Gonzalez Back for Rockies After Missing 3 Games

Carlos-Gonzalez-Rockies-CarATLANTA (AP) — All-Star left fielder Carlos Gonzalez was back in the lineup for the Colorado Rockies on Monday night after missing the last three games with a sprained right middle finger.

Gonzalez aggravated the finger last Thursday at Miami and left the game. He was originally injured July 7 while batting at Arizona.

Both times he hurt his finger while striking out.

The Rockies announced before Monday’s game against the Atlanta Braves that they have recalled infielder Charlie Culberson from Triple-A Colorado Springs and optioned infielder Jordan Pacheco.

Culberson hit .310 with 14 homers and 64 RBIs in 97 games at Colorado Springs.

Williams Leaves Practice with Left Knee Ailment

Sylvester-Williams-Denver-BENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Denver Broncos defensive tackle Sylvester Williams hobbled off the field and into the facility after hurting his left knee midway through practice on Monday.

Coach John Fox said after the training camp workout that Williams’ injury “doesn’t appear to be super serious.” The first-round pick was banged up while rushing the quarterback in a midmorning drill.

Defensive end Robert Ayers (hamstring) and tight end Jacob Tamme (quadriceps) also left practice early Monday.

On Sunday, Denver lost center Dan Koppen for the season after he tore his left ACL in 9-on-7 drills. The team signed center Steve Vallos to fill Koppen’s spot on the roster.

Body of Ex-MLB Pitcher Recovered from Arizona Lake

Frank-Castillo-Colorado-RocPHOENIX (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of former major league pitcher Frank Castillo after he apparently drowned at a lake northeast of Phoenix.

Maricopa County sheriff’s officials say divers pulled the 44-year-old’s body out of Bartlett Lake on Monday afternoon.

Family members and friends say Castillo wasn’t a good swimmer, but he jumped off a pontoon boat Sunday afternoon for a swim and didn’t resurface.

Divers searched for several hours before suspending the search until Monday.

Castillo had an 82-104 record in 13 major league seasons. He pitched for the Chicago Cubs, Colorado, Detroit, Toronto, Boston and Florida from 1991 to 2005 before retiring and lived in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale.

The Red Sox held a moment of silence for Castillo before Monday night’s game against Tampa Bay.

Lincoln County Raceway Fair Races

lincoln-county-raceway-resultsGetting the chance to showcase their skills on the Lincoln County Raceway oval in North Platte, Nebraska proved to be easier said than done as the pits were stacked with very talented drivers seeking to conquer the very tacky track on Wednesday evening.

Taking home the top honors and earning the trip to the winners circle during the featured event of the Lincoln County Fair were: Jay Steffens, Dillon Schultz, Casey Werkmeister and Tiffany Bittner.
Returning to familiar territory in his own backyard, Jay Steffens of North Platte drove his way to the front of the field on lap number four and never looked back in claiming the IMCA Modified Feature victory. Veteran hotshoe Ronnie Wallace of McCook, Nebraska had to work his way through the field from his fourth row starting position and was rewarded with a runner-up finish for his efforts. Maxwell, Nebraska’s very-own Charley Brown was heavy on the loud pedal and made himself be heard in earning the podium finish in third place overall. Jim Mlady of North Platte and Cale Osborn of Cozad finished fourth and fifth in the feature event.
Grabbing the lead in the final corner has become a habit for North Platte’s Dillon Schultz, as he slipped past Bryan Herrick of Curtis, Nebraska to take home the top accolades in the IMCA Northern Sport Modified Feature. Herrick didn’t go down without a fight, as he stayed in the gas and garnered runner-up honors. Herrick snared the lead early on and led until the final corner of the race. Early leader Terry Dressel of North Platte faltered while leading the way and recovered quite nicely with a third place finish. Staying near the front of the field and keeping away from trouble, Jeremy Halouska of North Platte took home fourth place honors, whereas Troy Douglas of North Platte earned the hard charger award for driving from his starting position in row nine to fifth place.

Greg Deters of Centralia, Kansas and Kyle Clough of Wallace, Nebraska rounded out the top five finishers with fourth and fifth place accolades, respectively.
Having better luck on her side this time, Tiffany Bittner of Norfolk, Nebraska was able to rocket to the front of the field on lap number five and cruise to the IMCA feature win in the Hobby Stock division. Bittner had mechanical problems while leading the way during the Buffalo Bill Wild West Challenge earlier this season. Benkelman bullet Austin Davis started in row three and was able to work through the traffic and earn second place honors. Brady Weinman of Arnold, Nebraska was riding the cushion with success to earn third place accolades. Loomis, Nebraska driver Chuck Ledbetter was the early leader before having to relinquish his lead as a result of a flat tire.

David Ortiz of the Red Sox Ejected After Smashing Phone (Video)

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was ejected from the game on Saturday in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Tim Timmons for arguing a called strike during an at-bat that ended in a strikeout.

Ortiz destroyed the covers of two dugout phones with his bat, then charged onto the field and had to be restrained by manager John Farrell and bench coach Torey Lovullo.

Cornhusker State Games Competition Notes from July 28

CSG-2013Lincoln—Paul Creger of Lincoln earned a Cornhusker State Games Triathlon silver medal despite a short delay during the running portion.  The 22 year-old made time to get down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend Emma Hinrichs, who was cheering him on near the finish line at Holmes Lake.  She said “yes”.

Wade Fornander, 37, of Lincoln was the triathlon overall male winner with a time of 1:03:40.  Lori Merritt, 37, of Grand Island was the fastest female, finishing in 1:11:24. The Triathlon was one of 10 sports taking place Sunday, the final day of competition in the Games.

Team Silage successfully defended its title in ultimate frisbee, edging out Fire at the Circus.  In contrast, Dino’s Storage, playing ultimate frisbee for the first time, lost all six of its games Saturday and Sunday at Fleming Fields, but still raved about the competition and camaraderie.

“Our boss, who is big on fitness and team-building, signed us up even though none of us had ever played.  We were playing Fire at the Circus and getting whooped when they stopped the game and spent about 15 minutes coaching us.  Nothing condescending; you could just tell they loved seeing new players in the sport,” said Dale Cymens, who played for Dino’s Storage.

Lincoln’s Dan Mulgrue, 54, was supplanted by Mark Kraus, 51, of Madrid, as the top overall foosball player.  Mulgrue did earn one gold medal though, teaming up with Justin West of Lincoln to win the Level 1 doubles division.

Team Steel Curtain from Omaha won the CSG Flag Football Tournament, edging team Motivated in a hotly contested final at Air Park fields.  Sport Director Wyatt Godfrey, like all of the sport directors, was grateful for the unseasonably cool weather.  The Sunday temperatures topped out at 80 degrees, 21 degrees below the final Sunday temperature of 2012.

Final participation numbers were still being tabulated as late entries trickled in, but Nebraska Sports Council Executive Director Dave Mlnarik said the early Sunday total of 12,186 was the highest since 2009.

“This was a great year in every way, thanks to our volunteers.  These people are so dedicated, and they understand the spirit of friendly competition and good sportsmanship, which makes the Cornhusker State Games unique and successful.  We have some serious mojo heading into planning for 2014 and the 2015 State Games of America,” Mlnarik said.

Tulowitzki, Rockies Rally in 8th to Beat Brewers

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki homered early, then doubled to start a two-run rally in the eighth inning that sent the Colorado Rockies over the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Sunday.

Michael Cuddyer, Dexter Fowler and Corey Dickerson also homered for the Rockies, who salvaged a split of their 10-game homestand.

Yuniesky Betancourt and Norichika Aoki homered and Carlos Gomez had two hits and scored twice for the Brewers.

Broncos Lose Center Dan Koppen to Knee Injury

DenverBroncosENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Broncos center Dan Koppen is out for the season after tearing his left ACL on Sunday in 9-on-7 drills, less than six weeks after rejoining Denver following J.D. Walton’s setback in his comeback from ankle surgery.

Koppen, an 11-year veteran who played his first nine seasons with the Patriots, was caught in a pile early in the workout and was carted off the field and taken for an MRI, which revealed the season-ending injury.

Manny Ramirez, who took most of the snaps at center during Denver’s offseason practices, stepped in for Koppen, whose teams have gone 108-28 in games he has started.

Koppen’s injury is the latest setback to Peyton Manning’s patched-up pocket of protection.

Left guard Zane Beadles was the only starting lineman to come out of last season unscathed.

Gomez Swipes 3 Bases as Brewers Beat Rockies 7-5

colorado-rockiesDENVER (AP) — Carlos Gomez had two hits and three of Milwaukee’s five stolen bases, Juan Francisco and Jonathan Lucroy homered and the Brewers held on to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on a rainy Saturday night.

Milwaukee’s Jean Segura had two hits and two RBIs before leaving with tightness in his right forearm.

Troy Tulowitzki homered among his three hits and Wilin Rosario also went deep for the Rockies.

The Brewers were three outs from winning when the rain picked up and caused a 1-hour, 45-minute delay in the middle of the ninth inning. Jim Henderson then got the last three outs for his 12th save.

It made a winner out of Tom Gorzelanny (2-4), allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Collin McHugh (0-2), vying to make a case to be the Rockies’ No. 5 starter, gave up six runs and nine hits in five innings.

Cornhusker State Games Competition Notes from July 27

CSG-2013Lincoln—The weather was cool and the fishing was hot Saturday in the Cornhusker State Games bass fishing tournament held at Lake Wanahoo near Wahoo.  Forty boats, each carrying a two-person team, took to the new venue eagerly.

“We got our eight, but I’m pretty sure many other teams did, too,” said Dave Thomsen of Lincoln, who teamed up with partner Rob Greer to win last year’s tournament at Branched Oak Lake.  The two raved about the new venue’s fish habitat.

“There is so much structure and variance in depth in this lake, and it’s big enough the boats weren’t bumping into each other.  Last year we only caught three fish and that won the tournament,” he said.  “This year it’ll come down to who has the biggest limit,” Thomsen added, referring to the four-fish per person limit on bass.

Thomsen and Greer took the bronze this year with a total of 18.25 lbs.  Mark Madison and Joyce Clark won the event with 20.29 lbs. and Gordon Hardle and Barry Schmoker got second with 19.5 lbs.  Twenty-four teams caught the eight-fish limit.

Rather than the traditional weigh-in, this year, the teams were required to photograph each fish on a measuring board and immediately release them back to the water.  Bass are not allowed to leave the lake at Wanahoo.  Officials then calculated each team’s total inches and converted inches to pounds using a standard formula.  The new technique for contest fishing is gaining popularity across the country as anglers strive to keep fish healthy.  Keeping fish in a “live” well in the boat, even for an hour, can stress the fish considerably.

Omaha was busy with more than 700 athletes participating in five events, including ice hockey, lacrosse, pickleball, taekwondo and the non-competitive WalkOmaha.  Sixteen sports took place in Lincoln and the surrounding area.

Pickleball drew a record 52 players, including retired rancher Brian Thompson, 59 of Omaha.  After moving to Omaha from Arthur, Thompson took up the sport three years ago upon an invitation from Pickleball Director Bill Holt.

“I was in a bible study group with Bill and he asked me to give (pickleball) a try.  I’ve always been into sports, so I said ‘why not?’  I was hooked from then on,” said Thompson.

Holt was already speculating about adding competition days and venues for the State Games of America in 2015.  He said the six courts at Meadow Lane Park were “maxed out” with this year’s numbers.  Singles events were held Friday evening and doubles took place Saturday.

Quarry Oaks Golf Course near South Bend hosted the Games’ inaugural two-person scramble, with Will Hagel and Brad Huyck of Omaha carding a 60 and earning the 2-person Scramble State Championship trophy to go with their CSG Gold Medals.  Assistant Pro Brian Steventon was happy with the turnout and even happier with the weather.

“You can almost hear the golf course saying, ahhhhhh,” said Steventon after the shotgun start.  “The hot days are really stressful on the grass … and the players, of course.  The golfers will have a fun day out there.”

Mountain bikers at Branched Oak Lake also reveled in the mild weather.  Janna Vavra, 33 of Lincoln was the top overall female, finishing in just over an hour and 26 minutes.  Brad Auen, 26 of Omaha, won the men’s expert class in 1:17.

Lacrosse director Art Newsome attributed record entry numbers to the overall growth of the sport in Nebraska.  Total numbers increased by 81 to a total of 153 players this year.  Lacrosse was held on two fields at Creighton Prep, including the field turf at Leahy Stadium.

“We have a strong youth program here in Omaha.  Lincoln’s had (lacrosse) for a while, and there are leagues in Fremont and Kearney so those teams will start coming as they get more organized,” said Newsome.

With late entries still trickling in, entry numbers grew to 12,123, an increase of more than 500 over 2012.  Sunday is the final day of the Games with competition in 10 sports, including archery, electronic darts, flag football, ice hockey, lacrosse, pocket billiards, triathlon, ultimate frisbee and volleyball.
