Cabrera’s 40th HR Leads Scherzer, Tigers over KC

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera hit his 40th home run and had an RBI single to help Max Scherzer become baseball’s first 18-game winner this season as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 to win the five-game series.

The reigning Triple Crown winner became the third player since 1921 to have at least 40 homers and 120 RBIs while batting .350 or better through 116 games, joining Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx, according to STATS.

Scherzer (18-1) gave up two runs on five hits over eight innings. Scherzer and Roger Clemens are the pitchers since 1919 to have 18 wins in their first 19 decisions, STATS said. Clemens did it with the New York Yankees in 2001, when he finished 20-3.

Torre Says MLB Working on Winning Back Fans’ Trust

mlb bigSOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Major League Baseball vice president Joe Torre told The Associated Press on Sunday the sport is doing everything it can to win fans’ trust back when it comes to players using performance-enhancing drugs.

Torre believes MLB is making headway, but cautions it might be a “bumpy” process.

Torre says there wasn’t much else he could say regarding the 14 players recently suspended in the Biogenesis scandal. It’s a group that includes New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez, who is appealing his 211-game suspension.

The former Yankees manager also touched on the topic of baseball’s plan to introduce video replay next season. Torre said officials are still “fine-tuning” replays implementations, and they plan to have it completed by the winter meetings.

Seattle’s Big Plays Lead to 40-10 Rout of Denver

DenverBroncosSEATTLE (AP) — Jermaine Kearse caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson and returned a kickoff 107 yards for a score and the Seattle Seahawks used big plays to rout the Denver Broncos 40-10 in a preseason game Saturday night.

Brandon Browner added a 106-yard fumble return for a touchdown, one of three turnovers forced by the Seahawks in the first half. Browner earlier forced a fumble and O’Brien Schofield also had a forced fumble and recovery.

Peyton Manning played the first 1½ quarters and threw an 11-yard touchdown to Wes Welker, but his performance became secondary for the Broncos.

Starting defensive end Derek Wolfe was taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring his neck in the first quarter, but was moving all of his extremities. Denver later saw starting right guard Louis Vasquez leave with a left knee injury after already losing center Dan Koppen for the season with a torn ACL earlier in camp.

Cabrera HR Lifts Tigers to 6-5 Win over Royals

kc-royalsDETROIT (AP) — A hobbled Miguel Cabrera hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth inning, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 win over Kansas City on Saturday night, hours after Royals infielder Miguel Tejada was suspended for at least the rest of this season for testing positive for an amphetamine.

Cabrera has been slowed by a strained lower abdomen, injured hip and banged-up left leg, but he was healthy enough to take a victory lap.

Joaquin Benoit (3-0) gave up only one walk in the ninth for the win.

Prince Fielder hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the seventh inning and made a good defensive play for the third out of the ninth.

Aaron Crow (7-4) threw five pitches, and Cabrera hit his 3-1 offering for an opposite field homer, his 39th.

Orioles Use 7-Run 3rd to Beat Rockies 8-4

colorado-rockiesBALTIMORE (AP) — Brian Roberts and Manny Machado both hit two-run doubles during a seven-run third inning fueled by Colorado miscues, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Rockies 8-4 Saturday night to end a four-game losing streak.

Adam Jones had two hits in Baltimore’s highest-scoring inning of the season, which featured an error by shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Six of the seven runs were unearned.

Most of the damage came against Colorado rookie Chad Bettis (0-2), who allowed seven hits, four walks and eight runs in 2 2-3 innings.

Bud Norris (9-10) gave up four runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 innings to improve to 3-1 since coming to the Orioles in a trade with Houston on July 31.

Denver DE Wolfe Suffers Neck Injury

Derek-Wolfe-Denver-Broncos-SEATTLE (AP) — Denver defensive end Derek Wolfe has been placed on a backboard and taken away in an ambulance after sustaining a neck injury in the first quarter of a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Wolfe was hurt with 9 minutes left in the quarter and on Seattle’s first offensive drive Saturday night. He was hurt being blocked on a running play where Seattle’s Robert Turbin gained 8 yards. The Broncos said Wolfe was being evaluated for a cervical spine injury and had movement in all of his extremities.

Wolfe was initially cut on the play by Seattle’s Luke Willson. As Wolfe was getting back up, fullback Michael Robinson collided with Wolfe appearing to compress his head and neck. Wolfe remained on the ground and appeared to be moving his legs initially, but medical personnel strapped him to a backboard and took him away in an ambulance.

He was down for about 8 minutes before being taken away.

Neb DT Williams is Out for Season with Knee Injury

Kevin-Williams-Nebraska-Huskers FootballLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska defensive tackle Kevin Williams will miss the season because of a knee injury.

Coach Bo Pelini didn’t disclose the nature of the injury Saturday but said the sophomore from Holland, Ohio, would be ready to play in 2014. Williams missed the 2011 season because of a knee injury.

Williams played in five games last season and made four tackles. He was competing for a starting tackle job alongside Thad Randle for the 18th-ranked Cornhuskers.

Huskers Complete Second Week of Fall Camp

nebraska_helmetLincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team completed week two of its 2013 football fall camp Saturday afternoon, going through a two-hour practice in full pads inside the Hawks Center and outside at the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice facility.

Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini met with the media after practice, noting that the team has been through a long week of practice, but likes the team’s direction with two weeks to go before the season opener.

“We just finished up a long week—a good week, got a lot accomplished, still got a ways to go as a football team, but we got a lot accomplished this week.” Pelini said, “I’m liking the direction this football team is heading in right now, but we got a lot of work ahead of us. We are not game ready yet, but I am seeing a lot of progress in a lot of areas.”

A key position the Huskers need to find depth in during the 2013 season is tight end, with the losses of graduating seniors Ben Cotton and Kyler Reed. Senior Jake Long will be one of the guys in the mix this upcoming season, and according to Pelini, even though Long suffered a minor injury at the start of camp, the senior Elkhorn native will be ready for the start of the season.

“Jake Long is way ahead of schedule right now. He will be coming back any day right now.” Pelini said, “He will be ready for game week, and he will probably be ready sometime this week.”

According to Pelini, even though it is only two weeks into the 2013 football season, the offense is already a well-primed machine, with an experienced core group coming back.

“I think we are a deeper group right now which really excites me.” Pelini said, “We have more depth and some of our younger guys are really competing for some playing time. We have a lot of guys that can play, and can play well, and hopefully that will continue.”

On the defensive side, one newcomer who has stood out in the early portion of camp has been freshman linebacker Josh Banderas, and Coach Pelini talked about his development during fall camp.

“Josh Banderas has done well, he still has a long way to go, we are putting a lot on him and throwing a lot at him.” Pelini said, “The thing I am most excited about Josh is, we knew he could run, he is physical and is showing tremendous instincts for the position. But it hasn’t been too big for him, for somebody who plays Mike linebacker and has to make a lot of calls and do a lot of things that we put on him. He has handled it extremely well. He is going to be a tremendous football player.”

Pelini announced that sophomore defensive tackle Kevin Williams will miss the season due to a knee injury. Williams, a third-year sophomore, played in five games in 2012 after returning to the lineup following a knee injury, and had four tackles, including a tackle for loss, and a quarterback hurry.

“This is the second time he has had a knee injury. I just feel for the kid.” Pelini said, “He’ll come back, it was a pretty clean injury. We think he will be able to rehab, and he will be just fine going forward.”

Nebraska will be back on the practice field on Monday for the start of week three practices in fall camp. Check back at Huskers.com for all of your preseason football practice coverage including the latest news, photos and video features.

Rockies Closer Betancourt Activated from DL

Rafael-Betancourt-Rockies-CBALTIMORE (AP) — The Colorado Rockies have activated right-handed reliever Rafael Betancourt from the 15-day disabled list.

Betancourt was put on the DL on July 20 with appendicitis. The 38-year-old closer is 2-3 with a 3.16 ERA and has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities.

Before the Rockies faced the Orioles on Saturday, Colorado manager Walt Weiss said, “”Rafe is ready to go. We’re going to make sure he’s mentally ready to go and then throw him into the fire.”

Rex Brothers served as closer in Betancourt’s absence.

Colorado made room for Betancourt by optioning right-hander Manuel Corpas to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Corpas pitched in 19 games for Colorado this season after beginning the year with Colorado Springs. He was 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA.

Royals’ Tejada Suspended 105 Games for PED Use

Miguel-Tejada-Kansas-City-RKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Miguel Tejada has been suspended 105 games by Major League Baseball for violating its joint drug program, one of the longest suspensions ever handed down.

The 39-year-old Tejada had previously tested positive under the league’s amphetamine policy, so he was subject to a 25-game ban for a second test and an 80-game suspension for a third, both of which occurred while playing for the Kansas City Royals this season.

Tejada, who signed a one-year deal with the Royals last offseason, will begin serving the suspension while on the 60-day disabled list with a strained calf muscle. He would need to fulfill the remainder of the suspension next season before he’s eligible to play.

Tejada was hitting .288 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 53 games before getting hurt.
