Johansson Earns Shutout, Storm Win 1-0

Tri-City-StormKEARNEY, Neb. – Tri-City Storm goaltender Jacob Johansson continued his early season brilliance Saturday night, shutting down the Des Moines Buccaneers in a 1-0 Storm win at Buccaneer Arena.

Forward Ryan McMurphy netted his second goal in as many games and that was all Tri-City needed to pick up two points and stay undefeated in regulation.

Johansson made 35 saves and has now allowed just a total of two goals in his first three games.

The contest was scoreless until the end of the second period when McMurphy found a rebound in front of the net, beating Des Moines goaltender Billy Christopoulos for the games only goal.

Joel L’Esperance picked up an assist on the play, his first point of the season. L’Esperance won a battle in the corner and took the initial shot to create the scoring chance for McMurphy.

Christopoulos made 31 saves for the Buccaneers in their defeat.

The Storm are back at the Viaero Event Center for Rivalry night against Sioux City on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Notes: The Storm scratched forwards Ross Olsson, Steven Haydon, Joey DiBenedeto, Nick Hutchison and defenseman Garrett Cecere.…

Osborne Asked to Select College Football Playoff

Tom-Osborne-Nebraska-HuskerA person with knowledge of the process tells The Associated Press that former Notre Dame, Washington and Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham is expected to be on the College Football Playoff selection committee next year, and former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne has also been asked to be part of the panel.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday because the 12-to-18 member panel being put together by conference commissioners has not been finalized.

ESPN first reported Willingham would be on the committee, and that Osborne would also be a member.

Osborne is one of the most successful coaches in college football history. He won 255 games and three national championships in 25 seasons leading Nebraska.

Willingham went from Stanford to Notre Dame to Washington as head coach from 1995-2005.

Musketeers Drop Storm In Shootout

Tri-City-StormKEARNEY, Neb. – In a game that was similar to the Storm’s home opener last Saturday, Tri-City couldn’t find their way through a shootout, picking up a point, but losing to the Sioux City Musketeers 2-1 at the Viaero Event Center on Friday night.

Storm goaltender Jacob Johansson came up big for the second consecutive game, keeping his team in the game with 44 saves, including two when Tri-City was shorthanded in overtime.

In a penalty-filled opening period, the Musketeers took a 1-0 lead on a late goal by Adam Johnson at 17:14. The forward got ahead of the play off a pass from defenseman Terrance Amorosa and beat Johansson with a wrap around.

It didn’t take long for Tri-City to even the score however, as veteran forward Ryan McMurphy beat Sioux City goaltender Kyle Hayton up high with a shot off the crossbar just 2:21 into the middle frame.

Both Cutler Martin and Chase McMurphy picked up assists on the Storm’s only goal of the night. It was Martin’s second helper in two games, while Chase picked up his first career USHL point. The goal was Ryan’s third of his USHL career, after scoring two for the Storm a season ago.

With the game even at 1-1, the goaltenders took over and shutdown each team’s offense for the remainder of the game.

The Musketeers were given a big opportunity late in the game when Storm forward Drew Mayer was given a five-minute major and a game ejection penalty for kneeing with just 1:29 left in regulation.

But the Storm killed off the penalty both in regulation and in overtime, helped out by some huge saves from Johansson.

Neither team could find the back of the net in overtime, but both Avery Peterson and Jared Thomas scored for Sioux City in the shootout to finish the game.

Tri-City will travel to Des Moines to take on the Buccaneers in their first road contest of the season on Saturdaynight at 7:05 p.m. The Storm are back at the Viaero Event Center for Fire and Ice Night on Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Illini Big Test for Huskers’ Struggling Defense

UNLLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — What once looked like a cushy October schedule for Nebraska just might be more of a challenge.

The way the Cornhuskers’ defense has performed through four games surely has Illinois thinking it could steal a win at Memorial Stadium on Saturday and end its 14-game Big Ten losing streak.

Nebraska (3-1) is 107th nationally in total defense and no higher than 75th in any major category. Illinois (3-1) has displayed a versatile offense that’s averaging almost 480 yards a game.

The Huskers allowed 465 yards to FCS South Dakota State in their last game and used their bye week to shore up deficiencies ranging from missed tackles to attitude.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. will start at quarterback for Nebraska in place of the injured Taylor Martinez.

NPCC Lady Knights Overcome Slow Start to Defeat Northeast

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights (16-7) volleyball team overcame a slow start on Thursdaynight to defeat he Northeast Community College Lady Hawks (11-11) in a four set battles (28-30, 25-22, 25-20, 25-21). All four games were very competitive, however the Lady Knights were able to finish the second, third and fourth sets strong to claim victory.

The first set was the Lady Hawks get out to a fast start as they jumped out to a 0-3 lead before the Lady Knights could score their first point. The Lady Knights would cut the lead to 3-4. The match would then go back and forth with neither team gaining more than a two point advantage as both teams traded side outs.

The Lady Hawks would take a 16-18 lead before the Lady Knights would go on a 6-0 run gain a 22-18 advantage and forced a timeout. The Lady Knights would earn three set points as they took a 24-21 lead. However the Lady Hawks would not go quietly and battled back to tie the game at 24. The teams would trade side outs until the Lady Hawks would take the first set 28-30.

The third set was back and forth early as neither team could gain an advantage until the Lady Knights took the lead 9-6. The Lady Knights would stretch the lead to six at 17-11. Once again the Lady Hawks would not go quietly and would tie the game at 19. The Lady Knights then had two blocks to earn points and were able to force a timeout from Northeast after leading 23-21. The Lady Knights would even the game at one game apiece after taking the second set 25-22.

The Lady Knights and Lady Hawks would battle back and forth at the start of the third set as neither team could gain more than a one point advantage until the Knights scored three points in a row to take a 13-10 lead. The slim margin would be enough as the Lady Knights finished off the third set with a 25-20 victory.

The Lady Hawks would start the fourth set strong as they jumped out to an early 1-5 lead.  The Lady Hawks would maintain their early lead as they led the Lady Knights 5-11 before North Platte would start to chip away until they were able to tie the game at 17. The Lady Knights would continue to ride the momentum as they opened up a two point lead at 20-18. The Lady Knights would extend the lead to close out the set and the game 25-21.

“We didn’t start out very well,” said sophomore Sabrina Hallahan. “I thought we fought back and overcame some adversity, especially in that fourth set to come back to win.”

The Lady Knights were paced by Samantha Kennedy who finished with 12 kills and six blocks, Sandrina Hallahan who finished with 10 kills and six blocks and Sabrina Hallahan who finished with nine kills and 19 digs. Joli Hopping led the way with 24 assists and Laura Beckman had 18. Shannon Liewer led the Lady Knights with 30 digs.

“Northeast has a salty team,” said head coach Sally Thalken. “It shows character from our girls to come back from the 11-17 deficit (in the fourth set). I don’t like putting ourselves in that position, but I was glad we were able to come back.”

The Lady Knights remain at home next week in their final two home games of the season as they host Northeastern Junior College on Monday at and Southeast Community College on Wednesday October 9. On Monday the Lady Knights are welcoming students and families from Osgood School and Lake School with free admission. On Wednesday the Lady Knights will honor their five sophomore; Sabrina Hallahan of Brush, Colo., Shannon Liewer of Imperial, Sandrina Hallahan of Brush, Colo., Jacee Kershaw of Culbertson and Laura Beckman of Julesburg, Colo. The game will start at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN Radio 1410.

Huskers Confident Heading Into Weekend without Martinez

nebraska_helmetLincoln – The Nebraska football team finished up preparations for Illinois by practicing for two hours on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields and inside the Hawks Championship Center on Thursday.

Head Coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media after practice, and said the team got a lot of good work done this week and addressed the quarterback situation.

“We’ll start Tommy (Armstrong),” Pelini said. “Ron (Kellogg III) will be ready to go and Taylor (Martinez) will not play.”

Pelini said that whether Armstrong and Kellogg will split reps depends on how the game goes. Pelini added that Martinez is making progress but won’t put him on the field until he is 100 percent. Martinez hasn’t played since the turf toe injury he suffered on Sept. 14 against UCLA.

“(Both quarterbacks) had a good week,” Pelini said. “They are feeling good. I think their confidence just grows. They’ve been getting a lot of reps. No matter who the quarterback is, the key is playing good around them. I think our guys understand that and we’re ready to do that.”

Pelini also talked about the MIKE linebacker position and said David Santos will “probably” get the start.

“(Santos) had a good couple weeks,” Pelini said. “He’s had a good last few days. I have to check out today’s film but that’s where we are leaning.”

Pelini added that he thought today’s communication in practice was the best it has been since the Huskers started fall camp.

“I didn’t feel good after yesterday’s practice but I felt really good after today’s practice,” Pelini said. “With our guys, it’s a consistency issue and it’s a focus issue. It’s a discipline approach of playing the way you need to play.”

Nebraska’s Homecoming game against the Fighting Illini kicks off at 11 a.m. at Memorial Stadium on Saturday. ESPNU will carry the TV coverage.
