Storm Assistant, Largen, Headed To Janesville

Largen Janesville Tri-City Storm HockeyKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm assistant coach Erik Largen has accepted a new position as the number one assistant coach with the Janesville Jets of the North American Hockey League.

Largen, who was in his first season with the Storm after coming to Kearney in June, will get a chance to move into a role as a number one assistant after spending time in the number two role with Tri-City.

“Erik’s a bright young coach who has a very strong future in this game,” said Storm head coach Jim Hulton. “He’s got a good work ethic in both coaching and in recruiting and when you combine those two it makes for a very bright future. We’d like to thank him for all his efforts representing the Storm and we wish him all the best in his endeavors in Janesville.”

The Fairbanks, Alaska native began his coaching career as an assistant with the Fairbanks Ice Dogs in the NAHL under former Storm head coach Josh Hauge.

Largen, who is 26-years-old, also spent two seasons with the Twin Cities Northern Lights of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MNJHL).

“We’re happy with current assistants JB Bittner and Erik Blase,” Hulton said. “We think we can make up for the loss of Erik with a group effort. JB has a ton of experience as a recruiter with his background at Ohio State so he’s very comfortable picking up on the scouting and I’ve also done a lot of scouting in my past.”

The Storm head to Sioux Falls this weekend to face the Stampede in a two-game series Jan. 3-4.

Tri-City will return home for a pair of weekend games against Omaha and Sioux Falls on Jan. 10 and 11. The Lancers will be in Kearney for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Friday night, while Sioux Falls returns for a 7:05 start on Saturday.

No. 22 Iowa Beats Nebraska 67-57

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa looked shaky at times but Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery will take the win.

Devyn Marble had 15 points and eight rebounds and No. 22 Iowa opened its Big Ten season with a win for the first time since 2006 with a 67-57 victory over Nebraska on Tuesday night.

Aaron White scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half for the Hawkeyes (12-2, 1-0), who led by as many as 20 points in the second half.

For McCaffery, the late struggle doesn’t matter. Iowa preserved the win and he knows the Big Ten gauntlet continues on Sunday with No. 4 Wisconsin.

“You watch the Big Ten today and it’s just brutal,” McCaffery said. “I think you feel good about any Big Ten win. When you look at this league, there is no relief anywhere, there is just none. Whether you’re at home, no matter who you’re playing.”

Terran Petteway had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Nebraska (8-5, 0-1), which shot a season-low 29.9 percent from the field as it lost its 14th straight game to a ranked opponent.

White’s breakaway two-handed dunk put the Hawkeyes ahead 55-35 with 8:16 left — the biggest lead of the game.

Nebraska stormed back with a 20-5 run, capped off by Petteway’s 3-pointer with 1:45 left to cut the deficit to 60-55.

Nebraska got the ball back after an Iowa free throw, but Deverell Biggs’ pass deflected off the rim for a turnover.

The Hawkeyes — who missed 17 free throws in the game — hit 7 of 10 from the line in the final 2 minutes to secure the win.

Missed free throws are becoming a concern for McCaffery, even though the Hawkeyes rank in the middle of the Big Ten in free throw shooting.

Iowa has been inconsistent recently. The Hawkeyes missed late free throws in their losses to Villanova and Iowa State.

“They were going in and out,” said Marble, who made 7 of 11 against Nebraska. “All you can do is keep shooting them.”

Iowa won despite making only one 3-pointer and being outrebounded.

Nebraska put up 19 more field goal attempts than the Hawkeyes behind a staggering 17 offensive rebounds. It didn’t help much as the Cornhuskers had only 15 second-chance points.

“We just missed too many inside shots,” Nebraska coach Tim Miles said. “I don’t know why. It’s going to make us sick watching that tape.”

Walter Pitchford scored 13 points for the Cornhuskers and Biggs added 12.

Iowa shut down Ray Gallegos, who hit a career-high seven 3-pointers against the Hawkeyes last season. Gallegos didn’t get off a shot attempt in 23 minutes.

The Hawkeyes led 30-23 after a tough first half where they went nearly 5½ minutes without a field goal.

White jolted Iowa and the fans inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena with another dunk — this time an impressive reverse slam in transition.

A couple of minutes later, White made two free throws to tie the game 22-22.

Then White hit a rare 3-pointer — only his third of the season — to put the Hawkeyes back in front. White scored two more baskets down the stretch to help Iowa end the half on a 12-1 run.

Iowa’s Jarrod Uthoff scored 11 points.

Hooper Claims Big Ten Weekly Award

jordan-hooperNebraska senior Jordan Hooper earned her first Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week award this season, sharing the honor with Minnesota’s Amanda Zahui B. on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Hooper erupted for 30 points and 11 rebounds in just 20 minutes in Nebraska’s win over Oral Roberts to close non-conference play. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., hit 11-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-8 three-pointers, and all four of her free throw attempts in the game. She added two assists, two steals and a blocked shot in an efficient all-around effort. Hooper scored 23 points and had eight rebounds in the first half, helping the Huskers produce a school-record 62 first-half points.

It was Hooper’s seventh career Big Ten Player-of-the-Week award.

Hooper and the Huskers open Big Ten Conference action against Northwestern on Thursday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Tip-off with the Wildcats is set for 8 p.m.

Huskers Host Talented Wildcats in Big Ten Opener

Nebraska, which was the preseason pick of media and coaches to win the 2014 Big Ten title, closed non-conference play with a 10-2 record after rolling to an 89-53 win over Oral Roberts on Dec. 29. It was NU’s fourth straight win by 20 or more points during its current home stand.
The Big Red played one of the best halves of basketball in school history against ORU, erupting for a school-record 62 first-half points. Nebraska opened the game on a 24-0 run and built the lead to 35-2 in the first 10 minutes.

All-American Jordan Hooper unleashed the most productive and efficient game of her career with 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, a block and two steals in just 20 minutes. She hit 11-of-15 shots, including 4-of-8 threes, and all four of her free throws. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., also moved ahead of Kiera Hardy into No. 5 on Nebraska’s career scoring list. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten choice, Hooper enters her final Big Ten season with 1,933 points and 941 rebounds. Hooper is just 100 points and 78 rebounds shy of the career production of Nebraska’s 2010 first-team All-American Kelsey Griffin.

Coach Joe McKeown and Northwestern bring a young and athletic lineup to Lincoln. The Wildcats recently ran to an 84-54 win over ORU on Dec. 16.

Huskers Visit Jacksonville Hospital

nebraska_helmetJacksonville, Fla. – Following the Nebraska football team’s final practice in preparation of Wednesday’s Gator Bowl with the No. 23 Georgia Bulldogs, members of the team visited the Wolfson Children’s Hospital in downtown Jacksonville.

The visit provided an opportunity for the children in the hospital to meet role models and was an ideal way for the players from both Nebraska and Georgia to lift the spirits of local hospitalized children.

Wolfson Children’s Hospital is also the beneficiary of the Gator Bowl VyStar 5K Run that is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Jacksonville Landing.

The Huskers will go through a final walkthrough tomorrow before meeting the Bulldogs at 11 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday, Jan. 1, at EverBank Field. The game is scheduled for a national-broadcast on ESPN2.

Tipoff is set for 6:06 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the game will be carried nationally on BTN (Ch. 610 on DirecTV, Chs. 439 and 9500 on Dish; Chs. 2, 1333 on Time Warner Cable) with Cory Provus and Stephen Bardo on the call. The game can also be heard for free on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as Sirius and XM Radio.

The Huskers’ Big Ten opener is the middle game of a three-game road swing, as Nebraska is 8-4 on the season following a 74-59 loss at Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon. In that game, Nebraska was within 47-44 with 9:30 left, but the Bearcats’ strength on the boards and foul shooting helped the hosts pull away. Cincinnati out-rebounded Nebraska, 40-30, and hit 25-of-30 from the foul line, including 18-of-21 in the second half.  Nebraska’s two road losses have come against teams which are a combined 21-4 on the season (Cincinnati and Creighton).

Despite the loss, Nebraska received strong efforts from sophomore Terran Petteway and senior Ray Gallegos, who combined for 40 of Nebraska’s 59 points. Petteway had a game-high 22 points for his fifth 20-point game of the year, while Gallegos matched his season high with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

For the third straight season, the Huskers open Big Ten play against a ranked opponent, as Iowa is 11-2 on the year and ranked 22nd in the latest AP poll. Dating back to last season, this will be the third meeting between the two teams in Nebraska’s last six regular-season Big Ten games.

The Hawkeyes have been off since Dec. 22, after beating Arkansas Pine-Bluff, 86-61. Iowa averages a Big Ten best 88.7 points per game and has been held to under 80 points just once in its first 13 games. Senior Roy Devyn Marble’s 15.3 points per game leads seven Hawkeyes who average at least seven points per game.

TD Run by 7-Year-Old Voted Top Nebraska Story

Jack-Hoffman-Nebraska-Football-ESPYOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A touchdown run by a 7-year-old boy with cancer has been voted by Associated Press newspaper and broadcaster members as the top Nebraska news story for 2013.

The 69-yard scamper by little Jack Hoffman occurred during the spring intrasquad game. Jack’s pluck and the players’ aid captured the hearts of Nebraska football fans and people who saw a YouTube video that’s received nearly 8.4 million viewings. The video was played over and over on national television and it won an ESPY award as the “Best Moment.”

In October Jack’s father, Andy Hoffman, said an MRI test showed that the cancer was in remission. The encouraging news was tempered by warnings from the boy’s doctors, his dad said: More than half of all kids in Jack’s situation have relapses.

Finishing second in the voting was the resignation of Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy after revelations that he made thousands of calls to women other than his wife on a state-issued cellphone. The calls were revealed after the Omaha World-Herald reviewed his phone records.

University of Nebraska Regent Lavon Heidemann was sworn into office as the state’s 39th lieutenant governor less than two weeks after Sheehy resigned. The former state senator had to vacate his seat on the university’s governing board.

U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns’ decision to not seek a second term finished third in the voting. He announced Feb. 18 that he would not run for re-election in 2014, saying he wanted a “quieter time” to focus on his family following a busy political career that included stints as governor and President George W. Bush’s agriculture secretary. Republican candidates to replace him include Omaha banker Sid Dinsdale, Omaha attorney Bart McLeay, former Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn and Midland University President Ben Sasse.

No Democrat has yet publicly declared his or her candidacy. Jim Jenkins, a central Nebraska cattle rancher, is running as a nonpartisan candidate, but he previously identified as a Democrat.

Fourth place in the AP members’ voting was the October blizzard that decimated cattle herds in westernNebraska ranching country.

Finishing fifth was the confirmation of former Nebraska U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel to become secretary of defense in the Democratic administration of President Barack Obama.

The tornado that struck the northeast Nebraska community of Wayne in early October finished sixth in the voting. The twister caused millions of dollars in damage and several dozen jobs at a mattress pad company that has chosen not to reopen its damaged plant. No one died in the storm, and the injuries reported were minor.

Two stories tied for seventh in the AP voting: The decision to build a new Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney got the same number of votes as the arrest of an Indiana doctor in the slayings of four Omaha people tied to a Creighton University medical school program.

The doctor, Anthony Garcia, had been fired from the program more than a decade ago. He is charged with fatally stabbing Thomas Hunter, the 11-year-old son of Creighton University pathologist William Hunter, and the family’s housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman, in 2008. Garcia also is charged in the May deaths of Creighton pathologist Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary.

The state’s decision to replace the outdated Grand Island home with a new facility in Kearney was greeted with howls from Grand Island. A Grand Island/Hall County group has prepared its own proposal for upgrading the Grand Island home and says it could save 40 percent of the state’s proposed cost.

In eighth place on the AP members’ list was the Keystone XL pipeline. In January the governor approved a pipeline route through the state. The Obama administration is still considering whether to approve the project.

No. 9 in the balloting was the looming governor’s race. Gov. Dave Heineman must step down after next year because of term limits. The race has taken a series of surprising turns. Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy and Falls City businessman Charles Herbster withdrew from the Republican race, following former Speaker Mike Flood, who bowed out last year. State Sen. Annette Dubas dropped out of the Democratic primary. Remaining in the primary contests are six Republican candidates and one Democrat.

The fate of the Nebraska football team finished 10th in the voting. The Huskers finished a disappointing regular season at 8-4, plagued by injuries and miscues. Head coach Bo Pelini kept his job, though, with a vote of confidence from the athletic director.
