Report: Miller Facing at Least 6-Game Suspension

Von-Miller-Denver-Broncos-FENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Von Miller is practicing with the Denver Broncos as a new report suggests the All-Pro linebacker could be facing an even longer suspension than originally thought.

ESPN, citing people it didn’t identify, reported that Miller might have to sit out at least six games for violating the league’s drug-abuse policy. In that case, Miller’s earliest possible game would be Oct. 20 at Indianapolis.

Previously, it was believed Miller was facing a possible monthlong suspension to start the 2013 season.

Miller had repeatedly expressed confidence he was going to successfully win an appeal of that penalty, insisting he had “done nothing wrong.”

Mayberry, Ruiz Lead Phillies Past Rockies 5-4

colorado-rockiesPHILADELPHIA (AP) — John Mayberry Jr. and Carlos Ruiz each homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the Colorado Rockies 5-4 Monday night.

Ethan Martin (2-2) tossed two-hit ball and struck out six over 6 1-3 innings for the win.

Mayberry hit a three-run shot in the fourth to help lead the Phillies to their second straight win under interim manager Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg took over Friday when Charlie Manuel, the winningest manager in club history, was fired.

Jonathan Papelbon tossed a scoreless ninth for his first 21st save, and first since July 11.

Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo shot for the Rockies. Jeff Manship (0-3) allowed five runs in five innings.

NCAA Reverses Course on Marine Playing at MTSU

marine-corpsMURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The NCAA has ruled that a Middle Tennessee football player who spent five years in the Marines will be allowed to compete this fall and that he will have four years of eligibility remaining.

It’s a reversal from the NCAA’s earlier decision to rule Steven Rhodes was ineligible because he played in a recreational league during his military service. School officials had said earlier Monday that they were working with NCAA officials to come up with a solution.

Late Monday afternoon, the NCAA issued a news release saying they wanted to thank Roberts for his service, wished him well and that member schools would continue to re-examine the competition rules.

Middle Tennessee President Sidney McPhee says it “exciting news” and thanked the NCAA for the review.

Court Allows Scholarship Case vs. NCAA to Proceed

NCAA-Logo-College-SportsINDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA has lost another round in court, this time over scholarships.

A judge in the Southern District of Indiana rejected a motion from the NCAA to dismiss a case brought by former college football player John Rock.

Rock contends that after playing three seasons at Gardner-Webb in North Carolina, a new coaching staff refused to renew his scholarship. Rock says that forced him to pay thousands of dollars out of pocket to earn his degree.

Rock says the one-year scholarship used by schools at the time and NCAA-mandated scholarship limits limited his choices. The NCAA now allows schools to offer multiyear scholarships.

Dawson County Raceway August 18

Dawson-County-Raceway-ResulCelebrating the 100th anniversary of racing in Lexington, Nebraska; the racers did not disappoint in finishing the season in fine fashion, bringing the large crowd in attendance to their feet on championship night at Dawson County Raceway on Sunday evening.
Driving their way into the IMCA Victory Lane was Colton Osborn, Chad Dolan, Jeff Whiting, Tiffany Bittner and David Dembowski.
Working the cushion early and stepping his way down the track to the bottom of the corners in the late circuits was the winning formula for IMCA Modified rookie Colton Osborn of Cozad, Nebraska to pick-up the Feature victory. Osborn led the first twelve laps by riding around the top groove on the cushion before being edged at the line after a caution flag flew where Jeremy Herbst of North Platte, Nebraska rocketed around the bottom of the track. Osborn regained the lead on lap 15 and never looked back as he circled the oval in the low groove to notch the win. Herbst held onto the runner-up position after driving to the front from the sixth row at the drop of the green flag. Styling the Captain America colors was Jay Steffens of North Platte, and he did the cartoon hero proud with a podium finish in third place. Steffens began his journey to the podium in the third row of the starting grid.
Starting on the pole was all that Chad Dolan of Gibbon, Nebraska needed in using the clean air to cruise to his 19th IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature victory of the season. Dolan led all 15 laps and was clutch on the restarts to hold off all challenges. Starting in the front row right next to Dolan was the runner-up Denny Egge of Kearney, Nebraska. Rounding out the top three finishers in the highly contested Northern Sport Modified feature was Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska as he started in the second row.
Leading the lap that mattered the most, Jeff Whiting of Gothenburg led by less than the length of a fender on the white flag lap, which turned into the way that the IMCA Stock Cars would finish, as a result of a big-time accident in corners one and two. Whiting hugged the inside berm for much of the contest to drive to the front from the fourth row to claim the victory that has eluded him at Dawson County Raceway. Leading the way from the onset, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood secured the season points title with his runner-up finish. Finishing his 2013 campaign at Lexington in fine fashion was Jared Brooks of Indianola with a third place finish from his seventh row starting spot.
Igniting the crowd to a full-on roar was Tiffany Bittner making the pass for the win in the IMCA Hobby Stock Feature to give the Norfolk driver a back-to-back feature winner at Dawson County Raceway. Bittner drove to second place in the early laps of the feature, following Neligh veteran driver Jason Wilkinson for the first 12 circuits, but it was on the final laps that Bittner made her move in a big way to power into the lead and record the victory. Wilkinson stayed up on the wheel and recorded the runner-up accolades. Testing the waters on the inside berm and then returning to the cushion, Dillon Thompson of Campbell rounded out the podium finishers with a third place finish.
Grabbing the lead early and never looking back, David Dembowski of Grand Island cruised to the IMCA Sport Compact Feature victory by leading from start to finish. Jacob Olmstead of Overton tried to reel in Dembowski for the whole feature and his effort to stay with the leader resulted in a second place finish. Returning to the podium at Dawson County Raceway with a successful night was Dalton Smith of Gibbon in third place overall.

BIG TEN Conference Partners with USA Football to Advance Youth Player Safety

Big-Ten-LogoNearly 2,800 youth and high school football programs across the United States representing 600,000 players and 90,000 coaches have committed to the health and safety of their players by adopting Heads Up Football, a new program dedicated to making the game better and safer. Heads Up Football provides coaching education and teaching resources that benefit players, parents and coaches while teaching tackling techniques that take the head out of the game.

Indianapolis-based USA Football is the sport’s national governing body, leading the sport’s development for youth, high school and other amateur athletes.

The Big Ten and USA Football will produce public service announcements featuring each of the conference’s head football coaches to voice the importance of Heads Up Football participation. Video messages will appear throughout the 2013 football on BTN, stadium video boards, conference and member institutions’ athletic web sites and usafootball.com.

USA Football’s five primary elements of Heads Up Football:

Heads Up TacklingSM
  • ·      USA Football’s Heads Up Tackling technique, endorsed by medical and football experts, teaches players to keep their heads up and out of the line of contact.
Coaching certification
  • ·      All coaches complete USA Football’s Level 1 Coaching Certification course (youth football) or USA Football’s varsity-level coach training course (high school football).
Concussion recognition and response
  • ·      Coaches learn and are assessed on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concussion recognition and response protocols.
  • ·      Coaches, parents and players are taught concussion-related protocols at the start of the season and have them reinforced throughout the year.
Player Safety Coach
  • ·      Appointed by each participating Heads Up Football high school or youth program. This individual is trained by USA Football to implement Heads Up Football’s player safety protocols, including coaching certification, and conducts safety clinics for fellow coaches, parents and players.
Equipment fitting
  • ·      Coaches, parents and players are taught proper helmet and shoulder pad fitting.

The Big Ten is recognized as a leader in college student-athlete safety as well as concussion research. The conference recently hosted the Big Ten-Ivy League Head Injury Summit on July 18-19 to engage in collaborative discussions and to refine the strategic priorities of the conferences’ unprecedented research initiative that was announced in June 2012.

“We are pleased to support USA Football and its Heads Up Football program,” Big Ten Commissioner JIM DELANY said. “It is extremely important to promote the proper instruction of tackling at all levels to ensure the well-being of young athletes as well as our student-athletes – nothing is more important than their health. Heads Up Football reflects the innovation that is woven into football’s heritage by changing for the better how our game is played and taught.”

“The health and safety of every young football player is our No. 1 priority and the Big Ten Conference shares in that commitment by supporting our Heads Up Football program,” USA Football executive Director SCOTT HALLENBECK said. “Commissioner Delany and each of the Big Ten’s universities partner with us to further advance a better and safer game for young athletes who enjoy the fun, fitness and other rewards gained by playing this exceptional team sport. We value the Big Ten’s trust and continued leadership for the betterment of our children.”

“Football is rooted in proper fundamentals and techniques – this has been the case since its earliest days,” Northwestern head coach PAT FITZGERALD said. Fitzgerald also is a member of USA Football’s Tackle Advisory Committee. “The techniques that USA Football teaches not only make our kids better players, but safer players as well.

“I know that I speak for every coach in our conference when I say that we are proud to support USA Football and our new partnership. Heads Up Football is a vital innovation for our athletes, particularly our children who enjoy and gain from the sport at the youth level.”

Wolfe Says He’ll be Back on the Field Soon, Latest Updates on Champ Bailey and Wes Welker’s Injuries

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Derek Wolfe says he’ll be back on the football field soon. The Denver Broncos hope fellow starters Champ Bailey, Wes Welker, Louis Vasquez and Stewart Bradley will be there with him.

All of them were hurt in Denver’s 40-10 preseason loss at Seattle on Saturday night.

Wolfe accompanied his teammates on their flight home after being whisked from the field in an ambulance after a scary scene in which he lay prone on the field for a few minutes following a hit to his head and neck.

Medical staff strapped him to a backboard and sent him to a hospital for evaluation of a possible cervical spine injury. X-rays, CT scans and MRIs were all negative, however.

“Thanks for the prayers everyone, ill be okay and will be back on the field soon …” Wolfe tweeted Sunday, an off day for the players.

The Broncos are counting on the second-year pro who had six sacks from the tackle position as a rookie last year to help fill the void if All-Pro linebacker Von Miller loses his appeal this week and has to sit out all of September for violating the league’s drug-abuse policy.

Wolfe was hurt on Seattle’s first offensive drive when he was blocked on a running play during which the Seahawks’ Robert Turbin gained 8 yards. Wolfe was initially cut on the play by Seattle’s Luke Wilson. As Wolfe was getting back up, fullback Michael Robinson collided with Wolfe and appeared to compress his head and neck.

Wolfe remained on the ground and appeared to be moving his legs initially, but medical personnel strapped him to a backboard and took him away in an ambulance.

Bailey, who’s entering his 15th NFL season, sprained his left foot. Welker, who caught an 11-yard TD pass from Peyton Manning, has a mild right ankle sprain. Vasquez hurt his left knee and Bradley injured his left wrist. The Broncos provided no estimates on much time those four players might have to miss.

Manning’s blindside protector, Ryan Clady, is expected to return to the lineup this week and play Saturday night against St. Louis at Sports Authority Field after missing most of training camp while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. Other key players who have been out include running back Knowshon Moreno (knee) and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (ankle).

“We have to get a few guys that have been injured back on the field,” Manning said. “I know I’ve talked before about forming your identity and forming the chemistry of this team. We haven’t had all of our players at full speed. So hopefully that can start a little bit more this week.”

Notes: As for his arrest last week on a warrant for failing to appear in court for a traffic stop, Miller said after the game, “It was something that I should have taken care of a long, long time ago. I take full responsibility for it. … I shouldn’t have let it become a distraction like it was.”

Davis, Jones Power Orioles Past Rockies 7-2

colorado-rockiesBALTIMORE (AP) — Chris Davis went 4 for 5 with his major league-leading 45th home run, Adam Jones had two-run shot among his three hits and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Colorado Rockies 7-2 on Sunday.

Scott Feldman pitched into the seventh inning to earn his first win in nearly a month. Davis scored three times and got hits in his final four at-bats.

After the All-Star slugger’s two-out double off Jhoulys Chacin (11-7) in the third, Jones launched his 25th home run for a 3-0 lead.

With the Orioles ahead 3-2 in the seventh, Davis and Jones hit consecutive singles against reliever Josh Outman and later scored on Brian Roberts’ one-out single.

Davis smacked a two-run drive to right-center off Edgmer Escalona in the eighth.

Martinez Poised for Big Finish to Nebraska Career

Taylor-Martinez-Nebraska-Huskers-footballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — All Taylor Martinez wants in his last season at Nebraska is to have fun and win lots of games.

He already owns school records for career total offense and passing, and he needs fewer than 600 yards to overtake 2001 Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch as the top rushing quarterback.

About the only thing missing is a championship. He says he’s not worried about that. He plans to keep doing what he’s been doing with his breakaway speed and improved passing and see where it takes him and the No. 18 Cornhuskers.

The Huskers open Aug. 31 at home against Wyoming.
