sub-Region) 78-82. The Knights trailed by 12 points at half and could never get over the hump in the second half, cutting the lead to two with under a minute to go.
The Knights opened the first half sluggish and were never able to find their rhythm as they only shot 41 percent from the field in the first half. Sophomore Ethan Montalvo kept the Knights in the game by scoring 15 first half points. Deshon Portly and Deon Edwin paced the Golden Eagles with 14 and 11 first half points to take a 45-33 lead into the locker room.

The Knights forced a couple Laramie County turnovers and converted in transition to cut into the lead. After one such steal and lay-up by Kenyon Gist, the Knights cut the deficit to two points and immediately fouled.
Laramie County missed two free throws and gave the Knights an opportunity to tie or win the game with 23 seconds left. The Knights were unable to score and called a timeout with five seconds remaining. The Knights were unable to score and Laramie County hit two free throws to earn the hard fought victory.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — A federal judge is allowing a central Pennsylvania seventh-grader to be a member of the all-boys wrestling team at her middle school.
U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann says in a ruling Monday that the Line Mountain School District failed to justify its reasons for preventing girls from wrestling with boys.
The school district says there are psychological, physical and moral risks for girls wrestling boys, but Brann says the district did not present any expert testimony or examples to support those claims.
Brian and Angie Beattie of Herndon filed a lawsuit last year, saying their daughter Audriana was being denied the opportunity to wrestle because of her gender.
The girl’s attorneys, Terry Fromson and Abbe Fletman, issued a statement praising the judge’s decision.
The No. 18 Nebraska women’s basketball team returns home to start a two-game Big Ten home stand on Thursday night, when the Huskers take on Minnesota.
Tip-off between the Big Red (12-3, 2-1 Big Ten) and the Golden Gophers (12-5, 1-2 Big Ten) is set for 8 p.m. (CT) with live national television coverage by the Big Ten Network with Mike Couzens and Mary Murphy on the call.
Both teams are coming off big wins on Sunday. The Huskers rolled to a 75-56 victory at Illinois. The Huskers unleashed their best second-half performance of the season by blitzing the Fighting Illini’s “Buzz” defense for 49 second-half points. Husker forwards Jordan Hooper and Emily Cady combined for 41 points and 19 rebounds on the day for the Big Red.
Minnesota crushed Northwestern with an even more explosive second half. The Golden Gophers outscored the Wildcats, 52-33 in the second half on their way to a 94-59 victory at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Gopher guards Rachel Banham and Sari Noga combined for 45 points and nine assists.
Hooper, a two-time All-American and first-team All-Big Ten pick for the Huskers, takes aim at the 2,000-point scoring mark on Thursday night. The 6-2 senior from Alliance, Neb., needs 10 points to become the fourth player in Nebraska history to reach the 2,000 mark, joining Karen Jennings, Maurtice Ivy and Kelsey Griffin on that distinguished list. If she scores 10 points, Hooper would also notch the 100th double-figure scoring game of her illustrious NU career.
Hooper ranks among the top three players in the Big Ten with 20.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. She owns seven double-doubles this season and 33 in her career. She needs 10 points and 32 rebounds to become the fifth Big Ten player in history to reach career milestones of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
