Roll Tide! Alabama No. 1 in AP Preseason Poll

Alabama-Crimson-Tide-RankinNEW YORK (AP) — Alabama will begin this season the way it ended the last two — No. 1.

Nick Saban and the two-time defending national champion Crimson Tide are top-ranked in The Associated Press preseason college football poll as they try to become the first team to win three straight national titles.

Much like the BCS championship game against Notre Dame, the vote was an Alabama landslide. The Tide received 58 of 60 first-place votes from the media panel to easily outdistance No. 2 Ohio State and match Florida in 2009 for the highest percentage of first-place votes received in the 63-year history of the preseason rankings.

The Buckeyes received one first-place vote.

Oregon is No. 3, followed by Stanford and Georgia, which received the other first-place vote.

Royals Sweep Tigers in Day, Night Doubleheader

kc-royalsFriday’s major league schedule also included a doubleheader sweep by Kansas City in Detroit. Danny Duffy outpitched Justin Verlander by allowing just one hit in six shutout innings of Kansas City’s 2-1 triumph over the Tigers in the first game. Eric Hosmer homered to back Duffy, who had a no-hitter until Miguel Cabrera singled with two outs in the sixth.

James Shields limited the Tigers to three hits in seven innings of the Royals’ 3-0 shutout of the Tigers in the nightcap. Hosmer also went deep in the second game as the Royals pulled within 6 ½ games of the AL Central-leading Tigers.

Huskers Earn 2-1 Victory in Exhibition Opener

huskersoccerLincoln – The Nebraska soccer team used upperclassmen leadership to its advantage, as goals from Jordan Jackson and Mayme Conroy enabled the Huskers pick up a 2-1 exhibition victory over Colorado College Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Soccer Field.

Almost halfway through the first half, senior Jordan Jackson helped NU break the tie when she received a through ball pass from Mayme Conroy and knocked it in from eight yards out.

Senior goalkeeper Emma Stevens came up big play in the final minute of play in the first half when she made an impressive double-save to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard as the Huskers took a 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission.

NU recorded 12 shots in the first half compared to seven for Colorado College forcing Stevens into three save, while the Tigers’ Kate Scheele stopped six shots.

The Huskers capitalized on a scoring opportunity less than ten minutes into the second half, as last season’s leading scorer Mayme Conroy connected on a shot from the top of the box, fed to her by Caroline Gray for the assist and the 2-0 advantage.

The Tigers kept things interesting at the 64:29 mark when Rachel Herron settled a cross and then netted a goal to the far post to cut the Husker lead to 2-1.

NU displayed a strong back line in limiting Colorado College to just one shot on goal in the second half and four in the contest. The Huskers tallied double-digit shots in both halves en route to 23 total in the match, while allowing just 10 for the Tigers.

Head Coach John Walker’s team returns to action for the regular season opener against Southeast Missouri State on Friday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. before welcoming Cincinnati on Sunday, Aug. 25 for a noon start.

2 Neb-Omaha Players Dismissed After Fight Near Bar

UNOOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Two players have been dismissed from the Nebraska-Omaha hockey team after they were cited on suspicion of disorderly conduct for their role in a fight outside a downtown Omaha bar.

Athletic director Trev Alberts announced Friday that Matt White and Preston Hodge are no longer on the team. A third player, Alex Simonson, has been suspended.

Witnesses told police that the hockey players taunted a group of African-Americans with racial slurs about 2 a.m. on Aug. 3. A police report says Hodge reportedly pushed one man and struck his head on the ground when the man pushed him back. Hodge was treated at a hospital and released.

White was a co-captain last season and the team’s fourth-leading scorer. Simonson appeared in 18 games. Hodge was to be a freshman.

Ramon Santiago hit a pinch hit home run for the Tigers.

Duffy (1-0), making his second big-league start this season after being called up from Triple-A Omaha Friday morning, held Detroit hitless for 5 2-3 innings, while walking three and hitting a batter. Miguel Cabrera got the first hit, a one-hop liner to third baseman Emilio Bonifacio’s right. Bonifacio dove for it, but the ball went off his glove and bounced toward left-center.

Greg Holland pitched the ninth for his 33rd save.

Verlander (12-9) allowed two runs on seven hits in eight innings.

NFHS Concussion Course Hits One Million Users

ConcussionINDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 15, 2013) — One million concussion courses have now been taken by coaches and other individuals since the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed the online course in May 2010.

Earlier this week, the millionth “Concussion in Sports – What You Need to Know” course was taken through the NFHS Coach Education Program at www.nfhslearn.com. This free online course provides an overview of how a person can recognize signs and symptoms of a concussion and the appropriate action to take. The course includes each state’s return-to-play guidelines required for high schools.

“We place great emphasis on concussion recognition and treatment, and the extraordinary success of our online course has been gratifying,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “The course is 20 minutes long and it’s free. We commend everyone who has taken it.”

The NFHS and its Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) have worked with the CDC on recent updates to the concussion course. Recommendations have been added regarding the prevention of concussions, and the course test has been updated. The tests (pre-test and post-test) now include 11 questions and provide immediate feedback to the user, thereby creating a better learning experience.

Michael Koester, M.D., former chair of the NFHS SMAC and director of the Sports Concussion Program at the Slocum Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Eugene, Oregon, is the on-screen host of the concussion course. Individuals have access to the course’s printable resources, including a parent’s guide to concussion in sports, a coach’s guide, an athlete fact sheet and materials to implement a protocol for concussion treatment.

“In addition to coaches, we are pleased that many contest officials, administrators, parents and students are among the one million individuals who have taken the concussion course,” said Tim Flannery, NFHS director of coach education.

The NFHS has been a leader among national sports organizations in establishing guidelines to deal with concussions. In 2008, the SMAC advocated that a concussed athlete must be removed from play and not allowed to play on the same day. For the past four years, all NFHS rules publications have contained guidelines for the management of a student exhibiting signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion.

A total of 34 online courses are now offered through the NFHS Coach Education Program, including the two core courses – “Fundamentals of Coaching” and “First Aid, Health and Safety for Coaches.” The NFHS also offers 14 sport-specific courses and 18 elective courses, including 13 that are free.

All NFHS Coach Education Program courses are available at www.nfhslearn.com.

Landeskog was the second overall selection in the 2011 NHL draft and he won the 2011-12 Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie.

The left winger has collected 31 goals and 38 assists in 118 career games.

After last season, he helped Sweden capture the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm and Helsinki.
