Omaha, Omaha

Peyton-Manning-OmahaOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Peyton Manning can’t quit shouting about Nebraska’s largest city.

The Denver Broncos quarterback used the word “Omaha” loudly and often during Sunday’s NFL playoff win over the San Diego Chargers. Its meaning, if there is one, is known only to the Broncos.

It provided unexpected publicity for the city of 427,000, which is perhaps best known as the home of billionaire Warren Buffett. Omaha was a trending topic on Twitter during the game. By one count, Manning uttered “Omaha” 44 times.

Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce president and CEO David Brown says he wants to explore the possibility of hiring Manning to shoot a promotional ad for Omaha, though the quarterback’s fee might be prohibitive.

American Cancer Society & BTN LiveBIG Team up for Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend

BTN Live Big 10CHICAGO – As part of its pro-social initiative BTN LiveBIG, the Big Ten Network (BTN) will join the American Cancer Society in the support of Suits and Sneakers™ Awareness Weekend Jan. 24-26, when coaches wear sneakers with their suits during games to raise awareness of the fight against cancer.

BTN is televising games at Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana and Nebraska that weekend and is working with the universities and the society to encourage students on each campus to wear suits and sneakers to the games. The university with the most students “suited up” will receive a $10,000 donation to the school’s Relay for Life Initiative, which raises critical funds for cancer research.  The donation will be presented at halftime of a home game in February.

“Big Ten students are not only the best college sports fans in the country but they also have big hearts,” said Erin Harvego, BTN vice president of marketing. “Through BTN LiveBIG, we are excited to provide an opportunity with the American Cancer Society for students to support not only their school and their coach but also this great cause. We expect to see some very creative suit/sneakers combinations in the student sections that weekend.”

Coaches’ participation in Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend provides a visual reminder that prevention is key when it comes to blocking cancer before it takes center court in people’s lives, said Natalie Morrison, American Cancer Society managing director for Coaches vs. Cancer. “Thanks to BTN and Coaches vs. Cancer supporters, the American Cancer Society is able to provide hope, support and answers to the nearly 14 million cancer survivors celebrating another birthday this year.”

Each student wearing a suit will need to visit a specially designated check-in station at each arena before the second half of the game in order to be counted and compete for the $10,000 donation.

The annual event is coordinated by the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Since 1993, participating coaches have helped raise more than $85 million for the society’s lifesaving work. Jerseys For A Cause Benefits Make-A-Wish

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Tri-City Storm’s Jerseys For a Cause program raised a total of $1,326 in the month of December. All of the proceeds have been donated to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Central Nebraska.

The program has continued into the new year and the funds raised during the six home games in January will be donated to the Phelps Memorial Healthcare association.

Storm Acquire Larsson From Youngstown

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – After injuries left Tri-City with just four healthy members of their defense for Saturday’s game with Sioux Falls, the Storm have traded for Fredric Larsson of the Youngstown Phantoms.

Larsson, who was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft (111th overall), has appeared in 26 games for the Phantoms this season, registering a goal and four assists.

Hailing from Karlstad, Sweden, the defenseman becomes the second Swedish native on the Storm roster, joining goaltender Jacob Johansson.

Larsson will bring size to the back end, measuring in at six-foot four-inches and 170 pounds.

The 19-year-old defenseman is expected to join the team this week and dress for Friday’s game in Omaha.

No. 16 Huskers Pull Away at Illinois, 75-56

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballChampaign, Ill. – Jordan Hooper and Emily Cady combined for 41 points and 19 rebounds to power No. 16 Nebraska to a 75-56 road win over Illinois at the State Farm Center on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, while Illinois slipped to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

In a low-scoring first half, the Huskers took a 26-22 lead into halftime, then took complete control in the second half. The Big Red shot 56.7 percent in the second half, including 6-of-13 from three-point range. Nebraska led by as many as 21 points late in the game before settling for the 19-point victory.

“I really liked our poise in the second half,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “We got rattled a little bit late in the first half, but in the second half we took great care of the basketball and hit some shots. Emily was great the whole game for us, and we got good contributions from a lot of people. That was a really good Big Ten road win.”

Hooper, a 6-2 senior forward Alliance, Neb., led the Huskers with 22 points and nine rebounds. Cady, a 6-2 junior forward from Seward, Neb., added her sixth double-double of the season and second in Big Ten play with 19 points, 10 boards, three assists and a block. Cady went 6-for-9 from the field, including a three-pointer, while going 6-for-6 at the free throw line.

Hooper and Cady led four Huskers in double figures, including junior guard Tear’a Laudermill who scored eight of her 13 points early in the second half to help the Big Red pull away. Sophomore point guard Rachel Theriot added 11 points and six assists. Junior starter Hailie Sample added four of her five points in the second half, while adding seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Junior guard Brandi Jeffery also scored all five of her points in the second half to help the Huskers.

Nebraska’s hot-shooting second half helped NU finish 47.2 percent (25-53) from the field, including 7-of-19 from three-point range. The Huskers also hit 18-of-20 free throws. NU outrebounded Illinois 37-34, but lost the turnover battle, 18-15. However, Nebraska outscored the Illini in points off turnovers, 18-13.

Ivory Crawford led Illinois with 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Jacqui Grant added 15 points and three blocks. No other Illini managed more than seven points, as Illinois went just 22-of-63 (.349) from the field, including a dismal 2-for-27 from three-point range. The Fighting Illini also hit just 10-of-16 free throws.

After surrendering nine points of a 13-point first-half lead late in the period, Cady got Nebraska off to a strong second-half start with a traditional three-point play to put NU’s lead to 29-22.

Illinois’ leading scorer, Amber Moore answered with only three of the game to cut it back to four, before Laudermill notched another three-point play. After an Alexis Smith basket by the Illini, Brandi Jeffery drained a three for NU.

The Big Red still led by just six before Hooper hit a three and Cady added another three-point play to push the NU margin to 12 points with 13:11 left. After a pair of Hooper free throws, Laudermill hit another three for NU then got a steal and a layup to match NU’s biggest margin of the game at 50-37. Cady then hit a shot to give NU its biggest margin at that point in the game at 52-37 with 10:37left, forcing an Illini timeout.

Sample, Cady and Hooper continued the surge, extending the Nebraska margin to 59-40 with 8:32 left, and Illinois got not closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Nebraska jumped to a strong start, scoring the game’s first seven points in the opening three minutes. The Huskers took a double-digit lead for the first time on a Theriot bucket with 10:10 left in the half made it 15-4 NU.

A minute later, the Big Red took their biggest lead of the half on a layup by Laudermill to go up 19-6 with 9:07 left.

But Crawford and Grant got going for Illinois in the final nine minutes, combining for the Illini’s final 16 points. The duo combined on a 6-0 run to end the half to cut Nebraska’s halftime edge to 26-22.

Hooper led the Huskers with eight points and five boards in the first half, while Cady added six points and seven rebounds. Theriot pitched in six first-half points of her own along with two assists, while Laudermill finished with five in the opening period.

The starters for both teams combined for all 48 points in the first half. Crawford and Grant each led the Illini with nine points.

The Huskers led at the half despite going just 8-for-23 (.348) from the field, including 1-for-6 from three-point range. NU did hit 9-of-10 free throws and outrebounded Illinois 21-16. However, the Big Red lost the first-half turnover battle, 12-7.

Illinois shot just 30 percent (9-30) in the first half, including 0-for-14 from three-point range. The Illini were just 4-of-8 at the free throw line.

Nebraska returns to Lincoln to open a two-game Big Ten home stand this week. The Huskers open the stand by taking on Minnesota at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday at 8 p.m. Tickets are available now at Huskers.com.

Stampede Survive Late Comeback From Storm

tcstormKEARNEY, Neb. – The Sioux Falls Stampede (21-11-2) withstood a late comeback from the Tri-City Storm (12-19-2) and held on to win 6-4 at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday night.

Nolan Aibel scored his first career USHL goal, while Dan Labosky, Chris Wilkie and Garrett Gamez each recorded two assists for the Storm in the loss.

The Stampede took control of the game in the opening period, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead and outshooting the injury plagued Storm 16-7. Veteran forwards C.J. Franklin and Dennis Kravchenko each scored power play goals in the first frame.

Tri-City cut the lead in half early on in the middle period, when Aibel found the back of the net for the first time in his 12th game in a Storm sweater. Gamez and Patrick Curry were each credited with an assist on the play.

But the Storm couldn’t stay out of the penalty box, giving Sioux Falls eight power plays in the first 40 minutes. The Stampede capitalized, scoring twice more on the power play, and once during a 4-on-4 situation.

After Dakota Joshua and Kravchenko had scored on the power play, Storm head coach Jim Hulton pulled starting netminder Jacob Johansson in favor of backup Hayden Lavigne.

Lavigne surrendered a fifth goal to defenseman Ed McGovern and Sioux Falls took a 5-1 lead into the locker room after two periods.

The Storm never gave up however, and made a game of it in the final 20 minutes of play.

First, Garrett Cecere found the back of the net for the first time this season while on a power play to cut the lead to 5-2. Both Labosky and Wilkie assisted on the man-advantage goal.

Just under six minutes later, Austin Poganski scored his 10th of the season and pulled Tri-City within two, at 5-3. Once again, Labosky and Wilkie had assists on what was the Storm’s third power play goal of the evening.

Storm forward Ryan McMurphy capped off a three-goal run by Tri-City and pulled his team within a goal with under three minutes remaining in the game, taking a pass from Gamez and scoring his seventh tally of the season to make it 5-4.

But Tri-City ran out of time and Kravchenko completed a hat trick, scoring an empty net goal with 32 seconds left on the clock to seal the 6-4 win for Sioux Falls.

Both teams had big nights on the man advantage, as Sioux Falls scored on four of eight power play chances and Tri-City found the back three times in eight chances.

Winning goaltender David Jacobson made 28 saves and picked up his first assist of the season on the team’s second goal of the night.

Johansson made 18 stops before being replaced and Lavigne saved 11 of 12 shots that came his way in the second half of the game.

The Storm will travel to Omaha for their final matchup of the season with the Lancers on Friday night at7:05 p.m. Tri-City will then return home to face the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the Viaero Event Center on Saturday, also at 7:05.
