US Out for More Gold at World Championships

USA-Track-and-Field-LogoMOSCOW (AP) — Already atop the medal standings after the opening weekend of the world championships, the United States will be looking to add to its haul Monday in the women’s 100 meters and a possible sweep of the men’s 110 hurdles.

Usain Bolt of Jamaica already won the premier event, the men’s 100, on Sunday, but defending champion Carmelita Jeter and top qualifier English Gardner women will be looking to get even on Monday in the U.S.-Jamaica sprint rivalry.

In the 110 hurdles, it looks like the United States could win all three medals with Olympic champion Aries Merritt, defending champion Jason Richardson and the season’s top performer, David Oliver, all in the final.

The other finals on Day 3 are the men’s pole vault and hammer throw, and the women’s shot put and 400.

Punching their ticket to the winners circle with IMCA victories was Andrew Dillenburg, Terry Dressel, Casey Werkmeister, Tyson Canas and Zach Olmstead.

Gaining experience behind the wheel of IMCA Modifieds, Andrew Dillenburg of North Platte, Nebraska snared the lead in the final corner to win the Feature event. Dressel held the lead during the second and third laps before settling into the runner-up position for much of the event. Coming from the back of the pack was Maywood, Nebraska’s Casey Werkmeister to win the IMCA Stock Car Feature on the final night of racing at North Platte. Werkmeister got the lead near the halfway point and never looked back. Casey’s brother Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood took home the runner-up honors on Saturday. Mr. Consistency, Bob Hoing of Overton, Nebraska took the point on the fourth lap and enjoyed his run with clean air as the leader for numerous laps in the middle of the feature. Hoing held on for a podium finish in third place overall.

Finishing his rookie season at Lincoln County Raceway in fine fashion, Tyson Canas of Cozad, Nebraska had a sweep in the Hobby Stock division. Canas won the heat race, cash dash and feature events. Brady Weinman of Arnold crossed the finish line in second place. Loomis, Nebraska veteran Chuck Ledbetter showcased his talents behind the wheel in driving his hotrod to third place accolades.

Overton’s Zach Olmstead was in the right place at the right time to drive past brother Jacob Olmstead for the lead on the final laps of the IMCA Sport Compact Feature to earn the victory. In their initial events behind the wheel of a racecar, Charlie Blowers and Justin Mousel; both of Arnold, Nebraska were second and third in the feature event.

Broncos, Colquitt Agree to 3-Year Extension

Britton-Colquitt-Denver-BroENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos and punter Britton Colquitt on Sunday agreed on a three-year contract extension through 2016.

Colquitt is the franchise leader in career gross (46.1 yards) and net (39.5) punting average. In 48 regular season games, he’s had 79 punts inside the 20 with just 18 touchbacks. In three playoff games, he has placed five of 16 punts inside the 20 with no touchbacks.

Dufner Beats Furyk at PGA for 1st Major Title

Jason-Dufner-Golf-PGAPITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Jason Dufner has won his first major title with a two-stroke victory over Jim Furyk at the PGA Championship.

Dufner bogeyed the final two holes Sunday for a 2-under 68 that was good enough to hold off the 2003 U.S. Open champion. The winning score was 10-under 270.

Henrik Stenson finished three shots back.

Dufner made up for the heartache of the 2011 PGA, when he went to the 15th tee with a four-stroke lead in Atlanta. He dunked that shot in the water, squandered the advantage and lost to Keegan Bradley in a playoff.

There was no such collapse on another warm, sunny day at Oak Hill.

From tee to green, Dufner was nearly perfect. If not for a bit of a shaky putter, the margin would’ve been even more.

Shields Gets Rare Home Win, Royals Beat Red Sox

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — James Shields earned his first home win in more than three months, Alex Gordon homered and the Kansas City Royals beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 on Sunday.

The Royals improved to 18-5 since the All-Star break, winning seven consecutive series.

Shields (7-8), who had not won at Kauffman Stadium since an April 30 victory over Tampa Bay, limited the Red Sox to three runs and seven hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Gordon hit a 2-2 pitch from John Lackey (7-10) out to right in the third for his third homer in five games.

Lackey, who is 0-4 in his past five starts, walked David Lough and Eric Hosmer to lead off the first. Gordon’s two-out single scored Lough to tie it at 1.

Royals Place Miguel Tejada on DL

Miguel-Tejada-Kansas-City-RKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed Miguel Tejada on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf.

The Royals also activated All-Star catcher Salvador Perez from the concussion list after he missed seven games. Perez was in the lineup Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, batting fifth.

The Royals recalled infielder Irving Falu, who hit .341 in 24 games last season, from Triple A-Omaha and optioned left-handed pitcher Donnie Joseph, who threw two scoreless innings Saturday, to their Pacific Coast League affiliate. The Royals designated for assignment catcher Brett Hayes and activated right-handed pitcher Wade Davis from the family emergency leave list.
