NPCC Lady Knights Earn Road Victory at York JV

npcc-knightsYork – The North Platte Community College Lady Knights basketball team (5-5) evened their record as they took to the road Friday night where they defeated York JV 65-54 in York.

The Lady Knights would get off to a fast start behind the hot hand of sophomore Jordan Dickerson who connected on five 3-pointers in the first half to score all of her game-high 15 points. The Lady Knights would take a 43-23 into the locker room. The second half saw the York JV battle back and win the second half 22-31. It would not be enough as the Lady Knights first half lead proved to be insurmountable.

Dickerson was one of three Lady Knights in double figures. DaVontaye Merritt scored 14 points and Aliyah Brown scored 10 for the Lady Knights in the victory. Mesha Ellison led York JV with 18 points while Liz Maher had 12 points and Jaqueline Esqurel had 10.

“We played well in the first half,” said head coach Richard Thurin “but lost some intensity in the second half. Jordan (Dickerson) really stepped up by hitting five 3s.”

The Lady Knights return home tomorrow as they host Lamar Community College at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Knights then host Northeastern Junior College Dec. 11 to finish out the fall semester. The game with Lamar precedes the men’s game and will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1410 and online.

Huskers Travel to Creighton Sunday Afternoon

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska basketball team makes the 56.5 mile drive up I-80 on Sunday afternoon, as the Huskers trek to Omaha to face the Creighton Bluejays.

Tipoff for the annual matchup between the two programs is at 5:07 p.m. (CT) on Fox Sports 1 with Cory Provus and Bill Raftery on the call. On DirecTV, the game will be shown on Ch. 219, while DISH Network has the game on Ch. 150. Fans should check with their local cable provider to see if the game is on their local cable packages, as Fox Sports 1 is not on all basic cable packages throughout the state of Nebraska.

Sunday’s matchup with the Bluejays will be carried across the state on the 27-station Husker Sports Network with Kent Pavelka and Matt Davison calling all of the action, including flagship stations KLIN (1400 AM/94.5 FM) in Lincoln and KFAB (1110 AM) in Omaha (complete list of affiliates is on page five of the game notes). The game can also be heard for free on Huskers.com and is available on the Huskers’ app on iOS or android devices, as well as Sirius and XM Radio.

The Huskers are 6-2 on the season and head into their first road test of the season riding a three-game win streak after a 60-49 win over Miami Wednesday evening in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Nebraska continued its string of solid efforts on the defensive end, holding Miami to 32 percent shooting and has held its last three opponents to just 57.3 points per game on 37 percent shooting.

Nebraska also received strong performances from forwards Walter Pitchford (13 points and five rebounds) and Leslee Smith (seven points and 10 rebounds), who combined to limit Miami’s two starting forwards to a combined 1-of-8 shooting.  Pitchford has now been in double figures in three of the Huskers’ last four games, while Smith has pulled down nine or more rebounds in four of Nebraska’s last five contests.

The Huskers have relied on its new faces this season, as five of the team’s top six scorers are in their first season of competition at Nebraska. On Wednesday, NU started a lineup which featured one freshman and three sophomores.

If the Huskers are looking to snap a two-game losing streak to the Bluejays, Nebraska will need another strong defensive effort on Sunday, as Creighton is averaging 83.4 points per game.  The Bluejays feature two-time All-American Doug McDermott, who averages 24.4 points per game and an experienced lineup around the four-year starter, including fifth-year senior Ethan Wragge and sixth-year senior Grant Gibbs.

Romero Claims NSCAA All-America Accolades

huskersoccerLincoln – Nebraska senior defender Ari Romero captured Second-Team National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer All-America honors announced on Friday. Romero is the 12th Husker All-American and claimed Nebraska’s 18th NSCAA All-America award in school history.

“Ari is very deserving of being named an All-American.  Her performances in both practices and games were outstanding and her leadership qualities had a tremendous effect on her teammates throughout the season,” noted Nebraska Head Coach John Walker.

The Surprise, Ariz. native became a stalwart at center back for the Huskers throughout her career and flourished in her final season with the Scarlet and Cream. The NSCAA All-Region First Team honoree and Big Ten Defender of the Year displayed a tireless work ethic as she worked every second of the final 15 matches on her way to averaging more than 91 minutes per match in 2013.

“She trained and played with such passion that set a standard for her teammates to try and match,” said Walker. “This is the culmination of a great college career for Ari and we look forward to watching her career continue at the professional level and with her national team”.

Taking into account her time away from NU to participate with the Mexican National Teams each of the past two years, Romero started all 77 career matches as a Husker accumulating more than 89 minutes per contest throughout her career.

The two-time all-league performer helped guide the Husker defense to eight shutouts as Nebraska claimed both the Big Ten regular-season and Tournament Championships during her 19-4-1 senior season. Romero was one of four student-athletes from the Big Ten Conference to receive the prestigious honor.

Romero became the first NU All-American since 2010 when Morgan Marlborough took home Second-Team All-America accolades and just the second player in the last decade to be recognized.

Huskers Open Five-Game Stand with Aggies

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballThe Nebraska women’s basketball team returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena to open a five-game home stand, when the Huskers take on Utah State Sunday.

Tip-off between the No. 15 Huskers (6-2) and the Aggies (5-2) is set for 2 p.m. (CT), with live premium video coverage on BTN.com All-Access.

Nebraska slipped to 6-2 on the season with a 75-62 loss at No. 18 North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday. It marked the first back-to-back losses by Nebraska since losing at No. 8 Penn State (Jan. 13) and at home to Illinois (Jan. 17) last season. That marked the only time last season the Huskers lost back-to-back contests.

Two-time All-American Jordan Hooper led four Huskers in double figures with 18 points and nine rebounds. Hooper, a 6-2 senior forward from Alliance, Neb., moved to No. 8 on the Nebraska career scoring list with 1,846 points. Hooper needs 13 points to catch former Husker All-American and two-time WNBA All-Star Anna DeForge in seventh (1,859) and 21 points to match All-American and former WNBA player Nicole Kubik (1,867) at No. 6 on Nebraska’s career scoring list. Hooper also needs just six rebounds to become the third Husker in history to reach the 1,800-point, 900-rebound plateaus for her career.

Utah State brings a high-powered offense to Pinnacle Bank Arena. Second-year coach Jerry Finkbeiner has his Aggies averaging nearly 85 points per game. Utah State features a pair of dynamic guards in senior Jennifer Schlott (24.0 ppg) and Makenlee Williams (20.1 ppg). A play-making point guard, the 5-6 senior Schlott is also averaging 6.1 assists and 2.3 steals per game. Williams, a 5-11 sophomore, is Utah State’s best shooter from long range, burying 18 threes through the first seven games.

Waterloo Scores Three In Second, Beat Storm

tcstormWATERLOO, Ia. – The Waterloo Black Hawks (16-5-0) scored three straight goals in the second period and never looked back, defeating the Tri-City Storm (5-14-2) 4-1 in the teams’ third meeting of the season at Young Arena on Thursday night.

Joel L’Esperance scored a late power play goal for the Storm’s only tally of the night, while goaltender Jacob Johansson was stellar in between the pipes, making 37 saves.

Tri-City had the better of the play in the opening period but got nothing to show for it, unable to beat Waterloo netminder Mathias Israelsson on a couple good chances in the offensive end. The opening period ended with the teams still scoreless.

The Black Hawks took control of the game in the second, scoring two goals in just over a minute and adding a third later in the frame.

Waterloo forward Zach Sanford got the scoring started with a perfect deflection on a fluttering shot by defenseman Hayden Shaw to give the Black Hawks a 1-0 lead at 8:47 of the second.

Just 1:10 later, defenseman Mark Friedman took a long shot from the top of the zone that beat Johansson up high to make it 2-0.

The Black Hawks added a third goal from defenseman Brandon Montour in the final two minutes of the period and had a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Neither team scored in the final period until L’Esperance got Tri-City on the board with less than five minutes to go in the game. The Storm’s leading scorer found a loose puck in the crease and pushed it into the net to breathe some life into the team late in the game.

But a late comeback attempt fell short when defenseman Kevin Kerr was called for holding with less than two minutes remaining and the Black Hawks got an empty net power play goal from Blake Winiecki.

The Storm are back in action Friday night in Des Moines against the Buccaneers before finishing off the road trip on Saturday night with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Both games will get underway at 7:05 p.m.

The Storm are back at home on Dec. 13 and 14 to face the Youngstown Phantoms in a two-game series.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Ryan McMurphy, Ross Olsson and Joey DiBenedetto, along with defenseman Sean Lang.…
