Danks, White Sox Scratch Out 2-0 Win over Royals

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — John Danks shut down Kansas City’s scuffling offense for eight innings, and the Chicago White Sox did just enough damage against Ervin Santana to squeak out a 2-0 victory over the Royals on Tuesday night.

Danks (3-10) ended an eight-start winless streak by scattering seven hits and a walk. That the veteran left-hander’s finest start of the season came against the Royals wasn’t much of a surprise: Danks improved to 5-0 against them in 13 career starts.

Addison Reed worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 32nd save. It wrapped up the first shutout win for the last-place White Sox since a 3-0 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on May 17.

Gordon Beckham homered off Santana (8-7) in the first inning for the only earned run.

Tulowitzki, Rosario Lead Rockies Past Phillies 5-3

colorado-rockiesPHILADELPHIA (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki and Wilin Rosario homered to lead the Colorado Rockies past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 on Tuesday night.

Jorge De La Rosa (13-6) pitched into the seventh to win his third straight start. Dexter Fowler also drove in a run to help the Rockies jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado made a fantastic backhanded stop and in-the-air throw to first in the seventh inning to rob Jimmy Rollins of a run-scoring hit.

Rafael Betancourt tossed a scoreless ninth for his 16th save.

Tyler Cloyd (2-3) allowed five runs in six innings in his first major league start since June 12.

Green and Cooper Impressing Pelini at Safety

UNLLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team was back on the practice fields Tuesday evening, as the Huskers continue into the third week of the 2013 fall camp. The Huskers went through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media after practice, noting that the team is making some good progress as they start their preparations for the 2013 opening game versus Wyoming on Aug. 31.

“We are making some good progress, we are getting a lot of things accomplished out there,” Pelini said, “I am seeing a lot of areas where we need to get better, but the energy has been good and the temp has been good. I see us improving as a football team right now.”

A player that has had to deal with changing positions is senior Andrew Green. Green, who previously played corner for the past three seasons for NU changed to safety going into this season. Pelini believes that the switch is starting to work out great, as Green is starting to show some of his cover skills at safety.

“He has come along well, we gave him a ton of reps out there today and he is getting better.” Pelini said, “I think he is comfortable and he has picked it up well. He has shown really good range back there and cover skills from his corner days, he’s getting better.”

With his added depth in the secondary, not only do the Huskers boast a solid cornerback trio with junior Josh Mitchell and seniors Stanley Jean Baptiste and Ciante Evans, the Blackshirt secondary has a proven senior leader in Green to play safety.

A player that much like Green changed positions from safety to cornerback and now back to safety is junior Corey Cooper.  Cooper, who recorded 17 tackles last season with 1.5 tackles for loss has been impressing Pelini and the rest of the coaching staff during fall camp with his play at safety.

“His experience with playing up (cornerback) has helped him going back. Just getting game experience—getting confidence and having success.” Pelini said, “He understands how things work up front, so I think it made him a better safety having been up.”

Much has been said about the Nebraska football team announcing there will be four season long captains, with Taylor Martinez, Quincy Enunwa, Spencer Long and Ciante Evans being the captains chosen. Pelini so far has really liked how the captains have stood up to their leadership rolls, while also mentioning the four captains are not the only ones stepping up in the leadership department.

“I think we are getting really good leadership, not just the captains but some of the older guys as well.” Pelini said, “This team has some intangibles—leadership that I really like. It is a true theme, I like the way they have come together and hopefully that will continue.”

A player that has been making some noise on the offensive line has been senior Aurora native Andrew Rodriguez. Rodriguez, who has started eight games in his Husker career has shown some really good things at camp so far according to Pelini.

“He has played well, this has been his best camp and he is probably playing the best football he has ever played while he has been here.” Pelini said.

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Wednesday as they continue their third week of fall camp practices. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.

Broncos Miller Suspended

Von-Miller-Denver-Broncos-FENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos linebacker Von Miller will serve a six-game suspension under the NFL’s substance-abuse policy, a violation the linebacker said did not result from a positive test.

The league wanted a longer penalty for the third-year linebacker, but the sides agreed to less than half the season, a person familiar with the negotiations between the linebacker and the NFL told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because details about the negotiations were not public.

The NFL says Miller’s suspension will begin Aug. 31, and that he can return to the team Oct. 14.

Miller released a statement saying “although my suspension doesn’t result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules.”

Royals’ Maxwell Returns to Team, Smith Sent Down

Justin-Maxwell-Royals-KansaKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals outfielder Justin Maxwell returned from the bereavement list and was in the starting lineup playing right field for Tuesday night’s series opener against the White Sox.

The Royals cleared roster space for him by sending reliever Will Smith to Triple-A Omaha.

Maxwell was acquired from the Astros at the July 31 trade deadline, and was hitting .406 with three homers and seven RBIs since arriving in Kansas City. He left the team after the opener of a doubleheader last Friday in Detroit because of the death of his grandmother.

In other news, third baseman Mike Moustakas continues to deal with a strained left calf. Manager Ned Yost said he’ll likely play Wednesday when the Royals face a right-handed starter.

Seattle Sends Moffitt to Denver for Siliga

John-Moffit-Broncos-DenverRENTON, Wash. (AP) — Offensive lineman John Moffitt has been traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos after his original trade to Cleveland was voided by the Browns.

The Broncos announced the trade on Tuesday afternoon. Seattle will receive defensive tackle Sealver Siliga in exchange for Moffitt.

Seattle had originally traded Moffitt to the Browns on Monday, pending a physical, in exchange for Brian Sanford. But the trade was voided by the Browns. The Seahawks turned and sent Moffitt to the Broncos. Moffitt had lost out to J.R. Sweezy for the starting right guard spot with the Seahawks.

Siliga played in just one game during the 2012 season for the Broncos and recorded one tackle. The Seahawks have been seeking additional depth at defensive tackle.

Broncos Sign Veteran Lenon to Shore up LB Spot

Paris-Lenon-Broncos-DenverENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — While the Denver Broncos are waiting for a resolution on the Von Miller case, they made a move to shore up their linebacker corps in case Miller is suspended.

On Tuesday, the Broncos signed 12-year veteran Paris Lenon, who played his last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.

After practice, Miller spoke with reporters and said he’s aware of reports that say he could be banned for up to six games, “but I haven’t heard anything That’s the crazy thing about it.”

Miller has been practicing with the first team, though a window into the Broncos thinking came last Thursday, when he missed practice while he met with lawyers. Nate Irving, normally a middle linebacker, played on the strong side, and Shaun Phillips filled in at Miller’s spot.

Broncos Player May be Witness in Murder Case

Von-Miller-Denver-Broncos-FDENVER (AP) — Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller could be called as a witness in the death penalty murder case against a man accused of stabbing five people to death in a Denver bar in October.

Miller is among more than 100 potential witnesses in the case. He is listed as a possible acquaintance of suspect Dexter Lewis, but there is no indication Miller had ever met or knew anyone in the case.

According to the Denver Post (http://tinyurl.com/ms28m6g ), Miller could be called to testify in the sentencing phase of the trial if Lewis is found guilty.

Lewis faces 16 counts in the attack at Fero’s Bar and Grill. The charges include multiple counts of first-degree murder, felony murder, robbery and arson.

Nuggets Guard Lawson Free on Bond After Arrest

Ty-Lawson-Nuggets-DenverDENVER (AP) — Court records show Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson has been arrested on suspicion of charges including harassment.

KUSA-TV in Denver reports that according to Arapahoe County sheriff’s officials, Lawson and his girlfriend each face charges after a fight Saturday night.

The Denver Post reports Lawson was arraigned Monday. He is free on bond.

Details of the arrest weren’t immediately available Monday night.

Nuggets general manager Tim Connelly said in a written statement that the team was “fully aware” of the incident but that, per team policy and out of respect for the legal process, the team would have no further comment.

Lawson signed a four-year contract extension with the team last October. He averaged 16.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.47 steals in 73 games last season.
