Long Brothers, Zimmerer Named Academic All-Americans

nebraska_helmetThree Husker seniors were named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I football team on Thursday, as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Offensive guard Spencer Long was a first-team selection, while tight end Jake Long and fullback C.J. Zimmerer were named to the second team.

The three academic All-America selections continues Nebraska’s long tradition of academic honors. Nebraska was the only school with three players on the Division I team, with six schools having two honorees each. This marks the third straight year Nebraska has had multiple Academic All-Americans in football, boasting three in 2011 and two in 2012.

In Bo Pelini’s six seasons as Nebraska head coach, the Huskers have had 11 first- or second-team academic All-America picks. The 11 academic All-Americans in the past six seasons is the second-most in the country in that time period, trailing only Penn State’s 14 honorees in the same period.

The three honorees also increase Nebraska’s nation-leading totals of academic All-Americans in football and across all sports. Spencer Long’s first-team selection gives Nebraska 69 CoSIDA first-team Academic All-America picks, and the additional second-team honorees give the Huskers 107 all-time first- or second-team academic All-Americans in football. Notre Dame is second in the nation with 58 football academic All-Americans.

Across all sports, Nebraska increased its nation-leading total to 310 academic All-Americans. Notre Dame is second in all sports with 234 academic All-Americans.

Spencer Long carries a 3.79 grade-point average in biological sciences and plans to pursue medical school after graduation. Long is a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, and has been a standout on the field as well. Long was a second-team All-American in 2012, and a first-team All-Big Ten choice, before his senior season was cut short by a knee injury.

Long is the first Nebraska offensive lineman to earn academic All-America honors since Kurt Mann was a first-team choice in 2005.

Jake Long owns a 3.86 grade-point average in biological sciences and, like his brother, also plans on a medical career following graduation. Jake Long is a two-time first-team academic all-district pick. On the field, Long has been a key contributor at tight end each of the past three seasons and was the veteran of that group this season.

Spencer and Jake Long join an elite group of brothers at Nebraska to be named academic All-Americans. The Longs join Grant (1996, 1997) and Tracey Wistrom (2001) and Rob (1992, 1993, 1994) and Jon Zatechka (1997) as the only sets of brothers in school history to both earn academic All-America honors.

Zimmerer gives the Huskers three Omaha area natives on the academic All-America team. A criminology and criminal justice major, Zimmerer completed his undergraduate work in December of 2012 with a 3.82 grade-point average. On the field, Zimmerer has been a regular contributor at fullback for the past three seasons. His selection marks the third straight year Nebraska has had an academic All-America running back, following Rex Burkhead, who was a first-team selection in both 2011 and 2012.

Hooper scored four of NU’s first six points early in the second half to help the Huskers trim UNC’s margin to six points, but Nebraska could get no closer.

McDaniel led all scorers with 25 points, finishing 11-for-15 from the field, while adding eight rebounds. Allisha Gray added 14 points and Diamond DeShields pitched in 11 points off the bench. Stephanie Mavunga also helped UNC inside with eight points and 11 rebounds.

Storm Alumni Update: December

KEARNEY, Neb. – Three former Storm forwards had exceptional months during November and have been key contributors to their teams. For the month of December the Storm recognize Mario Lamoureux, Konrad Reeder and Torin Snydeman as their alumni of the month.

Playing for the Ontario Reign in the ECHL, Lamoureux has been one of the top scoring players on the team. He played well enough early in the season to warrant a call up to the AHL with the Oklahoma City Barons for three games. In 15 games, the Grand Forks, N.D. native has scored seven goals and six assists with a +9 rating.

A season ago, Lamoureux finished his first ECHL season as the top scoring rookie in the league with 25 goals and 40 assists. He was named to the All-ECHL Rookie Team and played in 10 postseason contests.

Lamoureux played four seasons with Tri-City from 2004-08 and is one of the franchise’s all-time leading scorers. He is the leader in games played, assists, points and penalty minutes, while ranking sixth in goals scored.

Reeder, a member of the first ever Tri-City Storm team in 2000 who is now playing for the Rapid City Rush, was recently named the third star of the month by the CHL. The veteran forward scored seven goals and 12 assists with a +10 rating in November.

A Vanderhoof, BC native, Reeder is tied for fourth in the league’s scoring race with 25 points on 11 goals and 14 assists.

Reeder was also an all-time great in Kearney, playing two seasons in the USHL and scoring 60 goals and 48 assists. His goal total has him tied atop the all-time list in Tri-City, and he is fourth all-time with 108 points.

Snydeman played 53 games for Tri-City during the 2008-09 season, scoring eight goals and 10 assists. After his junior career, he played for Sacred Heart University for two seasons before transferring to Northeastern University.

Although he had to sit out a year per NCAA transfer regulations, Snydeman has jumped into the mix at his new school in Boston, cementing himself in the lineup and contributing to the team’s early success.

In the month of November, Snydeman scored four goals, including a game-winner against Merrimack on Nov. 23. Most recently, he scored in a 3-2 come from behind victory over Notre Dame in the championship game of the Shillelagh Tournament.

The junior from Groton, Mass. has been in the lineup for all 15 games this season.

Tri-City heads to the state of Iowa for three games this week. The Storm battle Waterloo on Thursday night, before heading to Des Moines and Cedar Rapids on Friday and Saturday. All three games begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live on The Breeze, 94.5 FM.

Four Huskers Claim All-Region Awards

huskersoccerLincoln – The awards continued to pour in for the Nebraska soccer team as four Huskers appeared on the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-Great Lakes Region lists. Seniors Emma Stevens and Ari Romero earned First Team honors, while fellow senior Jordan Jackson and freshman Jaycie Johnson claimed Second Team designation.

Stevens, a four-year starter in net for NU and All-Big Ten Second Team selection, notched 19 victories with five shutouts working over 2,000 minutes en route to a 1.08 goal-against average her senior season. The Corona, Calif. native finished her collegiate career as the all-time leader in saves at Nebraska with 271 stops and became the first Husker goalkeeper to score a goal in the Big Ten title-clinching victory over Indiana.

Romero helped guide the Nebraska defense to eight shutouts as the senior consistently denied defenders quality scoring chances. The 2013 Big Ten Defender of the Year and Defender of the Big Ten Tournament displayed top-class stamina as she worked every second of the final 15 matches of her NU career. Aside from playing with the Mexican National Teams the past two seasons, the Surprise, Ariz. native started all 77 career matches as a member of the Scarlet and Cream.

The 2013 Big Ten Midfielder of the Year, Jackson excelled during her final season at Nebraska with 30 points on nine goals and a conference-best 12 assists, which ranks 10th nationally. Jackson became the eighth NU player to reach the 100-point plateau and concludes her Husker career ranking in the Top 10 in four offensive categories. Jackson’s senior year was highlighted by her fifth-career, five-point performance in a 4-0 shutout on Oct. 11 at Purdue.

Johnson, the Winnebago, Mo. native, came to Lincoln and made an immediate contribution to the Nebraska offense with a pair of scores in her debut match as the forward led NU with 17 tallies, tied for 13th in the country and third amongst freshman. On Nov. 15, Johnson recorded four goals in the NCAA First Round to become the first freshman and fifth player in NCAA Tournament history to accomplish the feat. Johnson earned a number of awards including All-Big Ten Second and Freshman Team honors, while also being named 2013 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Tournament.

The 2013 Huskers locked up both the regular-season and tournament titles for the fourth time in school history and for the first time since 2000. Head Coach John Walker was named All-Region Coach of the Year on Tuesday.
