Plaintiffs Hope Settlement Can Help Ailing Players

nfl_logo2011-medTony Dorsett hopes a tentative $765 million settlement with the NFL can make a difference in the lives of the thousands of former players who are suffering from concussion-related brain injuries.

Players like Dorsett, a Hall of Fame running back.

The settlement announced Thursday would provide immediate compensation for players, pay for medical exams and treatment, and underwrite research to protect future generations from the effects of repeated blows to the head. And Dorsett tells The Associated Press there is “definitely a dire need for help” for the players.

Former Philadelphia Eagles fullback Kevin Turner says the money will lift a “huge burden.” Former players and their families can now make decisions based on their health, not their finances, said Turner, who, at 44, suffers from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Bryan Brothers, Chasing History, Win at US Open

US-Open-TennisNEW YORK (AP) — Bob and Mike Bryan opened their pursuit of the first men’s doubles Grand Slam of the Open era with a straight-sets win Thursday.

The top-seeded twins beat Federico Delbonis and Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 7-6 (1), 6-2 as they opened the defense of their title at Flushing Meadows. Coming into last year’s U.S. Open, they hadn’t captured a major championship in more than a year. Now they’ve won four straight.

That made them the first men’s doubles team to hold all four major titles at the same time in the Open era, which started in 1968, and now they’re chasing the calendar year Grand Slam.

The 35-year-old brothers didn’t face a break point Thursday in advancing to face Eric Butorac and Frederik Nielsen.

Judge: NFL, Players to Settle Concussion Lawsuits

nfl_logo2011-medPHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal judge says the NFL and more than 4,500 former players want to settle concussion-related lawsuits for $765 million.

The global settlement would fund medical exams, concussion-related compensation and medical research.

The plaintiffs include at least 10 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett. They also include Super Bowl-winning quarterback Jim McMahon and the family of Pro Bowl linebacker Junior Seau, who committed suicide last year.

The lawsuits accuse the league of hiding known risks of concussions for decades to return players to games and protect its image. The NFL has denied any wrongdoing.

Senior U.S. District Judge Anita Brody in Philadelphia announced the proposed settlement Thursday. She still needs to approve the deal, which comes after months of court-ordered mediation.

Perez Homers Twice, Leads Duffy, Royals Past Twins

kc-royalsMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Salvador Perez had four hits and two home runs, Danny Duffy pitched 6 2-3 shutout innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 8-1 Wednesday night.

Duffy (2-0) was called up from Triple-A before the game and replaced the struggling Wade Davis in the rotation. He allowed five hits and struck out seven in his third start for Kansas City since having elbow surgery last June.

The Twins struck out 10 times and set the club record for strikeouts in a season with 31 games to go. Minnesota batters have fanned 1,127 times, breaking the previous mark of 1,121 set in 1997.

NPCC Knights Defeat Concordia University JV

NPCC-Knights-LogoThe North Platte Community College Lady Knights (5-0) took to the road for the first time this season to defeat the Concordia University Lady Bulldogs JV 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 19-25, 25-11). The first three sets were tightly contested battles with the Lady Knights winning the first two sets before dropping the third. The Knights then dominated the fourth set to secure the victory.

Despite a slow start the Lady Knights were able to win the first and second game 25-20 and 25-19. In the third set the game was back and forth with neither team able to create separation. The Lady Knights were able to create a little breathing room at 15-12. However the Lady Bulldogs went on a 13-4 run to end the third set to claim the victory. In the fourth set the Lady Knights would leave no doubt as they raced out to a 9-1 lead and would never look back on the way to a dominating 25-11 victory and a 3-1 victory.

The Lady Knights were led by Sandrina Hallahan with 10 kills and three blocks. Kylie Wroot had 9 kills for the Lady Knights. Joli Hopping led the Knights with 19 assists and Laura Beckman had 17. Shannon Liewer led the Knights with 19 digs. Sabrina Hallahan and Beckman each had three service aces for the Lady Knights.

“I was a little disappointed in our slow start,” said head coach Sally Thalken. “We didn’t play with much discipline or enthusiasm tonight. We will need to change that to be competitive this weekend.”

The Lady Knights return to action this Friday and Saturday as they travel to Colby, Kan. to compete in the Colby Classic. The Lady Knights open up the Classic on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Highland Community College then return to the court the next day at 10 a.m. to face the host Colby Community College. The tournament is concluded for the Lady Knights as they take on Trinidad State Community College at 12 p.m.

Seven Huskers Awarded Blackshirts

Nebraska-Cornhuskers-Football-Blackshirts-HelmetsLincoln, Neb.-  The Nebraska football team continued its game one preparations for Wyoming during a two-hour practice held inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass Practice Fields in half pads Wednesday evening.

Defensive Coordinator John Papuchis met with media after practice, announcing that seven Husker defenders were awarded the coveted Blackshirt jersey today before practice.

“We decided that some of the veteran guys–some of the leaders have done a tremendous job in helping some of our younger guys on our defense come along, and their effort on the field and their attitude and work in the meeting group.” Papuchis said, “Part of being a Blackshirt is being defined by your work ethic and your attention to detail and your leadership you bring to the team.”

As for the players selected to be a part of the Blackshirt tradition in 2013, the list goes as follows.

Upfront seniors Jason Ankrah and Thad Randle were selected as defensive lineman in the Blackshirt group. Ankrah has started 18 games over the past two seasons, including the final seven games of 2012 and will be a vital player on the defensive side of the ball.

Randle, a defensive tackle, will also be looked upon as a key player that could help solidify the Husker front four. Randle has fought through multiple injuries in his career, but was a bright spot for NU during 2012, playing in 13 games, including six starts. Randle recorded 21 total tackles, 10 of which were unassisted with two quarterback hurries.

Sophomore David Santos was the only linebacker selected to wear the prestigious Blackshirt jersey. Santos, the likely starter at Mike linebacker, recorded 24 total tackles last season as a freshman, 11 of which were unassisted, with two tackles for loss. It will be crucial for Santos to lead the young linebacker corps during the 2013 season.

Three cornerbacks were selected to be Blackshirts, seniors Stanley Jean-Baptiste and Ciante Evans, as well as junior Josh Mitchell. Much has been said about the stout secondary Nebraska returns in 2013, and these three are leaders of the group, all with potential to play at the next level.

After switching from wide receiver to cornerback in 2011, Jean-Baptiste has settled in well to his new position, recording 24 total tackles in 2012, with nine PBU  and two interceptions, one for a touchdown (Minnesota).

Nickel back Ciante Evans will look to lead the Blackshirt group from the secondary in 2013, Evans a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2012 by CBS and ESPN should have another tremendous season in store, being a potential All-American selection. Evans returns after starting 12 games last year for NU, recording 56 total tackles, 38 of which were unassisted. Evans also recorded one interception in 2012.

Junior Josh Mitchell will look to continue to build on his already strong career at Nebraska during 2013. The undersized but vicious cornerback will be among the leaders of the secondary in 2013, after compiling 34 total tackles, 23 of which were unassisted.

Last but certainly not least, one safety was selected to wear the Blackshirt jersey as well, with junior Corey Cooper getting the nod. Cooper, a Maywood, Ill., product recorded 17 total tackles last season, but will likely see his production levels come up during 2013 as he is expected to start for NU.
The Blackshirts being handed out was not only noteworthy news to come out of practice today. Running back coach Ron Brown also announced today that true freshman running back Adam Taylor of Katy, Texas is expected to redshirt during the 2013 football season. The decision to redshirt Taylor allows him to get more acclimated to the challenges Division I football presents.

Nebraska will continue preparations Thursday as the team moves closer to its season opener. NU will face Wyoming on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.
