(AP) — An 8-year-old eastern Indiana boy has died after a baseball hit him in the head and neck.

The Marion County Coroner’s Office says Dylan Williams died of blunt force trauma Wednesday, one day after suffering the injury in Union City, about 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Coroner’s office manager Marchele Hall tells The Indianapolis Star an autopsy Thursday showed the injury occurred on the right side of the boy’s head and neck.

The boy was hit by a ball that had been thrown during practice Tuesday evening. He was taken to a hospital in Winchester, then transferred to an Indianapolis hospital.

Union City Fire Chief Gary Moore tells The (Muncie) Star Press that organizers of the baseball program were arranging help and counseling for other children who witnessed the accident.

Board of Regents Approve University of Nebraska-Lincoln Soccer and Tennis Complex

huskersoccerOn Thursday, July 18, 2013, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved the program statement and budget for Nebraska Athletics to build dedicated, on-campus soccer and tennis practice and competition facilities.

The $20.4 million Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex will be located on 28 acres owned by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  The 28 acres, the former site of the State Fair campground, is adjacent to the Nebraska Innovation Campus currently under development.  The site has been cleared of the old campground RV support infrastructure as part of the demolition of the old State Fair Park buildings and related structures.  The new facility will be built with private donations.

“This will benefit our student-athletes and will make good use of a piece of land that was otherwise not practical to be developed for Innovation Campus because of the flood plain,” UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman said. “It also provides a much better vista for those on Innovation Campus than the existing landscape, so it is a win for everyone.”

The new soccer facilities will include one outdoor, lighted, full-sized competition field with seating for approximately 2,500 spectators.  Facilities for tennis will include 12 lighted outdoor courts and six indoor courts with a combined total of 1,400 seats for spectators.  With minor renovations, the former campground shower house will be repurposed into mechanical space and equipment storage for the soccer field maintenance and ticket windows.  Approximately 600 to 800 surface parking spaces will be constructed on the site.

A 73,900-square foot support facility is also planned to serve all three programs and will include:

  • ·         Dressing rooms, showers, and team rooms for men’s and women’s tennis
  • ·         Office, meeting and dressing rooms for tennis coaches and staff
  • ·         Game-day only dressing room, meeting room and showers for women’s soccer
  • ·         Visiting team meeting rooms, dressing rooms, and showers
  • ·         Officials’ dressing rooms and showers
  • ·         Satellite sports medicine treatment area and exam room
  • ·         Spectator restrooms and concession stands

The Husker women’s soccer team will continue to use office and conference room facilities at the Hawks Championship Center, adjacent to Memorial Stadium.

“This soccer and tennis facility project will provide much-needed on-campus practice and competition facilities for our women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis programs,” Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst said.  “It will immediately improve the practice and game-day experience for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans.  Furthermore, the new facilities will assist each program in recruiting the nation’s best and brightest prospective student-athletes to the University of Nebraska.  We are very grateful to Chancellor Perlman, President James Milliken and the Board of Regents for their leadership and support of this wonderful project.”

Construction will begin in May 2014.  The soccer fields could be completed in time for competition in the fall of 2014. The remaining facilities will be ready for the outdoor tennis season in 2015.

The new soccer and tennis facilities will rank among the best in the Big Ten Conference.  Previously, Nebraska soccer practiced and competed on a soccer field located in the interior of Ed Weir Track and Field Stadium.  It was the smallest competition field in the Big Ten Conference at 71 by 115 yards and the only field in the Big Ten without lights.  Nebraska tennis currently competes indoors at the privately owned Nebraska Tennis Center and outdoors at the Varsity Courts on campus.  Both lack dedicated locker rooms. The consolidation of the facilities will vastly improve the use of student-athletes’ and coaches’ limited time and will enhance training, competition, recruiting and fan amenities.

“We are certainly grateful for the support of the indoor and outdoor tennis facilities,” Nebraska Head Women’s Tennis Coach Scott Jacobson said.  “Having a facility of this magnitude will enhance the opportunity to recruit top talent throughout the nation to this great institution.”

“It has been a 20-year dream to have our team play in a soccer specific stadium on our own campus,” Head Soccer Coach John Walker said.  “The return of ‘night games,’ a closer proximity of fans to the action and improved fan amenities will greatly enhance the game-day experience for both players and supporters.  Everyone in the soccer program is very thankful for the support and generosity of our Administration in making this project a reality.  It’s a monumental moment for the Nebraska Soccer program.”

Nebraska Head Men’s Tennis Coach Kerry McDermott concurred.  “This is a dream come true for us to be able to conduct practices and host matches indoors and outdoors on our campus in the near future. This will create a better learning environment and will allow for more one-on-one time with our student-athletes. This no doubt will be a huge benefit to Nebraska tennis in the future and we are grateful for this opportunity.”

Similar to other athletic facilities, the Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex will not generally be available for public use.

Huskers Add Games with Cincinnati, Alter Northern Illinois Series

husker footballNebraska has completed a contract for a future home-and-home football series with the University of Cincinnati, the schools announced on Thursday. Nebraska also announced that it has finalized its 2016 non-conference football schedule.

The series with Cincinnati will begin with the Bearcats visiting Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12, 2020. The Huskers will make a return trip to Cincinnati on Sept. 13, 2025. The contests in 2020 and 2025 are the first non-conference games on Nebraska’s schedule for those respective seasons.

Cincinnati is a member of the American Athletic Conference and has played in a bowl game in 11 of the past 13 seasons, including BCS appearances following the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

Nebraska and Cincinnati have met just once all-time on the football field, with the previous matchup coming more than a century ago. Nebraska defeated Cincinnati in Lincoln, 41-0, in the 1906 season.

The scheduling agreement with Cincinnati also includes a home-and-home series in men’s basketball. The Huskers will travel to Cincinnati in the 2013-14 campaign, with the Bearcats making a trip to Pinnacle Bank Arena during the 2014-15 season.

Nebraska also announced on Thursday that it has revised its contract for future games with Northern Illinois University. Nebraska and NIU had been scheduled for a three-game series, including two games in Lincoln and a neutral site contest at Soldier Field in Chicago. However, with the Big Ten Conference moving to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2016, Nebraska needed to alter its 2016 non-conference slate.

The 2016 contest between the two schools at Soldier Field has been canceled, completing Nebraska’s non-conference schedule for that season. In 2016, Nebraska will play Fresno State, Tennessee and Wyoming in Lincoln before beginning its nine-game Big Ten schedule.

Although Nebraska and Northern Illinois will not play in 2016, the schools did announce that they have added two additional games at Memorial Stadium. Northern Illinois will now travel to Lincoln four times between 2017 and 2023 as part of the revised contract between the schools. NIU was previously scheduled for trips to Lincoln in 2017 and 2019, and now will also take on the Huskers in 2021 and 2023.

The schools also announced that the first of those four games has been moved to Sept. 16, 2017. The game had previously been scheduled for Sept. 2, 2017. NIU will also play in Lincoln on Sept. 14, 2019, and the two newly scheduled games will take place on Sept. 4, 2021 and Sept. 16, 2023.

The 2021 and 2023 games are the second non-league games on NU’s schedule each of those two seasons. The Huskers’ 2021 non-conference schedule also includes a trip to Oklahoma, while the 2023 slate also includes a trip to Colorado.

Abdullah Named to Doak Walker List

Ameer-Abdullah-Nebraska-Huskers-FootballLincoln – I-back Ameer Abdullah was named a candidate for the 2013 Doak Walker Award on Thursday. The award is annually presented to the nation’s top running back and is named for Walker, a three-time All-American running back at SMU.

Abdullah is the Huskers’ top returning rusher, as he earned second-team All-Big Ten honors by the Big Ten coaches in 2012, despite splitting time with NFL draft pick Rex Burkhead.  Abdullah rushed for 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore, despite making only seven starts. He totaled six 100-yard games, including four straight in Big Ten action (Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State) and became the first I-back at Nebraska since 1994 to record 100-yard efforts in his first five career starts.

Overall, his 81.2 rushing yards per game ranked ninth in the Big Ten, while his 134.6 all-purpose yards per contest were good for fourth in the conference, as he played a major role in NU leading the Big Ten and ranking eighth nationally in rushing in 2012.  In addition to his rushing, Abdullah was one of the Big Ten’s top all-purpose threats, as he also caught 24 passes and served on Nebraska’s punt and kickoff return units.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists on November 14 and the finalists will be announced on Nov. 25. The recipient of the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2013.
