AP Source: Nuggets Agree to Deal with PG Robinson

Nate-Robinson-Denver-NuggetDENVER (AP) — A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that point guard Nate Robinson has agreed on a two-year deal with the Denver Nuggets.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because the deal hadn’t been officially announced. The deal was first reported by the Denver Post.

The 5-foot-9 Robinson averaged 13 points a contest for the Chicago Bulls last season. He stepped up his game in the postseason, scoring 34 points in a triple overtime win in Game 4 against Brooklyn and playing through the flu later in that series.

Robinson joins a crowded Denver backcourt that also includes Ty Lawson, Evan Fournier, Andre Miller, rookie Erick Green and newly acquired Randy Foye.

Gov. Dave Heineman will make an appearance at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission meeting Friday in Lincoln and draw the winning entry in the hunting lottery.

More than 2,000 people paid $25 to enter the lottery.

The tag is valid in 2013 and 2014 and has a bag limit of one elk of either sex, one deer of either sex, one antelope of either sex and two turkeys (only toms and bearded hens may be taken in the spring).

The winner will be allowed to hunt with any legal weapon in any open hunting unit during the general hunting season for each species.

Nebraska Officials to Ponder Mountain Lion Season Anew

Mountain-LionLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Game and Parks commissioners will again consider a staff recommendation to create a mountain lion hunting season.

The topic is on the commission’s agenda when it meets Friday in Lincoln. In May, the commissioners rejected creation of a mountain lion hunting season and directed wildlife staff to bring new recommendations to the July 26 meeting.

Officials say mountain lions all but vanished from Nebraska by 1890. The cats have been making a comeback in Nebraska’s northwest corner and have traveled as far east in the state as Omaha. The commission estimates the Pine Ridge area has a population of 22 animals.

The Legislature approved a bill last year allowing for a mountain lion hunting season at the discretion of Game and Parks officials.

Martinez, Abdullah on Walter Camp Award Watch List

Nebraska-Huskers-Football-ALincoln – Nebraska senior quarterback Taylor Martinez and junior I-back Ameer Abdullah have been named to the watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award on Friday.

Martinez and Abdullah are among six Big Ten players on the 50-player list for one of college football’s oldest awards, while Nebraska is one of 11 schools with multiple players on the watch list.

The 6-1, 210-pound Martinez has already shattered several Nebraska records in his first three seasons as Nebraska’s starting quarterback. Martinez has established NU records for career and season total offense, career passing yards and he ranks second among quarterbacks in career rushing yards. Martinez’s 39 career starts are the second-most of any returning player in the country, and his 2,858 career rushing yards are the most among active FBS players. Martinez was a first-team All-Big Ten pick by the Big Ten coaches in 2012.

Abdullah teamed with Martinez in 2012 to give Nebraska pair of 1,000-yard rushers. Abdullah rushed for 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore and helped Nebraska lead the Big Ten and rank eighth nationally in rushing offense. Abdullah also posted the sixth-best single-season all-purpose yardage total in NU history with 1,884 yards. Abdullah was a second-team All-Big Ten choice in 2012. Together, Martinez and Abdullah team up to give Nebraska a pair of 1,000-yard rushers for the first time in school history.

Semifinalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award will be announced in mid-November. The 2013 Walter Camp Player of the Year recipient, which is voted on by the 125 FBS head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced live on ESPN SportsCenter on Thursday, December 12.  The winner will then receive his trophy at the Foundation’s annual national awards banquet on January 11, 2014 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.

Avalanche, Duchene Agree to 5-Year Extension

Matt-Duchene-Colorado-AvalaDENVER (AP) — The Colorado Avalanche agreed to a five-year extension with forward Matt Duchene that will run through the 2018-19 season.

The 22-year-old Duchene is coming off a season in which he dished out a team-leading 26 assists and tied for the squad’s top spot in scoring with 43 points.

Avalanche executive vice president of hockey operations Joe Sakic said on Thursday that Duchene “represents the identity we want the Avalanche to be.”

The flashy forward was the No. 3 pick in the 2009 draft by the Avalanche, a team Duchene rooted for as a kid.

He has been among the club’s top-three scorers in three of his four seasons with Colorado.

Hornets Name to Return to Charlotte

Charlotte-Hornets-BasketbalLAS VEGAS (AP) — Charlotte is the home of the Hornets again — starting after the 2013-14 season.

The NBA unanimously approved Charlotte’s nickname change from Bobcats to Hornets at the league’s Board of Governors meeting. The original Hornets built a supportive fan base in Charlotte from the time they entered the league in 1988 until they moved to New Orleans in 2002.

But the new owners in New Orleans have changed the team’s name to the Pelicans. That opened the door for owner Michael Jordan to bring the Hornets name back to Charlotte.
