NPCC Lady Knights Outlast Eastern Wyoming in Five Sets

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights (18-12) volleyball team outlasted the Eastern Wyoming Lady Lancers (7-20) in five sets on Monday night (20-25, 25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 15-10). It was the Lady Knights fourth five set match in their last seven games after having four previously. The win is head coach Sally Thalken’s 897th career win, all at North Platte.

The Lady Knights started out slow in the first set as they fell 20-25 to the Lady Lancers. North Platte would respond with very convincing second and third set victories to take a 2-1 lead after 25-15 and 25-13 victories. In the fourth set the Lady Knights were not able to close the door on the Lady Lancers and were defeated 23-25.

In the fifth and deciding set the Lady Knights would play aggressive and race out to an 8-3 lead as the teams would switch sides of the floor. The Lady Lancers would score the next two points to cut into the Lady Knights lead but were unable to get any closer. North Platte would hold its largest lead of the fifth set at 14-8 and after two points by the Lady Lancers were able to earn the fifth set and game victory with a service error by Eastern Wyoming.

Samantha Kennedy would have a strong performance as she finished with a season high 21 kills and three blocks. Sandrina Hallahan would also finish in double figures with 11 kills. Shannon Liewer would lead the Lady Knights in digs as she finished with 26. Joli Hopping (23) and Laura Beckman (18) would be the leading assist women.

“Our kids played hard tonight,” said head coach Sally Thalken. “We really needed this win! It was a tough first set but we rebounded nicely in the second and third set and played with a lot of confidence. We played aggressive in the fifth set to get the victory!”

The Lady Knights remain on the road the rest of the season and travel to Columbus on Thursday October 17 to face the Central Community College Lady Raiders at 7 p.m. The Lady Knights defeated the Lady Raiders earlier this year at home in five sets when the Lady Raiders were ranked #6 in Division II.

Wagner to Miss 2013-14 Season with Ankle Injury

Nebraska-Huskers-BasketballLincoln – University of Nebraska Basketball Coach Tim Miles announced Monday that freshman Tim Wagner will miss the 2013-14 season after suffering a fractured left ankle in practice earlier this month.

Wagner, a walk-on guard from Galesville, Wis., underwent successful surgery late last week, and Nebraska basketball athletic trainer R.J. Pietig said the typical rehabilitation for the injury is between four and six months. Wagner averaged 23.8 points per game at Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School and led the school to a 20-5 record and a berth in the sectional finals in 2013.

“It was difficult because Tim was just starting to pick up things really well and it was such a freak injury,” Nebraska Coach Tim Miles said. “He has handled it about as well as you can, and surgery went well last week. It is a long recovery, but we are positive that he will be able to return to health.”

Jackson Named B1G Offensive Player of the Week, Nebraska Sits in First Place at 5-1

huskersoccerNebraska soccer senior Jordan Jackson was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday after she became the first player in the Big Ten this season to put together a five-point performance. Jackson accumulated her five points with one goal and three assists in the 4-0 win at Purdue on Friday night as the No. 24 Huskers (10-3-1, 5-1-0 Big Ten) positioned themselves alone at the top of the Big Ten standings with five matches remaining.

Friday night’s output marked the fifth time Jackson has amassed five points in a single match during her career. Jackson’s 31st career tally moved the senior into solo eighth place among all-time Husker goal scorers, while her 25 assists also rank eighth in program history.

The Overland Park, Kan. native recorded three assists in the road victory for the second time in her career at Nebraska and is the fifth Husker to have three second-half helpers. The two-time all-conference honoree is 17th Husker to earn at least three assists in one match.

Jackson has earned a point in eight of her last 11 matches and is tied for second in conference matches with 10 points. Jackson is also sixth in shots (244), seventh in shots on goal (122) and 10th in points (87) all-time at NU.

The starting NU forward earns her first weekly conference award since Sept. 21, 2010 as a member of the Big 12. Jackson is the second Husker this season to receive the honors as freshman Jaycie Johnson received the designation back on Sept. 23.

Huskers Release 2014 Schedule, Includes 27 Home Games

husker baseballLincoln – Head Coach Darin Erstad announced the 2014 Nebraska baseball schedule on Monday afternoon. The Huskers are set to play 56 games under the third-year skipper, including 27 games at Hawks Field. The Huskers will play 11 games against teams that qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament, including a pair of games with College World Series participant Oregon State. The Beavers were a pair of wins away from making a run to the 2013 National Championship Series, but fell to eventual national runner-up Mississippi State.

The Husker coaching staff scheduled a balanced non-conference slate with 15 games at home and 17 on the road, including seven neutral site games.

“Our staff put together a strong non-conference schedule that is going to test our team season,” Erstad said. “Right out of the gate we are going to play some tough games on the road against good competition and our guys are going to have to be ready. We put together a good home schedule that I believe our fans will enjoy. I want them to come out and see us play good teams. We will always try to have a 25-27 game home schedule each season that our passionate fan base is excited about.”

The Huskers will again play eight Big Ten series, playing four each at home and on the road. After completing a two-year cycle of conference games, Nebraska faces Michigan State and Penn State for the first time in the regular season, while dropping series with Indiana and Purdue. The Huskers have never faced the Spartans or Nittany Lions during regular-season conference play, but have battled both squads at the Big Ten Tournament.

After playing 19 of its first 24 games on the road last season, Nebraska starts the year with 10 straight games away from Lincoln, before returning to Hawks Field for 10 straight home games.

Opening day for Nebraska is set for Friday, Feb. 14, at the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Tempe Diablo Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The Huskers and the Pacific Tigers open the season at 1 p.m., and it will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Huskers return to Tempe Diablo the following day for a pair of games, as Nebraska takes on Oregon State at Noon followed by a contest with the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 4 p.m. The Huskers finish the weekend by playing their fourth game in three days on Sunday, Feb. 16, with a another game against Gonzaga at 1 p.m. The Huskers opened the 2012 season with a three-game series against Gonzaga in Peoria, Ariz., with the Bulldogs sweeping the series.

Nebraska returns to Arizona for the second weekend of the year, where they will visit Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz., the Spring Training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals. Fellow Big Ten programs Michigan State and Indiana will also be in Surprise with the Huskers, as the three Big Ten teams will play one game each against Pac-12 programs Oregon State, Washington and Utah.

The Huskers and Beavers kickoff the weekend on Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m., before the Huskers meet the Huskies on Saturday at 7 p.m.and the Utes on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Entering the 2014 season, the Huskers and Beavers have met only once, with OSU downing the Huskers, 4-3, during the second game of the 1999 season. Nebraska holds a 5-3 record over Washington, with the last meeting coming in 2011. Nebraska is 4-1 all-time against Utah, last winning a pair of games in Corpus Christi, Texas, early in the 2012 season.

The Huskers end their season-opening 10-game road swing with a trip to Charleston, S.C., for a three-game series with The Citadel. The Bulldogs and Huskers open the three-game set at 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, before continuing the series with one game each on Saturday and Sunday. The two teams have met once previously, with the Bulldogs winning at home, 8-5, during the 2006 Homewood Suites Shootout.

The Huskers’ home opener is set for Tuesday, March 4, at 1:35 p.m. when the Kansas State Wildcats visit Hawks Field. The Wildcats won the Big 12 regular-season title for the first time in 80 years last season and were also one win away from making a trip to the College World Series, but fell on the road to Oregon State at the Corvallis Super Regional.

Following two days off after hosting the Wildcats, Nebraska welcomes the St. John’s Red Storm from the newly formed Big East Conference for a three-game series. The series opens at 1:35 p.m. on Friday, March 7, with the Huskers holding a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series. The teams then meet at 1:05 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Northern Colorado then comes to Lincoln for a pair of games on Tuesday, March 11, and Wednesday, March 12, before the UC Irvine Anteaters open a three-game series at Hawks Field on Friday, March 14, at 4:35 p.m.

The Anteaters took 2-of-3 from the Huskers last season at home and hold a 3-2 all-time lead over the Huskers. The two teams have met before in Lincoln, with the Anteaters posting a 3-2 victory during the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

The 10-game home stand concludes on Tuesday, March 18, with the first of three meetings throughout the season with the Creighton Bluejays. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.

With 20 non-conference games in the books, the Huskers open Big Ten play in Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday, March 21, at 3 p.m. with a three-game set against the Iowa Hawkeyes. It marks the second straight season that Huskers have traveled to Iowa City, with the Huskers taking 2-of-3 at Duane Banks Field a year ago.

Nebraska stays on the road for its next two games, traveling to the state of Kansas for one game each with Wichita State and Kansas State. The Huskers visit the Shockers on Tuesday, March 25, for a 6:30 p.m. game before heading north on HWY 77 for a 6:30 p.m. game with the Wildcats the following night.

The Huskers conclude the month of March with a three-game home series with the UNLV Rebels. The Rebels will make their first-ever trip to Lincoln and the series opens on Friday, March 28, at 6:35 p.m. The two teams have previously met 22 times, with 20 of the game taking place in Las Vegas, as well as a pair of neutral site games.

Nebraska starts the month of April by paying a visit to former NU Head Coach Dave Van Horn with a mid-week trip to Fayetteville, Ark., for two games with the Arkansas Razorbacks. Game one is set for 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1, with the second game set for 1:35 p.m. the next afternoon. It will be the Huskers second trip to Fayetteville since Van Horn left Nebraska for his alma mater, as the Huskers and Razorbacks split a series in 2009. Last season in Lincoln, the Huskers swept a doubleheader from the No. 10 ranked Razorbacks, including a combined no-hitter from three Husker pitchers in game one.

Nebraska hosts it first Big Ten Conference series of the year on Friday, April 4, when the Ohio State Buckeyes visit Lincoln for the second straight season. In just two seasons as conference foes, the Huskers and Buckeyes have met nine times, including three times at the Big Ten Tournament. The teams are an even 3-3 during the regular season, but the Buckeyes hold a 2-1 advantage during postseason play.

The Huskers then play their next four games on the road, starting with their first trip of the season to TD Ameritrade Park on Tuesday, April 8, for a 6:30 p.m. game with Creighton. The week concludes with a three-game conference series in Minneapolis, Minn., with the Minnesota Golden Gophers that starts on Friday, April 11, at 3:05 p.m. The Huskers are 7-1 against the Gophers over the past two seasons.

Nebraska then hosts five straight home games, starting with the last of a three-game season series with Kansas State on Monday, April 15, at 6:35 p.m. UNO visits Hawks Field the next night, also at 6:35 p.m., for the first-ever meeting between the two teams since the Mavericks moved to Division I.

The five-game homestand ends with a three-game series against the Northwestern Wildcats, starting on Friday, April 18, at 6:35 p.m. It marks the second straight season that the Wildcats will head to Hawks Field during conference play.

Following the series with the Wildcats, the Huskers will be off for four days before heading to Ann Arbor, Mich., to face the Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines took 2-of-3 in Lincoln to end the 2013 regular season, but the Huskers bounced back with a 11-2 win over the Wolverines to open the Big Ten Tournament. The three game series opens on Friday, April 25, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.

Nebraska heads to Omaha on consecutive nights, starting on Tuesday, April 29, with a second trip to TD Ameritrade Park to face the Bluejays. The Huskers will be in Omaha the following night as well, but will be at Werner Park to battle UNO at 6 p.m. It will mark the Huskers first appearance at Werner Park, home of the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

The month of May consists of only Big Ten action, as the Huskers end the 2014 regular season with nine straight conference games.

The Penn State Nittany Lions open the month of May on Friday, May 2, at 6:35 p.m. with the first of three games at Hawks Field. It is the first-ever series between the two teams. The squads have met just once all-time, with the Huskers posting a 12-3 win at the 2012 Big Ten Tournament.

Nebraska then makes its first Big Ten trip to East Lansing, Mich., the following weekend for three games with the Michigan State Spartans, starting at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at McLane Baseball Stadium. The series is set to run Saturday-Sunday-Monday. The Huskers have made a trip to East Lansing once before, as they dropped the final game of the 1937 season, 6-0. The Huskers and Spartans last met during the opening round of the 2012 Big Ten Tournament, when the Spartans held off a late Husker rally to win, 10-9. Michigan State held a 10-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, but the Huskers rallied with seven runs and had the tying run on third base with two outs, but a leaping catch by All-Big Ten second baseman Ryan Jones on a ball off the bat of Pat Kelly ended the Huskers’ comeback.

The 2014 regular season comes to a close with a three-game series against the Illinois Fighting Illini. After opening Big Ten play with the Illini the past two seasons, the two teams will instead end the regular season starting on Thursday, May 15, at 6:35 p.m. The three-game set continues on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. and ends on Saturday at 1:05 p.m.

Nebraska will look to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament for the third straight season, which is being held at TD Ameritrade Park in 2014. Ticket information will be available at a later date.

Huskers Change Dates of Future Tennessee Series; Agree to Home-and-Home Series with Oregon

Nebraska and Tennessee officials announced on Monday that the dates of the future games between the schools have been changed to accommodate a requested schedule change from Tennessee.

The games originally scheduled between the Huskers and Tennessee in 2016 and 2017 have been pushed back a decade. Nebraska and the Vols will now meet in the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

The Huskers will play host to Tennessee on Sept. 12, 2026, and travel to Knoxville and Neyland Stadium on Sept. 11, 2027. The games will be the first-ever regular-season matchups between the schools. Nebraska won the only two previous matchups in the series, defeating Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl and the 2000 Fiesta Bowl.

With the change in dates of the future matchups with Tennessee, Nebraska announced on Monday it has agreed to a home-and-home series in 2016 and 2017 with the University of Oregon. The date of a 2016 matchup with Wyoming has also been moved to accommodate the changes.

“This is a win-win scenario,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said. “The University of Tennessee asked for scheduling relief, and we were able to add the University of Oregon, a perennial top-25 program, to our non-conference schedule as we roll into the College Football Playoff era. This should be a great series, not only for our football programs, but for the tremendous fans of both schools.”

The Huskers and Ducks will square off in Lincoln on Sept. 17, 2016. Nebraska will travel to Oregon’s Autzen Stadium for the second game in the series on Sept. 9, 2017.

The matchups will be the first between the schools since Oregon traveled to Lincoln in 1985 and 1986, with Nebraska winning both of those contests. The two schools have met six times overall, with Nebraska holding a 5-1 advantage in the series.

Oregon has been one of the nation’s top programs over the past decade. The Ducks have won at least 10 games each of the past five seasons, including 12 wins each season from 2010 to 2012. Oregon currently sits at 6-0 this season and is ranked No. 2 in both polls. The Ducks will be looking for a fifth straight BCS bowl appearance in 2013.

The final adjustment to the Huskers’ future schedule is moving the date of a 2016 matchup with Wyoming. Nebraska and Wyoming will meet on Sept. 10, 2016, at Memorial Stadium, after originally being scheduled to play on Sept. 17, 2016. The matchup with Wyoming completes a three-game series with the Cowboys. NU defeated Wyoming in the season opener in Lincoln this fall, and traveled to Laramie, Wyo., in 2011.

The matchups with Wyoming and Oregon in 2016 complete a non-conference schedule that opens with Fresno State visiting Memorial Stadium. The 2016 season is also the first year that Nebraska will play a nine-game Big Ten Conference schedule. NU’s trip to Oregon in 2017 is the second game on the Huskers’ 2017 non-league schedule, with Northern Illinois visiting Lincoln onSept. 2.

Nebraska’s two-game series with Oregon will continue the Huskers’ recent trend of frequent matchups with Pac-12 foes. Nebraska has recently played home-and-home series with USC (2006, 2007), Washington (2010, 2011) and UCLA (2012, 2013), while matching up in bowl games with Arizona (2009) and Washington (2010). In addition to games in 2016 and 2017 with Oregon, Nebraska is also slated to face off against Pac-12 foe Colorado in four games between 2018 and 2024.

The Huskers are scheduled to match up with a power conference opponent in non-conference play each season from 2014 to 2027, beginning with a home-and-home series with Miami in 2014 and 2015. In addition to Oregon and Tennessee, Nebraska will also face Colorado (2018, 2019, 2023, 2024), Cincinnati (2020, 2025) and Oklahoma (2021, 2022).

The Lady Dawgs Head to State

Bulldogs Pitcher Katie Franzen Delivers a Pitch Against Omaha Gross

The North Platte Lady Bulldogs missed out on the state tournament last season by a miniscule margin in the wild card points from the NSAA. This year the Dawgs didn’t leave anything to chance by winning the district championship.

North Platte was the No. 1 seed and hosted the B-6 District Tournament at the Dowhower Softball Complex last Thursday and Friday. The Bulldogs had a first round bye then played No. 4 seed Cozad in the quarterfinals. The Haymakers rallied to beat No. 5 Scottsbluff 12-11 in the first round to advance.

The Lady Dawgs were in a battle against Cozad until late in the game when North Platte strung a few hits together and took advantage of errors committed by Cozad to get the 9-2 win and advance to the semifinals.

In the semis North Platte played McCook, a team they had a 2-2 record against this season. The second-seeded Lady Bison beat No. 3 Gering 9-1 to get to this point.

North Platte jumped out to a 3-0 lead early then held on as McCook scored two runs late to get the 3-2 win and advance to the district championship game.

The Dawgs would once again face McCook after the Lady Bison dropped down and once again beat Gering, who had come back through the consolation bracket. McCook was riding high after rallying for three runs late in the game to beat Gering 10-9.

Having come so close to the state tournament last year and not making it there was all the fuel the Dawgs would need as they dominated McCook 9-1 in the championship game to get the six-inning run rule victory. North Platte’s clean up hitter, Mikenzi Wiseman hit two home runs in the game and Kylie Engelman added another to lead the Lady Bulldogs.

North Platte now goes in as the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Omaha Skutt Catholic in the first round of the state tournament. The game is scheduled for 9:00 am Wednesday morning in Hastings and it can be heard on ESPN Radio 1410 and online at www.northplattepost.com with Robert Lovell on the call.

North Platte and Skutt Catholic have played twice this season with Skutt winning the first game 6-1 then North Platte winning the second, 4-1.

Nebraska Hoping Martinez Heals up for Key Stretch

nebraska_helmetNebraska is entering its second bye week in a month, and no one in the Cornhuskers’ camp is complaining about the extra time off.

The Huskers did what they were supposed to do Saturday against the Big Ten’s weakest team, winning 44-7 at Purdue. If nothing else, the game showed they really could use injured quarterback Taylor Martinez healthy for the challenging November stretch that will determine whether the Huskers return to the Big Ten championship game.

Nebraska (5-1, 2-0) is tied with Michigan State for first in the Legends Division after Michigan’s loss at Penn State.

Tommy Armstrong Jr., making his first road start after two at home, threw three interceptions and completed only 6 of 18 passes against Purdue.
