Guthrie Pitches Four-Hit Gem as Royals Pound Twins

kc-royalsKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jeremy Guthrie pitched a four-hitter and Eric Hosmer drove in a career-high five runs to help the Kansas City Royals rout the Minnesota Twins 13-0 on Monday night.

The Royals, who have won 12 of their past 13 games, scored a season-high 13 runs.

Guthrie (12-7) won his fourth straight start to log his 12th victory, which is a career high. It was his second career shutout and he lowered his earned run average to 3.94. The right-hander retired the final 13 batters, did not allow a Twins runner to reach third base and only two touched second base. He struck out seven and walked one.

Kevin Correia (7-8) was pulled after two innings and 16 batters faced, allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks. It got so bad that infielder Jamey Carroll pitched the eighth for the Twins, his first career big league outing on the mound. He retired the Royals in order.

Broncos Injury Notes

DenverBroncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos right tackle Orlando Franklin limped off the field early during Monday’s practice with an injured hip and did not return.

Coach John Fox did not specify which hip and said the severity of the injury wasn’t known.

Franklin went down on the first play of team drills. While trainers attended to him, the offense and defense changed directions so they could keep practicing while Franklin was down on the field.

Franklin’s injury was the latest on Denver’s offensive line. After the third-year veteran went out, guard Louis Vasquez moved into his spot and recently signed Ryan Lilja moved to right guard.

Manny Ramirez has been filling in at center while Chris Clark is playing left tackle in place of Ryan Clady, whose shoulder is still healing.

In another note for Broncos injuries, tight end Joel Dreessen has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and is expected to miss the remainder of training camp.

Minus Suspended Stars, Teams Keep up Playoff Push

mlb bigJose Iglesias and a band of Texas Rangers now have All-Star spikes to fill.

The playoff races took a twist Monday when Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta and Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz were suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball in the Biogenesis drug case. In all, 13 players were penalized.

The AL Central-leading Tigers acquired Iglesias from Boston in a three-team trade last week, preparing to play minus Peralta. The contending Rangers called up two Triple-A outfielders soon after Cruz was banned.

Peralta, hitting .305 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs, and Cruz, leading the Rangers with 27 homers and 76 RBIs, will be eligible for Game 1 of the playoffs if their teams make it.

Last year, All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera served a 50-game suspension that ended in October. San Francisco kept him off the roster on its way to winning the World Series.

Dawson County Raceway 8-4-13

Dawson-County-Raceway-ResulBringing the thunder and the lightning to outrun the storm at Dawson County Raceway were the visiting Nebraska Modified Lites and the IMCA superstars that compete on the 3/8 mile oval in Lexington, Nebraska on Sunday evening during the Jeremy Trompke Memorial Races.

The competitors were chomping at the steering wheel to earn a trip to the Trompke Memorial race winners circle. Earning the highly acclaimed hardware were Cale Osborn, Chad Dolan, Mike Nichols, Tiffany Bittner and David Dembowski. Brian Davidson won his second straight Nebraska Modified Lite Feature, sweeping the special scheduled events in North Platte and Lexington.

Leading from the start to the finish was Brian Davidson of Bennington, Kansas in taking home the top honors in the Nebraska Modified Lite feature. Davidson was masterful in working through traffic during the event, to hold off the charges of runner-up Brad Bayne of Greeley, Colorado. Bayne started in the third row of the feature grid and was able to work his way to the front and drove to the second place finish. Lincoln, Nebraska hotshoe Brandon Vantine of Crete, Nebraska powered his way to a podium finish, taking home show honors for his efforts behind the wheel of his hotrod.

Starting on the outside of the second row and finding the cushion early propelled Cale Osborn of Cozad, Nebraska to cruise to the Feature win in the IMCA Modified division. Osborn snared the lead on the fourth circuit and never looked back to claim the checkered flag. Using the low line around the Dawson County oval was prosperous for Brian Levander of Grand Island to race his way to the runner-up position. Wakeeney, Kansas lead foot Kyle Rohleder won the cash dash and then was able to build on the stellar performance with a third place showing in the Feature event.  Showing great perseverance and patience, Gibbon’s Chad Dolan led the laps the mattered the most as he took the point on the final two circuits to capture the Feature victory in the IMCA Northern Sport Modified division. Crossing the stripe in second place, Lexington’s Vince Leibert was a mainstay in competing for top honors as he led the first four laps and then took over the lead on lap 16 as a result of Dillon Schultz jumping the berm in corner three., Veteran wheelman Denny Egge of Kearney, Nebraska charged to within contention from his fifth row starting position in the waning laps and was rewarded with a third place finish.

In one of the most exciting divisions at Dawson County Raceway, Tiffany Bittner held off all challengers to notch the victory in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Norfolk, Nebraska driver Bittner stayed cool, calm and collective throughout the Feature despite the pressure from Jason Wilkinson of Neligh, Nebraska on rear bumper for much of the final event for the Hobby Stocks. Wilkinson tried everything and more to pass Bittner, but was forced to settle for runner-up accolades. Kyle Bond is a multi-time winner of the Trompke Memorial event and was able to register a third place finish for his efforts after winning one of the earlier heat races.

Getting off to a fast start and running off and hiding in the front of the field was David Dembowski of Grand Island in the IMCA Sport Compact division. Dembowski led from the drop of the green flag until reaching the checkered flag to earn the victory. David Earhart of Farnam was heavy on the loud pedal of his ‘small but mighty’ hotrod and his efforts would pay off dearly in earning runner-up accolades. Justin Schmidt piloted his Chevy Berretta to third place honors for the Grand Island native.

Broncos Looking for Starting Running Back

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — There’s the man who isn’t big enough, the former first-round draft pick who hasn’t lived up to his potential and the record-setting college back brought in to replace them both.

Then, there is this question: With Peyton Manning at quarterback, does it really matter who winds up as the featured runner for the Denver Broncos?

That’s the puzzle Ronnie Hillman, Knowshon Moreno and Montee Ball are sorting out during training camp.

When the first depth chart of training camp was released over the weekend, it was Hillman, who put on 20 pounds in the offseason, listed at No. 1. He was followed by Ball, the second-round draft pick out of Wisconsin, and Moreno, the 12th overall pick of the 2009 draft.

Iowa’s Wilson, Clark Leave Program

university-of-iowaIOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa wide receiver Cameron Wilson and lineman Drew Clark have left the program.

Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz announced Monday that Wilson, a redshirt freshman, notified him last month that he intends to transfer. Clark, a seldom-used senior from nearby Marion, Iowa, will forego his final season to focus on his schoolwork.

Iowa opened fall practice on Monday. The Hawkeyes will hold an open scrimmage on Aug. 17 and host Northern Illinois in their season opener on Aug. 31.

Chadron State is Picked to Finish 2nd in RMAC Poll

Chadron_collegeCHADRON, Neb. (AP) — Chadron State has been picked to finish second behind defending champion Colorado State-Pueblo in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason football coaches’ poll, and Eagles running back Glen Clinton has been named preseason offensive player of the year.

The Eagles return nine starters on offense and six on defense from the team that finished 9-3 overall and 8-1 in the RMAC last season.

Clinton rushed for 1,350 yards and seven touchdowns and caught 21 passes for 218 yards and a TD last season. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound senior from San Antonio went over 100 yards rushing six times and cracked the 200-yard mark twice.

Nebraska Horse Racing Future Still Uncertain

Horse-RacingCOLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) — Horse trainer and owner Sean Foley is worried about the drop in Nebraska racing dates.

The loss of the Lincoln races between racing dates in Grand Island and Columbus has forced Sean Foley, of Gretna, and other owners to take their horses to Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, and other out-of-state tracks.

In an interview with the Lincoln Journal Star (http://bit.ly/11To2ye ), Foley voiced his alarm: “If everybody is leaving, do you get them back?”

He’s concerned about whether a new Lincoln track will be built to replace the State Fair Park track. The fair track closed with the move of the Nebraska State Fair to Grand Island.

A simulcast building is scheduled to open Sept. 15 on the Lincoln track property.

Alex Rodriguez, Others Suspended by MLB for Drugs – Bud Selig Statement Included

mlb bigNEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez was suspended through 2014 and All-Stars Nelson Cruz, Jhonny Peralta and Everth Cabrera were banned 50 games apiece Monday when Major League Baseball disciplined 13 players in a drug case — the most sweeping punishment since the Black Sox scandal nearly a century ago.

Ryan Braun’s 65-game suspension last month and previous punishments bring to 18 the total number of players disciplined for their relationship to Biogenesis of America, a closed anti-aging clinic in Florida accused of distributing banned performing-enhancing drugs.

The harshest penalty was reserved for Rodriguez, a three-time Most Valuable Player and baseball’s highest-paid star. His suspension covers 211 games, starting Thursday, and he is expected to appeal.

The New York Yankees slugger admitted four years ago that he used performance-enhancing drugs while with Texas from 2001-03 but has repeatedly denied using them since.

The text of a statement by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on the league’s discipline of 13 players in a sweeping drug investigation:

___

Major League Baseball has worked diligently with the Players Association for more than a decade to make our Joint Drug Program the best in all of professional sports. I am proud of the comprehensive nature of our efforts – not only with regard to random testing, groundbreaking blood testing for human Growth Hormone and one of the most significant longitudinal profiling programs in the world, but also our investigative capabilities, which proved vital to the Biogenesis case. Upon learning that players were linked to the use of performance-enhancing drugs, we vigorously pursued evidence that linked those individuals to violations of our Program. We conducted a thorough, aggressive investigation guided by facts so that we could justly enforce our rules.

Despite the challenges this situation has created during a great season on the field, we pursued this matter because it was not only the right thing to do, but the only thing to do. For weeks, I have noted the many players throughout the game who have strongly voiced their support on this issue, and I thank them for it. I appreciate the unwavering support of our owners and club personnel, who share my ardent desire to address this situation appropriately. I am also grateful to the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society and our club physicians, who were instrumental in the banning of amphetamines and whose expertise remains invaluable to me. As an institution, we have made unprecedented strides together.

It is important to point out that 16,000 total urine and blood tests were conducted on players worldwide under MLB Drug Programs in 2012. With the important additions of the hGH testing and longitudinal profiling this season, we are more confident than ever in the effectiveness of the testing program. Those players who have violated the Program have created scrutiny for the vast majority of our players, who play the game the right way.

This case resoundingly illustrates that the strength of our Program is not limited only to testing. We continue to attack this issue on every front – from science and research, to education and awareness, to fact-finding and investigative skills. Major League Baseball is proud of the enormous progress we have made, and we look forward to working with the players to make the penalties for violations of the Drug Program even more stringent and a stronger deterrent.

As a social institution with enormous social responsibilities, Baseball must do everything it can to maintain integrity, fairness and a level playing field. We are committed to working together with players to reiterate that performance-enhancing drugs will not be tolerated in our game.
